Die Irae, Kurt Wenner
By merging classical art techniques with new digital technologies, Kurt Wenner lets Festival patrons be a part of his large scale custom art installations. Don’t forget to bring your camera.
KURT WENNER Daily City and County Steps Pavement art always has been an unusual, even extraordinary, medium, but in Kurt Wenner’s hands, geometric perspectives bend to create stunning, large-scale 3D installations that also carry important community messages. Inspired by a desire to draw like the Old Masters, Wenner’s art is often large and elaborate. For the Grand Canyon National Geographic Visitor Center, he created a jaw-dropping 3D installation of the famous natural wonder that allowed visitors to experience the illusion by standing on the edge and absorbing the depth of the art piece. RE-AWAKENING THE RENAISSANCE LECTURE WITH KURT WENNER Wed, June 24, 7pm Library Auditorium Wenners’s narrated slideshow recounts his journey and the ideas behind classical drawing, proportion, and perspective that he has rediscovered and applied to his artwork. By using these lost ideas of the past, he transformed the once simple form of Italian pavement drawing into a global art movement known as interactive 3D art. SPONSORS
DAILY DEMONSTRATIONS WITH KURT WENNER Daily, 4pm and 6pm City and County Steps Twice each day join Wenner for demonstrations detailing the customized technique used to create acclaimed 3D art installations all over the world. The Utah Arts Festival has a distinguished history of supporting new works through its annual commissions. uaf.org/commissions CHAMBER ENSEMBLE COMMISSION “Juno” by Robert Honstein Sat, June 27, 4PM Library Auditorium “Juno” reflects on that moment of anticipation right before the season’s first big storm: a sense of childish delight at the prospect of snow days and sledding, tempered by adult worries about the inevitable difficulties and frustrations. Honstein’s diverse output of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music has been performed throughout North America by ensembles such as the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra and the New York Youth Symphony. The recipient of the Aaron Copland Award and honors from ASCAP, SCI, Carnegie Hall, and New Music USA, he co-produces Fast Forward Austin, an annual marathon new music concert in Texas and is a founding member of the New York-based composer collective, Sleeping Giant. CHAMBER ENSEMBLE COMMISSION CONCERT Sat, June 27, 4PM Library Auditorium The Vertigo Ensemble Andrew Rindfleisch–Conductor/Artistic Director Experience new contemporary chamber music with works by Miguel Chuaqui, Carl Schimmel, and Timothy Beyer, and the world premiere of “Juno,” a new work by Robert Honstein, winner of the 2015 Utah Arts Festival Chamber Ensemble Commission. As we explore the collision of art with technology for the 2nd year, we thematically “reevaluate materials and their meaning.” Take your personal data and generate art, upcycle spare parts into little sculptures, and take regular, everyday materials and explore their artistic uses. Located on the grass north of the Leonardo. CARDBOARD VR EXHIBIT With the use of Google Cardboard, Virtual Reality becomes reality for everyone as participants will demo Apple or Android smartphones turned into Virtual Reality goggles. BULLET TIME EXHIBIT This exhibit utilizes inexpensive web cameras and micro-controllers to reproduce the technically challenging “Bullet Time” special effect by filming participants in hyper-slow-motion from a continuously shifting viewpoint.
Make a Lamp Create a laser cut LED tea lamp. Duct Tape Art Make and take a duct tape flower or invent your own duct tape design. Magic Wands Make your own color changing LED magic wand while supplies last. Finger Knitting Knit using just your fingers and yarn. No needles necessary!

WATTSMART, UTAH.
SUMMERTIME AND SAVING ENERGY IS EASY. Everyone in Wattsmart loves summer, but they don’t take the heat when it comes to their electric bills. They save energy so they can stay in the lowest pricing tier of summer electric rates. You see, in the summer, electric bills are based on a tiered pricing
structure, so the fewer kilowatt-hours you use, the lower your rate will be. So, keeping energy use low can really help you save. You may not live in Wattsmart, but you can learn to live wattsmart. Get details about tiered summer rates wattsmart.com.
Interactive Art Installations
Nourish your brain, stomach and spirit—a perfect place for kids of all ages. Engage and collaborate with onsite sculptures, create make-and-take projects with some of Salt Lake’s most creative art-making nonprofit organizations and play an instrument. The PB&J Booth offers sandwiches and milk for younger appetites, with proceeds benefiting the Visual Art Institute. uaf.org/kids ART YARD: DRAW LIKE AN EGYPTIAN! Go back in time to Ancient Egypt in the Art Yard. Explore a tomb, marvel at the mighty Sphinx, and learn to write, draw and create like the Pharaohs did.

Some exciting installations that all kids can work on:
Summerhays Music Center Instrument Petting Zoo Play a real band and orchestra instrument with the guidance of music teachers.
The Pyramid The shape of ancient pyramids is believed to have symbolized the sun’s rays. Create your own sun to add to its walls. Mini Mummies Mummification was part of the elaborate set of burial customs that included casting spells of magic. Do your part to fend off the mummy’s curse by beautifying their linen bandages. The Great Sphinx Uncover one of history’s most mysterious creatures comprised of lion and human features by painting the surface of a replica.

The House of Frog Once upon a time a frog named Gary
worked his way out of a small pond and saw the world by touring with royalties such as Martha Graham, Barry Manilow & N.Y.C. Ballet.
Upon returning home he saw the lack of technical support for the arts in our kingdom. Through much sweat, toil & good times had by all, he built Oasis. That was 37 years ago and still to this day you can catch a glimpse of Gary as he hurries off to do his next show. But never fear as he has collected a well trained staff to help you with your needs.

Golden Rule Petition We can use the knowledge and truth of the Golden Rule together – all over the planet. An Invitation to All: 1st ~ Strive and Incorporate: strive to understand the meaning of the Golden Rule for myself and how I wish to incorporate it in my life, recognizing that this effort is sometimes hard and yet always helpful. 2nd ~ Invite and Request: invite/petition/request those who represent me to do the same: live by the Golden Rule. Our representatives will change the world for the better when they apply it within their organizations, such as in any of the religious traditions, teachings and in our communities; environmental, civic, economic, educational, political or social entities. 3rd ~ Stand in Unity: unite with others on this planet who wish to take real responsibility toward compassion and fairness; and to build an understanding with my neighbors about what is to be done in each new situation based upon the principle of the Golden Rule. Simply stated: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Respect for All Life is the foundation. Please visit our website: www.goldenruleproject.org/petition if you would like to sign our petition. ~~~~~~~
