PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

T

hank you for joining us for Picnic, the latest installment in our American Classics Series. Keeping these classics alive on the stage for new generations is so important, and the College is very grateful for the Cultural Vision Fund in supporting our American Classic Series all these years. Previous installments of the series have included Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, Our Town, and last year’s The Skin of Our Teeth.

The Grand’s 25th Anniversary Season is full of award-winning shows. Young Frankenstein was nominated for both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award and also won an Outer Critics Circle award, and The Last Five Years won a Drama Desk Award and was named one of TIME magazine’s 10 best shows of 2001. Tonight’s show, Picnic, won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play in 1953. As the curtain closes for bows, you’ll understand why it won such accolades. In May, we hope you’ll join us as we close this exciting season with The Full Monty, winner of the Drama Desk and Theatre World awards. Salt Lake Community College and the Grand Theatre have experienced tremendous expansion during the past several years. Our stunning Center For Arts and Media brings together the latest technology and resources in digital arts education, combines the best teachers in the valley, and puts them all in one environment—sharing, creating, inspiring, and collaborating throughout 130,000 square feet. The stage has been set for student success here at SLCC. We truly are the community’s college and our many resources—like this wonderful theatre—are here for everyone to enjoy. Please encourage your neighbors and colleagues to join us as we present professional community theatre here at The Grand. We are so glad you are with us tonight. Please enjoy the show! Deneece G. A NOTE FROM THE GRAND’S DIRECTOR

T

hank you for joining us as we celebrate our 25th anniversary! We’re excited to bring you another award-winning show as we present the latest installment of the American Classics Series, Picnic. According to the New York Observer, “William Inge was one of the three most important playwrights in the American theater of the ’50s, along with Williams and Arthur Miller...Nobody wrote more profoundly about the frustrations and longings of small-town Midwesterners—and Picnic is generally considered Inge’s masterpiece...” As the play unfolds, you’ll quickly see why Picnic is one of America’s classic plays.

As we look towards the next 25 years, we’re excited to introduce several new programs to make your experience with us even better, like the new Grand Theatre app, offering exclusive behind the scenes looks at our shows, special offers and discounts, and the ability to pick up last-minute tickets on the go. Just search for “the Grand Theatre” on the App Store or on Google Play. We’re also thrilled to introduce our brand new ticketing software, making online purchases faster and easier! For the first time ever, you can now purchase season tickets and flex passes online. Season ticket holders can look forward to some new services as we roll out our new Season Subscriber Rewards Program. Some of the new services include reserved seating at our backstage shows and complimentary concession items at many of our productions. It’s just our way of saying thanks for being a Season Subscriber and supporting the Grand. For more information, or to join our Season Subscriber family, please see the Subscription Desk in the lobby. We hope you enjoy this production as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you! We’re proud of the professional quality theatre we bring the community at an affordable cost. We hope you’ll continue to help support our community by joining us in May for our season closer, The Full Monty! Thank you and enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I

n his epigraph to Picnic, William Inge quotes Shakespeare’s Sonnet 94, “The summer’s flower is to the summer sweet...” Picnic begins on the last wild day of summer – on the verge of the new school year and return to the status quo, and this sense of finite sweetness and bloom haunts the play. Inge’s Picnic is infused with an awakening vitality and secret urgency. “Look at that sunset!... That’s the most flaming sunset I ever did see… It’s like the daylight didn’t want to end, isn’t it?... Like the daytime was gonna put up a big scrap and maybe set the world on fire… to keep night-time from creepin’ on.” When the play opens, it’s early morning, Labor Day, the early 1950s in a small Kansas town. Everyone is preparing to celebrate the end of summer with a town picnic, and a young drifter arrives on a freight train, seeking work and a new beginning. May you feel the heat of the summer sun on your skin, catch the scent of late summer flowers on the breeze, and feel that sense of possibility like butterflies fluttering against your ribcage. We hope you enjoy our Picnic. Alexandra Harbold Director
