Welcome Welcome to the second half of Salt Lake Acting Company’s 48th season! We’re so proud to present Bekah Brunstetter’s comedic drama, The Cake. Plays like The Cake do not come around often. For one, it examines both sides of a delicate issue in a refreshingly fair manner. In choosing material to be presented this season, my goal was to find uplifting works that would encourage empathy for the world around us. As productions of The Cake are mounted in major cities around the nation, SLAC is proud to produce the Utah premiere for our audiences--a full week before it opens for New York City audiences at Manhattan Theatre Club. While the major themes of marriage and religious freedom are thoroughly explored in tonight’s play, a supporting theme--the plight of the small business owner and how values affect commerce--is just as important. Locally-owned businesses are a vital part of any community and as we kick off 2019, we’d like to thank the businesses that help Salt Lake Acting Company care for its audience and artists all year long: •
Henrie’s Dry Cleaners: Serving Salt Lake City since 1958--and for good reason! A proud partner of ours for many, many years and counting.
•
Especially for You: An unparalleled downtown florist, specializing in the unique and non-traditional, making them a kindred spirit to SLAC.
•
Salt Lake Roasting Company: The ideal choice for coffee in Salt Lake City--or anywhere. Keeping our audiences happily caffeinated.
•
Red Rock Brewing Company: Nationally recognized as one of the most creative breweries in the United States for nearly 25 years.
•
We Olive & Wine Bar: A gorgeous bistro located in Trolley Square, providing oneof-a-kind dining experiences through California wines and olive oils.
•
Salt Lake Film Society: Our newest partner, but one that shares the oldest sensibility of bringing exciting art to its patrons.
Please consider patronizing these incredible businesses if you don’t already. Get your clothes cleaned, buy flowers for “your person,” get your coffee fix, grab a craft beer, enjoy some olive oil, see a film! Supporting these locally-owned businesses supports the community that you and SLAC call home. Wishing you and yours a loving and more understanding 2019. Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

IN THE ROOM We asked prominent members of Utah’s LGBTQ community to share their thoughts on marriage equality. Oh, so it says gay marriage is a sin in the bible? Wonderful, now show me where it says so in the Constitution. - Jim Dabakis, Private Citizen and SLAC Subscriber
As plaintiffs in the Kitchen Case, Laurie and I sought equal protection and status for our relationship. Marriage equality guaranteed under the law that, like any other married couple, we could protect each other. While the legal and financial benefits mattered, they paled in comparison to the almostsacred bond we felt when we exchanged our wedding vows. The simple words “I do” had never felt so powerful. - Kody Partridge and Laurie Wood, Forever SLAC Subscribers and Equality Activists
Growing up in apartheid South Africa where ultra conservative and oppressive laws were in place, I never in a million years would have believed that it would eventually have one of the world’s most liberal constitutions and would be the 5th country to legalize gay marriage. When I finally found the “one”, an Australian, same-sex marriage was still illegal in his country. By the time Australia finally came around, we had already tied the knot in Utah! In 2016, after being posted here for work, two very nervous non-US lads entered the Utah County Marriage Licenses office not knowing what to expect, and certainly not anticipating the joyous, wonderful clerk who gave us our license and who married us the very next day. Standing in that little office, surrounded by a group of dazed workmates who we dragged in as witnesses with 10 hours notice, was an unbelievably emotional and important moment, one no person – no matter color, creed, sexuality, or gender – should ever be denied if they choose it. - Rob Moolman, Executive Director for Utah Pride Center and SLAC Subscriber

www.saltlakeactingcompany.org
IN THE ROOM Before December 20, 2013 it was difficult to feel like our relationship was real at times. We were committed, there was no question about that. The proof was there for those who chose to see us. We lived under the same roof, moved three times, shared family events and vacationed together. To those not ready to see, we were friends cohabiting. Those who were ready knew we had a life together. December 20, 2013 helped us be seen and gave us the choice to be or not to be married. A choice that we never had before. Choice is empowering. People asked us if we were going to marry, we would tell them we chose to be together long ago and we are choosing not to be married. How wonderful to have the choice. As we approach a quarter century, may we continue to choose to be together. - Holly Tuckett, Documentary Film Maker of Church and State and SLAC Subscriber
As a child, I remember thinking that something was wrong with me. Having a family of my own was never going to be possible. The fight for marriage equality created a forum for my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, as well as allies, to share our stories. This helped me see that I am not alone; I never was. Marriage equality means that I can now start a family with my husband-to-be. - Kyle Mantas, SLAC Board Vice President
I think I accepted that marriage was a reality for me in stages. When I started dating my husband 12 years ago, marriage wasn’t even on the table. We lived and were married in New York, where same sex marriage was legalized a full two years before it was in Utah. However, it didn’t feel like a truly recognized union until the Supreme Court’s landmark decision was made for the entire country. - Joshua Black, SLAC Director of Communications
I never thought I’d get married. I was a relationship only kinda guy. Most men I knew were not interested in being in a relationship so when I found a man who wanted to get married, have children, and a house with a white picket fence, I swept him up and haven’t let go! We are beyond happily married, with a perfect son, and a perfect life. - Tito Livas, Utah Actor

University Professional Theatre Program ABBIE HAGEN (Assistant Costume Design)
"Aside from being my first professional credit for my costuming resume, this program will help me build the skills required of a costume designer. It will teach me the responsibilities and practices of a costume designer in a professional company. This program will help me understand what to expect for future internships and jobs, and serves as an entry point into the professional theatre community."
DAMIEN POELMAN (Assistant Light Design)
"In addition to making connections in the theatre world, I’m hoping to learn new lighting techniques during the process. This program will also teach me what it is to design quickly in a professional scenario and new methods for efficiently programming lights."
Thank you to: GRACE HEINZ (Assistant Sound Design)
"This opportunity will be a great experience in stepping out of the university world and way of doing things. I am excited to see how what I have learned in school translates into a professional production. The experience of being an Assistant Sound Designer in this capacity will give me a leg up in securing sound gigs in the future."
