WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL Welcome to the 14th Annual Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival! The Festival is produced by Jazz Arts of the MountainWest, nonprofit 501(c) (3), and directed by Four Floors Productions, Inc. It gives us great pleasure to bring this extraordinary event to our great city. In these challenging economic times, please let our remarkable sponsors know that you appreciate their willingness to support this worthy community project. Shop in their stores. Utilize their services. Show them that their goodness is noticed and approved. The wonderful foundations that help us keep live music in front of the public and who support music education for all ages need to hear from you. Lastly, if you are not a supporter of our great causes, please consider doing so. The many artists in our community as well as parents of young children need your help for a brighter future for the arts. As many Festivals around the US have had to discontinue operations, we are proud of the many people who have continued to support us. We especially want to thank our new sponsor, Macy’s. Also, returning for their second year, Alex and Ani. Please take the time to visit their stores and let them know you appreciate their participation in the Festival. It is very important to acknowledge Zoo, Arts & Parks, (ZAP). Their willingness to help nonprofits succeed in their mission, not only in funding, but in other categories as well, is a magnificent community endeavor. Thank you, ZAP! Also, Mayor Dolan of Sandy City, thank you for your willingness to support our Festival. I have already received great comments from Sandy residents appreciating your support. Mearle Marsh, you have been terrific as well! Louie Strike, President of JAM, wishes to extend his appreciation to the great JAM Board of Directors. The planning and execution of an event like this Festival calls for selfless people who are devoted to the mission of JAM. Our Board continues to care about the quality of the event and what it offers to our communities. Our fabulous clinics are made possible in part by a generous grant in memory of Barney & Sally Rosenblatt from Stacy, Jeff, Brock Rosenblatt and other anonymous donors. Our Festival is all about music – the live performance of it and a never-ending effort to encourage music education to all ages. Special thanks goes to The School of Music, University of Utah for fourteen years of partnership in making the clinics an important part of the Festival. In behalf of JAM, I thank all of the kind volunteers and staff who willingly sacrifice their time in the belief that the Jazz Festival is important to our great City. I also thank Westminster College for the use of their facilities to enable the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra to conduct rehearsals and lab band activities. Please support our food and other vendors, along with our generous sponsors as you enjoy this year’s Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival. We feel the Festival is “STILL…THE BEST ENTERTAINMENT VALUE IN TOWN!” Thank you, Jerry Floor Festival Director

Motown–Friday, Gallivan Stage, 10:00 PM / Ray Charles–Saturday, Gallivan Stage, 7:30 PM

Ellis Hall, accomplished and prolific performer, multiinstrumentalist and vocalist, is entertainment’s bestkept secret. In a career spanning over four decades, Hall has solidified a reputation for soul-searing Rhythm & Blues, and has electrified audiences throughout the world. A master of the guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, and drums, Hall has also made a mark as an incredible songwriter, arranger, and producer. Hall is well known for his work with the magnetic soul sensations Tower of Power, where he was lead singer and keyboardist in the mid-1980s. In 1986 Ellis was the vocalist on the song ‘What Does It Take To Win Your Love’, a track on Kenny G’s 5 time platinum debut album “Duo Tones.” He has also performed with a multitude of musical icons, including Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Earth Wind & Fire, Natalie Cole, George Duke, Michael McDonald, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Brett Michaels, Bobby Womack, Billy Preston, James Taylor, John Mayer and his musical Mentor, Ray Charles. In 2001 Hall met the legendary musical icon Ray Charles, who was so taken with Hall’s performance power that he took the artist under his wing. The following year, Charles signed Hall as the only other artist on his label Crossover Records. Following this major honor, Hall went on to work with Charles on the astounding album “Straight Ahead,” featuring an array of guest artists and garnering a top single “Gotta Get the Money” which landed at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Since 2006, Ellis Hall has entertained thousands of music lovers performing with various symphonies, including the Nashville, Tucson, Honolulu, Long Beach, Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, San Diego, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Edmonton Orchestras. Ellis has worked with some of the world’s most well-known conductors, including Marvin Hamlisch in Pittsburgh, Keith Lockhart in Boston, Jeff Tyzik in Rochester, and Steve Reineke of the New York Philharmonic. Following a performance in 2010, it was Tyzik who first referred to Hall as the “Ambassador of Soul”, after Ellis had jokingly commented, “I spent a lot of time working on my ambassadorship.” The moniker stuck. Since 2010, Hall has been invited back to his hometown on multiple occasions to perform with the Boston Pops Orchestra. In 2013, he headlined at the Boston Pops 40th Fireworks Spectacular celebration. He also brought in the New Year by headlining at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC with the National Symphony Orchestra. Ellis Hall’s passion for music has also led him to share his powerful vocals over the years on a variety of other projects to include Beetlejuice for, The Lion King 2, Chicken Run, Shrek 2, Highlander II: The Quickening, Bruce Almighty, Beneath the Darkness, and Invincible and has acted in movies as well. Hall has played for several notable luminary’s including the late Nelson Mandela. He performed music from a scene of the film Chicago with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gear, Renee Zellweger, and Queen Latifah live at the 75th Academy Awards and also at Helen Keller’s funeral and was specifically requested by former President William Jefferson Clinton to perform at his first inauguration ceremony. Ellis Hall has truly made his mark in music and entertainment. His joy for life and music can be summed up in a word he considers his motto: “Chakalaka!” The SLC Jazz Festival is proud to have Ellis back with us again!

He is also featured on a new CD by Steve Lawrence entitled “Steve Lawrence Sings Sinatra”. He has appeared with such jazz artists as Steve Gadd, Joe Labarbara, Bobby Shew, the Condoli Brothers, Scott Hamilton, Terry Gibbs, Sonny Stitt, Jack Sheldon, Carl Fontana, Mark Murphy and many others. He has extensive experience as conductor of all size orchestras, including symphony orchestras, and has been musical director for the stage musical “Too Short to be a Rockette.” He can be heard on several recordings with Frank Sinatra, Pia Zadora, Sylvia Syms, and others as well as his own jazz piano trio album and his latest CD with his jazz organ trio. The group, “The Jazz Organization,” was recorded live at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. His latest composition with lyricist Joe Cocuzzo entitled “The Singer’’, was recorded by Rosemary Clooney, and Marlene Verplank. In 2005, Mr. Falcone had his first book published by Hal Leonard publishing co. entitled “Frankly-Just Between Us”. The book tells of his many experiences with Frank Sinatra and many of the other artists with whom he has worked.

songwriters and arrangers, all of whom come from varied personal and musical backgrounds. Some are college educated jazz musicians, some are street trained funk players, but they all have these things in common: an intense groove, a perpetual creative spark, and the unbridled joy of making music together as a cohesive unit. This melting pot of talent led to two thrilling live recordings; “Live” in 2005, and “Let The Healing Begin” in 2007, and two remarkably unique and satisfying studio recordings; “When The Curtain Goes Up” in 2009, and “The Answer,” released earlier this year. Enjoy the recordings, but to really appreciate Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns, you must see and hear them live in concert—there is no experience like it. Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns are one of the most exciting, versatile, and creative bands on the scene today. Formed in Las Vegas in 1999 by vocalist/ guitarist Jerry Lopez, SF&TFCH are a collection of the finest musicians in the city—musicians who spend much of their time backing artists such as Celine Dion and Donny & Marie Osmond, or performing in shows such as Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages. Then on Monday nights at 10:30, they get together on stage at the Palms casino in Las Vegas to bring their special brand of “healing” to their audience, themselves, and to the music scene in general. The “healing” comes from soulful, passionate performances and old school camaraderie that is rarely seen in today’s troubled world. While definitely old school in their approach to live performances, SF&TFCH are very original and new in their musical conception. Clearly influenced by horn bands of the past like Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Chicago and others, this band has broken down stylistic barriers that confined other bands, and refined a sound that has aspects of funk, jazz, Latin, pop, and rock, while ultimately sounding like no one but themselves. This is largely due to the unique makeup of the band: five distinct lead singers, a six piece horn section, an incredible rhythm section, and several different

It feels good to give back. And together with our generous customers and employees, Macy’s averages more than $1 million a week to initiatives important to you and your community – arts, education, the environment, HIV/AIDS, and women’s health and wellness. It adds up to $70 million* a year. It’s a good feeling we can all share, and to us, that’s the magic of giving.
