HAMILTON EDUCATION PROGRAM Inspiring Students to Create Art

Alex Callorina

by Josh Loftin

A

in San Francisco. He said the competition and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway musical inspired him to return to writing poetry.

rap monologue about the Bill of Rights did more than inspire high school senior Alex Callorina to learn about America’s Founding Fathers. It got him writing again.

“It got me to get my creative juices flowing again,” Callorina told the Deseret News. “For a while, I hadn’t been writing, and to see someone else be creative in that way, I wanted to be creative again.”

Callorina performed his rap at an October event announcing the Hamilton Education Program coming to Utah as part of Hamilton’s run at the Eccles Theater. In partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, EduHam (as it’s commonly called) provides high schools with curriculum designed to teach students to create art and performances based on the history of the Founding Era. Select students from participating schools have a chance to perform their works on the same stage where Hamilton is performed.

Utah joins other Hamilton stops, including New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, to provide an opportunity for more than 2,000 11th graders in Utah to see the show. Once schools have finished incorporating the curriculum into their classrooms, they qualify to come to a matinee on May 4 at the Eccles Theater. They will also see the finalists in the EduHam student performances, participate in a questionand-answer session with cast members from Hamilton, and attend a college fair.

Callorina, from Fairfield, Calif., originally wrote his piece for the EduHam competition 38

HAMILTON EDUCATION PROGRAM Although not affiliated directly with EduHam or the Hamilton production, the New Nation Project does give an additional 250 students a shot at winning tickets to a performance of Hamilton on April 19 or 21. Students from nearly every high school in the state wrote a letter to an elected official about an issue they were passionate about, and as long as they proposed a solution, they were entered into a random drawing. The primary goal of the competition was engaging students in the democratic process, so letters were not selected based on quality. Instead, two students from each legislative district, as well as council districts for Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County, were chosen in a blind draw to attend the performance with their elected official. Those officials were required to pay for their own tickets, but in many cases they also covered the cost of the student tickets – which actually allowed more students to attend.

Approximately 40 schools are participating statewide, including many from rural areas. The Gilder Lehrman Institute partnered with the producers of Hamilton and the Miranda family, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation, to create the Hamilton Education Program. During the October event in Salt Lake City, Luis Miranda, Lin-Manuel’s father, said he wanted to expose students from all walks of life to the wonders of musical theater and inspire them to pursue their own creative passions.

Another part of the New Nation Project is an interactive exhibition on the fourth floor of the Utah State Capitol, titled “Who Tells Your Story?” The exhibition showcases the many different ways people have chronicled their history in this region, starting with centuriesold rock art to present day methods such as documentary films and, yes, selfies. The exhibition points to a lot of less obvious methods, such as ceramics, hip-hop dance, story cloths, and even land surveys.

“The Hamilton Education Program is an opportunity to open the doors for theater for kids who otherwise may not have the opportunity to be entertained by live theater,” Luis said.

A third program in the New Nation Project will give public libraries books, music, and videos that all relate to the Founding Era. These materials can be displayed in the libraries and made available to patrons.

Unlike other markets, the Utah Legislature actually provided public funding in addition to the private funding raised for the Hamilton Education Program. That allowed Utah to create the complementary New Nation Project, which gives all Utahns a chance to embrace the Hamilton mania.

Combined, these programs will mean that Hamilton, the musical, will definitely leave a legacy in Utah. 40

Eva’s Bakery

Patio Season Downtown By Nick Como, Downtown Alliance

Main Street People Watching: Mollie & Ollie’s. Healthy and fast is what M&O’s is known for. Order salads, wraps and plates from the kiosk and your food will be up in mere minutes. Grab one of the tables on the sidewalk and take in the sights and sounds of Main Street. You can build your meal, or pick from several chef-designed meals; either way, you can’t go wrong. Baked Goods: Eva’s Bakery. Nearly adjacent to M&O’s this bakery offers similar patio seating, however, the food has significantly more butter in it! Croque Madame’s and flatbread pizzas are great for quick bites, plus a full menu is offered for something more hearty if you have the time to linger. Dinner and a Show: Caffe Molise. Get it while you can. SLC’s best patio (in my humble opinion) will be closing this summer as the restaurant will be moving to 400 S and West Temple. Chef Fred Moesinger assures us he will have a great patio at the new location, but don’t miss your last few chances to dine al fresco at the 100 S location before it is no longer there.

Current. Downtown’s best seafood + a covered patios = one magical meal. The interior of Current is a beautiful reclaimed historic building, and thanks to thoughtful architecture, blends perfectly with the modern patio. The ample shade is a welcome respite on sunny and warm evenings, as is the oversized seafood tower. Martine. Technically Martine does not have a patio, but their large windows overlooking 100 S make diners feel connected to the street. Perfect for when you are craving dining on a street scene, but perhaps the weather is not cooperating. Drinks: Beerhive. Literally right across the street from the theater is beervana. The patio is small, so hopefully you can snag a table. On nice evenings they open the large doors, and the front of the bar and patio become one. Whiskey Street. Walk a few blocks south, and you’ll be rewarded with one of Utah’s largest selection of whiskey, scotch, and bourbon, as well as craft beer and wine. While this is technically a bar, the kitchen serves Advertorial

up restaurant quality food on par with any fine dining in the city. Rooftops: Well, sorta….most of our rooftop options are just a couple stories high. But, that’s all we need to get mountain views and a bird’s eye view of the sidewalk and streets below. The Green Pig Pub. One level up from the main bar area overlooking 400 S, City and County building and the

distant Wasatch mountains makes “The Pig” a summer favorite. Expansive shades and misters keep things cool even on the hottest of days. Gracie’s. If you are after good food, great drinks and a couple of patios to choose from, Gracie’s is the only answer. As a gastropub, Gracie’s excels in food and drink, boasts an active dance floor, and has unparalleled views of the peaks from their upper patio.
