PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
T
hank you for joining us for The Last Five Years, the third production of our 25th Anniversary Season. After a smash run of Forever Plaid, we’re thrilled to return to the intimacy of Backstage at The Grand where you can get up close and personal with the performers. The Last Five Years is a Drama Desk winner, has been translated into a handful of languages, and was named one of TIME Magazine’s 10 Best Shows of 2001. A testament to the show’s longevity, The Last Five Years enjoyed an Off-Broadway revival at Second Stage in 2013. The next year, a film adaptation was released starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.
This year’s season at the Grand Theatre is full of excitement! Fall brought in toe-tapping fun with Forever Plaid and Young Frankenstein; January saw the return of our Backstage Concert Series showcasing the Baby Boomer Comedy Show and A Tribute to Etta James & Simone. January also brought back the world renowned Sundance Film Festival, making the Grand Theatre the largest festival venue in Salt Lake City. Join us next month for our American Classic Series Picnic, followed by our season closer, The Full Monty. Salt Lake Community College and the Grand Theatre have experienced tremendous expansion during the past several years. Our stunning Center For Arts and Media brings together the latest technology and resources in digital arts education, combines the best teachers in the valley, and puts them all in one environment - sharing, creating, inspiring, and collaborating throughout its 130,000 square feet. The stage has been set for student success here at SLCC. We truly are the community’s college and our many resources - like this wonderful theatre - are here for everyone to enjoy. Please encourage your neighbors and colleagues to join us as we present professional community theatre here at The Grand. We are so glad you are with us tonight. Please enjoy the show! Dr. Deneece G. A NOTE FROM THE GRAND’S DIRECTOR
T
hank you for joining us as we celebrate our 25th anniversary season. We’re excited to bring you another award-winning show as we present The Last Five Years Backstage at The Grand.
The Last Five Years is one of my favorite shows! The story is an emotional and powerful musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. Written by acclaimed writer and composer Jason Robert Brown, the show is based on his real life experiences. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy telling her story of their relationship from the end to the beginning, while Jamie tells his story from the beginning to the end. The two characters only appear on stage together once, as the two timelines cross in the middle of the show. I really hope you enjoy this show as much as I do! As we look towards the next 25 years, we’re excited to introduce several new programs to make your experience with us even better. The new Grand Theatre app, offering exclusive behind the scenes looks at our shows, special offers and discounts, and the ability to pick up last-minute tickets on the go. Just search for “The Grand Theatre” on the App Store or on Google Play. We’re also thrilled to introduce our brand new ticketing software, making online purchases faster and easier. For the first time ever, you can now purchase season tickets and flex passes online. Season ticket holders can also look forward to some new services as we roll out our new Season Subscriber Rewards Program. Some of the new services include reserved seating at our backstage shows and complimentary concession items at many of our productions. It’s just our way of saying thanks for being a Season Subscriber and supporting The Grand. For more information, or to join our Season Subscriber family, please visit or call the box office at (801) 957-3322, or go online at www.the-grand.org We hope you enjoy this production as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you! We’re proud of the professional quality theatre we bring the community at an affordable cost. We hope you’ll continue to help support our community by joining us in March for Picnic, this year’s American Classic. Thank you and enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
T
here are rarely new types of stories to be told, but always original and innovative ways to tell them. The details may be unique, but the themes stay the same. We become introduced to the portrayal of a new relationship, and instantly we know the possible outcomes. Boy meets girl and all the romance, turbulence, separation and reconciliation that goes with it are themes that grace countless tellings of our favorite tales. What makes that tired theme appeal to our sensibilities is the personal connections we form with the journey itself. It’s the ebb and flow as two people take us on a ride that we always hope will end in violins, rose petals and long held kisses. They’re everything we want, and rightfully so. But then, every once in a while, comes a love story that throws our view of the genre for an entirely different ride altogether Jason Robert Brown has beautifully crafted one of those stories. It could be told as any other tale of love could be. Instead, with an ingenious approach to the traditional ‘boy meets girl’ journey, he forces us to look at the idea through a new set of glasses. We watch the story of two lives intertwined together, but are also asked to consider them separately; not an easy feat. But in that attempt, we get the chance to see the concept of relationship in a new way. There are three sides to every relationship story: one side for each person involved, and (usually somewhere in between the two) the actual truth. Brown peels away that third layer of absolute truth, not in an attempt to ignore it, but to expose it. He graciously allows us to decide what the truth may be. We get to choose the difference between ‘he said’ and ‘she said’ and recognize that there is always more to the story - that there is always more to our stories and our relationships. No one is completely in the right, just as no one is always in the wrong. The truth lies somewhere in between. It’s been my privilege to work with two amazingly talented actors in this telling of Jason Robert Brown’s unique story. Each moment of this process has been a thrill, watching them breathe life into these wonderfully complex characters. I am equally thrilled to be a small part in sharing this experience with you. Because, when it really comes down to it, you are not just an audience. You are the third side of our story. David Hanson Director
