Artistic Directors David Ivers and Brian Vaughn, and the entire Festival staff (pictured here), are thrilled to see this project now underway. Completion is estimated for the 2016 season. We welcome you to join us in this exciting process. Through the dust and digging, the building and bulldozing, our stimulating work on our stages continues. We are proud to present eight distinctive productions, three family-friendly Greenshows, seminars, tours, Repertory Magic, and educational programs for all ages. So, pardon our dust and dig in to all we have to offer on your visit with us!

n March 27, 2014, the Utah Shakespeare Festival achieved another milestone in its already illustrious fifty-three year history: the groundbreaking for the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts. This complex will serve as the home to the new Englestad Theatre, the Eileen and Allen Anes Studio Theatre, artistic/production facilities, rehearsal/ education/storage spaces and administrative offices, as well as the Southern Utah Museum of Art. This project, the largest in the history of the Festival and Southern Utah University, has long been a dream of Festival founder Fred C. Adams. He, along with R. Scott Phillips, Festival executive director,

IN MEMORIAM

into the world renowned Adams Shakespearean Theatre. The dedication of this remarkable building in 1977 was a highlight in the long list of Cook’s contributions, only to be equaled by his sensitive oversight of the design and construction of the Randall L. Jones Theatre in 1989. Cook’s achievements in, and contributions to, the world of theatre have been many and varied. He has been president of or served on the board of every major theatrical association in the United States. He was the cofounder (with Sidney Berger) of the Shakespeare Theatre Association. An abundance of awards and accolades have accompanied these affiliations, but Cook, ever humble, was always quick to equally note the accomplishments of others. So, we bid a fond farewell, good friend. “The heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes” (Julius Caesar, 2. 2.30).

ouglas N. Cook, a driving force for excellence at the Utah Shakespeare Festival for thirty-seven years, passed away on May 31. He was a longtime leader, visionary, and friend. “He will be sorely missed,” said Fred. C. Adams, Festival founder. “We have lost a giant.” Cook joined the Festival in 1964, and, under his guidance, the props and scenery departments blossomed. As a talented and enthusiastic scenic designer, he instantly began to shape the artistic dream and creative integrity of the young company. His influence since can be charted using the titles he capably wore: scenic designer, design director, associate producer, and producing artistic director. With the continued growth of the Festival, Cook quickly became more and more integral to its day-to-day operations and its larger vision for the future. In 1970, he supplied the initial research and sketches for a long dreamed-about permanent theatre. These sketches would ultimately evolve

HENRY IV

NEVADA CONSERVATORY THEATRE

T

aking up where Shakespeare’s Richard II leaves off, Henry IV Part One, finds Bolingbroke, now King Henry IV, tenuously ruling England, as a man who usurped the throne. He is a ruler beset with troubles: attacks by Scottish forces and the defeat and capture of loyal Mortimer by the Scottish warrior, Glendower. Thus, he laments that he is unable to fulfill his earlier vow to lead a crusade to the Holy Land to do penance for his part in the death of Richard II. There is one piece of good news: English forces, led by young Hotspur have defeated the Scots at Holmedon and have captured the renowned Earl of Douglas. Yet Hotspur’s show of valor especially gives the harassed king reason to lament the dereliction of his own son and heir, Prince Hal, a mirror image of Hotspur, who has avoided the court and public responsibility and spends his time in the company of the elderly, high-spirited Sir John Falstaff, as well as the lowly gang of hangers-on at the Boar’s Head Tavern in Eastcheap. Hal joins Poins in a plan to dupe Falstaff and his friends, contriving to have Falstaff finally exposed as a coward and liar. Alone, Prince Hal soliloquizes, letting the audience know that, although he now chooses to enjoy himself in riotous company, he has no illusions about the character of his associates and will redeem himself publicly at the proper time. Meanwhile, back at court, King Henry confronts the Percy family (Hotspur, his father Northumberland, and his uncle Worcester) over their not turning Scottish prisoners of war over to the crown. The Percys, deeply resenting the fact that the man they helped to the throne now intends to enforce absolute obedience, begin to plot their revolt. Joining with the Scots, they plan war against King Henry IV. At the Boar’s Inn, the duping of Falstaff is winding up riotously. However, as usual, Falstaff not only survives the ordeal of being derided as a coward and liar but emerges (as he usually does) triumphant. But the riotous fun is soon interrupted by a messenger from the king summoning Prince Hal to court to help counter the uprising of the Percys. As the rebels are planning their campaign against the royal forces, King Henry rebukes his son for his wild ways, comparing him unfavorably

PART ONE to the valiant Hotspur. But when Hal pledges to redeem his tarnished reputation “on Percy’s head,” the king puts him in command of part of the royal forces, even allowing Falstaff to go to the wars in charge of a company of foot soldiers. Partly because of new life breathed into the royal forces by Prince Hal’s sudden change of heart and spirit, the northern rebellion goes badly, Glendower and Northumberland desert the cause, and King Henry offers complete pardon to all if the rebels will disband. However, Worcester, the rebel messenger, does not tell the others about the king’s offer, convinced that under any circumstances the older leaders of the revolt will be the objects of Henry’s wrath. In the hot engagement which follows, Prince Hal leads the successful battle and kills his spirited rival, Hotspur, even though Falstaff takes the credit. Worcester is captured and executed and the rebel forces are utterly defeated and scattered. @utahshakespeare, #USF2014, #henry4

MEASURE FOR MEASURE led away by his jailors. The duke, disguised still as a friar, has been eavesdropping on the conversation and now tells Isabella that she can save her brother without compromising herself if she will follow his plan: Angelo, he confides, has a skeleton in his own closet in the person of Mariana, whom Angelo had long ago contracted to marry but had jilted because her dowry was too small. Inasmuch as their betrothal would have been considered a verbal contract, legally and morally binding in the future, Isabella is persuaded to agree to a tryst at which Mariana, without Angelo’s knowledge, can be substituted in his bed to consummate their old marriage vows. Isabella and Mariana carry out the plan, and Mariana shares Angelo’s bed, with Angelo thinking he is with Isabella. Angelo, however, still breaks his promise and demands to have Claudio’s head. The friar/duke, however, acts quickly and has the head from another corpse substituted for Claudio’s, convincing both Angelo and Isabella that Claudio is dead. The next day, the duke returns to the city as himself and meets Angelo and other officials outside the gates, where Isabella accuses Angelo of seduction and murder. The duke leaves and returns again disguised as the friar, acting as a witness for the women and revealing the story and himself. He then sentences Angelo to death, but first orders a real friar to marry him to Mariana. After the ceremony he yields to the pleadings of Mariana and Isabella and spares Angelo’s life. He next has Claudio brought forth and orders him to wed Juliet and make up to her for what she has suffered. The duke himself then sues for Isabella’s hand, saying “what’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine.”

The Story of the Play

easure for Measure is set in Vienna where vice currently runs rampant and the laws have been allowed to sleep for many years. Duke Vincentio is setting out on mysterious business and leaving the cares of state to his trusted minister Angelo, with instructions to enforce discipline as he sees fit. Angelo’s first action is to revive the obsolete law condemning seducers to death. He then plans to make an example of the young Claudio and has him arrested for having sex with his betrothed, Juliet. As he is being taken to prison, Claudio begs his friend Lucio to get help from his sister, Isabella, who, upon hearing the news, hastens to her brother. Meanwhile, Duke Vincentio is going about the city disguised as a friar, watching the way his deputy, Angelo, rules and hoping that he can bring the city, which under his own too-kindly rule has been given over to crime, back to the ways of virtue. Isabella obtains an audience with Angelo and pleads for her brother’s life. At first her efforts are to no avail, but later, as her beauty rouses a passion in Angelo, he asks for a second interview at which he suggests she might purchase her brother’s life with her sexual favors. Shocked, she denies Angelo and rushes away. In the meantime, Duke Vincentio has visited Claudio in his cell and learned of his true love for Juliet and of their plans to marry as soon as a dowry can be arranged. Hastening to Claudio, Isabella tells her brother of Angelo’s lustful and illegal offer. Terrified of death, Claudio begs his sister to do what Angelo has requested. Isabella makes it clear to him that, although she would pray for him dead, she will not sin for him living. A disheartened Claudio is then

By J. R. Sullivan

enry Dashwood dies and, in accord with British custom and law, leaves his substantial estate and wealth to the oldest son of his first marriage, John Dashwood. This leaves his second wife, Margaret Dashwood, and her daughters, Elinor and Marianne, without a home and little income. Though John has pledged to his dying father to provide for his stepmother and stepsisters, he sidesteps his promise to do so. Mrs. Dashwood then accepts an offer from a distant cousin, Sir John Middleton, who has heard of her situation: with her daughters she moves to a small house in Barton Park, located in Devonshire. Nineteen-year-old Elinor is unhappy about leaving their Norland estate home because she has met and fallen in love with Edward Ferrars, the brother-in-law of her half-brother, John. In their new home they encounter new acquaintances, including the retired officer (and bachelor) Colonel Brandon, and the magnetic and impetuous John Willoughby. Seventeen-year-old Marianne is utterly smitten with Willoughby, and it seems that he is equally passionate about her. Willoughby and Marianne become very attached, and it appears that their whirlwind romance will quickly result in an engagement; but Willoughby suddenly announces he must depart Devonshire for London with little explanation as to why. Marianne is inconsolable. Meanwhile Lucy and Anne Steele, two distant cousins of Lady Middleton’s mother, Mrs. Jennings, arrive at Barton Park as guests. Lucy is especially eager to meet Elinor and after ingratiating herself confides that she has been secretly engaged to Edward Ferrars for almost four years. Deeply shocked and distressed, Elinor nonetheless keeps her feelings to herself and—when pressed—agrees to keep Lucy’s secret until Miss Steele is able to meet and win over Edward’s imperious mother, Mrs. Ferrars. Mrs. Jennings organizes a winter stay at her London home for Elinor and Marianne. Marianne continues to pine for Willoughby and hopes to meet with him in London. Colonel Brandon visits and tells Elinor that the talk in London society is of an engagement between Marianne and Willoughby. It is very clear by now that Colonel Brandon harbors his own feelings of deep attachment to Marianne. At a subsequent London party Marianne sees

SENSIBILITY Willoughby, but he coolly rebuffs Marianne and rejoins his own friends, including Miss Sophia Grey. The next day a letter from Willoughby arrives for Marianne, and in it he disowns ever having had feelings for her. Shortly after, it is revealed that Willoughby is to be married soon to Miss Grey. It is then that Colonel Brandon informs Elinor of Willoughby’s history of debauchery, including with Brandon’s own adopted ward, Eliza. Not long after this, Lucy’s sister Anne reveals news of Lucy’s secret engagement to Edward Ferrars. Outraged, Mrs. Ferrars disinherits Edward, and promises the family fortune will go to Edward’s brother Robert instead. The Dashwood sisters leave London to visit with family friends in Somerset, and it is there that the still grieving Marianne develops a severe cold that quickly worsens and threatens her life. Colonel Brandon, who had escorted the Dashwood sisters to Somerset, departs so that he might bring Mrs. Dashwood from Devonshire to Somerset. After Brandon leaves, Willoughby arrives seeking forgiveness from Marianne. Elinor denies him that privilege, and Willoughby makes an explanation of his actions to her. Elinor takes a level of pity on Willoughby, and he departs into the night. Marianne’s fever breaks, and when Mrs. Dashwood and Colonel Brandon arrive the next morning they are relieved to find Marianne beginning to recover. Elinor later tells Marianne of Willoughby’s visit, and Marianne fully realizes that she could never have found happiness with him. As preparations are made for a return to Barton Park, Marianne begins to appreciate Colonel Brandon and finds herself increasingly attached to him. Brandon and Marianne soon become engaged to marry. Shortly after the return to Barton, the Dashwoods learn from a servant that Lucy Steele has married Mr. Ferrars. Unsurprised at the news, they are nonetheless saddened to hear it. Edward arrives soon after and corrects a misconception: Lucy Steele has instead married the recipient of the family fortune, the supercilious younger brother, Robert. Edward confesses that he has loved Elinor and only Elinor ever since their first meeting at Norland and now he is finally free to propose to her. Elinor happily accepts and the story ends on a note of exhilarated joy. @utahshakespeare, #USF2014, #sense&sensibility

doesn’t believe in grief; he spends his time drinking with Olivia’s clown, Feste, and his dupe, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a wealthy but foolish knight. Because Malvolio is so arrogant, Maria, Olivia’s chamber woman, plots with Sir Toby, Aguecheek, and Feste to get even. They do this by means of a forged letter supposedly from Olivia, duping Malvolio into thinking Olivia loves him. Olivia, instead, thinks him mad, and Sir Toby and Maria have the ill-used Malvolio committed to a dark room. Meanwhile, Viola’s twin brother, Sebastian, unaware that Viola is still alive, arrives in Ilyria with a sea captain, Antonio, who is an outlawed man in Ilyria. Antonio lends his purse to Sebastian and parts. Seeking more “sport,” Sir Toby presses Aguecheek and Cesario/Viola into a duel. Antonio rushes to rescue the youth, whom he believes is his friend, Sebastian, and is arrested by the duke’s men and met by Cesario/Viola with a denial that he/she ever saw him or his purse. Now Aguecheek rushes to complete the duel with Cesario/Viola but encounters Viola’s twin brother instead who quickly wounds the knight. Olivia interferes and leads Sebastian to a priest and (thinking he is Cesario) marries the surprised young man. Antonio is brought before the duke and creates some confusion by relating his adventures with Cesario/Viola, who he still thinks is Sebastian. Olivia adds to the confusion by entering and claiming Cesario/Viola as her husband. Sir Andrew and Sir Toby in the meantime have had another encounter with Sebastian; they enter wounded and blame their hurts upon Cesario/Viola. Everything is finally made clear when Sebastian himself appears and the company sees Viola and Sebastian, twins, side by side. Viola promises to assume her maiden attire to prove her identity as Sebastian’s sister. Orsino, remembering Viola’s many expressions of affection, is content to abandon his hopeless love for Olivia and marry Viola. Sir Toby marries Maria for her wit; but Malvolio, who has been “notoriously abused,” casts a shadow on the happiness by cursing the others and angrily leaving. @utahshakespeare, #USF2014, #twelfthnight

iola finds herself stranded in Illyria and assumes her twin brother is dead. She disguises herself as a man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, who is in love with Olivia and who sends Viola/Cesario to woo Lady Olivia in his behalf. Orsino does not know that Viola has fallen in love with him. Olivia is indulging in a seven-year season of mourning for a dead brother and father and is refusing to accept the advances of any man. Her sorrow is not so profound, however, as to keep her from falling in love with the disguised Viola. She is so in love, in fact, that she later sends Cesario/Viola a ring and invitation to return and then professes her love for “him.” Of Olivia’s household, only her steward, the melancholy Malvolio, finds a morbid pleasure in the atmosphere of mourning which Olivia has decreed. Her uncle, Sir Toby Belch (who lives in her house),

Seminars

njoy the entire Festival Experience! The Utah Shakespeare Festival encourages interaction and participation from our guests. The Greenshow, all seminars, play orientations, and displays are free; Backstage Tours and Repertory Magic require tickets, which can be purchased at the Ticket Office.

Literary Seminars offer the opportunity for guests to discuss the plays—and hear the experiences of others—in freewheeling discussions led by theatre experts: Nancy Melich, an active member of the American Theatre Critics Association, Dr. Don Weingust, director of the Southern Utah University Center for Shakespeare Studies, and Dr. Ace Pilkington of Dixie State University. Tuesdays through Sundays, 9 and 10 a.m., Seminar Grove. Prop Seminars allow guests to learn some of the secrets behind the props used in Festival productions. Properties Director Benjamin Hohman conducts the seminars and explains how props are designed, acquired, and built. Mondays and Thursdays, 11 a.m., Randall L. Jones Theatre.

The Greenshow

The Greenshow is the perfect way to spend thirty minutes before the show. Each summer evening on the lovely green surrounding the Adams Theatre, this pre-show entertainment features spirited song and dance. Add Elizabethan sweets and other refreshments, and you’ll have a fun-filled frolic to prepare you for the main stage performance that follows. Mondays through Saturdays, 7:10 p.m.

Props Seminars are sponsored by The S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney Foundation and The Ray, Quinney and Nebeker Foundation.

The Greenshow is sponsored by Wells Fargo, The Marriner S. Eccles Foundation, and in honor of the late Morton J. Weinberg.

Costume Seminars allow guests to take a close-up look at the Festival’s renowned costumes. Costume Director Jeffrey Lieder hosts this seminar and explains how costumes are designed, constructed, and maintained. Tuesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m., Randall L. Jones Theatre.

Additionally, there is also a new section dedicated to tracking our progress in our “Complete the Canon” initiative. Auditorium Theatre Lobby.

Repertory Magic

One of the most magical (and difficult) aspects of repertory theatre is the twice-a-day scene change. Lighting, scenery, props, costume, and sound technicians must rapidly change everything from the matinee to the evening show. It is a fascinating and well-choreographed process. Now, you can witness the scene change and ask questions as it happens! Tickets are required and are for sale at the Ticket Office. Monday and Thursday afternoons immediately following the Randall Matinee performance. $8, Randall L. Jones Theatre.

THE NEW AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS PROJECT

T

Sponsored by the John M. and Rosalind J. Horrigan Foundation

he New American Playwrights Project (NAPP) has established itself as a major component of the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s summer season. Its mission is to focus on new works that explore characters and ideas of the American Western experience, spirit, and heritage, as well as “classic” themes with literary, historical, or artistic significance. During an intensive workshop period, playwrights have the opportunity to revise their new scripts with the assistance of a director and members of the Festival acting company. At the end of this period, Festival guests are invited to attend a staged reading of the new plays and afterwards to discuss the work they have just seen with the playwright, director, and actors. All play readings are in the Auditorium Theatre. Admission is $10 per play. Important Note: The plays in this series are written for contemporary adult audiences and may contain themes and language not appropriate for children and that some may find offensive.

Bird Johnson, Jackie Kennedy, Nellie Connally, and Marina Oswald. These women are not only wives, but mothers, and each has a unique perspective and reaction to the tragedy that occurred in Dealey Plaza.

Breakout

By Dan Borengasser
 Directed by Quinn Mattfeld
August 15, 16, and 28 • 10 a.m. “Roach” Rhinowsky and Russell Sloan share a jail cell, but they don’t agree on much. Then the prison adopts a theatre program as a form of rehabilitation, and the two concoct a shared goal. They decide the play the inmates will produce, Hamlet, will be the perfect distraction for a breakout. However the play soon worms into their psyches, and they both discover that a 400-year-old play can still pack quite a wallop.

Hamlet’s Shakespeare

By Mary Jane Schaefer
 Directed by Henry Woronicz
August 22, 23, 29 • 10 a.m. Hamlet’s Shakespeare has as its central focus the death of Hamnet Shakespeare, Will’s only son, dead at the age of eleven. The play explores the significance of his death, in an imagined story of how Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, the best way the playwright could find to mourn his son.
