Director’s Note Dear Patron, Here we are celebrating our 20th anniversary season, and I can’t help but reflect on this amazing “Odyssey” we’ve been on and the incredible year we have had. Thriller was a huge hit again with two companies for the eighth year in a row and over 52 performances and our ninth year in a row winning Best of State Dance Company. Something seems to be going right! We recently had our fourth annual competition/workshop at the Utah Valley Convention Center (with an unprecedented number of entries) and next, we are off on our tenth consecutive European tour--shows every night in a different city, for a wild three weeks; standing room only and standing ovations every night. The ReduxNut-Cracker, our updated version of the Christmas classic, was great fun to do and well received by our audiences, proving that we have found our own niche of Utah’s holiday entertainment market for years to come! And here we are – presenting another World-Premiere full-length work – Carmen. As I looked at how to re-imagine and update this classic tale of love, passion, obsession and revenge, it occurred to me that Carmen is really a stalker story, and certainly something we still see today. So we decided to set it around a group of dancers who want to get onto a TV show much like “So You Think You Can Dance” (on which 8 members of Odyssey have appeared!). This gave us an opportunity to create a show within a show – and make what normally is a 40-minute ballet suite into a full-length production. We have used selections from Bizet’s Carmen suite, which was based on his Opera, and although Bizet created many wonderful passages of music, there was not enough to tell the story our way, so we have filled it with current contemporary music that not only provides a wonderful base for choreography, but also helps tell the story through the music’s themes, lyrics, and feelings. It also allowed Odyssey to show the numerous styles of dance they are famous for and create many entertaining pieces along the way. We hope you enjoy this unique version of Carmen. It seems a perfect way to celebrate our 20th season. Derryl P.S. Please be sure to select Odyssey as your favorite charity on March 26, 2015, the third annual Love UT Give UT--the statewide day of giving event (loveutgiveut.razoo.com) and help Odyssey continue to bring world-class dance and entertainment to our community. Thank you for your support!

Special Guest KYLE BAUMANN (Technical Director & Lighting Designer) Kyle is happy to be continuing his adventure with Odyssey. Kyle began designing for Odyssey back in 2011 for Thriller, presented at Tuacahn Center for the Arts. The following year, he designed Thriller once again for Tuacahn, as well as at the Austad Auditorium, on the campus of Weber State University in Ogden, and Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City. He then moved on from the zombies and vampires to the company’s 2013 Romeo and Juliet, Dance Fever, Thriller and finished out the year with the premiere of The ReduxNut-Cracker, and has been working with Odyssey since. He then had the privilege of designing the Tuacahn Center for the Arts production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, under the direction of Derryl Yeager this past 2014 fall season. He has just concluded his seventh and final season as Lighting Director for Tuacahn, and now has the privilege to be Odyssey’s full time Technical Director & Lighting Designer. Kyle has had the pleasure of working with such big name artists as Foreigner, Kansas, CCR, Styx, Peter Frampton, .38 Special, Huey Lewis and the News, Heart and many more. He currently resides in Santa Clara, Utah with his beautiful wife, Samantha, darling daughter Anya Kay, and baby boy Eli Jordan.

As did its founders, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation takes an active part in supporting Utah’s vibrant arts community, including the visual arts, music, dance, and creative expression of many kinds. The arts have been woven tightly into the fabric of the state since the earliest days of its Native American residents and pioneer settlers. Today, thanks to a continued emphasis on the arts among Utah’s citizenry, the state boasts world-class arts organizations that foster excellence and professionalism at the highest artistic levels. 10 – Shut Up & Dance 2015
