Director’s Note

Dear Patron, We lost two dear friends of Odyssey this year: Rowland Butler, who was my first jazz teacher and a member of our board, and Julia Miller Bryce, one of the most amazing dancers we’ve had on the Company. We had the privilege of performing at Rowland’s memorial and chose Let It Be as the most appropriate thing we could do - and it touched us all! Julia was excited and gearing up to perform with us this season, when she shockingly and suddenly passed. She was going to reprise her solo “Julia” as part of Let It Be and so I have decided to include that solo as part of the show via video tape. Her parents named her for one of their favorite Beatles songs and years ago, we surprised them with her actually dancing to it. Tears of gratitude flowed then, and tears of sorrow flow now, as we dedicate this entire season to two amazing individuals who have touched our lives in so many ways! As part of our memorial to Julia, Eldon Johnson and Christina Bluth will be reprising their solos in Let It Be and in the April 7th performance many of Julia’s fellow dancers will participate on stage as a final tribute to their lost friend and fellow artist. We express our deepest condolences to Julia’s and Rowland’s families and friends, and we’re sure that somewhere up there they’re still dancing! Next, we are off on our twelfth consecutive European tour--shows every night in a different city, for a wild three weeks; standing room only, and standing ovations every night! And now in this season we’ve brought back two audience favorites and added three more World Premieres! We are grateful for the opportunity we have had to rehearse at The Pointe Performing Arts Academy in Highland and bid them a fond farewell. Odyssey has taken up residence in Salt Lake City and is currently rehearsing at the wonderful Ballet West Trolley Square Campus! ODT has been and still is a dream come true! And I wish to thank all of you for your support and attendance. Derryl

THANK YOU!! As did its founders, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation takes an active part in supporting Utah’s vibrant arts community, including the visual arts, music, dance, and creative expression of many kinds. The arts have been woven tightly into the fabric of the state since the earliest days of its Native American residents and pioneer settlers. Today, thanks to a continued emphasis on the arts among Utah’s citizenry, the state boasts world-class arts organizations that foster excellence and professionalism at the highest artistic levels.

Guest Artists CHRISTIAN DENICE (Choreographer - Salvages) began his professional dance career at Odyssey Dance Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, and spent the next three years at River North Dance Chicago in Chicago, IL, under the direction of Frank Chaves. There, Mr. Denice worked with such choreographers as Robert Battle, Sidra Bell, Lauri Stallings, and Frank Chaves. He has guest performed with the Montgomery Ballet, Greensboro Ballet, and Company E. Recently, Christian lived in Montreal, Quebec where he danced for Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal and had the privilege of performing works by Andonis Foniadakis, Cayetano Soto, Wen Wei Wang, and Barak Marshall. In addition to dancing, Christian teaches and choreographs nationally and internationally. He has created works for Odyssey Dance Theatre, Odyssey II, Expansions Dance Company, River North Dance Chicago in collaboration with Frank Chaves, LEVELdance Chicago, DanceWorks Chicago, Interlochen Center for the Arts, METdance too, the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, and Missouri Contemporary Ballet. Christian is the 2015-2016 winner of the University of South Florida’s Echo Choreographic Competition, and had a two-week residency at the university where he restaged his 2011 work, “ raum”. He is also the 2016 winner of the Joffrey Academy’s Winning Works Choreographic competition where he had the honor of creating a work on the trainee and studio company dancers. In April 2016, Christian directed and choreographed a short dance film entitled “the watchers” filmed by Salt Lake City based videographer Bryce Johnson. This summer, Christian will be on faculty with DanceWorks Chicago Dance360 and AXIS Connect Los Angeles, as well as a new commission with Modern America Dance Company in St. Louis. MEGAN ADELSBERGER (Choreographer - Reverse Osmosis) began her dance training at Elower-Sicilia Productions in Maryland and was a member of their performing arts company for thirteen years. During her summers she continued to develop her artistry at studios in New York City and Los Angeles. Megan attended The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and spent two years traveling the world while performing on Holland America Cruise Ships. She was a featured dancer in Cultural Soul’s show Movement, artistically directed by Moncell “ill kozby” Durden. Megan has choreographed and danced in multiple music videos for several underground artists and had her choreography showcased in The Eureka Dance Festival in Washington D.C. as well as Creators Grid in Salt Lake City. Megan can be found on So You Think You Can Dance during Season 6 and 7 of “Vegas Week” and the LA Results Episode. She was also on a Nigel Lythgoe Productions T.V. series on Ovation called A Chance To Dance where she had the opportunity to study under Michael Nunn and William Trevitt formerly of The Royal Ballet. She danced in a Hallmark film titled “Dear Dumb Diary” choreographed by Bonnie Story and has performed live at the Capezio ACE Awards, Jazz Dance World Congress, and The Bboy Federation’s “They Reminisce.” Megan spent 5 years touring internationally as a company member with Odyssey Dance Threatre and is currently one of the producers, directors, choreographers, and principle dancers of Urban Fairytalez. She travels to Haiti and instructs year round for Lovolution, Releve, and the I’m Training Dance Convention based out of Chihuahua, Mexico. While Megan is not busy performing, she continues to share her passion teaching and choreographing for industrials, workshops, shows, dance companies and in studios across the nation including Salt Lake City’s Millennium Dance Complex and Pioneer High School for the Performing Arts.

In Memoriam Odyssey Dance Theatre dedicates this entire season to two special friends we recently lost:

Rowland Millar Butler 1939 - 2017 The final curtain has been drawn for Rowland Millar Butler; father, entertainer, teacher, mentor to many and friend to everyone. Rowland was born May 4, 1939, and passed away on February 14, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother Florence; father Arvid; and son Jason. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Butler; son Brandon A. Butler; grandsons Gabriel and Samuel; and step-children Heather, Shawn, Christie, and Wendell. Rowland fell in love with dance at a very young age. He began dancing at the age of six, and taught dance till almost the very day he passed. He toured as a guest instructor and performer in the United States, South America, and Asia. He was one of the charter members of Ballet West and the Utah Ballet. He was an Assistant Professor of Ballet and Theater at the University of Utah, and resident Choreographer at Pioneer Memorial theater for 18 years. He was the owner and operator of Butler Dance Academy for 3 decades, where he taught tap, ballet and Jazz, to hundreds, if not thousands of students. His students have performed on and off Broadway, such as Cats, A Chorus Line and Les Miserable; in movies such as Footloose, and For the Boys; T.V; in Las Vegas; and various road companies In his retirement, he went on to teach at various Public schools, continuing his commitment to the arts by developing programs for Arts Education. He was the first Professional to be awarded an Eminence Teaching Certification from the Utah State Board of Educations in June of 2005. Rowland spent his entire 77 years of life dedicated to bringing joy, and to bettering the lives of others’ through dance, and by just being himself. Rowland was beloved by many, and loving each of them in return with all he could give. Julia MIller Bryce August 31, 1981 - February 5, 2017 A light in our lives, Julia Miller Bryce peacefully passed away at the tender age of 35, on February 5, 2017. Ever since she was born, Julia was our star performer. Many were drawn to and entertained by this comedian, mischief maker, and all-around cutie-pie. Her charisma and good heart created many friendships and these qualities were especially evident when she danced. Julie’s talents on stage took her all over the world allowing her to perform with the companies of world famous choreographers Louis Van Amstel and Mia Michaels. Locally, she danced with The Dance Club between the ages of 12-18, the Utah Jazz, and spent 7 years with Odyssey Dance Theatre. Recently she loved taking dance classes at Millennium Dance Complex. Her family would like to give sincere thanks to these organizations for helping Julia develop her passion for dance and for the dear friendships they provided her. Entertainment value aside, she was most cherished for her kind and loving nature. She especially had a heart for children. She leaves a well-known legacy as an amazing dancer, but offstage she was a complete klutz. Stories of her falling up the stairs and dropping entire cakes are legendary. She loved reading, traveling, Hamilton, Big Hunks, Circus Peanuts, taking pictures, Dr. Pepper, and keeping journals. Some of her happiest times were spent with her best friends/adopted sisters Amy and Erin. Her precious family are shattered; husband, Derek; children Ryan Sierra, Annie Juliette, Mason Todd, and Jackson Andrew. She is preceded in death by her beloved father, Dick, who she is performing her famous high kicks dance for in heaven. Also devastated are her mother, Susan Kimball Miller, her partners in crime: brother Aaron Miller (Mariel) and sister Jamie Gausnell (Clint) and five nieces and nephews with whom she doted on at every opportunity. She also adored her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins, who were more like siblings to her. Family meant everything to Julie. Authentic, open-minded, inquisitive, bold and daring, Julia followed her own path without fear or regret. In honor of her, we ask you to seek adventure, try something new that you have always wanted to do, cuddle a baby, and of course, dance like no one is watching. Odyssey Dance Theatre – 17
