Gender identity is how we perceive ourselves in the world and it goes beyond our biological makeup and is separate from who we are attracted to. Between the pronouns he and she, there are hundreds of varieties of personal gender pronouns. You can’t always know someone’s pronoun by looking at them; asking which pronoun they use shows respect and validation.

When we introduce ourselves at our first rehearsals, we state our personal gender pronoun. This is a baby step, and we are in the process of adding personal gender pronouns on all company contact sheets and even in the signatures of our emails. Using the wrong pronoun can make a person feel unsafe, dismissed, and the worst case scenario, erased. We all want to do the right thing and honor one’s identity, and as we learn, we will make mistakes. When you do refer to someone with the wrong pronoun, apologize and correct it. It is also important and good practice to use the correct personal gender pronoun when the person is not in the room and you’re speaking about them/hir/per/her/him.

In The Room with

Tracy Callahan The subject matter is timely and in many ways timeless. I feel challenged by all that must be accomplished in order to do the work justice. That is pretty exciting to me! What is your favorite part of the rehearsal process? Why?

Let’s start with your relationship with SLAC and how you came to know this play. I am originally from Chicago and came to Utah to work with Weber State’s Theatre Program about 23 years ago. SLAC was the first theatre I approached to see about directing projects. They hired me that season to co-direct an evening of one-act plays with three other local directors and I have been working on and off with them ever since. Although I knew about Taylor Mac and his unique performance style I was not aware of this play until I saw it on SLAC’s season and read it. I had a very strong reaction to the subject matter and Mac’s vision of domestic abuse and survival as well as the way he tore through the emotional gamut. What excites you about HIR and this production of it? It is like nothing I have ever directed—it is fresh and violent and sad and funny.

I like both my personal journey with the text in preparation for rehearsal and then discovering and unlocking all of the hidden truths of the play when I work with actors in the rehearsal room. I came to directing via acting so I feel a keen sense of the struggles and triumphs the actors experience as they cajole and at times wrestle the character from the page. Are there any unique challenges with this play? Hmmm where do I begin? I guess I would have to say that there is a unique balance in the play that Mac describes as “Absurd Realism”, absurdity that comes from a heightened but realistic point of view. Figuring out how to stretch the boundaries without losing the heart of the play is the blissful struggle of the text. Luckily I have surrounded myself with talented actors who are willing to experiment and explore the huge range that this play demands. Is there a character and/or theme in HIR that you particularly connect with? Why? The idea that we are “all everything” in the world and the way Mac explores gender roles and specifically the transgender character as a metaphor for society and the future is very

exciting. There is so much news about how we identify as though this is a new concept in the world but many cultures throughout history have accepted the idea of multiple genders. Until India came under British rule the notion of more than two genders was part of the culture. As the character Max, who is 17 and identifies as transgender says towards the end of the play, “HIRstory is not new. I’m not the new. I’m old. There is no new. How can you become new in a form that’s so old its experimentation is a craft.” We in the west are behind in our willingness to accept and embrace difference as a natural part of human existence. This view is one that I feel is both timely and a direct expression

of the kind of socially aware theatre I am most drawn to. What are you most looking forward to come opening night? I am interested to see how the play and this production lands on the audience. As with all plays, the ultimate test is how the audience receives the work that we have been exploring. I have found over the years that SLAC’s audiences are the most open and generous in the state but they are also discerning and hold us to a standard of excellence. That is exactly as it should be. It is a challenge that makes the journey all the more worthwhile.

WHO’S WHO AUSTIN ARCHER*

(Isaac) is thrilled to be back at SLAC for his 12th production with the company, having previously performed in five seasons of SATURDAY’S VOYEUR, as well as CLIMBING WITH TIGERS, THE CAT IN THE HAT, CLICK, CLACK MOO, HOW I BECAME A PIRATE, BLOODY, BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, and TOO MUCH MEMORY. He has also been seen locally at Pioneer Theatre Company in NEWSIES, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, SPELLING BEE, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and A FEW GOOD MEN. Television credits include MINDHUNTER (Netflix), BLOOD AND OIL (ABC), EVERWOOD (The WB), and TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL (CBS). A playwright as well, his play JUMP will premier in April at Plan B Theatre Company as part of their 201718 season. All the love and thanks to my incredible family, and to SLAC for being such a wonderful artistic home away from home for me. Enjoy the show!

LIGGERA EDMONDSALLEN (Max) is so

excited to be performing on the SLAC stage! They have just returned to Utah from New York, where they worked as a theatrical consultant for Parity, designing youth theatre workshops for transgender teens. Their prior work includes the role of Cassidy in Good Company Theatre’s production of APPROPRIATE. They are also an Ogden based potter, playwright and poet. They would like to thank their moms, Alicia Washington, and Nicholas Maughan for their love and support.

RICHARD SCOTT*

(Arnold) has worked as an actor, director, producer and instructor in the Utah theatre community for more than 30 years. He has worked with Pioneer Theatre Company, Grand Theatre, Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, Utah Opera and SLAC. Richard ‘s history as an actor with SLAC goes back to the 1990’s with THE GHOSTMAN, VOICE OF THE PRAIRIE, GUN SHY and RIDE DOWN MOUNT MORGAN. He directed THE MAN FROM NEBRASKA at SLAC. He was awarded the Salt Lake City Artist Mayor’s Award in 2010 and is a member of Actors Equity. Richard is currently Dean of the School of Arts, Communications & Media at Salt Lake Community College’s South City campus.

CHRISTY SUMMERHAYS*

(Paige) is so happy to be back at SLAC! Her previous roles with the company include Annette in GOD OF CARNAGE and Harper in ANGELS IN AMERICA. Most recently Christy was seen in two world premier plays at Plan B Theatre Company – as Hildeguard von Bingen in Tim Slover’s VIRTUE, and as Astrid in Eric Samuelson’s THE ICE FRONT. Christy is also an active member of the Utah film community and will be seen in the movie HEREDITARY starring Toni Collette and Gabrielle Byrne, filmed in Utah this year! Christy received her training at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Design) is in their second year at Westminster College pursuing their B.A. in Performance with a minor in Civic Engagement. As stage manager his most recent credit is STEEL PIER (UTheatre) and as assistant stage manager he recently worked on NEWSIES (Pioneer Theatre Company) and SATURDAY’S VOYEUR 2017 (SLAC). CYNTHIA FLEMING (Executive Artistic Director/Choreographer) has been in the world of dance and theatre professionally for over 37 years, during which time she performed in the Broadway, National and International companies with A CHORUS LINE. Since 1995 she has worn many hats at SLAC, including Choreographer, Director, Box Office Manager and Director of Audience Services. She developed SLAC’s high quality customer service titled: Mayberry meets Space Odyssey, which is the foundation for the record breaking number of subscribers. She conceived and created the position of Director of Communication and Audience Development and assembled the communication team to generate a renewed energy and excitement about the theatre. In 2010 she became Co-Executive Producer and is now honored to be SLAC’s Executive Artistic Director. Cynthia remains a working artist in the theatre and has choreographed many SLAC productions including SATURDAY’S VOYEUR for 15 years and directed/choreographed this musical for 5 years. Cynthia is proud to serve SLAC and its mission to engage and enrich community through brave contemporary theatre. GREEN ROOM GALLERY Salt Lake Acting Company is elated to continue our partnership with Art Access during the run of HIR. Art Access is a community-focused organization that strives to demonstrate that the arts are a universal vehicle for drawing out our similarities, celebrating our differences, and ultimately connecting us to each other. Through its philosophy of inclusion, Art Access serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Art Access is proud to present work by local trans and genderqueer artists Ella Mendoza, Jaxton Mullineaux, and Mel Wise for the production of ‘Hir.’ As paradigms around gender and self-expression shift, we look to artists to show us the experience that has necessitated those shifts, and the joyful possibilities of our future.
