ANTICI……..say it!.......PATION! Have you ever done the Time Warp? Or are you a virgin? No matter. All are welcome to the first-ever Pioneer Theatre Company concert of The Rocky Horror Show. This is, I hope, the first in a series of musical concert stagings here at PTC. There are so many wonderful musicals out there—new, old, large, small—and not enough weeks in the year (or dollars in the budget!) to produce them all. But this new program lets some of these gems shine, as add-ons in our season. Though slightly scaled back in some areas, we will always present the entire show with a superbly talented cast. Rocky Horror seemed like the perfect vehicle for this new format here at PTC. (For the record, I lost my Rocky Horror virginity at the famous Waverly Theatre in the West Village in New York City. I had never experienced anything like it!) So grab your newspaper, confetti, frankfurter, and let me take you—if I may—on a strange journey… Karen Azenberg Director

CARLETON BLUFORD (Riff Raff) Past PTC credits: In the Heights (Graffiti Pete) and Alabama Story staged reading (Joshua Moore). Carleton has appeared in Plan-B’s Wallace, SLAM and The Third Crossing (nominated for three Arty Awards, Salt Lake City Weekly. Other acting credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (Park City’s Egyptian Theatre), Ragtime (Hale Center Theatre), The Overwhelming, (Salt Lake Acting Company), Ruined (People Productions), and Civil War with Merrill Osmond (Hale Centre Theatre). Recent film credits: Saints & Soldiers: The Void and Stop Pepper Palmer (Best Supporting Actor, WorldFest Houston). As a playwright, his play Breathe was read as part of the Utah AIDS Foundation/Plan-B AIDS Plays and his play Niggah was read as part of the Edward Lewis Black Theatre Festival. Mama is his first full-length production (Plan-B). He is excited to return to PTC. ASHLEY GARDNER CARLSON (Janet) Regional Credits: Alabama Shakespeare, Welk Resort San Diego, Starlight Musical Theatre, Moonlight Amphitheater, Disneyland Entertainment. Ashley is currently performing the role of Lola in Damn Yankees at the Hale Center Theater Orem. Other PTC credits include: Miss Saigon (Ellen u/s), A Chorus Line (Kristine), Annie, A Christmas Carol: The Musical (Emily u/s), Les Misérables (Cosette u/s) and Sweet Charity (Charity u/s). Ashley holds an MBA from Westminster College. JIM DABAKIS (Narrator) does government work. He was born in Massachusetts. He came to Provo in 1971 to go to University—as there are no good schools in Massachusetts. On stage, Dabakis appeared in a roadshow at Forest Park Jr. High. His performance was praised by some family members. He aspires to do a Chekov play, in Russian (which he must learn) at the Hale Centre Theatre.

WHO’S WHO GAREN MCROBERTS (Rocky Horror) is so excited to be making his Pioneer Theatre Company debut. Recent credits include: Thoroughly Modern Millie (Jimmy; Prism Theatrics), Miss Saigon (2013 Tour), South Pacific (Riverside Theatre), and Little House on the Prairie starring Melissa Gilbert (First National Tour). This summer, Garen spent time as a teacher and representative of ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty) in Mumbai and Pune, India. He was a part of Mel Brooks’ tribute at The Kennedy Center Honors and is a former World Tap Dance Champion. Eric holds a BFA from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. DANIEL T. SIMONS (Eddie, Ensemble) is excited to return to PTC after many shows, including Les Misérables, Rent, Sunset Boulevard, 42nd Street, Miss Saigon, others. Originally from New York, her work there includes Lyrics and Lyricists (92nd St. Y), Blocks (a collaboration with Jonathan Larson), Prom Queens Unchained, and choreography for Richard Greenberg’s The Dazzle (Roundabout). Other credits include national tours of Carousel and Brigadoon, Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor (Regional Theatre Premiere at Geva), West Side Story (over 15 productions; Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Choreography), A Christmas Memory (Alabama Shakespeare Festival), and Same Time Next Year (Indiana Repertory Theatre). He would like to thank Reed and Carol Stringham for their love and support. RICHARD O’BRIEN (Music, Books and Lyrics) was born Richard Smith in Cheltenham, England. His family moved to Tauranga, New Zealand, in 1951 when his father, an accountant, decided to become a sheep farmer. Smith moved back to England in 1964 and changed his name to Richard O’Brien, which was his maternal grandmother’s name, and became a movie stuntman and fringe theater actor. In 1972, director Jim Sharman cast him in the dual roles of Apostle and Leper for the London stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar; the pair also worked together later on a production of Sam Shepard’s The Unseen Hand. O’Brien mentioned to Sharman a new rock musical he’d been writing, which was then called Rock Horroar.

The play went into rehearsals with Sharman as its director under the title They Came from Denton High, and was retitled The Rocky Horror Show before opening in June 1973. O’Brien also co-wrote the screenplay of the 1975 film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and appeared in the film as the character Riff Raff. O’Brien still works as a successful actor, writer, broadcaster, voice actor and theater performer. RICH COLE (Casting) has happily served as PTC’s casting director since 2001. He has helped to populate more than 500 shows for Broadway, off-Broadway, National Tours, London, Dublin, Vienna and over thirty-five of this nation’s major regional theatres. For this work, the Casting Society of America thrice nominated him for the prestigious Artios Award. Also a director and playwright, he is the founding Artistic Director of New York’s The Urban Rock Project, whose critically acclaimed production of Patriot Acts was one of the highlights of a recent New York International Fringe Festival. His play Unnatural Acts won the 2002 OOBR Award for Excellence. Rich made his Salt Lake City directing debut with The Caucasian Chalk Circle for the U of U’s Department of Theatre.
