Welcome Back! This season at the Utah Shakespeare Festival is a time of celebration: 2021 marks our sixtieth anniversary year, a joyous return to our stages after a season canceled by the pandemic, and a season dedicated to our beloved founder, Fred C. Adams who passed away last year. We are producing a full season of eight plays, The Greenshow, production seminars, orientations, and more. And permeating everything this year will be Fred's spirit of excitement, adventure, vision, and love. FESTIVAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion The Utah Shakespeare Festival is committed to the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do. This requires our devotion to erase all traces of systemic racism, within our organization and everywhere else we can affect it.

Indigenous Land Acknowledgement The Utah Shakespeare Festival has both historical and contemporary relationships with Indigenous peoples. Given that Southern Utah has always been a gathering place for Indigenous peoples, we acknowledge that this Too’veep (land) is the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Nung’wu (Southern Paiutes). The Utah Shakespeare Festival recognizes the enduring relationship between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We are grateful for the territory upon which we gather today; we respect Utah’s Indigenous peoples, the original stewards of this land; and we value our relationship with the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah. To this end, we acknowledge and honor the Tribe for its resilience, its deep connection to this land, and express our appreciation for the opportunity to live, learn, and enrich the lives of all those who gather on their homelands.

Shakespeare wrote that “we know what we are, but not what we may be.” We resolve that the Festival may be fully antiracist, embracing all people who have been under-represented on our stages and that we will be a theatre that depicts, investigates, and celebrates the lives and humanity of people who have suffered discrimination and persecution, in order to play our part in relieving the oppression that, sadly, continues to this day while also honoring the vast tapestry of humanity.

PERICLES The Story of the Play the shameful answer to the riddle and, fearing for his life, hastens home. Terrified that Antiochus’s wrath will follow him, he decides to “go travel for a while.” His first destination is famine-stricken Tarsus where he brings a shipload of provisions to rulers Cleon and Dionyza. Then he puts to sea for parts unknown. In a terrible storm at sea, his ship is wrecked leaving Pericles as the only survivor. He is saved by three fishermen when he is cast up on the shore of Pentapolis, the kingdom of King Simonides. Hearing that the king is about to give a tournament in honor of his daughter Thaisa’s birthday, Pericles enters the tourney. Thaisa and Pericles fall in love at first sight, and Thaisa tells her father of her choice. King Simomides sees the young lovers quickly married.

Pericles, prince of Tyre, is one of the suitors for the hand of the beautiful daughter of Antiochus, king of Antioch. To win her hand, Pericles must solve a riddle or be executed. Pericles deciphers

PERICLES Pericles, sends word that Antiochus has died and so it is finally safe for Pericles to return home. Pericles reveals to his new family that he is a king and plans to journey home. Tragedy strikes on the stormy voyage to Tyre when Thaisa dies giving birth to a daughter. Yielding to the sailors’ superstitions, Pericles throws her entombed body overboard. The coffin is found by a priest of Diana at Ephesus; and the priest finds Thaisa is not dead, restores her to health, and installs her as (assuming all is lost) a priestess of Diana.

and then sell her to a brothel in Mytilene. Marina refuses to become a prostitute and uses her virtues to cause all her would-be customers to reform their ways. Her father, in the meantime, visits Tarsus, and is so grief-stricken at the news of Marina’s supposed death that Pericles refuses to cut his hair or speak ever again. The sorrowing Pericles, sailing for Tyre, is blown by the wind to Mytilene. The governor of Mytilene, Lysimachus, boards Pericles’s ship to try and help the grieving king. Lysimachus is a patron of Marina’s school for the arts and suggests she can help King Pericles to heal. With surprise and great jubilation, he recognizes his lost daughter. Soon after, Pericles has a vision of the goddess Diana who urges him to go to her Temple in Ephesus where he must tell his story. Pericles and Marina arrive in Ephesus and find Thaisa there. After eighteen trying years, the family is joyfully reunited.

Meanwhile Pericles leaves his new daughter, Marina, and her nurse, Lychorida, with the governor of Tarsus, Cleon. Cleon and his wife Dionyza agree to raise Marina along with their own daughter. After living with Cleon eighteen years, Marina grows so talented at arts and music that she outshines Dionyza’s own daughter; so Dionyza arranges for her murder. Marina’s circumstance seems dire until she is captured from her murderer by pirates. The pirates take her to sea

RICHARD III The Story of the Play of our discontent/ Made glorious summer by this son of York,” (1.1.1–2) and which refers to the success of his brother Edward, Duke of York, who has overthrown Henry VI of Lancaster and taken the English throne. Edward is just one of the players between Richard of Gloucester and the crown. Richard halts the procession accompanying the casket of King Henry VI of Lancaster, whom Richard murdered in the Tower of London days before. Lady Anne Neville cries over the coffin of her father-in-law, as she is the widow of Henry’s only son Edward—whom Richard also murdered. Richard woos Anne and she agrees to become his bride. There is uneasy peace in the castle between the previously warring factions. Edward IV’s queen, Elizabeth Woodville, frequently butts heads with Richard as well as the deposed Queen Margaret of Anjou, widow of Henry VI. As political tensions rise, Margaret prophetically curses both sides.

Richard, Duke of Gloucester, plots to seize the crown from within his own family. The War of the Roses is over, leaving the House of York victorious over the House of Lancaster. He tells of his plans in the famous soliloquy that begins “Now is the winter

Now married to Anne, Richard’s next step to the throne is to eliminate his older brother, the Duke of Clarence. After Clarence’s death, King Edward also dies from his pre-existing illness. With the throne now vacant, plans are set in motion to crown Edward IV’s oldest son. Richard supercedes these plans, rushes the coronation, and sends the princes to the Tower— supposedly to better protect them. After careful maneuvering among London’s political leaders, a clever planting of slander regarding the bastardy of Edward IV and his children, and gaining support of the citizens, Richard ascends to the throne as King Richard III. His first act as king is to manipulate the murders of the two young princes. He then rids himself of his wife and plans to solidify his claim to the throne by marrying his brother Edward’s daughter. With the murder of the two boy princes confirmed, Richard meditates on the deeds he has performed to secure the throne, but his thoughts are interrupted by news that his most faithful ally, Buckingham, angered at the murders of the two princes and at Richard’s false dealings with him, has fled. To make matters more difficult, he is condemned by his own mother, as well as by the former queens. While Richard considers his future, the exiled Earl of Richmond, Henry Tudor of the House Lancaster, has raised an army and nears the west coast of Britain. Yet, in one final ruthless act, Richard captures his former friend Buckingham and has him beheaded.

The final battle is set: former allies have turned against Richard to join forces with Richmond who has landed and marches inland to claim the crown. As the warriors sleep on the eve of the battle, the ghosts of all those whom Richard has slaughtered return to condemn him and to hearten Richmond. Richmond’s forces defeat Richard’s army at the Battle of Bosworth Field wherein Richard utters the famous cry: “A horse, a horse! my kingdom for a horse!” (5.4.7) as his mount is slain during the battle. Henry Tudor finally slays Richard, exclaiming “the bloody dog is dead” (5.5.2). Accepting the crown as Henry VII, he promises to marry Elizabeth of York, thus uniting the white rose (the Yorkists) and the red rose (the Lancastrians) and commencing the Tudor reign.

THE COMEDY

PAROWAN

The Story of the Play Egeon, a merchant from Syracuse, is apprehended in Ephesus and condemned to death for violating a law that bars commerce and travel between the two cities. The only way he can avoid the penalty is to ransom his life for one hundred marks, a sum he neither has nor has any way of raising. Solinus, duke of Ephesus, asks the old man why he was traveling in the hostile city, and Egeon responds with his sad tale:

W ORLD FA M OUS C I NNAMON RO L L S

Over a quarter of a century earlier, Egeon and his wife, Emilia, became the parents of twin sons, and they soon followed that by buying another pair of twin boys, born “that same hour,” to be servants for their own sons. They named both sons Antipholus and both servants Dromio. In a shipwreck several years later, the family was separated. Egeon, with one twin son and his servant, was rescued by one ship; and his wife and the other two twins were rescued by another. Eighteen years later, the Antipholus raised by Egeon left Syracuse, along with his servant Dromio, to search the world over for his lost twin brother. When Antipholus and Dromio did not return after five years, his aged father set out on his own search, wandering vainly, only to be arrested and condemned to death in Ephesus on his way home.

OF ERRORS Meanwhile, unknown to any of the other characters, the Antipholus raised by Egeon (now known as Antipholus of Syracuse) arrives in Ephesus with his servant, Dromio of Syracuse. Also unknown to anybody (but the audience) is the fact that the other Antipholus (now known as Antipholus of Ephesus) is already living in the city with his wife, Adriana, and the other servant, Dromio of Ephesus. The stage is set and the series of “comedic errors” begins immediately and mounts throughout the play: Antipholus of Syracuse meets Dromio of Ephesus on the street and confronts him soundly because the servant tries to get Antipholus (the wrong master) to go “home” with him for dinner. Adriana locks her real husband out of their home because she is already in the house with his confused twin, Antipholus of Syracuse, whom she assumes is her husband. Antipholus of Ephesus refuses to pay Angelo the goldsmith for a gold chain he ordered, thinking he did not receive it (the chain was delivered to his surprised twin). Angelo wants his money and has Antipholus of Ephesus arrested. It is now Dromio of Syracuse (who is accused as being responsible for this) who is castigated by Antipholus of Ephesus (again, the wrong master). As the situation grows more and more bewildering, with everyone certain that everyone else is totally mad, the duke is preparing for Egeon’s impending execution. Antipholus of Ephesus goes to the duke and, thinking himself terribly wronged, demands that he intercede for him. Egeon sees his son and thinks he is saved; but, of course, Antipholus of Ephesus is the other twin and hasn’t seen his father since he was a child and does not recognize him. Finally, Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse take refuge in an abbey, only to emerge to face the other two twins, as well as Egeon, who, all at once, has found not just one son, but two. Then, to complete the reunion, the abbess reveals that she too has been living under disguise and is actually Egeon’s wife, Emilia. Egeon’s life is saved, the family embraces, as do the Dromio twins, and all ends in happiness, with Emilia inviting all to discuss this “one day’s error” and “make full satisfaction.” 27

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE The Story of the Play the young ladies that he is a pirate, but not for long. He asks if any of them will marry him, and the youngest, Mabel, agrees. The pirates enter the scene, and the sisters and pirates are taken with each other. Major-General Stanley enters and identifies himself as the girls’ father, demanding to know what is taking place. When the pirates tell Major-General Stanley that they intend to marry his daughters, he objects, saying he has an aversion to having pirates for sons-in-law; the pirates respond that they are opposed to having major-generals as fathers-inlaw, but that they will put aside the objection. Knowing the pirates’ weakness, Major-General Stanley tells them he is an orphan and, thus, disarms the pirates and takes his daughters, along with Frederic, away to his family chapel and estate. The major-general, who actually is not an orphan, soon feels guilty about the lie he told the pirates. Frederic, however, has a plan to lead a squad of zany policemen against his old gang.

On the coast of Cornwall, a gang of gentlemanly pirates play and party as Frederic (a pirate apprentice) reminds the pirate king that his obligation to the gang is soon over. He was apprenticed to the pirates only until his twentyfirst birthday, which is that day; so he is leaving them. Ruth (Frederic’s nursery maid when he was younger) explains that Frederic should never have been a pirate except for her mistake: She was told to apprentice Frederic to a pilot, but she misunderstood and placed him with a pirate instead.

Before he can act, however, the pirate king and Ruth arrive to tell him that he is still obligated to the pirates. Because Frederic was born on February 29 of a leap year, he has served only five birthdays, not the twenty-one required by his contract. A strong sense of duty forces Frederic to relent, and, because he is a member of the pirate band again, to reveal the truth that Major-General Stanley is not an orphan. The pirate king vows that he will have revenge on the major-general.

Frederic tells the pirates that, after he leaves the gang, he intends to destroy them—not because he doesn’t love them, but because he loathes what they do and believes it his duty. The pirates understand and also complain that they cannot seem to make money. Because Frederic’s obligation is to the pirates until noon, he tells them why: Because they are all orphans, the pirates will not rob another orphan; and since all their potential victims are aware of this, they all claim to be orphans!

Mabel enters and begs Frederic not to go back to the pirates, but bound by duty, he leaves. The police ready their attack on the pirates, while the pirates creep in to take revenge on the Major-General.

Because Frederic has spent his entire life with the pirates, he has never seen another woman; thus he thinks he may want to take Ruth with him as his wife. He asks Ruth if she is beautiful, and she responds that she is. Frederic, a very trusting young man, says that he believes Ruth and he will not let her age come between them.

The pirates defeat the police. However, when the police sergeant demands that the pirates yield in the queen’s name, they surrender and swear their allegiance to the queen. The tables are turned— and the police take the pirates prisoner. Ruth discloses that the pirates are all actually noblemen. Because the pirates have never really hurt anyone, they are soon forgiven. Frederic and Mabel are reunited, ex-pirates marry the sisters, and everyone lives happily ever after.

At this point, however, Frederic hears a chorus of women in the vicinity. He sees a group of beautiful young women, realizes he was misled by Ruth, and sends her away. Frederic informs 32

RAGTIME The Story of the Play Sarah, a Black washerwoman, falls for the popular ragtime pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. In the Lower East Side are Latvian-Jewish immigrants Tateh and his young daughter. All hope to be part of the promised American Dream. Father, who owns a fireworks factory, prepares to travel on a year-long expedition to the North Pole and leaves everything in the capable hands of Mother. Soon after he departs, Mother is shocked to discover a Black newborn baby in her garden. Younger Brother and Grandfather call for the police who find Sarah, the mother, in a nearby house. Mother immediately takes responsibility for mother and child—they are welcomed into her home. Coalhouse Walker is determined to woo Sarah back when he hears of her whereabouts. He purchases a new Model T to find and impress her. Coalhouse arrives at Mother’s house and learns he has a baby boy. Sarah refuses to see Coalhouse, so

and Tateh flees with his daughter on a train to Philadelphia. While they travel, Tateh creates a flipbook to calm his daughter, and the train conductor sees it. Intrigued, he wants to buy the book, and Tateh sells it for a dollar. He quickly realizes this may be his route out of poverty.

Meanwhile, Tateh is full of hope as he sets up his artist stand to support him and his daughter. Tateh’s dreams of a better life turn to dust as they barely survive in the atrocious immigrant tenements. While Harlem and New Rochelle collide in Mother’s house, Tateh and his daughter leave the city to go to Lawrence, Massachusetts to work in a textile factory. The working conditions there (and all over the country) are appalling, so activist Emma Goldman takes to the streets to rally for better conditions. Younger Brother attends her rally in Union Square and joins the cause. In Massachusetts, the textile factory workers go out on strike, which turns into a riot,

Back in New York, Coalhouse and Sarah are accosted by the racist Willie Conklin and the Emerald Isle fire squad. Acting out of bigotry, they viciously destroy Coalhouse’s Model T. Coalhouse demands restitution but is rebuffed at every turn. When Sarah advocates for Coalhouse’s cause, she is killed by the police. Heartbroken and grief-stricken, Coalhouse vows he will get justice. Coalhouse gains many supporters, including Younger Brother. Ultimately, Coalhouse loses his fight for equity and urges his supporters to tell his story. The age of ragtime ends, and the USA is ushered into an uncertain future.

CYMBELINE The Story of the Play evil stepmother wants her to marry Cloton, the Queen’s son from her first marriage. The two lovers are secretly married. Enraged, the king banishes Posthumus, who retreats to Rome. The Queen begins to plot Imogen’s death. In Rome, Posthumus meets crafty Iachimo, who claims that there are no virtuous women. Posthumus, knowing Imogen, disagrees. The two men wager: if Iachimo can seduce Imogen, he will win Posthumus’s ring. Iachimo travels to England and sees Imogen’s purity. So, he devises a trick: he hides in a chest which he asked Imogen to store in her bedroom. That night, after Imogen is asleep, Iachimo steals out of the chest, takes careful notes of all he sees, and steals the bracelet Posthumus gave Imogen. With this evidence he convinces Posthumus of his wife’s infidelity.

Long, long ago in a Britain still ripe with magic: Imogen, the king’s only child, is in love with Posthumus, a poor but worthy gentleman. Her

Caesar his enemy and leading the nation to war. The Queen launches her plot to kill Imogen, enlisting Posthumus’s faithful servant, Pisanio. Despairing, Posthumus also orders Pisanio to kill Imogen. The good Pisanio refuses both of these orders. Pisano persuades Imogen to leave the court to escape the hatred of the queen and her amorous son Cloten. Disguised as “Fidele,” Imogen travels to Wales, where she meets Belarius, a banished noble. Belarius is raising two boys who are actually Cymbeline’s sons, stolen from their nursery twenty years before. Cloten, disguised in Posthumus’s clothing, pursues Imogen. In a deadly encounter with Belarius and the boys, he is decapitated. Imogen accidently drinks poison, believing it to be medicine. The brothers are horrified to find beloved “Fidele” apparently dead. Tenderly, they lay her next to Cloten’s body. Imogen soon wakes, having only taken a sleeping potion. Seeing the headless body in her husband’s clothes, she’s convinced of Posthumus’s death. She meets Caius Lucius, the Roman captain, and she takes service with him as a page.

Cymbeline is preparing for war with Rome. Iachimo is fighting for the Romans. Posthumus, the brothers, and Belarius join the British forces. In battle Belarius and the boys rescue Cymbeline from the Romans and capture the Roman ambassador and his page. Posthumus, in despair over Imogen’s supposed death, disguises himself as a Roman prisoner of war to be put to death. In prison he is visited by the spirits of his parents, who give him strength for the road ahead. The war won, the happy ending begins. The Queen confesses her treachery shortly before her timely death. “Fidele” forces Iachimo to confess his trickery to Posthumus. Imogen then reveals her identity to her surprised husband, who is released by the king. Belarius reveals the existence of the two princes to Cymbeline. Imogen rejoices to have found her brothers. The Britons make peace with Rome, ensuring that Britain will “be fortunate and flourish in peace and plenty.”

INTIMATE APPAREL The Story of the Play Buren, which amuses the two women. Sharing dreams, Mayme admits to aspiring to be a concert pianist playing the world. Esther reveals her dream to open a beauty shop for Black women and that she has been stashing money in her crazy quilt to make her dream a reality. She shares her most recent letter from George, and Mayme helps her write a response. Back home, Mrs. Dickson brings another letter from George. She is afraid he is taking advantage of Esther and rips up the letter. Esther’s anger at Mrs. Dickson’s action shows how her feelings for George have grown strong. She goes again to Mr. Marks, and while they admire colorful silks, they talk intimately. She gently touches his collar without him noticing. It is obvious there is an unspoken attraction between them.

It is 1905 and Esther, an African-American seamstress who specializes in creating women’s intimate apparel, works at her sewing machine in Mrs. Dickson’s New York City boarding house. After eighteen years and twenty-two other boarders who have gotten married, Esther has given up on being a bride herself. Mrs. Dickson gives Esther a letter from George, who is working on the Panama Canal.

George writes and asks Esther to marry him. Despite Esther’s excitement, Mayme and Mrs. Dickson both disapprove of her marrying someone she doesn’t know. George arrives in New York, they are joyfully married, move in together, and she gives him a special hand-made smoking jacket. George struggles to find work and begs Esther for money to start a business. She refuses at first, but eventually gives George all the money she has been saving, thinking he’ll start a business. Instead, he gambles it away. His behavior makes Esther suspect that he is not the person from his letters.

Esther visits Mrs. Van Buren, a wealthy White woman, who hopes a provocative corset made by Esther will attract her wandering husband’s attention. As they talk, Esther mentions the letter from George, but says she can’t respond because she is illiterate. Mrs. Van Buren excitedly helps her draft a reply.

All her relationships are impacted. Esther leaves Mr. Marks with an awkward, unresolved silence between them. She and Mrs. Van Buren fight and Esther says they can no longer be friends. She also discovers that George has been unfaithful and gave away the smoking jacket she made for him.

Esther goes to Mr. Marks’s fabric shop, where he sells her a beautiful silk. There is a strong connection between the two of them, but due to his Jewish faith, he is not permitted to touch a woman who is not his wife or a relative.

Grief-stricken and frustrated, Esther leaves George and moves back into Mrs. Dickson’s boarding house. She is heartbroken, but resilient, buoyed by her dreams of the future.

Esther takes a new corset to Mayme, a chanteuse and courtesan, who has become a friend. The corset is twin to the one she made for Mrs. Van

In each period of costume history, fashionable women have had their bosoms rise and fall along with their waistlines, but in the nineteenth century the waist circumference was constrained to the point of ill health and all for the sake of fashion. Men also wore corsets in the late nineteenth century during the time of the most extreme “tight-lacing.” One account from a London boarding school claimed it was the custom for the students’ waists to be reduced one inch per month until they were considered small enough. EXPERIENCE seventeen-year-old student asserted that her waist measured only thirteen inches and noted that one of her peers had an easier time since her mother had corseted her from the age of eight! In response to the excessive tight-lacing, the Gibson Girl created by Charles Dana Gibson in 1898, became the very symbol for the modern American middle-class girl who went to work and was meant to be natural and athletic; however, that hourglass shape could not be achieved without corsetry. Corset making became a huge cottage industry for women who could buy their own Singer sewing machine with regular payments while creating garments to make a living. Corsetry was a lucrative profession because the construction was extremely precise, and the right corset could be either tolerable or torture. SUMA is located on the northwest corner of the Beverley Center for the Arts, just steps from the Festival theatres. For more information on SUMA, visit www.suu.edu/suma. Words Cubed Discover a new play with Words Cubed (formerly New American Playwrights Project).
