Welcome
I’m delighted to welcome you to Salt Lake Acting Company’s 48th season. This year’s plays are so brilliant, they sparkle. Through dance, on a soccer field, and in a bakery, these unique settings offer playing grounds for impactful stories that will touch your humanity in the most unexpected ways. Filled with heart, humor, and deep human connection, we bring you a season of romance in unexpected places and coming of age in different ages. We can’t wait to share these plays with you. There’s nothing better than when our vibrant community of artists and audiences come together to create and experience storytelling at its best. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY UNIT AT MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER OF NEW YORK CITY, a poignant and provocative romantic comedy, is a perfect play to kick off our 2018/2019 season. Playwright Halley Feiffer is the daughter of acclaimed cartoonist Jules Feiffer and writer/performer Jenny Allen. She drew on (and then sensationalized) real-life experiences in the writing of this play. Her mother battled ovarian cancer when Feiffer was in her 20s. In an interview with City Theatre Company, who produced this play last year, Feiffer said, “I remember looking at the curtain that separated her side of the room from her roommate’s and thinking, ‘God, wouldn’t it be great if there were some cute family member of her roommate, say her son, who I could flirt with and that would help make all this pain and fear go away’.” A play is born. Thank you for joining us, supporting us, and celebrating this jewel of a theatre company with us. With gratitude and love, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

On the brink of her next round of funding, Sarah Boyd, Founder and CEO of Tactix, must hold her company together through a pesky journalist's questions and glaring doubts thrown her way surrounding the promises her company has made. It's a heavy load, and Sarah knows that she is the only one great enough to bear it.
SLAC thanks the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation for their support of this program.
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
SARAH SHIPPOBOTHAM
It’s funny how things happen: I had just had a conversation with Cynthia about wanting to be taken more seriously as an actor, and the next day she sent me this script asking if I would be interested in directing it! I have directed the students up at the U of U a lot, and I love it, but I had never directed with professional actors. Even the thought of saying yes to Cynthia’s offer – before reading the play – terrified me; however, I of course read the script, and as I read I began to think: I know why she reached out to me – it’s a totally language driven piece with lots of ‘bad’ language in it and an intimate scene, neither of which scare me. So, I said yes to this beautiful play that makes me laugh and cry in equal measure because it is fundamentally about two people who initially only have words to reach out with until an act of physical generosity opens them up in profound ways. This is a gloriously emotional play but it is language, wit and repartee that take the lead. Without an ability to play the complicated language games that Halley Feiffer has given us - with a specificity and confidence that people can both argue and feel at the same time - I don’t think the play works to its utmost potential. It is easy to write this play off as simple and a sit-com because of the kind of language Feiffer uses; but it actually demands the skills it takes to play the classics – Shakespeare and Shaw – because she constructs such long thoughts at times that twist and turn without stopping; she demands precision in building her thoughts; and the rhythm of her language and silences is what brings the laughs and tears to me. It is essential to have actors who are willing to trust the playwright’s style above their own comfort levels and who can bring humanity to the mathematical demands of the script once they have embraced those requirements first. I have loved working on this play with the cast because they have all been so generous in trying my philosophy on for size and for making a world that makes me laugh and cry in equal measure. I hope their skill at making it sound like they create their world doesn’t allow our audience to dismiss how demanding this piece is for them.

University Professional Theatre Program The UPTP nurtures Utah’s theatre students by giving them the opportunity to work in a professional production. In addition to the 95 production-based paid positions SLAC has created for university enrolled students, most of our Front of House positions are filled by theatre students from local universities as well. Students working in production settings receive crucial experience as actors or assistant stage managers, directors, designers, and dialect coaches, while Front of House students are learning what it is to take care of an audience, how to work in our ticketing system, as well as the ins and outs of how a theatre company functions. All of this is thanks to the UPTP’s support. Next season, we hope to expand that program to mentor even more students from local universities and allow them the opportunity to work alongside established theatre artists. Support for the UPTP develops Utah’s future artists, bringing these students one step closer to actualizing their dreams of a professional career in theatre.
Thank you to the The John & Marcia Price Family Foundation, Terence Kearns Stephens Charitable Trust and Anderson & Karrenberg for their generous support of this program. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY UNIT AT MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER OF NEW YORK CITY
