WELCOME

Thank you for joining us in the launch of SLAC DIGITAL by bringing CLIMBING WITH TIGERS into your home. It’s a brave and innovative time for the world of theatre, to say the least, and we couldn’t have picked a more appropriate production to showcase as our first streaming offering. Originally produced as a world premiere in our Chapel Theatre in 2016, CLIMBING WITH TIGERS includes a cast of two live actors and nine animated birds. Integrating animation and live theatre is groundbreaking and naturally challenging, but this experience stretched SLAC artistically. To meet these unique challenges head on, the show’s design team developed a new creative language--resulting in a brand-new way to rehearse and create theatrical magic. The driving force of CLIMBING WITH TIGERS is the original book’s co-author, Nathan Glad. Everyone involved with the production continues to believe in his story’s message. In addition to creating exciting new theatre, one of the SLAC’s main goals in the original staging was to ensure that Nathan’s story authentically came to life, and that he would be blown away by it. (Spoiler: Nathan thought it was great! Success!) It’s four years later, and while our theatre is dark, we are thrilled to share this play with you and bring theatre magic into your home.

Whenever you are involved in a production at Salt Lake Acting Company, you become a part of SLAC’s family. Presenting CLIMBING WITH TIGERS at this time inspired a SLAC family reunion, and you’re invited. At the end of the play, I hope you enjoy the Q&A with the cast – Austin Archer & Robert Scott Smith; director – Alexandra Harbold; playwright – Troy Deutsch; author – Nathan Glad; founder of Red Fred Project – Dallas Graham. It’s moderated by the amazing Penelope Caywood – arts education director and the driving force behind other SLAC children’s productions over the past decade. It’s beautiful to see all of these talented artists virtually gather and share stories and love. It’s beautiful that through technology, we can invite you along for the ride at a time in which we must remain physically distant from our friends. Thank you once again for watching and for your support. Wishing you love and light, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

Flying Bobcat

Theatrical Laboratory

Robert Scott Smith and Alexandra Harbold

Let Us Take You To A Magic Place As a creative laboratory, Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory pursues ongoing research and experimentation in source material, process, and performance and quest for ever greater expressivity in our use of movement, text, sound, technology and design. I’d been dreaming of this type of work for what seems like a lifetime when I first asked Andra to collaborate with me on the POPUP@LEO series at The Leonardo Museum. That invitation led to the creation of three devised original works: SENSES 5, LOVE, and MIND|MATTER. It stirred up our curiosity about forming an ongoing creative partnership and ultimately inspired us to form our own totem and company, Flying + Bobcat. It also initiated other collaborative relationships that we have continued to build upon in CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. We recognize that what we dream of creating is only achievable through collaboration and mad, determined play. Which is evident in our most recent collaborations that have included; an original work created in collaboration with Ririe-Woodbury and Flying Bobcat, ALLEGORY (2020 Re-Imagined) and LIVE CREATURE AND ETHEREAL THINGS (2019) a dance performance inspired by The Red Fred Project. Other recent collaborations include; the 2018 world premiere of JUMP (a co-production with Plan-B in partnership with The David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists); LOST IN THE WOODS a theatrical concert at The Masonic Temple with the SLC Men’s Choir; FEAST a sitespecific performance at the Great Saltair with choreographer Charlotte BoyeChristensen, NOW-ID and NYC Playwright Troy Deutsch. Early in our work at The Leonardo, we discovered a book by Michael J Gelb, in which he explored what he identified as the guiding principles of climbing with tigers

22

saltlakeactingcompany.org

Leonardo da Vinci: Curiosità, Dimostrazione, Sensazione, Sfumato, Arte/ Scienza, Corporalità, and Connessione. We adopted those principles as a blueprint for our own creative process and hope they are evident in our work: curiosity and an appetite to learn; responsive experimentation; storytelling that taps into the potential and expressivity of the body and the senses; and an appreciation for the amplification of ideas possible through collaboration. Thank you to Salt Lake Acting Company for saying yes to Troy Deutsch’s beautiful adaptation of Nathan & Dallas’ CLIMBING WITH TIGERS and to this production. SLAC has supported the development of this new work at every turn and afforded us the opportunity to assemble this undeniably brilliant creative team whose work daily outstrips our dreams of what the project could be. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Salt Lake Acting Company’s Wardhouse sits on the traditional and unceded land of the Ute, Paiute, Goshute and Shoshone Tribes. We recognize the historic and enduring relationships between Indigenous people and their ancestral territories, and honor the Indigenous stewards past, present, and future of this land. This acknowledgment is a small example of our dedication to anti-racist practices, expressed in solidarity with those working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism and white supremacy.

TITLE I ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM From 2009 to 2019, SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program invited nearly 25,000 underserved K-2 students from Title I schools to attend our annual children’s show free of charge. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 are at a critical developmental stage to absorb arts experiences. They are endlessly forging new connections- reading the book in anticipation of the show, sitting in the chairs as the lights go down, clapping and cheering with the crowd, processing the experience with their friends, teachers, and families- each step expands their thinking, brings what they are learning in school to life in dynamic and stimulating ways, and ultimately promotes deep engagement in the learning process. In his response to PINKALICIOUS, a Kindergarten teacher pointed out the program’s educational value: “This kind of experience contributes to my students’ desire and capacity to pay purposeful attention, observe carefully and mindfully, envision what can’t be observed, to be brave and take risks, and to understand others viewpoints and respect differences. Arts education fosters habits of mind that lead to success.” --Jeremy Reynoso, Meadowlark Elementary

If you or your business would like to sponsor or contribute to SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program, please contact Erika at erika@saltlakeactingcompany.org
