FROM THE CREATOR What is past is prologue—William Shakespeare Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Who cares, as long as we continue to have eggs and chickens, right? Following this analogy, what’s both relevant and important now, regardless of which came first, the story or the music, is that FATE? nourishes and uplifts your spirits. Music is an outburst of the soul—Frederick Delius We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy—Joseph Campbell During the early weeks and months of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the Spring of 2020, the world seemed to be an awfully dark and joyless place. What I missed most was getting together for weekly practices with the Original Blue Healers (OBH). We were half-way through recording our third “album” when Covid hit. Music, for me, has always been a shield against “the blues”—even, and ironically, playing the Blues! So, who are the Original Blue Healers, and what do they have to do with the inspiration behind the rock musical FATE? OBH is a venerable (a kindly euphemism for aged!) Salt Lake City rock ‘n roll band, performing locally and nationally (and if you count Canada, internationally) for more than 20 years, and mostly in support of charitable causes—especially cancer research and hospice care. What we found over the years, is that our performances brought joy to people, and not just because it created financial support for worthy causes. Simply put, our music made people happy. And what could bring more joy to more people than a story put to music: A MUSICAL! Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart—Pablo Casals The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes —Mark Twain And so, FATE? was conceived (along with many other mammals that Spring), with a gestation period exceeded only by elephants. With much and intense “laboring”, Dave Schmidt’s invaluable support and direction birthed a staged reading of FATE? at the Alliance Theater, thanks to Jay Perry. The enthusiasm generated by this first publically attended workshop led Seth Miller to green-light its future production at the Grand Theater, aided and abetted by Jamie Rocha Allan, Nicholas Dunn, Trevor Jex and Jessica Pace, with generous backing from Lee Hollaar and the Umbrella Theater Company, throughout the 18 month writing-editing-workshopping-rewriting cycle. Now, with my everlasting gratitude to these wonderful artists who have brought FATE? to maturity, and the many more who are now taking FATE? to the stage…in a word: ENJOY! Cause all of me loves all of you—John Legend Perry Gordon Fine Creator FATE?

FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR Alongside the show's creator Perry Fine, and co-author of the book, Nick Dunn, we have been working on this script for the last 18 months. It has been a real joy watching the script come to life in a summer workshop (many thanks to all involved), and now in rehearsals. In addition to Perry and Nick it was a pleasure getting to work in the room with musical director Trevor Jex and choreographer Jessica Pace. Our incredible cast and creatives have worked tirelessly to give this show its premier. A lot about the show has changed over the last 18 months, and continues to change in rehearsals. I’m grateful to all of the creatives, and especially the cast, who have worked hard to not only bring these characters to life, but also adding their inputs to help develop them. We hope you enjoy watching the show as much as we’ve enjoyed making it. There is no theatre without an audience. Jamie Rocha Allan Stage Director FATE?

PATRON INFORMATION AUDIO ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT is available for theatre patrons who are hearing impaired. The concession stand has Comtex wireless personal receivers, which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high-fidelity audio. Because this service is not charged, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned. BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN often make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. Therefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat. DISABLED PATRONS may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Each area can accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats. BOX OFFICE HOURS are from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the night of the performance, including Saturdays.
LATECOMERS will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons. LOST AND FOUND will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact the Box Office at 801.957.3322. All items, after a period of 24 hours, will be taken to Administrative Services in Room 1-060. They may be contacted at 801.957.2201. PHOTOGRAPHY, AUDIO, OR VIDEO RECORDING of any performance or the possession of any such device inside the theatre without written permission of management is prohibited. Offenders may be requested to leave and may be liable for damages and other lawful remedies. THEATRE PARKING is available at no charge in the parking areas on the East and North side of the building. Ticketing will occur when parked in the disabled parking areas without a valid pass. Please note that parking meters are still active during performances.
