Welcome to the Utah Shakespeare Festival! Welcome to the sixty-first season of the Utah Shakespeare Festival. It promises to be a season of outstanding storytelling, emotional drama, hearty laughter, and healing introspection. You are invited to discover new tales and revisit old ones as we share eight incredible productions and three lively editions of The Greenshow, plus orientations, seminars, classes, and more. This season Derek Charles Livingston will serve as our artistic director, and we are sure that you will enjoy the vision, heart, storytelling, and ambition this season offers. For the first time in our history, we are producing a musical in the outdoor Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre: Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd. Also for the first time, our talented directing staff includes four female directors as well as four African-American directors. Our Shakespeare stories all take place in a wide variety of places and times: All’s Well That Ends Well in 1940s France and Italy, King Lear in the traditional Shakespearean setting, and The Tempest on an uninhabited island in the 1990s. Add to these the hilarious whodunnit Clue, the beloved The Sound of Music, the backstage satire Trouble in Mind, and the one-man-show Thurgood, and you have a season of magic for everyone! We are so happy you have joined us at the Utah Shakespeare Festival! Frank Mack Executive Producer
Derek Charles Livingston Interim Artistic Director

FESTIVAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion The Utah Shakespeare Festival is committed to the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do. This requires our devotion to erase all traces of systemic racism, within our organization and everywhere else we can affect it.
Indigenous Land Acknowledgement The Utah Shakespeare Festival has both historical and contemporary relationships with Indigenous peoples. Given that Southern Utah has always been a gathering place for Indigenous peoples, we acknowledge that this Too’veep (land) is the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Nung’wu (Southern Paiutes). The Utah Shakespeare Festival recognizes the enduring relationship between many Indigenous peoples and their traditional homelands. We are grateful for the territory upon which we gather today; we respect Utah’s Indigenous peoples, the original stewards of this land; and we value our relationship with the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah. To this end, we acknowledge and honor the Tribe for its resilience, its deep connection to this land, and express our appreciation for the opportunity to live, learn, and enrich the lives of all those who gather on their homelands.
Shakespeare wrote that “we know what we are, but not what we may be.” We resolve that the Festival may be fully antiracist, embracing all people who have been under-represented on our stages and that we will be a theatre that depicts, investigates, and celebrates the lives and humanity of people who have suffered discrimination and persecution, in order to play our part in relieving the oppression that, sadly, continues to this day while also honoring the vast tapestry of humanity.

ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL The Story of the Play After Bertram leaves, Helen finally confesses her love to the countess, who encourages her in this love and in succeeding on her terms. Thus, Helen follows Bertram to the French court, with plans to cure the king and win Bertram’s hand. When Helen arrives at the court, the king is skeptical of her skill, despite knowing of her father’s reputation. She pledges her life to help him and makes a bargain that if she is successful, she be allowed to choose her own husband from the eligible nobles of the court. Helen’s cure, taken from her father’s old books, is successful, and when given her choice, she chooses Bertram. Bertram rejects being matched against his will to the lower-born Helen and to the interruption of the freedom he enjoys in his young life. Nevertheless, the king, as Bertram’s guardian and sovereign insists on the match, and the marriage is immediately performed.
Bertram, the count of Rossillion, is leaving his mother, the countess of Rossillion, to go with his companion Paroles to the court of France. He is under the guardianship of the king of France, who has for some time been seriously ill. Also saying goodbye to Bertram is Helen, the daughter of the late, famed physician to the Rossillion family. She has been raised as a daughter under the protection of Bertram’s mother, the countess. Helen is in love with Bertram, but realizes that her chances of gaining his love are slim, as she was born into a lower class than he.
But Bertram remains determined to live by his own will. He runs away to the wars in Florence, Italy and sends Helen a letter telling her that he will only accept her as his wife if she completes the impossible

tasks of gaining his ancestral ring from his finger and bearing a child begotten by him. Helen returns to Rossillion, then sets off to Italy disguised as a pilgrim. In Florence, she hears stories of the valor of Bertram and also of the licentious way in which Paroles leads his companion astray. A widow invites Helen to lodge at her house, and tells of how Bertram has solicited her own daughter, Diana. Helen engages the widow in a plan for Diana to welcome Bertram’s advances, gain his ancestral ring, and lead him to her bed, where Helen will secretly take Diana’s place in order to fulfill her husband’s conditions and also to save his virtue by tricking him into avoiding an illicit affair. Helen adds that Diana must also tell Bertram that while in bed, she will give him a ring in return – the ring that Helen received from the King as a gift for her marriage to Bertram. The widow and Diana agree to the plan. Rings are exchanged, and a child is conceived with Helen in Diana’s place. Following, Bertram returns to the camp, where he is convinced by the Dumaine siblings that they should capture and trick his braggart-soldier friend, Paroles, to challenge his courage and impart a lesson and warning against future meddling and shenanigans. Helen, Diana, and the widow return to France and spread the rumor that Helen has died on her pilgrimage. Bertram soon hears the false news and believes he can now safely return to France, which he does. Upon hearing of Helen’s death, the king and Lafeu arrange for Bertram to be married to Lafeu’s daughter. As a sign of his commitment to do so, Bertram gives Lafeu the ring that was given to him, while in bed with Helen, whom he believed to be Diana. The king and others immediately recognize it as the gift given to Helen by the king.

Diana and the widow arrive at court wearing Bertram’s ancestral ring, and accuse him of bedding then leaving her. Bertram claims that he is innocent, and the king orders Diana to prison. Before she is taken away, she presents Helen as the witness to her claim. Helen announces the fulfillment of both of Bertram’s conditions for choosing her. She is wearing Bertram’s ancestral ring and is pregnant with his child. Bertram begs pardon and agrees to accept Helen as his wife. In acknowledgement of Diana’s help in this matter, the king offers her a large dowry and a suitable husband from court. The king and countess are pleased with the outcome, and All’s Well That Ends Well . . . for the moment.

The Story of the Play: Sweeney Todd sea during his escape by a virtuous but naive sailor, Anthony Hope, Sweeney plans to reunite with his wife, Lucy, and daughter, Johanna. However, he first encounters Mrs. Lovett, a denizen of Fleet Street, whose failing meat pie shop is situated below the barbershop that once belonged to Sweeney. She reveals to him the woeful fate of Lucy, who tragically took her own life, and the plight of Johanna, now the judge’s ward. Sweeney’s deepened desire for vengeance leads him to re-open his barbershop. After irksome delays and, finally, a thwarted attempt on the judge’s life, he goes mad, vowing murderous revenge on not only the judge but on all mankind. Mrs. Lovett, long enamored with Sweeney, devises a wicked plan for disposing of the resulting bodies; and her meat pie business begins to boom. But, alas, Sweeney’s thirst for blood and Lovett’s own brand of avarice soon lead to deception, heartbreak, and carnage beyond their comprehension.
In mid-nineteenth century London, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns home after fifteen years in an Australian penal colony to seek vengeance against the lecherous judge and the sycophantic beadle who sent him away. Rescued at 20

KING LEAR The Story of the Play the natural bond of daughter to father dictates. Furious, Lear disinherits her, gives all his lands and responsibilities to Goneril and Regan, and makes plans to live, with his one hundred knights in tow, a month at a time with the two eldest daughters. The loyal earl of Kent tries to intercede and is banished. Dowerless Cordelia marries the king of France and flees to his country. At the same time, the earl of Gloucester is deceived by the false sincerity of his illegitimate and wicked son, Edmund, who has forged a letter attempting to deprive his brother, Edgar, of his birthright by convincing their father that Edgar is going to murder him. Kent, instead of going into exile, returns in disguise to become a servant of his old master Lear and arrives at Goneril’s castle as she is beginning to shame her father. Cursing his eldest daughter, King Lear departs immediately for Regan’s, sending the disguised Kent ahead.
Lear, king of Britain, divides his kingdom among his three daughters, making his gifts dependent upon each daughter’s declaration of love for him. The two oldest, Goneril and Regan, gush sweet adjectives, but young Cordelia, in her integrity, refuses to allow so intimate a truth to be flaunted for public hearing, and says she loves him neither more nor less than

KING LEAR In the open country Edgar finds his blind father and, without revealing himself, becomes his guide. Cordelia, who has returned with the armies of France to fight her sisters, finds her mad father and cares for him. Meanwhile, the duke of Albany denounces his wife, Goneril, for her cruelty; the two older sisters fall prey to Edmund’s seduction; and Edmund becomes commander-in-chief of the English forces.
minor offense and to humiliate Lear, they put the disguised Kent into the stocks. There he is found by the king, who is accompanied by his witty and wise fool. Regan refuses to take in her father until he has made apology to her sister. Goneril arrives, and Lear perceives that the daughters are in league, and he sets out into the night. On the stormy heath, Lear, with his fool, hurls defiance at the elements and, joined by Kent, who has now been released from the stocks, seeks refuge in a hovel which is already occupied by noble Edgar, disguised as mad Tom O’Bedlam.
Albany joins armies with Edmund only to protect Britain, and in battle the French are defeated. Lear and Cordelia become Edmund’s prisoners, and he sends them to prison to be executed. Jealous of her love for Edmund, Goneril poisons Regan and then stabs herself when her own crimes are found out. Albany arrests Edmund for treason, and in formal combat Edgar mortally wounds his brother Edmund. Before he dies, he tries to do good, “despite his nature,” by countermanding his order to hang Cordelia and Lear, but it is too late. Lear enters with her body and dies himself. Gloucester, recognizing the virtuous Edgar, dies of joy and grief. Edgar and Albany are left to restore the kingdom.
Just as Kent has calmed the king (who is showing signs of going mad), Gloucester arrives with word that the daughters are plotting against the king’s life, and that he must be taken to friends at Dover. Meanwhile, the duplicitous Edmund has furnished evidence that Gloucester has been assisting Cordelia’s invasion from France. As a result, Cornwall captures Gloucester and tortures him by plucking out his eyes. In the process Cornwall is mortally wounded by Gloucester’s faithful servant.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC The Story of the Play von Trapp. Her charisma and love of music liven up the strict home, and the children come to love and adore her. Captain von Trapp feels differently at first, but soon Maria captures his heart too. Maria struggles with her own feelings for the captain and flees back to the abbey to seek refuge from them. Mother Abbess helps Maria to see that this holy love is also God’s will, and Maria realizes convent life may not be her path after all. She accepts this new path and returns to the von Trapp home, and Maria and Georg are soon married. Following their honeymoon, they return home to find that their beloved Austria has been invaded by the Nazis who demand that the captain immediately serve in their navy. Refusing to concede, the family and their closest friends create a plan to escape through the mountains and into the safety of Switzerland.
When a young novitiate named Maria proves too spirited for convent life in 1930s Austria, she is sent by her abbess to serve as a governess to seven children of a widowed naval officer, Captain Georg

TROUBLE IN MIND The Story of the Play New York City, 1957, and it is the first day of rehearsal for a promising new play: Chaos in Belleville. Wiletta, an African-American actress who has spent her life playing “character parts,” is thrilled to finally be cast in a lead role. However, trouble erupts when the director Al Manners insists everyone act with integrity. That leaves Wiletta only two choices: go along to get along, or commit career suicide by giving Manners the one thing he is not ready for: the truth. The stakes are high, but this satire of backstage drama and racial tropes will make you both laugh and stop to think.

The Story of the Play The classic board game comes to life—and death! An anonymous host invites six guests to an unusual dinner party. Each is given an alias: Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, and Miss Scarlet. Though they are discouraged from revealing any personal information, they soon discover each has fallen victim to the same blackmailer, who happens to be their host for the evening. Each is gifted a weapon—and a choice: pay their extortionist double or kill the innocent butler. What follows is a madcap evening full of murder, mystery, and mayhem where everyone is a suspect.

THE
As the play opens, a tempest-tossed ship is wrecked upon the shores of an enchanted isle whereon dwell Prospero and her daughter, Miranda, alone save for Caliban, a prisoner and original resident of the island whom Prospero has enslaved, and Ariel, a spirit of the winds and Prospero’s servant. After the ship is split apart on the rocks and as the tempest begins to subside, Prospero tells her daughter of her past life: Formerly duchess of Milan, Prospero allowed her affairs of state to lapse in order that she could study magic. Eventually her reign was usurped by her ambitious sister, Antonio, and Alonso, the king of Naples. The conspirators then set Prospero and Miranda adrift in a “rotten carcass of a boat,” where they would have perished except for Gonzalo, who provisioned their craft with enough food and water for them to reach the island. During the twelve years of their exile, Prospero has perfected her magical arts, gained control of the various spirits and creatures that inhabit the island, and educated Miranda.

Knowing through her magic that her ancient enemies are in the wrecked vessel, Prospero brings the voyagers safely ashore and scatters them in groups about the island. Ariel, at Prospero’s bidding, leads Ferdinand, the heartbroken son of the king of Naples, to the cave of Prospero—and Miranda, who does not remember ever having seen any other man than Caliban, immediately is smitten with the handsome prince. TEMPEST had hoped the two would fall in love, pretends to frown upon him, subdues him with magic arts, and sets him to work hauling logs. On another part of the island, Alonso, his brother Sebastian, Antonio, and others wander sadly, convinced that the young Prince Ferdinand is dead. All but Sebastian and Antonio are lulled to sleep by Ariel, but these two remain awake to plot the death of the sleeping king and their taking over of his kingdom. They might have succeeded had not the watchful Ariel awakened the intended victim just in time. On a third isolated part of the island, Trinculo, the king’s jester, is reeling drunk. He encounters Caliban, and they are soon joined by the butler, Stephano, who so delights Caliban with “moonliquor” that Caliban swears to follow him forever. The three then make their own drunken plot to break free, through force, of their various masters, but Ariel, who has heard every word, lures them astray with magical music. Meanwhile Miranda and Ferdinand have exchanged vows of love, and Prospero, who is now convinced of their true love, blesses their engagement. While the lovers are conversing, Prospero and Ariel mock the king’s court with a lavish banquet which turns horrible and vanishes as soon as they try to eat. They then rebuke them for their crimes against “good Prospero . . . and her innocent child.” Finally, after Miranda and Ferdinand are treated to a prenuptial masque enacted by the spirits of Iris, Ceres, Juno, and their nymphs, Prospero decides that all have suffered enough and that it is time to forgive for injuries of the past. Spellbound by Ariel’s magic, everyone, for the first time, is brought before Prospero, where she reveals herself as the wronged duchess of Milan. Prospero first brings in Prince Ferdinand, supposed dead, and announces his engagement to Miranda. She then frees her faithful servant, Ariel, and returns the island to Caliban. The crew of the ship, which is magically afloat again, arrives to take all back to Milan, and Prospero renounces her magical powers, with a last order to Ariel to command “calm seas and auspicious gales” for the voyage ahead.

The Story of the Play Thurgood is an acclaimed one-man play about the life of Thurgood Marshall, an American lawyer and civil rights activist who served as associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from October 1967 until October 1991. He was the Court’s first African-American justice, and the plot of the play is his fictional lecture at his alma mater, Howard University Law School. It is a frank, extraordinary look at his journey to influence justice, racial relations, and the law in America.

THE FESTIVAL Make the most of your Festival Experience by taking part in some or all of our interactive experiences surrounding the plays. Play seminars, play orientations, production seminars, and displays are free; Repertory Magic and Words Cubed require tickets, which can be purchased at the Ticket Office. For details, prices, dates, and locations, visit our website at www.bard.org. Repertory Magic One of the most magical (and difficult) aspects of repertory theatre is the twice-a-day changeover. Lighting, scenery, props, costume, and sound technicians must hurry to change everything from the matinee show to the evening show. It is a fascinating and well-choreographed process. You can witness the scene change and ask questions as it is happening.

The playwrights are given an opportunity to work with professional actors and directors as they revise their work. Then each play is presented as a staged reading in front of an audience, followed by an informative discussion among playwrights, actors, and audience.
