Molière

DIRECTOR’S6 NOTE

“Some of the most famous books are the least worth reading. Their fame was due to their having done something that needed to be done in their day. The work is done, and the virtue of the book has expired.”

It is a flawed offering for a complicated world, presented with a twinkle in the eye and love at its heart . So welcome to Scapin, a play conceived for Pioneer Theatre Company . This world premiere belongs to you . My thanks to the team at Pioneer and this remark able and talented cast, creatives, and crew . Sit back, turn off notifications, and enjoy .

Molière

Sitting in the bookshop at the National Theatre in London, reading my fourth or fifth translation of a different Molière play, an idea hit me . All the scripts I was reading were terrific, inspiring… and entirely of their time . That’s what we needed; An adaptation for our time . I phoned artistic director Karen Azenberg and shared the idea you are about to see…

Actors were, historically, known as players, and play has been a central part of how we put this show together, playing with ideas, words, and our bodies . And laughter, I can’t remember so much laughter in a rehearsal room . Comedy is a serious business, and after so many months of navigating the global pandemic, and its ongoing threat to all of us, it has been cathartic and wonderful to create this show .

“Life is a tragedy to those who feel and a comedy to those who think.”

Scapin is the naughty servant who, through mischief and misadventure, exposes the fragility of authority . Scapin is a satire, a farce that intends to entertain with a sting in its tail (tale) . Molière was a satirist like Cruickshank, Voltaire, Philip Guston, or Trey Parker and Matt Stone . He holds ‘as t’were the mirror up to nature’ and reminds us that power is there to be mocked and interrogated, not idolized and worshiped .
