Welcome

It’s renewal time, our favorite time of year! Salt Lake Acting Company’s staff would like to express their gratitude to all our subscribers. “‘My subscribers’. Those of you who know me may have heard me refer to SLAC subscribers as ‘my subscribers’. I was hired to obtain and retain SLAC subscribers in 1998. We had 800 subscribers. We have grown to a record breaking number of over 3400 and many of you are part of my original 800. We share the love for this theatre and the awe and wonder of creativity. Our amazing customer service was inspired by you. You are family. I’m honored to share this ‘jewel’ in our community with you.” Cynthia Fleming Executive Artistic Director “I have friends who work in theatres sprinkled across the country and they all gasp in envy when I talk about SLAC’s subscribers. Not only are they in awe of the sheer number of you, but also of your commitment to and ownership of this place. The brave, challenging work we produce is only possible and only important because you see it, you engage with it, you debate it. Thank you.” Shannon Musgrave Associate Artistic Director “I love the attention to detail our subscribers have! They are as interested in the details of the set and props as they are in the script and performance. We like to keep this in mind as we go through the design process so our design details match the expectations of our subscribers.” Janice Jenson Producing Director “Working closely with our subscribers is the best part of my job. Not only are you brave and adventurous, you are eclectic, interesting, funny, kind, understanding, supportive and smart. You make Salt Lake Acting Company such a wonderful place.” Erika Ahlin Director of Marketing and Engagement “SLAC subscribers are the best! Talking to our subscribers in person or on the phone is an absolute joy. It doesn’t feel like interacting with a nameless, faceless customer. Rather, you can tell you are talking to member of the SLAC community!” Samantha Matsukawa Communication & Audience Development Manager “One of my favorite parts of my job is making sure our subscribers’ commitment is valued and

appreciated. From setting up the ticketing system so the Box Office has all the tools they need, to training our front of house staff to care for you upon arrival. Why? Because you’re worth it.” Nick Fleming Ticket Operations/Database Manager “Moving to Salt Lake City from New York City was quite the culture shock; I never thought I would find a group of like-minded people in this city that would make me feel at home. As soon as I began working at SLAC and met our subscribers, I thought to myself, ‘I have found them!’” Olivia Custodio Development Manager “I am grateful for the passion our wonderful subscribers have for our theater and the shows we produce. Without you all we would never be able to produce such brave theatrical works.” Amy Ware Executive Assistant “As part of the Box office team I get to be the first and last person our subscribers talk to. During that time I learn about their lives, friends and families. Our subscribers are the backbone of this theatre, and I can personally say they are incredible.” Emilie Starr Communication & Audience Development Thank you SLAC Subscribers, you make everything possible.

Director's Notes

Most modern playwrights trace their heritage to Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906, THE DOLL'S HOUSE, HEDDA GABLER) who is often called the father of realism. But the problem with these realistic plays is that they aren’t based in reality. Realism, along with romanticism and melodrama, depict a world populated by characters with Freudian self-knowledge. Characters who know exactly what they want, how to get it, and are willing to take action because they know that through their efforts success, catharsis and perhaps even happy endings are achievable. Oh, if only real life was anything like realism. Other playwrights take a road less traveled - I like to count myself in this group - and draw inspiration from Anton Chekhov (1860-1904, THE SEAGULL, THE CHERRY ORCHARD). Chekhov wrote about characters that stumble through life with little self-knowledge. Characters that more often than not have no idea what the hell they want and if they do they have no fu#@ing idea of how to achieve it. In this Chekhovian world, success and happy endings are chance events. And the only possible catharsis is laughter - if not for the characters, at least for audiences. STUPID F***ING BIRD borrows characters and storylines from Chekhov’s THE SEAGULL (1896) in order to create a new play and shows that, in our postmodern world, Chekhov is more relevant than Ibsen. Welcome to a real that’s more real than realism. Welcome to Chekhov.

WHO’S WHO SALT LAKE ACTING COMPANY

– is celebrating its 45th season in flight, and continuing its mission is to engage and enrich community through brave contemporary theatre. Founded in 1970, SLAC is a not-forprofit 501(c)3 professional theatre dedicated to producing, commissioning, and developing new works and to supporting a community of professional artists. SLAC has been nationally recognized by the Shubert Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Edgerton Foundation, among others. SLAC operates under a SPT Actors Equity Association contract and is a Constituent Member of Theatre Communications Group (a national organization for nonprofit professional regional theatres), and the National New Play Network (a national alliance of non-profit professional theatres that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays).

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION

(AEA) – founded in 1913, represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. The Equity emblem is our mark of excellence. www.actorsequity.org *Member of Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States.

STUPID FUCKING BIRD

National New Play Network

(NNPN) - is the country’s alliance of nonprofit professional theaters dedicated to the development, production, and continued life of new plays. Since its founding in 1998, NNPN has supported more than 150 productions nationwide through its innovative National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere program, which provides playwright and production support for new works. Additional programs - its annual National Conference, National Showcase of New Plays, and MFA Playwrights Workshop; the NNPN Annual and Smith Prize commissions; its residencies for playwrights, producers and directors; and the organization’s member accessed Collaboration, Festival, and Travel banks, and online information sessions - have helped cement the Network’s position as a vital force in the regional theater landscape. NNPN's programming allows its members and their affiliated artists to create, grow, and share new work across the country and around the world, and it strives to pioneer, implement, and disseminate ideas and programs that revolutionize the way theaters collaborate to support new plays and playwrights. Its most recent project, The New Play Exchange (www.newplayexchange.org), launched in January of 2015, is already changing the way playwrights share their work and others discover it. NNPN’s 29 Core and more than 75 Associate Members - along with the more than 250 affiliated artists who are its alumni, the thousands of artists and artisans employed annually by its member theaters, and the hundreds of thousands of audience members who see its supported works each year - are creating the new American theater. University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During STUPID FUCKING BIRD, we are thrilled to have Assistant Costume Designer Rachel Kimber and Assistant Sound Designers Alex Thedell and Korey Lamb as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program (UPTP). “As a costume designer in the professional world I’ll most often be working with new people and an evolving creative team frequently. Being exposed to a new setting with new faces will help me learn how to adapt to these changes. Having an important position for the show will also help in my learning as I’ll have a lot to do and work on over the course of the internship.” – Rachel Kimber | Assistant Costume Designer | Westminster College “This is a program I have been hoping to be involved with for a while. This program provides me with a huge amount of experience and a look into the professional world of theatre and sound design. I’m hoping to learn not only how a sound designer and a theatre work together in the professional world but also to learn the workings of another theatre and sound system. I’m hoping to get an understanding of the theatre and add it to my repertoire of theatres. I also look forward to learning to troubleshoot a different system than what I have worked with.” – Korey Lamb | Assistant Sound Designer | Weber State University “The UPTP gives me experience in a professional theatre, allowing me to build my resume, work with other professionals, and hopefully be considered for future employment. Chances for field work like this are not always available. Thank you, SLAC!” -Alex Thedell | Assistant Sound Designer | Weber State University

DID YOU KNOW? Salt Lake Acting Company’s reach extends much further than the walls of the 19th Ward House. Our suite of arts education, outreach and new play development programs connect us to the community like never before. • The University Professional Theatre Program has given 53 university and college students experience in all aspects of a professional theatre production. • SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program opens the world of theatre to more than 1,300 Title I elementary students who see our children’s show for free. • The SLAC Scholarship gives four deserving Utah college and university theatre artists a financial award to assist in jumpstarting their careers. • SLAC makes meaningful contributions to the American Theatre arena through our New Play Development programs: ∏∏ For 21 years, the New Play Sounding Series has provided a safe, creative space for playwrights and audiences to explore the questions that arise as a new play is being developed for full production. ∏∏ In 2015, SLAC started a unique and innovative program called the Salt Lake Acting Company Playwrights’ Lab. The Lab assembles a company of artists from Utah and all around the country to investigate and develop brand new scripts. The Lab is writer-led and writer-focused, giving playwrights invaluable space and resources to deepen their work. ∏∏ SLAC’s partnership with the David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists provides playwrights 35 and younger an opportunity to workshop a new script with a team of professional theatre artists, culminating in a public reading at SLAC. • For each production, we partner with nonprofit organizations whose mission exemplifies or addresses a theme or idea from the play, including with Canine’s with a Cause, Alzheimer’s Association, Music & Memory Coalition and more! • Our Green Room Gallery is a space that allows us to nurture our local, creative community, and celebrate the reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. This season, we partnered with Art Access for every mainstage production, bringing varying and thought-provoking art to our patrons. Thanks to the generous support of donors and corporate sponsors, we can pilot and implement innovative programs that impact the theatre world and place SLAC on the national stage. If you would like to learn more about one or all these vital programs, please contact Olivia at 801.363.7522 or olivia@ saltlakeactingcompany.org

New Play Sounding Series Join us for a FREE READING of Steve Yockey’s newest play

MERCURY

Monday, April 25, 2016 @ 7pm Steve Yockey is the playwright of this season’s hit BLACKBERRY WINTER, as well as BLEEDING HEARTS which was read in the New Play Sounding Series in September. We are thrilled to have him back at SLAC to hear his newest play, MERCURY. This pitch black comedy has an illicit affair, a couple hanging on by a thread, bears at the window, and an adorable missing dog named Mr. Bundles. No one's happy, people stop being nice, and blood spills in a story that mashes up violent myth and ideas about "good neighbors" to explore what happens when the mercury rises. SLAC thanks the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation for their generous support of this vital program.

Chapel Gallery Birds are powerful symbols of power and freedom with their ability to soar above the earth and carve out flight paths over thousands of miles. They appear in plays, myths, legends and folk tales, and frequently appear as messengers of the deities in stories of old. Birds are sometimes associated with human personalities and can be portrayed as proud, wise, crafty, devious, annoying, pensive, hyperactive, or regal. Birds have always been a popular subject for artists. The colors, forms, and symbolism of birds intrigue those people who feel compelled to tell stories about our world in visual or auditory form, so Art Access asked several artists to loan us their renditions of birds for this exhibit. Some are realistic, and some are fantastical or whimsical. Whether you’re proud as a peacock, hyper as a hummingbird, or wise as an owl, we hope you enjoy the bird art. Thanks to participating artists Traci O’Very Covey, Susan Gallacher, Sheryl Gillilan, Natasha Hoffman, Chase McCleary, Ben Morgan, Kelly Seim, David Sharp, Terence K. Stephens and Toni Youngblood.

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
