Welcome W
hen remembering your first play as a child, ‘magical’ might be the word that comes to mind. As SLAC presents its 6th children’s play, we would like to highlight the design team that creates the magic. It’s a group of highly skilled creative people who work closely with the director and translate her vision into reality. We asked them what they love about working on SLAC’s children’s play: “Working on the children’s play at SLAC is one of my favorite gigs ever. Being able to introduce the next generation of theater goers to high quality productions and influence the lives of young people is a joy and a privilege. I was lucky to find theater as a creative outlet when I was young. I remember a song I sang in middle school music class. It was called ALL OF US FROGS. The closing lyrics read, “...all of us frogs have a beautiful person inside.” I’ve found myself reflecting on that experience while directing the music for A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD. I hope the lessons learned from the antics of Frog and Toad will help each of us find and develop the beautiful person we have inside.” ~Darrin Doman, Musical Director
“What I find fun about the children’s shows at SLAC is the opportunity to design types of costumes that I rarely get to do in my career. In past productions I have created dogs that drove race cars, cows that could tap dance and with FROG AND TOAD I have the opportunity to create a western style snail, moles that fast change into birds and a Toad who ‘looks funny in a bathing suit’ - What's not to like!” ~KL Alberts, Costume Designer “It is such a rewarding experience having a bus load of excited Title One students come to see the kid’s show. Many have not been to a play before, but there is always a moment when all their energy is hushed. They become totally engaged in the story of the play. Nothing else matters to them but watching the production. It is the magic of theatre.” ~Keven Myhre, Set Designer “The best part is seeing the excitement in the preview audiences, and watching as many of the kids see their first play.” ~Jesse Portillo, Light Designer “It’s delightful to work with such high energy actors in such a high energy show.” ~Annie Brantley, Assistant Stage Manager “I fell in love with theatre when I was a tiny little girl and my mom made costumes for our church play. I would watch the play from the wings each night and soak in the magic of the performance. I am lucky to work on SLAC’s children’s play because I get to share a small piece of that magic of theatre I first experienced as a child and still love as an adult.” ~Janice Jenson, Associate Producer We thank them for their artistic brilliance and inspiration. Thank you for joining us and embracing your inner child. Our warmest wishes for this holiday season, Cynthia and Keven Executive Producers

In The Room With
Penelope Caywood & her Daughter Presley, SLAC'S Kid Connection
Penny: So, introduce yourself to the kids and adults who are coming to see the show.
Penny: What’s your favorite part of A YEAR FROG AND TOAD?
Presley: Hi! My name is PJ. My mother is the director of A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD therefore I’m related to SLAC, too. I do video interviews with the cast. Besides doing cast videos - I really like going to rehearsals to meet the actors and to get to know them a little bit better. I also really like to swim and dance and sing. And I really, really like to make art. It’s one of my many hobbies. Oh, and I also like candy.
Presley: I really like the part where they sing about how Toad looks funny in a bathing suit. The song kind of gives the joke away by saying he looks funny in a bathing suit - so he better look funny, Mom.
Penny: What do you know about the FROG AND TOAD series of books by Arnold Lobel? Presley: Frog and Toad are very good friends. There is one story where Toad rakes Frog’s leaves and Frog rakes Toad’s leaves. Oh, and when Frog was little his dad said, “Spring is just around the corner” so Frog looked around every corner he could to find Spring. Finally when he turned the last corner by his house, his mother and father were planting flowers and he found spring. Penny: Presley, you have become an excellent reader. Is there a FROG AND TOAD book you would recommend? Presley: Yes, actually there is a book called Frog and Toad All Year in our Storytown text books in my class. Well, I read that story at least 7 or 9 times and I think that each time I did it made me realize that I was getting better. The hard words became easier every time until I was practically speed reading the book. Penny: So, what do you think about me directing another children’s show at SLAC? Presley: Well … sometimes I feel sort of weird because I think when are you going to stop? It’s been 5 years, already! I was 2 when you started. It’s sort of crazy. But I’m actually sort of glad because every year I get to meet the actors and I get better at doing my interviews. And I love your shows.
12
Penny: Do you have any suggestions and ideas for me? Presley: So, the scenery should be sort of weedy behind the stage and then they actors should peek in through the reeds. For Toad’s costume it should be low and have extended legs and since they jump really far. The actor should remember to stretch his legs out as far as they can go. At least 10 inches. They should definitely look like that. Whoever is playing Frog (don’t take it as an insult) should be more slimy. Maybe some sequins on his back. And Toad needs some warts. Penny: Do you have any tips for the actors that I should pass along? Presley: 1. Look out at the audience and be confident, or you are going to look like an 8-year-old at a bad school play. They need to work on their game if they are going to act like that. 2. Don’t use your cell phones at rehearsals and always have your scripts. Cell phones are a big distraction. If you are playing with your phone then you will have it taken away. 3. We're watching you really closely. The audience sees everything. 4. (This is actually a really good one) If you mess up on stage don't act like a robot and don't be dull. Work on your expression! 5. be loud and clear and don’t look at your feet. Penny: What would you tell families about the show? Presley: This show is really great and awesome - the actors really express themselves and they are professional actors. They are really lucky to be working with my mom. Are we done? Because I’m going on my break now.

He served as head writer and Co-Executive Producer on the team that reinvented “The Electric Company,” now airing on PBS. Film work: Dreamgirls (lyrics to the song “Patience,” Oscar nomination).
ROBERT REALE
(Music) Shortly after graduating music school and several years touring in jazz and rock bands, Rob moved to New York in the mid-80’s where he responded to a demand for authentic, hi-end music for film and television and founded the production music library, 8118 Music. He gigged in clubs and pits off-Broadway and also began collaborating with his brother Willie creating musical theater. They are a winning combination: Rob provides the music, Willie, the words. They had several OffBroadway successes before their production, A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD brought them to Broadway and garnered Rob a Tony nomination for Best Original Score Music.
PENELOPE CAYWOOD (Director)
returns to direct her fourth children’s production at SLAC. Penny started acting at the age of five. Her first role was the Shy Princess in THE KING AND I, she still has the costume to prove it. Her career started early, but her talents were not limited to the stage. She traveled across the country with a youth singing group—The LaMarca American Variety Singers. She sang on children’s records,
attended math school in Japan, took jazz and tap, played the flute and participated in speech contests. When she was 19, Penny was involved in the creation of a youth theatre company in Palos Verdes, CA called Curtains Up! Locally Penny is best known for her work with the University of Utah’s Youth Theatre where she has been the director for the past seven years. She has directed every U Youth Theatre production and is responsible for educational and outreach programming too. Penny has directed at Rogers Memorial Theatre and SLAC.
DARRIN DOMAN
(Musical Director) is “toad-a-ly” thrilled to be directing the music for A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD. Really, he's so happy he could just "croak". Other musical direction credits at SLAC include CLICK CLACK MOO: COWS THAT TYPE and HOW I BECAME A PIRATE. Darrin’s first professional job as a Production Pianist/Musical Director was with the Pink Garter Theater in Jackson, WY - the same place where Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's band leader, is rumored to have gotten his start. Some of Darrin's favorite musical directing credits include INTO THE WOODS, NUNSENSE, THE KING AND I, YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN, HONK, JR., ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, JR. and CAPTAIN BREE AND HER LADY PIRATES. When he's not behind the scenes directing music or playing in the band, Darrin enjoys being on stage. He has particularly fond memories of his role as Cosme McMoon in SOUVENIR where he had the chance to act, sing and play the piano all in the same production. Watch for Darrin on the main stage in SLAC’s upcoming production of MR. PERFECT. He works fulltime at the University of Utah Hospital and recently completed a quest to see the 7 New Wonders of the World. Many thanks to the production staff, crew and cast for their hard work. Happy almost anniversary to the frog of Darrin’s dreams. Enjoy the show!
K.L. ALBERTS

She has choreographed many SLAC productions including THE PERSIAN QUARTER; GO, DOG. GO!; BAT BOY THE MUSICAL; AND WATER LILIES from CABBIES; COWBOYS; and THE TREE OF THE WEEPING VIRGIN. SALT LAKE ACTING COMPANY
Celebrating its 44th season of innovative and thought-provoking plays, Salt Lake Acting Company has produced an expansive body of work in the long-standing support of its most open and adventurous audience. SLAC is one of the chief arts organizations in Utah, and reaches an audience of over 36,000 people annually, including our subscriber base. Salt Lake Acting Company provides an artistic home for Utah’s finest actors, playwrights, directors, and designers and will continue to make a significant contribution to our community and to the American theatre field by commissioning, developing and producing new plays. Salt Lake Acting Company is a 501(c)3 non-profit professional theatre.
Partnerships and Outreach SLAC is thrilled to be partnering with Washington Elementary School and Intermountain Therapy Animals. We are encouraging our audience to bring the following donations to benefit our neighbor Washington Elementary: Chap stick, small bottles of lotion, band aids, shoe laces, belts and sweat pants. Intermountain Therapy Animals is an organization that seeks to “enrich the quality of life through the human-animal bond.” The organization is also dedicated to the improvement of literacy in children through their R.E.A.D. program
SLAC Title I Matinee Programs During SLAC’s annual children’s show, we offer eight free matinee performances to over 1,400 Title I schoolchildren. As school curriculums continue to narrow at the expense of the arts, SLAC’s free performances provide a live theatrical experience to academically at-risk schoolchildren who often lack access to opportunities as basic as field trips and arts exposure. Through a study guide available for students and teachers, pre- and post-play discussions, and our professional production, we help develop higher order thinking skills, engage students’ imagination, and provide arts access that has been proven to be associated with better long-term outcomes for under served kids.

The Green Room Gallery
WHO’S WHO
For the fifth year running, we welcome younger and older students from the Visual Art Institute in Salt Lake City to exhibit in the Green Room Gallery during our children’s production — inspired by the school’s efforts to plant the seed of creative curiosity early in life. Established in 1978, VAI encourages students to integrate their creativity into every aspect of their thinking, education and life, and provides exceptional visual art programs to elementary through high school students, including year-round classes and an intensive figurative workshop in the summer. VAI provides highquality instruction and classes in a wide range of media focusing on essential applied skills, working largely from life, as well as conceptual thinking. Many VAI students go on to earn local, state, and national awards as well as entrance and scholarships to top universities and art schools throughout the country. You’ll find literature about the Visual Art Institute in the Gallery. Please stop in to enjoy the exhibition.

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD we are thrilled to have an actor, and aspiring arts management professional at SLAC. We would like to welcome Weber State University Student Amelia Rose Moore, and Westminster Student Amy Ware as part of the University Professional Theatre Program. “I think the UPT program is an amazing thing. It gives university students a chance to have professional experiences. I know that I will use my time and what I’ve learned here at SLAC in my future theatre endeavors. The production team and my cast mates have taught me so much about children’s theatre and techniques to reach audiences of all ages. Thank you to SLAC and the sponsors from the UPTP for making opportunities like this available for me and university students across the state!”
UPTP students Amy Ware and Ameilia Rose Moore
- Amelia Rose Moore | Actor “This internship has given me an intriguing look into the administrative world of the theatrical arts.” -Amy Ware | Arts Management
