DIRECTOR’S NOTES

W

hile standing outside a jumpy house in LA’s Griffith Park at a pre-schooler’s birthday party, a fellow in an Army t-shirt stood monitoring two airborne boys as I stood guard over my own four-year-old fairy twins. Trying to be as polite as I could, I screamed, “Watch out! …Sorry…you said you write PLAYS?” “Well, I’ve written two, but nobody will read them. I mostly do TV.” “Could I read them?” I asked. “Sure” he said. “I’m TJ.” And with that, I received my first authentic Army Handshake. He sent me two military-themed plays, both very provocative and both very emotional. They contained characters that leapt off the page and who I instantly felt bonded to. They spoke like real people. They had dreams and problems that I understood. They had wonderfully important things to say, about the military, about academia and about mentorship and marriage, love and sacrifice. I was hooked. I immediately sent one of them to Karen Azenberg, the Pioneer Theatre Company’s Artistic Director and asked her to take a look and assure me that I wasn’t crazy. She called within the week, was just as enthusiastic and in love as I was. The rest, as they say, is history. I don’t think this is quite how Kazan and Odets met, or Lapine and Sondhiem, or even Lord Chamberlain and Shakespeare (although I would have LOVED to see THAT jumpy castle!). But that chaotic yet auspicious introduction began a wonderful friendship and collaboration whose debut you are about to witness and hopefully will continue for a long time, or at least until I have to pay him a dowery. Enjoy the show. Matt August Director

WRITER’S NOTE

A

play, onstage, in front of an audience. That outcome seemed impossible when I started scribbling ideas in a notebook over 8 years ago. I was in my car, and I was actually supposed to be working a sales job, but I couldn’t bring myself to get out of the car. I had just listened to an NPR piece about Marilee Jones, the Dean of Admissions at MIT who was embroiled in a scandal over her academic credentials. After hearing the story, I felt torn by an argument inside my own head (usually good fodder for writers) and started putting some thoughts on paper. When I stopped, almost an hour had passed. That involuntary immersion in the idea strongly suggested that there was something worth pursuing, and the result is Two Dollar Bill. I want to be clear that this play is not about Ms. Jones, but it does explore questions raised by that scandal and serves as an attempt to make sense of my own feelings about the American educational system and how academic credentials are valued by our society. Speaking of the educational system, the fact that this play made it to the stage owes a great deal to my children’s preschool. Had it not been for a friendly conversation with the play’s director, Matt August, as we both stood outside a jumpy castle at a kid’s party, Two Dollar Bill might have remained solely an argument inside my head that I happened to write down. Lucky for me, that conversation began a long string of events that ultimately got the play to the stage in front of you. It has been an amazing and rewarding journey. I thank you for taking the time to see it. Enjoy. I am incredibly grateful to the following people: My wife, Nicole, who has loved me, inspired me, encouraged me, on this journey. My sons, Ben, Spencer, and Theo, who are the reason for everything I do. My parents, Tom and Patty Brady, who always supported me and showed me the power of combining dreams with hard work. Karen Azenberg and Chris Lino, as well as the amazing staff and crew of the Pioneer Theatre. My Director, Matt August. My amazingly talented cast. My TV-writing partner, Rasheed Newson. Friends and mentors, Ken Lazebnik and Kate Fuglei. Will McFadden and EST-LA Theater Company. Professor Ron Dufresne at St. Joseph’s University, Professor John Hall at the University of Wisconsin, and Professor Robert Goldberg of the University of Utah, who provided tremendous insight into the academic world. TWO DOLLAR BILL

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth The Painful Truth ad your eyes to the world will open pre-print of those who are stigmatized page 37 and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain. “This book gives voice to real people who suffer with chronic pain and to their caregivers. With the wisdom and compassion of a seasoned practitioner, he tells their stories....We would all do well to heed the call of those forced to live with chronic pain. This excellent book is a very good place to start.” —The Rev. George Anthony Hoeltzel, Episcopal priest, Yonkers, New York
