National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere SLAC is a proud member of the National New Play Network (NNPN), which is the country’s alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays. BLACKBERRY WINTER is receiving the largest ever NNPN Rolling World Premiere, and SLAC is very proud to be kicking things off! “Steve Yockey has become one of National New Play Network’s favorite playwrights as evidenced by the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of BLACKBERRY WINTER. With eight partnering theaters set to produce the play within the twelve months following its opening at SLAC, it has officially become the largest RWP in the history of the program, and, as it is Steve’s fourth play to receive one, he has become our most produced playwright. Its smart, honest, startlingly funny look at the life of someone caring for a loved one with a deteriorating memory so moved NNPN’s artistic leaders that the play was designated for a roll - created when three or more member theaters decide to work collaboratively with a playwright on separate and distinct productions of a new play almost immediately following its reading at the 2014 National Showcase of New Plays. We believe that this work epitomizes the Network’s dedication to the development, production and continued” Nan Barnett, Executive Director | NNPN “New Rep is thrilled to provide BLACKBERRY WINTER with its metro Boston rolling world premiere production. We love this play for all its potent passion, wit, and honesty. Steve Yockey is a phenomenal playwright and is the perfect example of how NNPN is shaping the course of how new plays are developed and then produced on the American stage. All best to our partners at SLAC!” Jim Petosa, Artistic Director | New Repertory Theatre, Watertown, MA “We are beyond thrilled that this play we dreamed up with Steve two years ago is having this massive Rolling World Premiere! Many thanks to Emory’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center for assisting us in the development of this work.” Ariel Fristoe, Co-Artistic Director | Out of Hand Theater, Atlanta, GA “’I’m a big fan of this play. The script is very smart and precise and the allegory scenes will be an exciting challenge.’ That was scenic designer Brad Steinmetz’s reaction after reading BLACKBERRY WINTER. Everyone at OCT shares Brad’s enthusiasm for Steve’s beautiful play. We are excited about how the play will continue to evolve through the Rolling World Premier and are eager to share it with our audiences next spring.” Craig Willis, Producing Artistic Director | Oregon Contemporary Theatre, Eugene, OR “Actor’s Express has a long relationship with Steve Yockey and we continue to be surprised and inspired by his limitless imagination and unique ability to tell powerful stories in unexpected ways. BLACKBERRY WINTER is extraordinarily powerful and deeply human. I can’t wait to partner with Out of Hand Theater to bring it to life during our shared leg of the NNPN Rolling World Premiere.” Freddie Ashley, Artistic Director | Actor’s Express, Atlanta, GA

How to Bake a Coconut Cake “Baking for me is about home and tradition and family. And a little bit about therapy. But mostly it’s about making something with care and attention and thought. And that something turns out to be a tangible (and edible) expression of love. Love that goes straight from my hands into the bodies of the people I bake for. The best food is food made with love.” -April Fossen Vivienne’s Cake Recipe 3/4 pound (3 sticks) unsalted butt, at room temperature 2 cups sugar 5 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vianilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons pure almond extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup milk 4 ounces sweetened shredded coconut Preheat the oven to 350 degrees; grease your three round 9-inch cake pans. Cream butter & sugar on medium-high speed for 3-5 minuets, until it’s light yellow and fluffy. Crack the eggs into a small bowl, with mixer on medium speed add eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla and almond extracts and mix well. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set the mixer to a low speed and alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk. Then fold in the four ounces of coconut with a rubber spatula. Pour the batter evenly into the three pans, and smooth the top with a knife. Bake in the center of the oven for 45 minutes, maybe a little more, just until the tops are browned. April’s Icing Recipe 1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 6 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp coconut extract 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk Cream butter on medium-high speed until soft. Gradually mix in powdered sugar on low speed. With mixer still on low speed, add coconut and vanilla extracts and milk, and mix until incorporated. Switch mixer to medium-high speed and beat until light and fluffy. A word of advice from our expert baker April Fossen: “So, here’s the thing about cake recipes, recipes that are formulated at sea level have to have some alterations in order to work at a high altitude (like we are). Here are the alterations I made.” -April Fossen Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes, just until tops are browned and cake tester comes out clean Reduce sugar by 2 tablespoons Increase flour by 3 tablespoons Reduce baking powder by 1/8 teaspoon Increase milk by 1 tablespoon

In The Shadows with Glenn and Linda

WHO’S WHO

“It’s been a real pleasure working on BLACKBERRY WINTER. Our job as puppeteers in this production is to be visual storytellers using shadow puppets. Our first challenge was to design the “look” of the puppets, to somehow link the elements of the story together into a coherent visual style. Once that was done we had to construct the puppets and background scenery and too make sure they functioned properly (puppets are always trying to do their own thing, like running and hiding. Damn sneaky puppets!) Then it’s on to rehearsal where we put it all together. Rehearsal with puppets takes quite a bit of time, not just for the puppeteers who have to coordination the movement of three to four people in a small space while chasing elusive disappearing puppets, but also for the actors as will who provide the text for the productions. It takes brave actors to work with puppets! When that all comes together, add lights and sound and it becomes magic. Now has anyone seen a small puppet anywhere?”

WHO’S WHO Green Room Gallery The SLAC Green Room Gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts What’s My Name?, an Art Access exhibit curated by Sue Martin, explores visual expression of dementia and memory loss by those who suffer from the disease and those who care for them. Further, it explores how creative expression stimulates memory, linking present and past, and how art making helps caregivers process the daily frustrations and fears that accompany their changing roles as their loved ones’ cognitive function slips away. Art Access is a local arts organization committed to providing equal opportunities to inclusive arts programming for Utahns with disabilities and those with limited access to the arts. A community-focused organization, Art Access strives to demonstrate that the arts are a universal vehicle for drawing out our similarities, celebrating our differences, and ultimately connecting us to each other. Through its philosophy of inclusion, Art Access serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. accessart.org

WHO’S WHOProfessional Theatre Program University SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During BLACKBERRY WINTER, we would like to welcome actor Kalika Rose, puppeteer Mary Helen Pitman, and sound operator Beret Brems from the University of Utah as well as puppeteer Connor Johnson from West High School as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program. I truly admire each of the individuals I am fortunate enough to work with and I know that the time I have to watch them and learn from them is invaluable. I hope that the experience of working with other professionals helps me to reach a higher level in my art and become a professional myself. – Kalika Rose | University of Utah I am excited to see what it is like to work with professional actors, directors, technicians, etc. and learn how to behave in such an environment. I’m glad to have been offered this experience so early on in my career, so I can apply what I learn in the company to my professional life in theatre sooner rather than later. – Mary Helen Pitman | University of Utah I think that being exposed to professional theatre while I’m still in Kakila Rose, Mary Helen Pitman and Conner Johnson school will help me prepare for what during rehearsal is out there beyond the university and beyond graduation. –Beret Brems | University of Utah Being a part of professional theatre is always a great opportunity to learn and grow in terms of acting and experience, I envision that this will lead to me being more comfortable and able in other professional shows. – Connor Johnson | West High School Sponsors: The John & Marcia Price Family Foundation, Terence K. Stephens, Roy Jespersen, Marian Jacobsen, Zelie Pforzheimer and Mark Family Foundation.

Join us for a FREE READING of a new play by Steve Yockey!

Monday, September 21 @ 7pm Sloane isn’t sure why exactly her husband Timothy brought home a probably dangerous drifter. It’s something about “doing a good deed.” Of course, it’s hard to think straight when her kleptomaniac neighbor keeps dropping by to chat and steal. And then things get violent. BLEEDING HEARTS is a dark farce about the disappearing middle class and the way people can slowly forget how to put themselves in each others’ shoes.

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
