Andrea Miller
JAZZ COMMISSION/SALT LAKE CITY JAZZ ORCHESTRA, FEATURING VOCALIST ANDREA MILLER AND TRUMPETER CHUCK FINDLEY Fri, June 23, 7:45PM Festival Stage Andrea Miller’s voice has been described as soulful, sensual, hypnotic, and endearing. Influenced by Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, and Stevie Wonder, Miller is heating up the jazz scene coast to coast and receiving national airplay, including opening for Al Jarreau at the Newport Jazz Festival. Known for her 21st century updates of classic songs, she will be headlining with the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra for an electrifying performance. A veteran session musician, Chuck Findley plays trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, and other brass instruments. Findley’s resume is filled with recordings with many legendary artists that include being part of two “Tonight Show” bands, tours with Jimmy Dorsey and Buddy Rich and recordings with Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, and Elton John, to name just a few.
Jarekus Singleton
JAREKUS SINGLETON Fri, June 23, 8:15PM Amphitheater Stage A musical trailblazer with a bold vision for the future of the blues, Singleton’s sound—equally rooted in rap, rock, and blues traditions—melds hip-hop wordplay, rock energy, and R&B grooves with contemporary and traditional blues, turning audiences of all ages into devoted fans. With his untamed guitar licks and strong, soulful voice he moves from ferocious and funky to slow and steamy to smoking hot. NIKI J. CRAWFORD Fri, June 23, 9:15PM Park Stage Niki Crawford has been described as “one of the biggest and hidden gems in jazz, [and] hearing Crawford is like listening to a hurricane blending its thunderous roar into a serene rose petal.” Crawford is a versatile singer who inflects funk with R&B, reggae and, even a bit of rock, she is often compared to Lucille Bogan and Tina Turner.
Niki J. Crawford
SAMBA FOGO Fri, June 23, 9:45PM Festival Stage Drawing on rich Afro-Brazilian traditions and mythology, Samba Fogo provides high-energy music and dance performances that bring the fire, joy, and celebration of Brazilian Carnaval and the historic traditions of the culture’s spiritual meaning to audiences young and old. Samba Fogo seamlessly blends traditional with contemporary, adding modern dance, fire dance, and diverse instrumentation into the mix, creating a unique, exciting, and culturally enlightening audience experience. DEXTER ALLEN Fri, June 23, 9:55PM Amphitheater Stage Dexter Allen’s sweet blend of blues, R&B, soul and funk caught the eye of living blues legend Bobby Rush who made him the lead guitarist in his worldwide touring band. Allen’s unique style goes back to his roots with a host of deep Mississippi blues originals. “Tell them the baldheaded bluesman Dexter Allen’s in town,” as described in a lyric from his 2014 “Blues Party,” an upbeat shuffle song. MITCH BARRETT TRIO Sat, June 24, 8:50PM Festival Stage Barrett’s original work cultivates a contemporary

understanding that reaches beyond his Appalachian heritage to the music that is being called Americana today. A versatile and riveting storyteller of Appalachian tales, his storytelling resonates with humor and poignancy for audiences of all ages. A winner of many songwriting competitions in the U.S., Barrett has performed at scores of American roots, bluegrass, and storytelling festivals. RJD2 Sat, June 24, 9:45PM Amphitheater Stage RJD2’s (Ramble Jon Krohn) progressive samples incorporate rich soul cuts, clean horn sounds, and idiosyncratic film clips to create a cinematic hiphop sound that alternates between moody and bombastic. “I treat my records like thrillers,” RJD2 says of his work. FRUITION Sat, June 24, 9:45PM Festival Stage The trio of lead singer-songwriters’ voices of Fruition naturally blend into the threepart harmony that drives the energy of the group’s string-infused songs. Eight years after an impromptu busking session, the Portland, Oregon-based quintet has grown from a rootsy, string-centric outfit to a full-fledged rock band with an easy but powerful grasp of soul, blues, and British Invasion era pop.

Art Yard Activities
Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Lighthouses are tall towers on land that guide seafarers to safety through dangerous ocean waters. Most lighthouses now are automated, but the main feature of all lighthouses is a bright light that warns ships of obstacles and helps them find harbors. Create your own miniature lighthouse out of eco-friendly materials to guide you into a more sustainable future on land and at sea with the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. Utah Museum of Fine Arts Join the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, inspired by traditional Japanese seascapes and the art of Gyotaku fish prints, to make your own rubbings and drawings of fish! Gyotaku was created hundreds of years ago by Japanese fisherman who used ink and rice paper to record the fish they caught, as cameras weren’t yet invented to debunk big fish tales.

Mayor Jackie Biskupski and the Salt Lake City Arts Council will present their annual recognition of individuals and organizations who make a difference in the artistic life of our community.
MAYOR’S ARTIST AWARDS Fri, June 23, 7:30PM Festival Stage Visual Arts: Geri Cordova is known for her youthful, exuberant style that incorporates chalkboard art, graphic design, fine art techniques, and her own Latina style, frequently described as bold, courageous, and vocal as a body of work that reflects her approach to life. A Salt Lake native, Geri often incorporates thrift store finds or dumpster dive treasures in her mixed media work, demonstrating how art can be accessible and available to everyone. Geri helps others through art therapy for children with terminal illnesses or those in foster care. Art Education: Lynn Hoffman-Brouse, a Utah based photographer, specializes in environmental portraiture and documentary essay. She travels throughout Utah and the world to photograph many, mainly nonprofit, organizations’ work. Lynn is amazed by the power of the still photograph and documentary form; she believes that it can function as both art and a way to create change, to challenge biases, and to help foster a more tolerant world. Lynn founded TheDocumentaryProjectFund, a nonprofit organization that awards support to documentary photographers working on longterm projects in their communities.
Mayor’s Artist Awards.
Service to the Arts - Individual: Shawn Kane, owner of Kane Consulting, plays a critical role in many Salt Lake City arts events and concerts, yet his work goes largely unnoticed and unknown by hundreds of thousands of patrons—all by design. Shawn works tirelessly to ensure that events are presented safely. Formerly the Events Services Security Manager for all Olympic events in Salt Lake City, Shawn conducts emergency communication and response trainings and provides leadership to help make events in our city safe, fun places, where people want to be.
Performing Arts: Susan Memmott Allred, a Costume Designer for Southern Utah University, has worked with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Mormon Miracle Pageant, Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas PBS Show, and Utah Opera. She first realized a love for the arts and music while attending school at Millard High School, Dixie State, and Southern Utah University. During college, Susan performed in many musicals, singing throughout Utah and touring Europe with Dixie College. Susan also received the 2015 Governor’s Award for her contribution to the arts in Utah.
Service to the Arts - Organization: Gifted Music School, a nationally recognized nonprofit music school for children in Salt Lake City, implements a new national standard for comprehensive music education for young people at every level. The school is recognized for producing students who are accepted to top conservatories and academic institutions annually. Their student enrollment is 500, with 120 of those students attending the Project-GRIT program at Mountain View Elementary, where the Gifted Music School is creating a pathway to success for many at-risk children.
To nominate an individual or an organization for the 2018 awards, email Kandace Steadman at kandace.steadman@slcgov.com. For a list of past awards visit uaf.org/mayor.
