Welcome to the World Premiere of HARBUR GATE by Kathleen Cahill. Recipient of the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award. This award gave us extra rehearsal time to assist in the play's development. “The words “extra rehearsal time” are such plain sounding words for what turned out to be a transformative experience. This play is about veterans; we were able to bring the realities of military service into the theatre. Men and women who served in Iraq came to SLAC to speak to us. We spent hours with them, listening to their experiences, asking questions, hearing their personal stories. Two Marines brought unloaded guns to rehearsal for our cast to learn how to handle. We went to the VA and sat in on two support groups: one for veterans suffering from MST – Military Sexual Trauma – and another for veterans in the LGBTQ community. The level of honesty and the sharing in these groups was astonishing, heartbreaking, and real.~Kathleen Cahill, playwright “This week brought us to a different level. In The Room with Tamilla Woodard and Kathleen Cahill Erika: Welcome to In The Room! Please Kathleen: I’m Kathleen Cahill, one of the introduce yourselves and tell us a little about playwrights in residence here at SLAC. This is your relationship to SLAC. my fourth production with SLAC. I always have Tamilla: Hi, I’m Tamilla. I am relatively new to a wonderful experience here. Tamilla is so SLAC, but I feel like I’m at home. I’m directing brilliant and I just trust her completely. It is so HARBUR GATE, which I was first introduced valuable to have you, Tamilla, because I don’t to two years ago. Kathleen and I have been have to be at every rehearsal. I trust you! working on it ever since! We have done workshops on the play here in Salt Lake and in New York. I love SLAC because you guys are changing things and you all set an example of how a theater can be run and how much collaboration works. Cynthia: Thank you! Can you elaborate more on the work done in the Playwrights’ Lab in regards to this play and the reason behind why you wanted to have a reading of this work in New York? Tamilla: David Kranes invited me to the Playwrights’ Lab here at SLAC as a guest director working with a resident playwright. While here, I met Kathleen who had three small plays which she gave me to read. David asked Kathleen the question she herself was wondering, “Are these plays related?” I was like, “Uh yeah, in fact, it is one play!” There were definitely some things Kathleen wanted to figure out during the Lab. We were given a cast and then tried to answer questions Kathleen had: What is the relationship of the plays? The style? Kathleen wrote every day and night, and even during rehearsal. Different exercises helped us create many new moments in the plays, including the addition of a character who initially wasn’t in the first scene. When SLAC decided to do a reading of HARBUR GATE, I sadly couldn’t attend, so the person assisting me during the Lab stepped in to direct. Afterward, Kathleen and Cynthia came to New York because we wanted to spend some time together and answer any “last step” questions and to get some new actors to read the play. We had another reading of it in New York at the Lark Theatre after an invitation from Adrianne Campbell Holt.

Erika: Kathleen, what inspired you to tell this story? Kathleen: I was sitting in my kitchen one afternoon in 2013, listening to the radio, and they were talking about an exhibit in Washington D.C. on Americana war paintings. They talked about "The Veteran in a New Field" by Winslow Homer, and the title caught my attention. They noted how extraordinary and mystifying the piece was because it looked simple, but the more you studied it, the more it said. I had also just read in the newspaper that the military wanted to become gender neutral by 2016, and I thought, “The women are going to be veterans in a new field.” Those two thoughts together got me. I said to myself, “Why don’t I just go and interview some people?” I went to Pygmalion because they had just done a reading, and a female Marine was speaking. I asked her if I could interview her and if she could suggest other people. One thing led to another and I ended up at the VA. I interviewed around 25 people and then I started to transcribe the notes. Then I thought, “No. This is not how I do this.” I closed the notebook and started writing from, "What do I remember? What did I feel? What did I connect with?" That’s how I got started. Tamilla: It’s remarkable. The things we heard in the first week of research truly do match the things we are hear in the play. We are like, “That’s in the play!” “That’s how she is in the play!” It really transmitted from Kathleen’s mind to this play in a generous, clear way. It is so spot on. Erika: Do you want to talk a little more about the script and its journey from the Lab, through workshops, to where we are now?

Erika: Do you want to introduce yourself Tamilla: We have just been clarifying. We have Kathleen, even though our audience already been asking lots of questions and writing knows who you are? down what is fact and true, and making

sure not to take anything for granted. The play just reveals itself without us having to put anything on it. If we really get stuck in the mud, Kathleen will go do some research and come back and say, “Here. This is what I intended.” That’s what we go for. We ask, “What did you intend?” and then we say, “That is what we are going to do.” The actors ask questions. I ask questions. Kathleen asks questions. Then we all clarify. We all want to know: Who are we? What do we want? How do we get it?

Kathleen: I hope they are kind of speechless. Tamilla: I hope that they see the redemption the play is offering. There is possibility that the play proposes--I hope that isn’t lost.

Kathleen: We really got to ask these questions during the extra first week. Erika: Did you have anything else to add about the workshopping process? Kathleen: Workshops like the Lab are a dream for a playwright and it’s what you need. You’re not always lucky enough to get it. Tamilla: Plays are written about extraordinary events and extraordinary people. Some people don’t think there are many extraordinary things in the world, but working with these veterans allowed us to meet a bunch of extraordinary people. And they are literally heroes, and not just because they served in the military, but because of the cost of what they have done takes from their daily lives. They are paying for it with their humanity. Kathleen: Tamilla asked the veterans if they would suggest going into the military to someone, and every person in the room except one said, “Yes, do it.” Tamilla: They said that despite the difficulties and, in some cases, their lives being ruined. The community and comradery, and the desire to be something of magnitude is bigger. We are all engaged in that pursuit, especially in theatre. Erika: You’ve both worked on this script for a long time. What is it like coming back to do its World Premiere? Tamilla: I don’t think about it like that. The first time I read the play and envisioned it is the same as it’s being done now. The clarity of the theatrical gestures was there in the early drafts. Erika: What do you both hope the audience will talk about after they see the play?

She is co-founder of PopUp Theatrics, a partnership creating site impacting theatrical events around the world and in collaboration with international theatre artists. Currently, she is serving as the Artistic Director of The Five Boroughs/One City Project, a multiyear initiative of The Working Theater. The project will support the commissioning and development of 5 Playwright/ Director teams working in collaborations and creating theatrical works in response to and inside of working class communities in all 5 boroughs. She is a past Time Warner Directing Fellow at the Women’s Project Theater Lab, a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, alumnus of The Lincoln Center Directors Lab and artistic affiliate with New Georges. Aside from stage managing, Martin has taken an interest in lighting design, last year he assisted on Streetlight Woodpecker (SLAC) through the same UPTP program.
