Art Lives Here.

WE ASKED: WHAT ASPECT OF THE UTAH ARTS FESTIVAL MOST INSPIRES YOU? “I love seeing people from every walk of life coming together to celebrate art, food, music, and dance in our urban center. The Arts Festival creates a temporary but meaningful community at Library Square where diverse crowds come together for a shared experience in our urban space.” - Jason Mathis Executive Director, Downtown Alliance & EVP, Salt Lake Chamber ONE FESTIVAL. ENDLESS FORMS. Welcome to the 42nd annual Utah Arts Festival, home to artistic expression, surprising discoveries, and art fans alike! This year the Utah Arts Festival, Utah’s largest outdoor arts event, will electrify the heart of downtown Salt Lake City with four days of multidisciplinary artistic programming. In the spirit of speaking from the heart, we have invited some movers and shakers from the community to answer the question: What aspect of the Utah Arts Festival most inspires you?

To add my voice to this free-form question: I am inspired by the way the Festival comes alive, through the eyes of a child captivated by a world-class dance performance or among the buzz of a night time music Festival crowd illuminated by lights. It’s about the moments you find yourself gasping and cheering (or both!) at our international short film series or poetry slams, or by connecting with the artist whose extraordinary hands have created a masterpiece in the Artist Marketplace, or welcoming the next generation of budding artists and art fans through a seasonal, cyclical, and, this year, circular-inspired Kids Art Yard. This year, I hope you find your imaginations stirred and stretched skyward as the dancers of BANDALOOP grace the glass facade of the Main Library above the reflecting pool. We continue to welcome, encourage, and celebrate the thousands of micro and macro moments that place art at the center of our community conversations. Through this massive activation of public space, we welcome you to the Utah Arts Festival—always a destination for unlimited possibilities, meaningful engagement, and artistic awakening. Together we bring art to life. Welcome to everyone’s Festival: our home is alive and open to all. Enjoy!

Lisa Sewell, Executive Director

“I am always inspired by the diversity of art forms presented at the Utah Arts Festival—spoken word, music, film, visual, digital. Every year I encounter new ways artists use their talents and it keeps me coming back to the Festival year after year.” - Karen Krieger Executive Director, Salt Lake City Arts Council “The aspect of the Utah Arts Festival that most inspires me is how it brings the community together in joy and wonder to celebrate the immense power, diversity, depth, and beauty of creative human expression.” - Peter Bromberg Executive Director, Salt Lake City Public Library “Since I moved to Utah 10 years ago, the Utah Arts Festival has been a refuge— the cacophony of music, cornucopia of art, and creation of dance is a magical moment where we realize the grandeur and richness that art brings to our lives and our community.” - Adam Sklute Artistic Director, Ballet West “The Utah Arts Festival creates a vibrant community gathering space filled with motion, music, dance, film, and art. The street performers and kids activities are always fun and engaging. It’s a great place to buy gifts for friends and family! I love visiting the artist booths and purchasing unique one-of-a-kind jewelry, as well as rugs, hats, prints, ceramics, and paintings. There is something for everyone to enjoy and explore.” - Vicki Panella Bourns Director, Utah Division of Arts & Museums

Encaustic is a process where a color pigment mixed with melted beeswax and resin is applied to a surface such as a wood, canvas board or paper. The application is affixed with heat. Kids Art Yard: Circles!

KIDS ART YARD: Circles! Daily, Noon–9PM Southwest Corner of the Festival Circles are found everywhere you go— whether you gaze at the night sky, inflate the tires on your bicycle, or explore ancient petroglyphs on a rock wall. They are universal symbols with extensive meaning in art and tradition. They represent infinity, wholeness, and so much more. Come play with us in our land of circles. HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES Dream Catchers In many Native American cultures, these intricate webbed circles served as protective charms. Join us in decorating our own dream catchers with upcycled materials. Dot Paintings Aboriginal artists in Australia created images out of dots to disguise the sacred meanings behind the stories in the paintings, and you can too!

Mandalas of the World Mandala is Sanskrit for circle, and cultures all over the world create them. Many Asian cultures used them for meditation, the Aztecs used them for timekeeping, Celtic peoples used them for protection. The iconic rose stained windows of Gothic architecture represented a connection to the divine. What will your mandala represent? Spheres of the Universe A sphere is a 3D circle. How many spheres do you encounter in your everyday life? From lollipops to planets, baseballs to oranges, we can create our own wacky universe of everything spherical. Summerhays Music Center Instrument Petting Zoo Have you ever wondered what it is like to play a band or string instrument? Can you see yourself or your child playing an instrument in the future? Come visit Summerhays Music in the Art Yard and test a musical instrument. All ages welcome. We have experts to help you make your first sound on an instrument. And we’re careful: Instruments are well sanitized before they are played individually.

MAKE & TAKE PROJECTS Every year the Utah Arts Festival partners with local nonprofits to make the Art Yard a dynamic place of wonder for Festivalgoing kids. Here’s who you’ll find this year: Art Access Join us to make your own unique circle sticker to wear throughout the Festival with pride! Art Access is an inclusive arts organization working to make artistic development accessible to all members of our community. Craft Lake City Join Craft Lake City to make your own paper circuit. You’ll combine arts and technology to make your own glowing craft. Using a battery, LED and copper tape, young artists can create their own circuit on paper that illuminates a personalized work of art. Natural History Museum of Utah All around us are examples of natural spheres: from the planet we inhabit, to the seeds we find inside fruit, and to some of our own physical features. Come learn about the round parts of nature and why they may have developed that way. Paint a cool key chain in your style while you learn at the Natural History Museum of Utah’s booth in the Art Yard!

This is a happy place where budding young artists get their hands dirty, their wiggles out, and their imaginations stirred. Here young children collaborate with on-site sculptures, create make-and-take projects with some of Salt Lake’s most creative nonprofit organizations, watch some creative films with Fear No Film Kids, and play an instrument.

Tracy Aviary Join us in exploring the role circles play in the bird world by crafting a vulture mobile, as we learn about the connection between circular flight patterns and thermal currents. Tracy Aviary inspires curiosity and caring for birds and nature through education and conservation. Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Artist Yayoi Kusama’s polka-dot fantasies inspire us to see how something as simple as a circle can be used to create intricate patterns and artworks. By repeating the pattern, Kusama shows us there is power in numbers. Kusama explains, “With just one polka dot, nothing can be achieved.” Using paper and polka dots, create your very own spherical sculptures to follow in Kusama’s footsteps with the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art! Utah Museum of Fine Arts Get inspired by a 1,000-yearold circular Mayan chocolate pot in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) collection and then decorate your own chocolate cup encircled with Mayan designs and glyphs. As a bonus, take home your own recipe for spicy Mayan hot chocolate!
