WELCOME

Steven Brosvik President & CEO

Thomas M. Love Board of Trustees Chairman

On behalf of the board, staff, artists, and musicians of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre for this presentation of the simultaneously comical and deeply human opera Flight by composer Jonathan Dove and librettist April de Angelis. To witness together the experiences of the characters stranded at an airport during a storm through this live theatrical blend of music, poetry, and stagecraft allows us a powerful opportunity to gain empathetic understanding of others. By experiencing, live and synchronously, the emotions of the situation in the heightened way that music allows, we are all connected— audience, cast, and orchestra—in a truly meaningful way. If you’ve attended past Utah Opera productions, you’ve likely noticed performances by our Resident Artists, who are among the best and brightest young singers and pianists beginning their operatic careers. Today we are thrilled to feature the return of former Resident Artist Abigail Rethwisch (2016-18) and current Resident Artist singers Julia Gershkoff, Edith Grossman, Daniel O’Hearn, and Evan Hammond on the stage as well as the work of pianist Natasha Talukdar Elam in the musical preparation of this opera. In addition to their featured work in our mainstage productions, these professional artists tour the state (virtually and in person), presenting age-appropriate educational and musically inspiring programming in Utah schools and community spaces. Their performances are just a few of the many programs we offer to every public school in the state of Utah over a three-to five-year cycle. Much credit goes to the Utah State Legislature, which values these programs and provides over one-third of the support toward their cost. The remainder of that credit goes to our many individual donors, corporate sponsors and foundation sponsors who cumulatively match the state’s support. Thank you for attending today’s performance. We hope you will join us throughout the season for memorable productions of musical storytelling and that you will help us thank our legislators and the many generous sponsors (pp. 7 and 30–42 ) who made this production and our education programs possible.

Christopher McBeth Artistic Director 4

JET-AGE PILGRIMS ON A SMALL PLANET By Michael Clive

The Glyndebourne Festival Opera, which commissioned Flight, is something unusual in the opera world—unabashedly traditional, but also boldly progressive. Musical and production values have been uncompromising since its founding in 1934. And so has the dress code: On summer afternoons, London office workers can be seen hurrying from their jobs wearing strictly formal attire—black or white tie, long evening gowns—headed for Victoria Station to catch the train for Lewes on the Brighton line. There they disembark for the local bus to the Glyndebourne opera house, where there are also special accommodations for limousines and their drivers alongside the stately home where the Festival is located.

Flight’s composer Jonathan Dove and librettist April De Angelis also saw: This is an environment that is totally operatic. There the most intense extremes of human behavior—humorous and tragic, political and personal, raucous and reflective— play out every moment of every day. And, happily for us operagoers, the creators of Flight and The Magic Flute have something else in common: a brilliantly matched pairing of composer and librettist. For British audiences, of course, the latent presence of another masterpiece almost goes without saying: Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, in which the chance encounters of travelers on the road reveal the richness of human existence.

And yet, if the past seems alive at Glyndebourne, so does the future of opera. It’s no place for stick-in-the-mud orthodoxy. In fact, in 1998, when the Festival mounted the premiere production of Flight, it was not the first time an opera set at an airport had been seen on the Festival stage; three years earlier, the director Peter Sellars had presented his updated version of The Magic Flute there, a production set at Los Angeles International Airport. (Your fearless annotator was in attendance, covering the occasion for the now-defunct magazine Opera Monthly.)

In creating Flight, Dove and De Angelis took as their inspiration the experience of Mehran Karimi Nasseri, an Iranian refugee whose ambiguous immigration status—his identity documents had been lost or stolen—left him stranded at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris for 18 years, prohibited from leaving the terminal building and dependent upon airport staff and his own will and good humor for survival. Nasseri’s story also provided the basis for the 2004 Spielberg feature The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks. The film was conceived more than six years after the opera and has no connection to it.

In the literal and symbolic crossroads of a major airport, Sellars recognized what

LIMINAL SPACES By Jeff Counts

For its 1998-1999 season, Glyndebourne Opera asked composer Jonathan Dove to create nothing less than “a Marriage of Figaro for the 1990s”. No big deal, right? Just be the Mozart of our decade. Simple. Of course, it meant writing a comedy. This made a lot of sense, in Dove’s opinion, since comedy was something he felt was “in short supply in twentieth-century opera”. He knew this new work couldn’t just be funny though, not if old master Wolfgang was to be truly and honorably invoked. It needed to be darkly funny—an incisive study of manners, morals and class, set against recognizable, relatable backdrops. For this, Dove chose his setting and subject matter well. Mehran Nasseri was right in the middle of his 18-year stint as a refugee at Charles de Gaulle airport when Dove used his plight as a loose inspiration for his opera Flight. The story would eventually get a mildly successful Hollywood treatment in 2004, thanks to Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, but Dove definitely got there first. He instinctively knew that an airport gate, especially one populated by frustrated travelers, would be an ideal location to explore the fragility of our modern social contracts. Flight, like the best works of Mozart, is an ensemble piece. It was purposely built to showcase interactions over monologues and supports a stage full of “main” characters whose charms and foibles conflate in every possible way. Though the unnamed Refugee’s story might seem most important, given that it was drawn

20

from an actual occurrence, it is but one of the interlocking comic dramas that make up Flight. Everyone’s issues get equal weight. That said, the choices Dove made in his characterization of this trapped man does invite deeper exploration. Why, for instance, does the Refugee exist at a such remove from the other members of the cast? It can’t just be his stateless status that sets him so apart. They do notice him, his temporary terminal-mates, when it suits them. But why is he an oracle one minute and an inert prop the next? And why does Dove further confirm the Refugee’s nebulous outsider status by writing his part for opera’s most fascinating and arresting voice type? Countertenors have been having a bit of a moment since the last decades of the 20th century. Audiences and marketing departments adore them. And why not? With juicy parts like the title role in Philip Glass’ Akhnaten and iconic characters in works by Thomas Ades, Harrison Birtwistle, Nico Muhly, and Hans Werner Henze, male falsetto singers are clearly no novelty. Distinct from the castrati and the lurid curiosity that surrounds their history, countertenors have been around since at least the 17th century, where they extended the range of all-male church ensembles without resorting to the knife. Their participation in pre-20th-century opera, however, was infrequent at best and almost never prescribed. How, then, did countertenors become the most interesting men in opera? Well, they have two people

LIMINAL SPACES to thank. The contemporary resurgence of this unique vocal category owes much to Sir Alfred Deller and the rising popularity of Renaissance and Baroque song he championed in the 1940s and 1950s. But it was his 1960 collaboration with Benjamin Britten on the role of Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream that really put his voice type on the path to celebrity. It’s impossible to imagine Glass or any of the others would have made use of it later had Britten not loosed his otherworldly Fairy King on the world. What makes Oberon so mesmerizing is the how coolly he diverges from expectation. None of the traditions of masculinity, or humanity for that matter, find much purchase in the sound of his voice. His place in the world is oblique to ours. He is unknowable, beyond our ken. As a mechanism for projecting Oberon’s creepy “otherness,” Britten’s choice of Deller was a brilliant gamble. Dove made a similar bet on his Refugee in Flight. He’s neither a god nor a ghost, but like both he can easily embody the indeterminate liminality of an airport. He’s almost like Cherubino in the aforementioned Marriage of Figaro. Almost. That character is also a subversion

of sonic norms in that, as a “pants” role, his behavior pits the hallmarks of the overstimulated scamp against a voice we don’t typically associate with one. This is why I don’t believe Mozart simply intended him to sound young by writing for a soprano. I think he was looking for some of that remove, that moral or existential distance. Just like with our Refugee. I know, I know. Cherubino moves through his plot like a noisy dog, while the Refugee mostly lingers and bestows questionable gifts in his. They are different. But their voices, they both just grab your eyes and hold them. Flight accurately breaks down the various ways we exasperate each other by turning up the mitigating factors of confinement and delayed resolution. No setting symbolizes this better than an airport terminal and no voice type exemplifies the Refugee’s isolation from the rest of the (temporarily) imprisoned ensemble than that of the countertenor. They might all be stuck in the same web for a night, but he’s not the same kind of fly. Even if they warm to him, the Refugee won’t be able to break free with them. He’s too odd, too peripheral. And that’s never clearer than when he’s singing.

THE STORY OF FLIGHT

DMMO Flight, 2018; photo Duane Tinkey ACT I

At a typically bustling international airport of unspecified location, travelers are hurriedly crossing paths. But not everyone is trying to get somewhere else, and we soon encounter three who have nowhere to go. Two work at the airport: its Controller and an Immigration Officer. The third is the Refugee, unable to leave the airport because he does not have a passport or other documents to allow him to enter the country legally. The Immigration Officer is trying to find the Refugee and arrest him. More characters join the scene. Bill and Tina, a married couple on holiday, are hoping to revive their stale relationship with the help time off, a change of scenery, and a sex manual. Traveling incognito, an Older Woman is also in the terminal awaiting her “fiancé” — a younger man who has promised to meet her. A couple from the Belarussian city of Minsk (noted in the cast as the Minskman and Minskwoman) are relocating for the husband’s latest diplomatic assignment. The very pregnant

Minskwoman seems ready to deliver at any moment. There are also a Stewardess and Steward, who — by all appearances — share a useful understanding and dynamic sex life. At the last minute, Minskwoman is afraid to fly, and the frustrated Minskman leaves without her. The Flight Controller warns of approaching storms. The Older Woman’s fiancé is nowhere to be seen, and Bill and Tina prepare to depart. As the act closes, the stormy weather overtakes the airport, forcing the cancellation of all travel plans. ACT II

It is a desolate night at the airport. Planes are not arriving or leaving. Passengers sleep anywhere they can find space to lie down, or seek another way to pass the time. Bill, attempting to break out of his “predictable” nature, tries making a pass at the Stewardess, or so he thinks; to his surprise, his target turns out to be the Steward, and the two men decide to

25

THE STORY OF FLIGHT make their way to make their way to the airport control tower as an adventure. The Flight Controller, frustrated by the general paralysis and grounded flights, explodes in a tantrum that he directs at the storm outside the tower. These actions are punctuated at various points by the Refugee’s attempts to charm the women who cross his path; he offers each a “magic stone” that he says will cure their troubles. The women toast their good fortune and drink with him. Eventually, as the storm and the women’s intoxication build, they discover that the Refugee has given them all the same stone and angrily turn against him, knocking him unconscious and concealing him in a suitcase. But alone in the intimate confines of the tower, Bill and the Steward’s adventure has turned sexual. ACT III

Dawn has come to the airport. The violent weather has subsided, and the dazed characters are chagrined as they contemplate their actions of the previous night. Soon the Controller is relieved to announce the arrival of a plane; Minskman,

feeling that he cannot continue his mission without his wife at his side, has returned on it. Signs of normal life begin to resume throughout the terminal. Tina, enraged to learn of Bill’s sexual encounter, angrily strikes him with their sex manual, knocking him unconscious; Minskwoman goes into labor and delivers her baby; the Refugee awakens from the trunk. Confronted with their actions in the face of newborn life, the travelers reflect on their lives and offer forgiveness to each other. When the Immigration Officer finally catches up with the Refugee, some passengers demand his arrest, while others try to persuade the Officer to “review the situation.” At first The Immigration Officer is implacable, citing the need to observe the rules. But when the Refugee explains why he lacks documentation, his listeners are touched— including the Officer. His decision: although the Refugee cannot leave the terminal, The Officer will “turn a blind eye” and not arrest him.

COMPOSER AND LIBRETTIST Jonathan Dove Jonathan Dove’s music has filled opera houses with delighted audiences of all ages on five continents. Few, if any, contemporary composers have so successfully or consistently explored the potential of opera to communicate, to create wonder, and to enrich people’s lives. Born in 1959 to architect parents, Dove’s early musical experience came from playing the piano, organ, and viola. Later he studied composition with Robin Holloway at Cambridge and, after graduation, worked as a freelance accompanist, repetiteur, animateur and arranger. His early professional experience gave him a deep understanding of singers and the complex mechanics of the opera house. Opera and the voice have been the central priorities in Dove’s output throughout his subsequent career. Jonathan Dove Composer

Starting with his breakthrough opera Flight, commissioned by Glyndebourne in 1998, Dove has gone on to write almost thirty operatic works. Flight, a rare example of a successful modern comic opera, has been produced and broadcast many times, in Europe, the USA, and Australia. Jonathan Dove was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music.to be re-interred in the church of Santa Croce in Florence.
