Flying Bobcat
Theatrical Laboratory
Robert Scott Smith and Alexandra Harbold
Let Us Take You To A Magic Place As a creative laboratory, Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory pursues ongoing research and experimentation in source material, process, and performance and quest for ever greater expressivity in our use of movement, text, sound, technology and design. I’d been dreaming of this type of work for what seems like a lifetime when I first asked Andra to collaborate with me on the POPUP@LEO series at The Leonardo Museum. That invitation led to the creation of three devised original works: SENSES 5, LOVE, and MIND|MATTER. It stirred up our curiosity about forming an ongoing creative partnership and ultimately inspired us to form our own totem and company, Flying + Bobcat. It also initiated other collaborative relationships that we have continued to build upon in CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. We recognize that what we dream of creating is only achievable through collaboration and mad, determined play. Which is evident in our most recent collaborations that have included; an original work created in collaboration with Ririe-Woodbury and Flying Bobcat, ALLEGORY (2020 Re-Imagined) and LIVE CREATURE AND ETHEREAL THINGS (2019) a dance performance inspired by The Red Fred Project. Other recent collaborations include; the 2018 world premiere of JUMP (a co-production with Plan-B in partnership with The David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists); LOST IN THE WOODS a theatrical concert at The Masonic Temple with the SLC Men’s Choir; FEAST a sitespecific performance at the Great Saltair with choreographer Charlotte BoyeChristensen, NOW-ID and NYC Playwright Troy Deutsch. Early in our work at The Leonardo, we discovered a book by Michael J Gelb, in which he explored what he identified as the guiding principles of climbing with tigers
