FROM our ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

W

elcome to The Grand’s 2016-2017 season! I’m so thrilled to have you join us as we kick-off the season with Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical. We’ve had a few changes over the summer that we’re really excited about. First, I’m sure you’ve notice the new carpeting in the theatre, as well as the new architectural lighting that has been added. I think it really adds the finishing touches to our theatre and helps to highlight some of the beautiful plaster work. Second, in an effort to make your Grand experience more enjoyable, we’ve completely re-vamped our website, and added new tools to make The Grand App more interactive. Our new website is much easier to navigate, and is completely accessible from your mobile device; and with The Grand Theatre App, you’ll get special behind the scenes content from our shows, as well as special offers and discounts! Check out our new website at www.thegrandtheatrecompany.com and download The Grand App on Google play or the App Store. Just search for “Grand Theatre”. Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical comes to life at The Grand Theatre in this thrilling tale conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden & Frank Wildhorn. The epic struggle between good and evil reaches new heights combining the passion of the gripping novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and the thrilling score from multi-Grammy and Tony nominated Frank Wildhorn & double Oscar and Grammy-winning Leslie Bricusse. In an attempt to cure his ailing father’s mental illness by separating ‘good’ from ‘evil’ in the human personality, talented physician Dr. Jekyll inadvertently creates an alternate personality of Mr. Hyde, who wreaks murderous havoc on the city of London. As his fiancée Emma grows increasingly fearful for her betrothed, a prostitute, Lucy, finds herself dangerously involved with both the doctor and his alter ego. Struggling to control Hyde before he takes over for good, Jekyll must race to find a cure for the demon he has created. Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical has mesmerized audiences the world over. I hope you enjoy the show, and encourage you to share your experience at The Grand with your friends and family. Please join us for our next show in December, Amahl and the Night Visitors, a special limited engagement event brought to you in partnership with the University of Utah’s School of Music. Thank you and enjoy the show!

A WORD from the DIRECTOR

R

obert Louis Stevenson wrote Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1885 and it was published in January of 1886 as a “shilling shocker.” It was originally intended as an offering for Christmas the year before. (Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was another such offering.) It is one of the most famous horror stories of all time, along with Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and has been adapted into countless film and stage productions. It deals with the properties of good and evil and has entered the collective consciousness and psychological terminology for such. Everyone has heard the latest serial killer or homicidal maniac described as having a ‘Jekyll & Hyde personality’. People love to be frightened and enjoy such television stories as Criminal Minds, and late night offerings like the latest from HBO, The Tunnel. What makes a person psychopathic? What switch is flipped to make someone become a serial killer? I don’t think Stevenson cared about such things, and the Victorian audience for which it was written did not. They, like us, enjoyed being shocked, chilled, and have their blood pressure raised. Jekyll & Hyde is a fine ‘bogey tale’ conceived in that tradition. We present to you the Frank Wildhorn/Leslie Bricusse musical version, who added the characters of Emma, Jekyll’s long suffering fiancé, and Lucy, the whore with the heart of gold. We are now presented with the perfect love triangle, and we also see Hyde kill the people who stand in the way of Jekyll’s research, all of whom share at least one of the 7 deadly sins. (I leave it to the audience to guess which ones.) There is enough good and evil to go around with some wonderfully melodramatic music tossed in and more than one great ballad. It is the perfect October/Halloween “penny dreadful.” Anne Stewart Mark Director
