Welcome

Welcome to Salt Lake Acting Company and to the Co-World Premiere of MERCURY by Steve Yockey. One of the joys of producing new work is having the playwright participate in the process. We were fortunate to have both Steve Yockey and Chisa Hutchinson, the playwright of SURELY GOODNESS & MERCY, involved in casting, the rehearsal process, tech rehearsals and opening night. From the very beginning, Salt Lake Acting Company has been an artistic home for many playwrights. The spirit of collaboration permeates our work, a necessity for breaking through to a higher caliber of artistic excellence. Our playwrights, as well as directors, actors, and design team, fully engage in the realization of every production that you see on our stage, creating a work that feels personal and radiates the true heart and spirit of the playwright. That’s where you come in. When the spirit of collaboration moves you, you are never shy about reaching out and requesting to see more work from these playwrights. That is so incredibly important! The direct line between the playwright and you is what allows us to continue to produce works that connect and inspire. Steve Yockey’s MERCURY has stretched the imaginations of our production and design team, and I’d like to especially thank Shannon Musgrave, Gage Williams, Janice Jenson, Erik Reichert, Justin Ivie, Linda and Glenn Brown, Jim Craig, Cynthia Kehr Rees, Phil Lowe, Michael Horejsi, and Ava Kostia for making the impossible possible.

(From Left to Right: Shannon Musgrave, Chisa Hutchinson, Steve Yockey, Cynthia Fleming) During the second weekend in September, SATURDAY’S VOYEUR closed, SURELY GOODNESS & MERCY opened, and MERCURY rehearsals were about to begin. This beautiful craziness resulted in Steve and Chisa being in SLC at the same time, and together we celebrated the closing of VOYEUR. What a magical weekend! Thank you very much for being here and feeling the spirit with us! Cynthia Fleming Executive Artistic Director

IN THE ROOM WITH DIRECTOR SHANNON MUSGRAVE CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE ABOUT HOW MERCURY CAME TO BE PART OF THIS SEASON? I first met Steve Yockey at the 2015 Humana Festival, where his play, JOSHUA CONSUMED AN UNFORTUNATE PEAR was presented as part of the 10-minute play festival. We were set to produce his play, BLACKBERRY WINTER at SLAC later that same year, and up until seeing this 10-minute play, BLACKBERRY WINTER was the only play of Steve’s that I knew. I was in awe that the same playwright who penned the poignant and tender BLACKBERRY WINTER was also responsible for the dark, bloody, hysterical romp that was JOSHUA CONSUMED AN UNFORTUNATE PEAR. We got to be friends during his time in Salt Lake City for BLACKBERRY WINTER and since then, I’ve gotten to know more of his work. We presented readings of BLEEDING HEARTS and MERCURY in our New Play Sounding Series, and they were both very well received by our audience. MERCURY, in particular, generated a huge response from our audience, with many wondering how it would or could be done in full production. Steve continued to develop the script at other theatres across the country and would always keep us in the loop on the updates. When it came time to put our 2017/2018 season together, Cynthia and I both knew we loved MERCURY (as did the entire staff), and were excited by the theatrical challenges of it. We also loved the thought of producing a horror comedy at Halloween time. So, here we are!

(Steve Yockey - Playwright and Shannon Musgrave - Director)

14

www.saltlakeactingcompany.org

WHAT IS IT ABOUT MERCURY THAT IS PARTICULARLY CHALLENGING? I think after audiences see the play, they’ll know. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are quite a few moments of grand theatricality. It takes a darkly imaginative playwright to put those things on paper, and a brave and inventive team of artists to put them on stage. Luckily, we had all of the above on this project. Our designers, actors, stage manager, construction crew, and entire staff jumped feet first into this bloodbath, and all seemed positively delighted to do so. I couldn’t have asked for a more adventurous or talented bunch of collaborators to help bring this play to life. I find a lot of joy in reminding people when we ware comparing blood recipes or debating the length of time at which torturous screams become comedic, that this is our job.

TALK ABOUT MERCURY’S JOURNEY FROM THE NEW PLAY SOUNDING SERIES TO THIS FULL PRODUCTION. MERCURY was one of our most exciting and engaging NPSS readings for many reasons: one, the material itself is a delicious combination of humor, horror, and humanity; two, it’s exciting for an audience to imagine how a play like this might work in full production; and three, at its core, it’s a pretty stark and not-so-farfetched look in the mirror at our society. There’s a lot to chew on in this play, and in a reading, the audience is asked to fill in the gaps with their imaginations. We now get the opportunity to put everything right in front of them. I think it’s going to be especially fun for our audiences who saw the reading to see the thing fully realized.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN ASTROLOGY? My extent of astrological knowledge up to now has been that I am a Taurus, which means I think I’m always right; so, yes. But I will say that this play has definitely had me thinking about unknown forces in the universe and the greater workings of things. Also, Mercury was in retrograde right before rehearsals for this play began, and I think I might have felt it.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR COME OPENING NIGHT? I can’t wait to see audiences’ reactions. It’s not often that theatre dips into this genre of pitch-black horror-comedy. I think now (for better or worse) is the perfect time for a play like MERCURY – when we’re right on the edge of losing our empathy, and our definitions of right and wrong can so often be at odds with those of our neighbors. I’m also really excited to see how Scene 7 turns out...

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’

educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During MERCURY, we would like to welcome Katelyn Limber as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program.

(Sound Designer - Cynthia L. Kehr Rees and Assistant Sound Designer - Katelyn Limber) "This program will help me immensely since I will be making connections while working on a show. Also, it will increase my knowledge of sound design, so I will hopefully learn different techniques for sound design." Katelyn Limber | Assistant Sound Design | Westminster College

GREEN ROOM GALLERY Salt Lake Acting Company is elated to continue our partnership with Art Access during the run of MERCURY. Art Access is a community-focused organization that strives to demonstrate that the arts are a universal vehicle for drawing out our similarities, celebrating our differences, and ultimately connecting us to each other. Through its philosophy of inclusion, Art Access serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Astrology: the interaction between the terrestrial and the celestial, studied since at least the 3rd millennium BC, controversial since the 18th century. Science? Magic? B.S.? Whatever you think, we bet you just might enjoy reading your horoscope every once in a while. In the Green Room for MERCURY we are featuring art by local artists exploring the influence of the cosmos on our earthly bodies. Working in mediums from watercolor to stone sculpture and everything in between, enjoy work from Jes Berg, J Leone Colombero, Robert Commander, Barbara Ellard, William Emerich, Grant Fuhst, Karen Kurka Jensen, Jonna Ramey, and David Sharp.

Robert Commander - Transformation

Barbara Ellard - Obu

Throughout the run of MERCURY we are pleased to present work by long time SLAC subscriber Phil Martineau. Phil Martineau is an artist with a love of color. He is fascinated with how color, contrast and geometry combine to define form and motion. A mechanical engineer by training, art has provided him with a way of creatively connecting the natural world with his technological world. In his fused glass work, he creates vibrant assemblies of color and shapes to represent natural, abstract and human-made images. In this collection, Phil draws on his experiences and memories to visualize images that can be represented by glass. These glass images are designed to evoke emotions and impressions of the world around us. He hopes his work provides connections between the observer and their experiences with the world.
