Our Stages. Your Stories.

T

he 2018 season of the Utah Shakespeare Festival is packed with stories of characters grappling with what it means to be part of a diverse world. Whether it is Iago insidiously promoting differences and intolerance in Othello or Huck Finn learning in Big River that all human beings are valuable and should be treated fairly and equally, whether it is the characters of The Merchant of Venice testing “the quality of mercy” or those of Henry VI Part One possibly destroying their country over a changing concept of nationalism—all explore the power of our common humanity. Our eight plays this year tell stories from the time of ancient Greece to Elizabethan England, from seventeenth century France to 1980s Georgia. They include a parade of hilarious, evil, wise, loving, hateful, and searching characters—a reflection of us all. We hope you will join with them and with us as our phenomenal artists bring your stories to our stages. We’ll save you a seat.

THE STORY OF THE PLAY

single, modern day storyteller takes the stage—possibly Homer, possibly one of the many bards who followed in his footsteps. Aided by his Muse and his memory of centuries of war, he retells Homer’s classic tale of the Trojan War, specifically the famous story of the great fighters Achilles and Hector. As he shares his tale with a modern audience, his references with wars

throughout the ages collide with the ancient story of Greeks and Trojans. As a traveling storyteller, he uses poetry, music, humor, and poignant accounts of war to share the experience from the perspective of a fighting Greek soldier and of a poet, a tale he is feels fated (unfortunately) to tell throughout time. 10

BIG RIVER THE STORY OF THE PLAY

T

the town believes Jim “killed” Huck because he ran away the same night as Huck “died,” and so they quickly load a raft and escape down the river. Soon two desperate men who have recently broken out of jail intrude upon the raft. The King and the Duke are conmen who tell Huck and Jim they are a preacher and an actor. The men come up with the idea of putting on a show in a town they are passing to drum up money from the locals. Jim is left chained to the raft as the men and Huck go into town. The silly shenanigans pay off, and they make some money that they use to celebrate and purchase new clothes. At the next town on the river, the men and Huck waste no time in staging another elaborate hoax. This time it involves a mourning family, a significant inheritance, a shooting, and even Huck’s old friend, Tom Sawyer. What happens next will determine the future and freedom of both Huck and Jim, on their adventure down the Big River.

his adaptation of Mark Twain’s literary classic takes us down the mighty Mississippi River as the wild child Huckleberry Finn and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, search for freedom. Once a homeless boy, Huck lives in the small town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, with Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, two spinster sisters who took him in. They are trying to teach him the only way to heaven is by reading the Bible. He wants nothing to do with education and religion and would rather leave town to go West, taking with him the $6,000 that he and his friend Tom Sawyer each have from finding stolen gold on a previous adventure. Trouble arises when Huck’s vagabond, alcoholic father, comes after the money, and Huck fakes his own death to escape to Jackson’s Island. Here he runs into Jim, a runaway slave belonging to Miss Watson. Jim admits to running away to avoid being sold again and to look for his family. Huck promises to help him, even though he could get into trouble. Huck hears a rumor that

The problem is he is pathologically shy and is terrified at the prospect of having to converse with strangers for three days. Froggy must leave, but, in an attempt to help his shy friend, he tells Betty, the owner of the lodge, that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and neither speaks nor understands English. Thus, conversations at the lodge carry on around Charlie much as if he weren’t there at all. For example, Catherine Simms informs her fiancé, the Reverend David Marshall Lee, that she’s pregnant. Owen Musser, county property inspector has a “private” conversation with the Reverend David. In the process, Charlie overhears a plot to undermine the value of the lodge through condemnation so that David can buy it at a bargain

indeed smart enough to receive his part of the inheritance, much to the dismay of David, who decides a hasty marriage to Catherine might be in his best interest after all. Charlie agrees to teach a bit of his “native tongue,” and has a good deal of fun at Owen and David’s expense. As Act One concludes, the power has been cut off and the lodge is in virtual isolation and darkness as everyone turns to Charlie for a solution. As promised, the Klan appears, torches blazing; but Charlie and Ellard are able to trick them and expose David for what he really is. Froggy returns, ready for the “vacation” and Charlie’s masquerade to end. But, Charlie is having too much fun in his new life and decides to stay on with his friends at the lodge.

HENRY VI PART ONE THE STORY OF THE PLAY

H

enry V’s reign has ended, and his funeral is attended by many nobles who honor the great king. His young son Henry VI is crowned king of England, and word arrives of trouble in France. The Dauphin Charles has been crowned as the French king and several towns once won by Henry V are now lost. In addition, the English hero Talbot has been taken prisoner. British noblemen rise to action while Talbot’s forces, exhausted and starving, beat the French at Orléans. Joan la Pucelle ( Joan of Arc) tells Charles that she has seen visions from God and can lead the troops. She brings military strength to the French army at Orléans and defeats Talbot who has been released in exchange for a captured French lord. She spares Talbot’s life during the fighting, and he contrives a sneak attack and retakes the city. In England, Gloucester (who is Henry VI’s protector) and his rival Winchester quarrel and encourage their followers to attack each other in the streets. Richard Plantagenet (later York) and Somerset (of Lancaster) are also rivals, and their followers declare their allegiance by wearing white or red roses. Warwick predicts their argument will lead to the deaths of thousands. Richard Plantagenet learns he has a claim to the English throne from his dying, imprisoned uncle Mortimer. Plantagenet requests and is granted both his father’s and uncle’s titles, renaming him the Duke of York. Henry VI is crowned in Paris, and orders York and Somerset to fight the French instead of each other. As they squabble, French forces kill Talbot and his son. The English army captures and executes Joan. Suffolk captures Margaret, daughter of the king of Naples, and falls in love with her, but because he is already married, he successfully woos her on behalf of Henry, selfishly designing a way to stay close to her. England and France make a peace agreement, and Suffolk hopes that the new Queen Margaret will come to great power by dominating King Henry VI, thereby achieving greatness for himself.

eeding 3,000 ducats to woo the heiress Portia, Bassanio, a penniless Venetian gentleman, borrows the money from his wealthy merchant friend Antonio. However, Antonio’s money is currently tied up in shipping, and he must ask the Jewish moneylender Shylock for a loan. Shylock agrees to the loan interest free— but he suggests that Antonio sign a bond that will permit Shylock to slice a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body if the loan is not repaid within three months. Certain that at least one of his merchant vessels will return before that time, Antonio signs the bond and turns the needed funds over to Bassanio, who leaves at once for Belmont with his friend Gratiano. Bassanio soon learns that the matter of wooing Portia is more complicated than he knew. Her deceased father has decreed that all suitors must choose from a gold, a silver, or a lead casket (chest). If the suitor unlocks the casket containing Portia’s portrait, she becomes his bride. Bassanio chooses correctly, so Portia gives him a ring as a token of her love which he vows to wear forever. Likewise, Nerissa, her maid, gives a ring to Gratiano, who has successfully wooed her. Soon after, Lorenzo, another of Bassanio’s friends, arrives with Jessica, Shylock’s daughter, who has deserted her father and eloped with Lorenzo, a Christian. Word comes that none of Antonio’s ships has arrived at port, and Shylock appeals to the Venetian courts for the fulfillment of their bond. Bassanio and Gratiano return immediately to Venice to help Antonio. Portia devises a plan of her own, and, disguising herself as a young lawyer with Nerissa as her clerk, arrives at court before the sentence has been exacted. Portia attempts multiple times to convince Shylock to drop his bond, all to no avail, until she finds a detail in the law that leaves him with little choice. Therefore, Shylock relents, but Portia quickly points out that the law may hold Shylock accountable for plotting against a Venetian citizen. The court spares Shylock’s life but rules that he be stripped of his wealth, paying half to the court and the other half to Antonio. Antonio adds that his portion and any fortune left at Shylock’s death be given to his daughter Jessica and her husband

of venice OF THE PLAY Lorenzo, and he calls for Shylock to become a Christian. Still disguised, Portia and Nerissa test the strength of their bonds by making a request of their unsuspecting husbands, Bassanio and Gratiano, that as a token of gratitude for their legal services, they reward them with the rings given to them earlier. The two men agree, and the two women hurry back to Belmont where they await the return of their husbands. When the husbands arrive, the two young wives demand proof that the rings were not given to rivals, but soon relent as they relate the story of the disguises and the trial and return the rings to their Bassanio and Gratiano. Word soon comes that Antonio’s rich cargo vessels have arrived, and all, at least on the surface, seems restored in Venice.

decide to teach him a lesson, with Mistress Quickly acting as go-between. Meanwhile, their husbands have learned of Falstaff ’s plans through two of his disaffected followers. The jealous Ford decides to put his wife’s honor to the test and arranges to be introduced to Falstaff in disguise as “Mr. Brook.” Mistress Quickly hurries to tell Falstaff that Mistress Ford wants him to visit her while her husband is away. Ford, disguised as “Mr. Brook,” offers Falstaff money to court his wife as a test of her virtue. Falstaff boasts that he has already arranged a tryst with her, and Ford leaves, enraged at his wife’s apparent infidelity. Mistress Page meets Ford, who is on his way to catch his wife and Falstaff together, and she rushes to warn Mistress Ford. Cleverly, the wives contrive to involve Ford’s arrival into their plot against Falstaff. When the rotund rogue arrives, Mistress Page cries out in alarm that Ford is coming. Falstaff hides in a hamper of dirty laundry,

ir John Falstaff is up to his usual tricks. Justice Shallow and his cousin, Slender, complain to Sir Hugh Evans that Falstaff has swindled them. Evans suggests they forget their grievances and that Slender court Anne Page, master Page’s daughter. The unrepentant Falstaff arrives on the scene, admitting to the swindle. Later, he decides to generate some income for himself. Convinced that both women are enamored of him, he writes identical love letters to Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, intending to gain access to their husbands’ wealth. Elsewhere in Windsor, Mistress Quickly tells her employer, Dr. Caius, about Slender’s plan to woo Anne Page. Caius, also in love with the lass, writes a letter challenging Evans to a duel, which leads to some hilarious “sparring.” Soon, Master Fenton enters and reveals himself to be a third suitor for the hand of Anne Page. Shortly, Falstaff ’s amorous letters are delivered, and Mistress Page and Mistress Ford

which is soon dumped into the River Thames. Meanwhile, Anne Page, who loves Fenton, must submit to the clumsy wooing of Slender, whom her father supports, and of Caius, whom her mother encourages. Falstaff boasts to “Mr. Brook” about his narrow escape in the laundry basket, and about his upcoming second rendezvous with Mistress Ford. He leaves for the Ford home with “Mr. Brook” close behind. This time, the women disguise Falstaff as the fat witch of Brainford, whom they know Ford despises. Ford cudgels the witch from his home, and the wives decide it’s time to let their husbands in on the joke. Mistress Ford and Mistress Page plan further fun at Falstaff ’s expense. They will lure him to a haunted park where townspeople disguised as fairies, will frighten him. Later, in the park, Mr. Page advises Slender to elope with Anne, whom he thinks will be disguised as a fairy dressed in white. Mistress Page informs Caius that Anne will be dressed in green. Everyone else is ready, and they take their places. Falstaff arrives, fully dressed as Herne the Hunter. The fairies appear, the women flee, and Falstaff is pinched and taunted unmercifully. Meanwhile, Slender and Caius snatch their green and white “Annes” as Fenton escapes with the real Mistress Anne. The Fords and Pages reveal their joke to Falstaff, but their joy is short lived as Slender and Caius appear, each of whom has discovered that his beloved has turned out to be a boy in a fairy costume. Anne and Fenton, now married, return, and their parents accept the situation philosophically. Mistress Page invites the entire company to her home for a laugh over all the complications that have finally been resolved.

OTHELLO THE STORY OF THE PLAY

I

ago, a Venetian soldier and ensign, is passed over for promotion by Othello, a Moorish nobleman who has reached the pinnacle of his career: he is general of the Venetian army and has secretly married Desdemona, daughter of an important statesman in Venice. Partly to be avenged for this slight and partly because of his dark nature, Iago has determined to destroy Othello’s happiness. His first attempt in this villainy is in awakening Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, and telling him of his daughter’s marriage to the black Moor. Enraged, Brabantio appeals to the duke of Venice to punish Othello but gives up in his efforts when he realizes that Desdemona truly loves her new husband. Iago, however, is not so easily defeated; and he soon enlists the help of Roderigo, a rejected suitor of Desdemona, in his future attempts to ruin Othello. When Othello is sent from Venice to defend Cyprus from the Turks, Desdemona sails to join him, in the safekeeping of Iago and his wife, Emilia. A storm disperses the Turkish fleet, ending the threat to Cyprus, and Othello is quickly reunited with Desdemona on the island. Now, Iago begins to scheme in earnest. He gets Cassio, whom Othello promoted ahead of Iago, drunk while on duty, thereby prompting Othello to dismiss the dishonored Cassio from his service and make Iago his lieutenant. Then Iago goads Othello into believing that Desdemona is Cassio’s lover. Othello soon becomes obsessively jealous and willing to believe anything he is told about his innocent wife. Iago’s final “proof ” of Desdemona’s

infidelity revolves around the loss of a special handkerchief Othello had given her during their courtship. Emilia finds the handkerchief, giving it to Iago who then convinces Othello that Desdemona has given it to Cassio as a love token. When Desdemona cannot produce the handkerchief, Othello is certain she has been unfaithful and swears an oath of vengeance on his wife and Cassio. That evening, Othello orders Desdemona to await him alone in bed. As she prepares for sleep and fearing Othello’s dark mood, she sings “A Willow Song,” a wistful song taught to her about a maid who was forsaken by her lover. In Desdemona’s bedchamber, Othello gazes down at the innocent beauty of his sleeping wife. She awakens, and despite her pleas for life, Othello smothers her with a pillow. A horrified Emilia enters, and Othello justifies himself, citing the handkerchief as proof. Recognizing the handkerchief as the one she stole for her husband, she is stunned and reveals Iago’s guilt. Iago enters the scene, kills Emilia, is arrested, and is almost killed by Othello, who now is horrified as he understands the truth. Despite demands for an explanation of his treachery, Iago remains silent and is condemned to a tortuous death. Before Othello can be led away to face his justice, he begs his listeners to speak of him “as one that lov’d not wisely but too well.” He then draws a concealed weapon, stabs himself, and kisses Desdemona as he dies.

THE LIAR

AN ILIAD

September 14 – October 13

July 12 – October 13

By David Ives Adapted from Le Menteur by Pierre Corneille Directed by Brad Carroll The charming Dorante cannot tell the truth, and his manservant Cliton cannot tell a lie. From this simple premise springs one of the western world’s greatest comedies, a spirited seventeenth century French farce brilliantly adapted for today, complete with mistaken lovers, suspicious fathers, sparking romance, frothy comedy, and an abundance of breathtakingly intricate “alternative facts.”

By Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare Based on Homer’s The Iliad Translated by Robert Fagles Directed by Jason Spelbring “Every time I sing this song, I hope it’s the last time.” So says the Poet in this modern retelling of an ancient classic. The Trojan War is over, and the Poet saw it all—unquenchable rage and endless battles. The telling sometimes overwhelms him, but he must sing. He must tell his sad tale of humanity’s unshakeable and perpetual attraction to violence, destruction, and chaos.

THE FESTIVAL

M

ake the most of your Festival Experience by taking part in some or all of our interactive experiences surrounding the plays. All seminars, play orientations, and displays are free; Backstage Tours, Repertory Magic, and Words3 require tickets which can be purchased at the Ticket Office. Please check our calendar at bard.org for exact dates, times, and locations. Play Seminars Share your views with others about Festival plays, their interpretation, and their subtle nuances in these engaging discussions led by theatre experts each morning. Play seminars take place the morning after the previous day’s plays. This event is made possible through a grant from Utah Humanities. Production Seminars You can learn more about the details of backstage by attending one of our production seminars, which rotate through the days of the week. Props Seminars explore how hundreds of props and special effects help create the Festival magic you see on stage. Properties Director Benjamin Hohman conducts the seminars. Costume Seminars allow you to see our amazing costumes up close and learn from costume designers and technicians how the costumes are designed, constructed, and cared for. Costume Director Jeffrey Lieder hosts this seminar. Sponsored by The Guild of the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Actor Seminars let you hear from the actors themselves and learn what it’s like to be onstage at the Festival, giving you a chance to get to know some of the actors and ask them questions. Sponsored by Bryan and Diana Watabe. Play Orientations Prepare for the play with these short and informative orientations conducted by theatre experts—and heighten your experience by learning about the play before you see it, as well as asking questions about the Festival and Cedar City. Sponsored by The J.R. and Lorna S. Broadbent Family.

On Display The Randall L. Jones Theatre Lobby: “Through My Eyes—Mary Jabens Contemporary Landscape Artist,” an exhibition of landscape paintings by 56

EXPERIENCE Cedar City artist Mary Jabens, is featured in the Randall L. Jones Theatre throughout the 2018 season. Speaking of her work, Jabens said: “Living in southern Utah provides a lifetime of subjects that are irresistible to my desire to paint. The paintings I love the most ‘choose me.’ Whether it’s a color, shape, value, or subject—my inner muse stops me and says ‘paint this.’ My goal is to communicate with the viewer the joy I see around me.” The Southern Utah Museum of Art: SUMA is featuring at least two exhibits during the Festival season. “Across the Universe Divide” is an exhibit featuring more than fifty bronze, steel, and wood sculptures by distinguished sculptor James Surls. This work has all been created after 2006, with some as recent as 2018. The exhibit will be open July 7 to September 29. Also featured will be eight significant works by Jimmie F. Jones from the museum’s permanent collection. Jones donated his final paintings, his house, and the copyright to his work to Southern Utah University to help fund the construction of the Southern Utah Museum of Art. The exhibit will be open throughout the summer and until the end of the year. SUMA is located on the northwest corner of the Beverley Center for the Arts, just steps away from the Festival theatres. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The museum is closed during all SUU holidays.

Backstage Tours Backstage Tours provide the perfect opportunity to peek behind the scenery and into the Festival’s various production areas and theatres to see how all the enchantment comes together. Repertory Magic One of the most magical (and difficult) aspects of repertory theatre is the twice-a-day scene change. Lighting, scenery, props, costume, and sound technicians must hurry to change everything from the matinee to the evening show. It is a fascinating and well-choreographed process. Now, you can witness the scene change and ask questions as it happens! Tickets are $8 at the Ticket Office. Sponsored by The S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation and The Ray, Quinney and Nebeker Foundation.

THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE (CONTINUED)

The infamous couple serve as the villains in Shakespeare’s work, but tell a new story in this tale of good intentions and family dysfunction. With ominous hints at the familiar story to come, Gertrude and Claudius is a play that shakes up what you thought you knew about Elsinore.

Words3 Discover a new play with Words3. Nationally-recognized playwrights spend a week at the Festival, and Festival actors and artists present their plays as staged readings, followed by instructive discussions between the playwright, actors, and audience. Plays begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Eileen and Allen Anes Studio Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the Ticket Office. Important Note: The plays in this series are written for contemporary adult audiences and may contain themes and language not appropriate for children and that some may find offensive.

Shakespeare’s Worst! A Play on a Play

By Mike Reiss with Nick Newlin Directed by Quinn Mattfeld August 29 and 31 An original and hilarious retelling of a Shakespare classic, this new play is set in a small town theatre where a group of actors are performing The Two Gentlemen of Verona. But one of the cast members is unhappy: his career is going nowhere, he’s tired of the show, and he wants out. Penned by Mike Reiss, writer and producer for the hit comedy The Simpsons, this show promises to shine a new, and hilarious, light on Shakespeare.

Gertrude and Claudius

Adapted by Mark St. Germain From the novel by John Updike Directed by Jim Helsinger August 24, 25, 30, September 1 Serving as a prequel to Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius brings a new point of view to Shakespeare’s classic tale of guilt and revenge.

Oh, Will... you join us? ~ Curtain Call Luncheons - Enjoy lunch and Q&A with actors from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on select Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the SUU Alumni House. Tickets available at the Festival Ticket Office, online and at the door. ~ Adopt-an-Actor - Show the cast you care through “adoption!” You will receive a lanyard with your actor’s photo and information to proudly display your support of USF. ~ Christmas in July - An arts and crafts fair on the lawn adjacent to the SUU auditorium. July 27 & 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 pm.
