In a world where knowledge is prized above all, how much should a simple piece of paper matter? At an elite university, a distinguished professor of history has just been nominated for a prestigious award, but the attention over that nomination has cast a confusing light on his academic credentials, with career-changing consequences for the professor, the dean of faculty, his graduate assistant and a student he teaches. A riveting examination of personal and professional ethics, as well as of the proper mission of higher education in America, Two Dollar Bill has the ripped-from-the-headlines timeliness that is sure to inspire water cooler conversations and dinner table debates among audiences who see it.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
C
hristmas came early to Pioneer Theatre Company this year. So early, in fact, that it was last winter when we first sat down to discuss handcrafting the show that would become the world premiere of It Happened One Christmas, designed especially for Salt Lake City theatergoers. Our goal from the beginning was an extravaganza-style revue that drew on all of our favorite material — carols, pop songs, instrumental music and timeless verse and prose — that evoked the joy of the holiday season. And we knew, of course, the experience would feature some sort of appearance by Old St. Nick. (If he was available, that is.)
12
I also knew from the start that we wanted the show to exist in the world of the theater itself. Sandbags. Curtains. Wings. Lights. Flying scenery. Trap doors. Colorful costumes. A ghostlight. Magic. When I first invited playwright Kenneth Jones (Alabama Story) to dream up this show with me, the only thing I said to him was, “I want to open with an exposed bare stage, and I want Christmas to spill out into it.” Ken picked up the cue and we landed on setting It Happened One Christmas in a shuttered old vaudeville house in downtown Salt Lake City, a place that might support multiple musical styles inspired by decades and decades of entertainment. Something for everyone. The old Orpheum Theatre downtown reportedly opened on Christmas Day in 1905. That seemed like a good place to begin. Over many months, Ken, musical director Tom Griffin and I dug through trunks of material to piece together a broad puzzle. We listened to hundreds of seasonal songs, and even some nonholiday numbers that evoked the spiritual good will of the season. We pored over spoken material, plays, newspaper reporting, poetry, sacred texts, fiction and more. In one of the hottest summers on record in New York City and Utah, we engaged in creative meetings where the word “snow” was used so often that it made us want to wear woolly mittens in July. Our tireless design team — including lighting designer Kirk Bookman, costume designer Kevin Alberts and the indefatigable and extraordinary scenic designer George Maxwell — joined in the fun starting the process of going from the page to the stage. With a little help from some resident technical geniuses and our very special friend Kathie Horman — PTC’s Christmas angel — the holiday season started to arrive here in late August. The result, we hope, is a quirky, idiosyncratic, tuneful show that creates a magical vision of Christmas, with some local color thrown in for good measure. We know that some of your favorite holiday songs are here, as well as some of your most cherished yule stories, but we also hope there are new discoveries that will become part of your Christmas memory book. We’re glad you’re sharing the most wonderful time of the year with us in the theater. Enjoy! Karen Azenberg IT HAPPENED ONE CHRISTMAS

IT HAPPENED ONE CHRISTMAS
The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth The Painful Truth ad your eyes to the world will open pre-print of those who are stigmatized page 45 and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain. “This book gives voice to real people who suffer with chronic pain and to their caregivers. With the wisdom and compassion of a seasoned practitioner, he tells their stories....We would all do well to heed the call of those forced to live with chronic pain. This excellent book is a very good place to start.” —The Rev. George Anthony Hoeltzel, Episcopal priest, Yonkers, New York
