FROM our ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
W
elcome to the Grand Theatre. I’m so excited to have you join us for The Comedy of Errors, the Grand’s first Shakespearean production. The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s earliest works, some people even say his first. The plot is simple: Egeon, a merchant of Syracuse, is condemned to death in Ephesus for violating the ban against travel between the two rival cities. As he is led to his execution, he tells the Ephesian Duke, Solinus, that he has come to Syracuse in search of his wife and one of his twin sons, who were separated from him 25 years ago in a shipwreck. The other twin, who grew up with Egeon, is also traveling the world in search of the missing half of their family. (The twins, we learn, are identical, and each has an identical twin slave named Dromio.) The Duke is so moved by this story that he grants Egeon a day to raise the thousand-mark ransom that would be necessary to save his life. Comedy ensues as a case of mistaken identity erupts between both sets of twins and the residents of Ephesus. There was actually a motion picture made in 1988 that was based on The Comedy of Errors. Can you guess what it was? I hope you enjoy the show, and I encourage you to share your experience at the Grand with your friends and family. Please join us for our next show in March, A Streetcar Named Desire, part of the Grand’s American Classic Series. Speaking of upcoming shows, don’t forget to download the Grand App! It’s a great way to stay in touch with what’s going on at the Grand. You’ll also be able to get special behind the scenes content from our shows, as well as special offers and discounts! Download the Grand App on Google Play, or the App Store tonight! Just search for “Grand Theatre”. Thank you and enjoy the show!

A WORD from the STAGE DIRECTOR
I
n the autumn of 2015, when I was in Salt Lake directing Animal Farm at the University of Utah, I got a chance to see a Backstage Production here at the Grand. The theater is so large and beautiful, yet they found a way to make the production personal, and I began talking with Seth Miller about other scripts that would benefit from this format. With a background in directing Shakespeare, I chose this play because a Backstage show provides the interaction between cast and audience that lets this script thrive. After 18 months of discussions, I’m so grateful to bring you our Comedy of Errors. Jamie Rocha Allan Stage Director

We help pay for college. It’s that simple. At Salt Lake Community College, we believe higher education should be available to anyone who desires it. SLCC Promise helps eligible, full-time students pay for their education by covering the cost of tuition and fees when federal grants fall short. SLCC Promise is intended to remove economic barriers and to provide a pathway for SLCC students to complete their degrees. Visit slcc.edu/promise for more information.
