Mayor’s Artist Awards.

FROM MAIN STREET TO YOUR HEARTS I am honored and delighted to welcome you to the 40th Annual Utah Arts Festival! Thanks to the citizens of this state, the Department of Heritage & Arts and the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, admission to the Utah Arts Festival is FREE for everyone on opening day—Thursday, June 23. This day without admission fees truly furthers our nonprofit mission of making art, in all its variety, available and accessible to all. In fact, that commitment is what inspired Governor Gary Herbert to declare June 2016 “Utah Arts Festival Month” and honor us with a 2016 Governor’s Award for Leadership in the Arts. The written declaration illuminates the impact we’ve had in the past four decades: • The Utah Arts Festival was the nation’s first state-sponsored arts festival. • The Festival introduced Utah audiences to acclaimed international performers such as Laurie Anderson, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bela Fleck, MOMIX, Taj Mahal, Turtle Island String Quartet, Philip Glass, and others. • Annually, it draws more that 80,000 art fans to its gates and offers more than 6,000 community outreach tickets to underserved and special needs populations. • The Festival fosters a growing multitude of community partnerships with businesses and other non-profit organizations, and more than a thousand community members volunteer each year. • The Utah Arts Festival represents the State of Utah through its involvement in national organizations and receives recognition as one of the top festivals in the U.S. by entities such as the International Festival Events Association, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The Art Fair Sourcebook. The City of Salt Lake has also been good to the Utah Arts Festival year after year. From Main Street to Triad, the fairgrounds to Gallivan and Third South, and now, at home at Washington and Library squares, SLC’s commitment to accessible art has been steadfast. In 2016, we happily nod to our past and predict a bright future of summer art and fun for generations to come. This summer, look for fresh new talent to join your traditional Festival favorites as we celebrate 40 years new, together! Best Wishes for a Happy Festival,

MAYOR’S ARTIST AWARDS 2016 Mayor Jackie Biskupski and the Salt Lake City Arts Council will present their annual awards on Saturday, 7:15PM, on the Festival Stage. Visual Arts: Kathryn Stats, born in Idaho in 1944, is a highly regarded local and national artist. Her earliest art lessons came from Frank Erickson and Ken Baxter, both Utah painters living in Salt Lake City. In addition to being an exceptional artist, Kathryn has shared her talents with many Utah artists throughout the years. Service to the Arts - Individual: Betsy Burton, co-founder (38 years ago) and co-owner of The King’s English Bookshop, has written a book about life in an independent bookstore entitled (appropriately enough) The King’s English: Adventures of an Independent Bookseller and has served on various boards in the book business, in the Local First arena, and in her community. Service to the Arts - Organization: Utah Symphony | Utah Opera connects the community through live music at Abravanel Hall, the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, the Deer Valley® Music Festival, and in communities throughout the state. One of only 15 full-time orchestras in the United States, the Utah Symphony celebrates its 75th Anniversary under Maestro Thierry Fischer, with Utah Opera’s Christopher McBeth at the helm of opera performances. Service to the Arts - Organization: Utah Tibetan Association is a community committed to preserving Tibetan culture, arts, language, and providing guidance to the younger generation of Utah Tibetans. They are also committed to showcasing their unique culture and traditions with Utahns while adding to the diversity of our Utah population. Performing Arts: Jason Hardink is principal symphony keyboardist of the Utah Symphony and the artistic director of the NOVA Chamber Music Series. His work with NOVA has expanded the series’ education and outreach to junior high schools, and includes collaborations with PLAN-B Theatre, Utah Symphony, Utah Chamber Artists, Madeleine Choir School, the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, and Utah Heritage Foundation. Special Recognition for its 40th Anniversary: The Utah Arts Festival has made art and artists accessible to Utah audiences since its inception on one block of Main Street in 1977. Multiple generations have grown up with the Utah Arts Festival and benefitted from the important role it serves in cultivating an appreciation for the arts in our community; To nominate an individual or an organization for the 2017 awards, email Kandace Steadman at the Salt Lake City Arts Council at kandace.steadman@slcgov.com. For a list of past awards visit uaf.org/mayor ..

T

he Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival is not just a theatrical presentation – any more than the Taj Mahal is just a house. It’s eight of the liveliest, most professionally-produced plays this side of Broadway.

Drama, comedy, Shakespeare, contemporary theatre and a few genres in between. And it’s conveniently set in the midst of Cedar City’s stunning new Beverley Center for the Arts.

2016 Plays: June 27 – October 22 Much Ado about Nothing Henry V The Three Musketeers The Cocoanuts

Mary Poppins Julius Caesar Murder for Two The Odd Couple

But wait, there’s more: The interactive Greenshow, backstage tours, play seminars, panel discussions with world-class cast members and artists, plus enlightening play orientations. And a nearby renowned national park or two, or three. No wonder it’s called a festival. It’s also quite accurately referred to as The Greater Escape. Plan yours today. Visit www.bard.org or call 800-PLAYTIX for tickets.

ELVIN BISHOP’S BIG FUN TRIO Sat, June 25, 9:45PM Amphitheater Stage “Elvin Bishop music,” has practically become its own musical genre, one that soulfully blends Chicago Blues and R&B, good-old Rock & Roll, and big doses of Doo-Wop, Zydeco, and Gospel. When Elvin was a kid, music captured his soul and, after honing his guitar playing skills, he and his friend Paul Butterfield founded a band (Chicago, 1965) and produced a game-changing album. Integrated bands playing blues music were unheard of at the time and, subsequently, white bands began playing the blues like never before. Elvin himself gained pop success with his 1976 gold-record earning smash hit, “Fooled Around and Fell In Love.”

to wow you with her unique style of rap and beat box, accompanied by sizzling keyboarding. Jet Black Pearl will be joined on stage by local musicians, Harold Carr on acoustic bass and Flavia CervinoWood on violin.

STEEP CANYON RANGERS Sun, June 26, 9:45PM Amphitheater Stage The Steep Canyon Rangers sound like North Carolina. At their core, a bluegrass band, these musicians happily walk the line between festival favorite and sophisticated string orchestra. Their mix of serious chops and good-natured fun earned the Steep Canyon Rangers the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2013 (for Nobody Knows You). Why else do you think comedian/banjoist Steve Martin chose them for his backing band?!

INCENDIO Sat, June 25, 10PM Festival Stage Instrumental world music at its best! Guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, violin, Celtic harp, piano, bass, synthesizer and a multitude of ethnic percussion instruments create the exotic melodies that accompany a desert caravan moving beneath a blazing sun, the sound of waves washing against a pristine South American beach, even the lilting rhythm that conjures the rolling green hills of Ireland. JET BLACK PEARL Sun. June 26, 6:30PM Park Stage Accordion Diva, Jet Black Pearl will entertain Festival audiences on Saturday and Sunday when she performs on the City & County Building Steps as one of our featured Street Theater performers (see schedule on page 8). But you won’t want to miss her star turn on the Park Stage. She’s guaranteed

CIMARRÓN Sun, June 26, 8:15PM Festival Stage The percussive strings and maracas, dynamic vocals and full-throttle pace of Colombian joropo ensemble Cimarrón have earned them Grammynominations and international acclaim. The sound, from the Orinoco plains of Colombia and Venezuela, has earned its place among the exciting variety of regional Latin American music. Through their powerful, moody and unbridled artistry, Cimarrón lives up to the meaning of their name Cimarrón—“wild bull.” This engagement is made possible through: Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. SIERRA HULL Sun, June 26, 8:50PM Amphitheater Stage Sierra played the Grand Ole Opry at age 11. Now “she plays the mandolin with a degree of refined elegance and freedom that few have achieved,” says Bela Fleck, the genre-leaping banjo master. Don’t miss making a remarkable Festival memory with a bluegrass recording artist of the highest order. Sierra will also facilitate a mandolin workshop at the Library on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

MINGO FISHTRAP Sun, June 26, 9:45PM Festival Stage Austin. Texas. Soul. Formed in the mid-90s in Denton, Texas, Mingo Fishtrap, an eight-member ensemble, has released six albums, the latest, On Time, praised for its tight horn arrangements blaring out a “healthy dose of Motown and Memphis.” The band is steeped in Southern blues, funk and soul and they apply that fat sound to make infectious, modern music. Singer Roger Blevins, Jr. has got soul for days and the band’s army of players lays down rich tones. Think The Doobie Brothers had a baby with Tedeschi/Trucks.

2016 Commissioned Works.

Adrian Fry, Choreographer

Randy Bauer, Chamber Music Composer

Kris Johnson, Jazz Composer

Since 1990 the Utah Arts Festival has provided seed funding to classical music and jazz composers who annually created new work to premiere on our stages. We began commissioning choreographers just three years ago. Few other organizations in the state have provided the impetus for more original performing art. DANCE COMMISSION

CHAMBER ENSEMBLE COMMISSION

JAZZ COMMISSION

Fri, June 24, 8:15PM Festival Stage Adrian Fry, first soloist with Ballet West, was awarded the Utah Arts Festival’s Dance Commission this year. Adrian was born in Omaha, Nebraska, where he trained with Omaha Theater Ballet School before moving on to study at the School of American Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. In addition to dancing principal roles with Ballet West since being promoted to first soloist in 2015, Adrian has appeared as a guest artist with Ballet Victoria in British Columbia and with Heartland Youth Ballet and Lincoln Midwest Ballet. We are very excited to see what Adrian has up his choreographic sleeve when his commissioned piece is premiered as part of The Stars of Ballet West by Christopher Ruud on Friday, June 24, 8:15PM, on the Festival Stage.

Five Grand Micro-Adventures by Randy Bauer

“A Shift West” by Kris Johnson Sat, June 25, 7:30PM Festival Stage In this new composition trumpeter and composer Kris Johnson reflects on his recent relocation to Utah from Detroit. It is a candid musical diary entry that characterizes the experiences Kris has had as a Midwesterner transitioning to a new culture, city, and position as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Utah. Listeners will hear the distinct difference between the two cities, the warmth that Kris experienced being welcomed into a new community, and the ways in which this new experience has broadened his world.

Performed by The Vertigo Ensemble Andrew Rindfleisch, Music Director Sat, June 25, 4PM Library Auditorium Randy Bauer, a composer and accomplished jazz pianist, is associate professor of music at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. His works have been performed from New York City to Zagreb, and he is a winner of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award and has received recognition from DownBeat, Jazz Composers Alliance. About Five Grand Micro-Adventures he says, “I found out that my wife and I would become first-time parents right around the same time I received this commission. My months-long reflection on what a grand adventure it would be to raise our child came to writing the piece, which is cast in five short movements. There’s wonderment mixed with contemporary music techniques, the second and fourth movements are calm and introspective, while the outer and middle movements are full of energy and optimism. Performance also includes exciting new contemporary chamber music by Brian Ferneyhough, Stephanie Ann Boyd, Timothy Beyer, and Clint Needham.

Literary Arts. Let words transform you at two venues of literary programs. At the Big Mouth Stage you’ll find national and local award-winning poets, comics and storytellers. At the SLCC Community Writing Center you can engage with writing activities, performances and workshops.

BEE YOURSELF: TRUE STORIES FROM THE HIVE “WHOOPS!” Sat, June 25, 9PM Big Mouth Stage The Bee in SLC embraces lovingly competitive storytelling. Ten storytellers’ names will be picked from a hat and each will have five minutes to tell a true story on the theme “Whoops!” without using notes. The theme “Whoops!” should elicit memories and stories of happy accidents, surprises and mistakes. Do you have a story to tell? Visit thebeeslc.org to learn more. LITERARY HEADLINERS Michael Mlekoday Thu, June 23, 8PM Big Mouth Stage A former video game salesperson, presidential campaign organizer, pool hustler and itinerant preacher, Michael is the author of The Dead Eat Everything (Kent State University Press, 2014), selected by Dorianne Laux as the winner of the 2012 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize. In 2009, Mlekoday, as a member of the St. Paul team, won the National Poetry Slam and then returned the following year to coach the team to its second championship. William James Fri, June 24, 3:30PM Big Mouth Stage William “Uncle Billjim” James is a punk rock poet. He’s an editor at Drunk In A Midnight Choir and a two-time Pushcart nominee whose poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Noble Gas Quarterly, Electric Cereal, Misfit Magazine, and Word Riot among other publications. William’s first full-length collection Rebel Hearts & Restless Ghosts was recently released. Lauren Elma Frament Fri, June 24, 4PM Big Mouth Stage Lauren Elma Frament is a poet and aspiring mortician from Manchester, NH. Her work appears in Drunk in a Midnight Choir, Borderline, and Nin Journal and is forthcoming in the anthologies We Will Be Shelter (Write Bloody Publishing) and Again I Wait for This to Pull Apart (FreezeRay Press). She likes baking pies, cross stitching, and standing in the front at punk shows.

Jesse Parent Fri, June 24, 7PM Big Mouth Stage Since his poem “To the Boys Who May One Day Date My Daughter” went viral in 2014, Jesse has put SLC on the map for performance poetry. A craftsman, wordsmith, and best of all a true entertainer, Jesse consistently has audiences in stitches while bringing them to tears. What’s most admirable and honest is Jesse’s love of performing. “Good Ghost” Bill Moran Fri, June 24, 7:30PM Big Mouth Stage Bill Moran (Good Ghost Bill) was a proud member of the 2011–2013 Austin Poetry Slam national teams, as well as the 2012 and 2013 Austin Poetry Slam Champion and 2013 Southern Fried Haiku Champion. He has co-directed the Texas Grand Slam two years running, taught national and international workshops, and conducted long-term poetry programs at a local juvenile justice center. Julian Moon Sat, June 25, 4PM Big Mouth Stage A wildly-talented lyricist, singer-songwriter Julian Moon hailed from Salt Lake City before her acoustic pop writing abilities gained the attention of Warner Bros. Records. In March 2015, she released her debut album Good Girl, which was met with rave reviews. Matt Hart Sat, June 25, 6:30PM Big Mouth Stage Matt is the author of Radiant Action and five other books of poems. A co-founder and the editor-inchief of Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking & Light Industrial Safety, Matt is also the former frontman of 90s punk band, Squirtgun. Hart ultimately pursued his MFA in creative writing and began teaching in the Academic Studies Department at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Dallas Graham Sun, June 26, 2:30PM Big Mouth Stage A true humanitarian, Dallas will be reading works by children (who are ill or who have special needs) who have written stories and poems and other forms of literary arts. Prepare for a tender-hearted reading for anyone from any background and any age.

Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib Sun, June 26, 4:30PM Big Mouth Stage Hanif is a poet, writer, and dessert enthusiast from Columbus, Ohio. He is the editor of Again I Wait For This To Pull Apart (Freezeray Press, 2015), an anthology of poems relating to music. Hanif founded Pen and Palette Poetry, an open mic in Columbus and has conducted workshops and given readings across the country, from coffee shops to colleges. Hanif occasionally dabbles in the art of poetry slam (placing fourth overall at the 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam). John Louviere Sun, June 26, 6PM Big Mouth Stage John Louviere turned to music and songwriting in his early 20s to help him navigate the emotional turbulence of young adult life. His infectious croon and probing lyricism made his transition into a musical career natural. He has since garnered a loyal following not only throughout Utah but also (and most impressively) throughout the West. His vocals blend an eerie melancholia with an almost country-infused jazz. INDIE SLAM FINALS Sun, June 26, 8PM Big Mouth Stage Poetry slams are raucous, uncouth, untidy, irreverent, and downright borderline gospel. The poetry slams at the Utah Arts Festival are known to gather big crowds! Get to the Big Mouth Stage early if you want a seat. TEAM POETRY SLAM FINALS Sun, June 26, 9–11PM Big Mouth Stage Slam teams from around the nation will make their way to the Utah Arts Festival with only one mission: to blow your mind! Come watch 10 teams duke it out for a large cash prize. And like the Indie Slam, the Team Slam usually sees crowds of 350+ with standing room only.

To fathom something is to understand its nature and limits. The unfathomable, then, is something too deep to measure, incapable of being fully comprehended. Unfathomable writing—poetry—activates and deploys the immeasurable depths of meaning, via word etymology, association, allusion and music. Matt will reference versions of the historical and contemporary Sublime, as a way of talking about the unfathomable and consider strategies for exploring our own immeasurable depths.

The House of Frog Once upon a time a frog named Gary

worked his way out of a small pond and saw the world by touring with royalties such as Martha Graham, Barry Manilow & N.Y.C. Ballet.

INTRODUCING

Stay N’ Play Day Care

Upon returning home he saw the lack of technical support for the arts in our kingdom. Through much sweat, toil & good times had by all, he built Oasis. That was 37 years ago and still to this day you can catch a glimpse of Gary as he hurries off to do his next show. But never fear as he has collected a well trained staff to help you with your needs.
