The Cat in the Hat

Thank you for celebrating seven years of professional children’s theatre with us. No seven year itch here! We’re still in love! In love with all the actors and the design teams that have put their heart and soul into bringing a favorite children’s book to life. We’re in love when we see children’s eyes light up and hear their contagious laughter during one of our performances. We’re in love when children enthusiastically raise their hands to connect with the actors and ask a question. We’re in love when we hear our young theatre goers say “Thank you, that was better than a movie.” We invite you to fall in love. Fall in love with your inner child—ignite your imagination as you enter the magical world of ART DOG. May your holidays be filled with wonder and awe, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

In The Room With

Penelope Caywood & her daughter Presley, SLAC'S Kid Connection

Penny: So, it’s time to introduce yourself to the kids and adults who are coming to see the show. Presley: Hi. I’m Presley Josephine Caywood and I am 8 years old. My mom is the director of the play you are going to see. ART DOG! I work on her shows, too. I film interviews with the actors called “A Cup of OJ wih PJ”. I really love acting myself. I guess it’s one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. Penny: Can you believe I’m directing another show at SLAC? I feel pretty lucky about it. Presley: I think it’s good because you like directing. And I think it’s awesome that you can do lots of different kinds of shows. I also know directing is very tiring, but it’s nice that you get to do something you love. Penny: What can you tell them about the book ART DOG? Presley: I really like the book. It’s pretty fun and I especially like all the colors that are splashed in between on all the pages. I think other people will really enjoy reading it. My favorite part of the story is when Art Dog gets trapped in jail … oh, and I like the way he gets thrown in jail, too. The book is very creative and a good choice to be recreated on stage. You might do things differently in the play. That’s cool, too, because then you can talk about what was the same or different after the show. Penny: Anything I should be thinking about as I work with the designers on this play? Like do you have suggestions for the costumes and set design?

12

Presley: Art Dog’s costume should have really big floppy ears so that he stands out from the others. I also think you will need to cover all your props with paint because he paints everywhere. Make the brushmobile out of styrofoam so that’s its easier to carry and it should have holes for his legs. It should be black with cool art splotches on it and his name “Art Dog” in white. Penny: Now that you’ve been in a few plays yourself, do you have any advice for the actors? Presley: When I visited your rehearsal the other day I noticed that they weren’t really projecting their voices. I think they need to be more expressive. Faces need to be big! It’s professional theatre! Are they just smiling? Or are they being super expressive? Also, your actors also shouldn’t change anything after you tell them what to do. They shouldn’t come up with stuff by themselves. Penny: You’re right. Actors with their own ideas could cause a lot of problems. Any final thoughts? Presley: Taking your kids to see live theatre at SLAC is an awesome experience. It might give them interesting ideas or it might even make them want to try acting someday. When they come I’m sure there will be stuff for older kids to enjoy, some grownup humor, and maybe even some jokes that just the little kids understand. It’s going to be fun for everyone.

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During ART DOG, we would like to welcome Assistant Stage Manager Danielle Quintana from Salt Lake Community College as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program. “The University Professional Theatre Program has been an incredibly rewarding experience. This program gives students the opportunity to take a break from our textbooks and get real-life experience working on a professional production. In college, I mainly studied the creative aspects of theater, such as costuming, stage make-up, writing, acting, and directing; so being an Assistant Stage Manager and Light Board Operator has really opened up my eyes to the backstage technical world of theatre and helped me hone my organizational and communication skills. I am so grateful to Salt Lake Acting Company and the cast and crew of ART DOG for giving me this opportunity to fully round out my theatre education!” - Danielle Quintana | Salt Lake Community College

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
