a message from MICHAEL BALLAM Dear Friends, It has been my hope since the Festival was founded in 1993 to present West Side Story, one of the five mega-masterpieces of the American Lyric Stage, in the way it was envisioned by Leonard Bernstein. He imagined it with a philharmonic sound in the pit and the finest dancers, actors and musicians—the culmination of the best of everything in the art form of American Musical Theatre. Have you ever witnessed live, on stage, West Side Story given the kind of respect with which Lenny aspired? Unless you had the good fortune to visit the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City between September 26, 1957, and June 27, 1959, it is very unlikely. Until now. Here’s another question: How do you justify hiring 30 world-class dancers and 60 instrumentalists for just one of six shows performed in repertory? You can’t. You “imaginate” about how to use these amazing performers to their full extent without killing them off. So we looked to Walt Disney. What is his all-time favorite musical? Mary Poppins. What Disney film was made into a Broadway musical that took the world by storm in 2011? Newsies! Our glorious orchestra will bring to life the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You loved The Barber of Seville last summer. Now see the sequel and find out what became of Figaro, Count Almaviva and his Rosina in The Marriage of Figaro. How about having an intimate conversation with the greatest diva and divo of all time in the comfort and splendor of the Utah Theatre? Become a fly on the wall during the last appearances of Maria Callas and Enrico Caruso, the first rock-star celebrities of the operatic world. Turn back the clock and be part of Maria Callas’s Master Class at the Juilliard School in March 1972. Drop in for Enrico Caruso’s last performance at the Metropolitan Opera and in life where the adoring but frightened audience shouted Bravo, Caruso! There has never been a season like this— let’s triumph with some toetapping terpsichore!

MARY POPPINS

SYNOPSIS ACT I Bert, a man of many trades, informs us that something big is about to happen to the Banks family. At No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane, Jane and Michael Banks are constantly misbehaving, and Katie Nanna – the latest in a long line of nannies – has had enough (“Cherry Tree Lane”). She leaves and George Banks asks his wife, Winifred, to place an advertisement in the newspaper for a new nanny, but the children decide to write their own ad (“The Perfect Nanny”). Mary Poppins arrives and fits the children’s requirements exactly (“Practically Perfect”). Mary Poppins takes the children to the park, where they meet Bert, who is creating his latest works of art. Bored with the park and wary of Bert’s scrappy appearance, the children try to escape, but Mary urges them to see the magic in everyday life. Then the park bursts into brilliant colors as the statues come to life and dance with them (“Jolly Holiday”). As Mary Poppins begins to win over the children, George informs Winifred that they must maintain order and convention. Winifred feels that she is disappointing both her husband and children, struggling to understand her role within the family... and within the world (“Let’s Hope She Will Stay”). The household prepares for Mrs. Banks’ party (“A Spoonful of Sugar”) but even with a dose of magic from Mary Poppins, no one shows up. Mrs. Banks is left feeling more lost than ever. Mary Poppins takes Jane and Michael on a trip to visit their father at the bank where he works (“Precision and Order”). There, George has a choice: to give a loan to Herr Von Hussler, a businessman with a dubious money-making scheme, or to John Northbrook, who presents a solid plan for a factory that would help many, but offers little collateral. An innocent question from Jane prompts George to remember the ideals and values he once held (“A Man Has Dreams”). He decides to take a chance on Mr. Northbrook and gives him the loan. On the way home from the bank, the children and Mary Poppins run into the Bird Woman, who is feeding the birds in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Jane is still worried about outer appearances and shuns her, but Michael gives the Bird Woman money (“Feed the Birds”).

Mary Poppins, Jane, Michael and Bert meet Mrs. Corry, the mysterious owner of an unusual “talking shop,” where people purchase words along with gingerbread. The children are surprised to hear that, when their father was a boy, he came to this shop to enjoy its magic and spirit of invention (“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”). Things begin to go very wrong for George. Von Hussler goes to another bank and makes millions, and George is blamed for passing on the deal and is suspended without pay. In his stress, George yells at the children. In turn, an angry Jane and Michael fight over their toys, which magically come to life to teach them a lesson (“Playing the Game”). Recognizing the children are not yet ready for the lessons she has to teach them, Mary says goodbye to Bert (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”), leaving a note that reads, “au revoir,” or “till we meet again.”

ACT II The fall has turned to winter. The house is bustling again because a nanny is returning to No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane. However, it’s not the much-missed Mary Poppins, but Miss Andrew, who raised George. Miss Andrew is a harsh woman who believes that children should be punished on a regular basis with a horrible-tasting medicine (“Brimstone and Treacle”). In a panic, the children escape the house and run to the park where they meet Bert, who explains that the cure for every ill can be found at the end of a kite string (“Let’s Go Fly a Kite”). Their kite flies up into the London sky and, when it comes back down, Mary Poppins is with it. George has also been hiding from Miss Andrew (“Good for Nothing”). With her entire family missing,

MARY POPPINS Winifred worries that she is to blame, but resolves to assert herself and fight harder for the people she loves (“Being Mrs. Banks”). Mary returns home with the children and defeats Miss Andrew in an epic battle of wits and will. George returns, relieved to find that Miss Andrew has left, but still anxious about supporting his family. Winifred reminds him he can count on her and the children to stick by him. Whisked up to the rooftops, Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael meet Bert and his fellow chimney sweeps (“Step in Time”). The sweeps dance across the rooftops of London and into the Bankses’ house, wishing good luck to George and shaking his hand as they go. The Bank Chairman asks to see George immediately. George fears the worst, but Bert reminds him that his family is more important that his ambitions (“A Man Has Dreams – Reprise / A Spoonful of Sugar – Reprise”). George leaves for the bank as Winifred wishes that she could go with him. Mary Poppins and the children encourage her to do what she believes is right (“Anything Can Happen”). In front of the bank’s board of directors, George launches into a defense of his actions before they can tell him that he was right all along: Von Hussler’s scheme has fallen through, and the competing bank that approved his loan has been ruined. Northbrook’s business, on the other hand, is thriving and earning a healthy profit. Winifred shows up, ready to defend her husband, but, when she finds the board is promoting him, she negotiates his raise for him. George announces that, from now on, his family comes first. As George and Winifred walk along the streets of London, Mary Poppins takes Jane and Michael on one more magical adventure – this time, through the heavens. Her job done, Mary Poppins says her goodbyes and flies off to her next task. Although the Banks family is sad to see her go, they are glad that they have finally found one another.

NEWSIES SYNOPSIS ACT I

As Jack Kelly is savoring the last few moments of quiet before the sun rises, he shares with his best friend Crutchie his rooftop view of the city and his dream for a better life out West (“Santa Fe - Prologue”). At dawn, the newsies sing about their life and their work (“Carrying the Banner”), introducing this ramshackle group of young friends. They make their way to the distribution window for the World, where they pick up their daily stacks of papers to sell from Weisel, who runs the window, and Morris and Oscar Delancey, goons who work for the World. Davey and Les, brothers trying to earn money for their family, meet the newsies and try to learn the ropes. Jack agrees to partner with the boys since Les’s young age will help him sell more papers, although Davey is skeptical. Meanwhile, Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the World, expresses displeasure at the declining sales of his newspaper and vows to increase profits (“The Bottom Line”), even at the expense of the newsies. At the end of the day, it’s clear that Les is a natural newsie. Before Jack and
the brothers part ways, a man appears and chases Jack. Davey and Les follow Jack’s lead, running through the alleys of New York and finding safety in Medda’s Theater. Jack introduces them to Medda Larkin, one of the Bowery’s most famous performers. Jack explains that the man chasing them is named Snyder; he runs Refuge, an orphanage he keeps in squalid conditions and embezzles from. He’s had it out for Jack ever since he escaped. Medda offers her theater as a safe haven, and they stay to watch her perform (“That’s Rich”). During Medda’s performance, Jack notices Katherine, a bright young reporter he had seen earlier that day. A smitten Jack makes several attempts to flirt with her, but Katherine, quick-witted and ever-professional, cleverly rebuffs him. While the Bowery Beauties perform their routine, Jack resorts to sketching a portrait of Katherine (“I Never Planned on You / Don’t Come a-Knockin’”), and leaves it for her to find. The next day, as the newsies gather at the distribution window, the boys are outraged to learn that

Pulitzer has increased their price for newspapers - they can barely afford to eat as it is! Prompted by Davey, the newsies decide to form a union and strike (“The World Will Know”). After a successful first day of striking, newly elected union leader Jack Kelly assigns some kids to spread the word to newsies in other boroughs. Katherine arrives, hoping the newsies will give her an exclusive for the Sun. Jack tells her to be at the distribution window the next morning; not only will the newsies prevent others from selling papers, but they plan to stop the delivery carts as well. He tells her they all have a lot riding on her reporting skills, and Katherine gets to work writing her breakout article (“Watch What Happens”). The next day, Jack arrives to find that only a few kids have assembled to strike. He urges Davey to convince the small group not to back down. When scabs arrive to take the newsies’ place, Jack asks them to stand in solidarity with all the city’s exploited working children. The scabs throw down their papers, just in time for Katherine and her photographer to snap a victorious photo (“Seize the Day”). But soon the newsies engage in a fierce fight with the Delanceys, Weisel and the police. Snyder scares Jack away, but not before he watches the Delanceys take down Crutchie and carry him off to Refuge. Reaching the temporary safety of his rooftop, Jack paces, feeling guilty about leading the kids into danger. He looks out over the city and longs to escape (“Santa Fe”).

ACT II Battered and bruised, the newsies lament the previous day’s events at Jacobi’s Deli. Amid rumors that Jack was captured, several newsies wonder where he is. Katherine arrives with a copy of the story she published in the Sun, complete with a front-page picture of the newsies. Ecstatically, they thank her and celebrate their - and Katherine’s - fame (“King of New York”). Meanwhile, Crutchie writes a letter to Jack from Refuge expressing that he feels no ill will toward Jack and urging the newsies to stick together (“Letter from Refuge”). Davey, Les and Katherine find Jack back at Medda’s Theater and try to convince him to come back to the fight. Jack refuses, saying they can’t win against a man as powerful as Pulitzer. The three convince Jack that theirs is a fight worth fighting (“Watch What Happens - Reprise”); Jack finally agrees, and the kids plan a rally.

Discovering Katherine’s story, Pulitzer furiously resolves to take down Jack. Just then, a cocky Jack arrives to announce the newsies’ rally. Pulitzer assures Jack that no paper will cover it - and if it’s not in the press, it never happened. He then reveals Katherine, exposing her as his daughter, and Snyder, who emerges from the shadows. Pulitzer offers Jack a choice: get sent to The Refuge or renounce the strike and leave New York with pockets full of cash. The Delanceys escort Jack to the cellar, where an old printing press rests, to ponder his decision (“The Bottom Line - Reprise”). That evening, Brooklyn newsies cross the bridge with Spot Conlon, their leader, to join newsies from every borough at Medda’s theater for the rally (“Brooklyn’s Here”). Davey gives an inspiring speech, riling up the newsies about their progress. However, Jack appears and tells them to go back to work because they are no match for Pulitzer. Jack accepts his payoff money at the door and exits quickly. On his rooftop, Jack finds Katherine looking through his drawings of Refuge’s bleak conditions. He snatches them from her and they argue fiercely until she kisses him. Katherine shares her plan to have the newsies distribute an article that quotes Jack on the exploitation of working kids and calls for a citywide strike. Before heading to the old printing press Jack recently discovered, they share their hope in each other (“Something to Believe In”). With the help of Katherine and her well-connected friends, Darcy and Bill, the newsies sneak into Pulitzer’s cellar to print their paper (“Once and for All”). The kids distribute the pamphlet all over the city. Pulitzer’s office is flooded with angry calls from every corner of
New York. Having read the Newsies Banner, Pulitzer is furious at the kids’ attempt to thwart him. Jack, Davey and Spot show
up (“Seize the Day - Reprise”) to personally deliver the news and say the kids are willing to make a compromise. Pulitzer refuses to back down until Governor Roosevelt appears with Katherine and Jack’s drawings of Refuge. Alone, Jack and Pulitzer come to an agreement they can both live with - the price increase is reduced by half, and publishers will buy back any unsold papers. The strike is over! Outside, Jack announces the end of the strike. Crutchie appears amid the jubilation, followed by a handcuffed Snyder. Despite his dreams for Santa Fe, Jack realizes the newsies are his family and Katherine gives him something to believe in - so he’s staying put for now (“Finale Ultimo”).

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO SYNOPSIS ACT I Figaro, servant to Count Almaviva, happily measures the space where the bridal bed will fit, while Susanna, the Countess’s maid, finishes her bridal hat. Figaro is quite pleased with the room, but Susanna less so, given that the room is so near to the Count’s chamber. She explains to Figaro that the Count is pursuing her. The Countess rings for Susanna, and Figaro, confident in his own resourcefulness, vows to outwit the Count. Figaro departs, and Doctor Bartolo enters with Marcellina. Figaro had previously borrowed a large sum of money from her, and, as collateral, promised to marry her if unable to repay at the appointed time. Marcellina now intends to enforce that promise by suing him. Bartolo, seeking revenge against Figaro for having facilitated the union of the Count and Countess (Rosina in The Barber of Seville)agrees to represent Marcellina pro bono, and assures her he can win the case. Bartolo departs, Susanna returns and Marcellina and Susanna exchange politely delivered insults. Cherubino then arrives and, after describing his emerging infatuation with all women- particularly with his “beautiful godmother” the Countess - asks for Susanna’s aid with the Count. It seems the Count plans to punish Cherubino because of his amorous ways, having discovered him with the gardener’s daughter, Barbarina. Before Susanna can offer advice, they are interrupted by the arrival of Count Almaviva himself. Cherubino hides while Almaviva attempts to set up a tryst with Susanna. The Count is also forced to hide when Don Basilio, the music teacher, arrives. Basilio starts to gossip about Cherubino’s obvious attraction to the Countess, which forces the Count to leap from his hiding place. The Count states that he is sending Cherubino away, and while relating the story in the gardener’s daughter’s chambers, reveals a hidden Cherubino. Realizing that Cherubino has overheard him propositioning Susanna, the Count assigns Cherubino a military commission, thus getting rid of him. Figaro returns, accompanied by other servants and townspeople, in a preemptive attempt to commit the Count to a formal gesture symbolizing his promise that Susanna would enter into the marriage unsullied. Almaviva stalls them. Learning of the military commission, Figaro gives Cherubino advice about his new military life.

ACT II In Countess Rosina’s chambers, the Countess grieves for the loss of her husband’s love and attention, and she and Susanna discuss Count Almaviva’s roving eye. The Countess believes her husband no longer loves her, while Susanna wants him to leave her alone. Susanna tells the Countess that she and Figaro have a plan: Almaviva will receive a letter, written by Figaro and delivered by Basilio, informing him that his wife has taken up a lover. At the same time, Susanna will set up a rendezvous with Almaviva, but will send a disguised Cherubino in her place. Cherubino enters with a song of love for the Countess and a commission letter that the Count forgot to seal. Susannah and the Couness dress him as a woman. Having locked the door, Cherubino has time to hide when the Count unexpectedly arrives to speak with his wife about the letter from Basilio. Noticing the Countess’s agitation, Almaviva is instantly suspicious. He demands entry into the locked inner room where Cherubino is hiding, but the Countess refuses to open it, claiming Susanna is inside trying on her wedding dress. Almaviva, taking the Countess with him, leaves the room to get a tool to open the inner room. Once they’ve departed, Cherubino exits the Countess’s chamber through the window and Susanna hides herself in the inner room. Unaware of the switch, the Countess confesses everything to her husband upon their return. She is shocked when Susanna exits the locked room. Almaviva is duped, and begs forgiveness for his suspicions. Figaro arrives to gather up the group for the wedding. He is followed by Antonio, the gardener, who is upset that someone jumping from the Countess’s balcony has crushed his flowers. Upon prompting from the women, Figaro claims it was he who jumped. The gardener shows him Cherubino’s dropped commission, which Figaro claims he was holding to get the Count’s seal. Marcellina, Bartolo and Basilio enter, and Almaviva, still suspicious, hears their claim that Figaro is obliged to marry Marcellina to pay off an outstanding debt.

ACT III The Count mulls over the confusing situation. At the urging of the Countess, Susanna enters and gives a false promise to meet the Count later that night in the garden. As Susanna leaves, the Count overhears her telling Figaro that he has already won the case. Realizing that he is being duped, the Count resolves to punish Figaro by forcing him to marry Marcellina. Figaro’s hearing follows. Figaro argues that he cannot marry Marcellina without his parents’ permission, and that he does not know who his parents are because he was stolen from them when he was a baby. The ensuing discussion reveals that Figaro is Rafaello, the long-lost illegitimate son of Bartolo and Marcellina. During the scene of reconciliation, Susanna rejoins the crowd. She misunderstands and rages at Figaro. Marcellina explains the situation, and realizing her mistake, Susanna joins the celebration. Bartolo, overcome with emotion, agrees to marry Marcellina that evening in a double wedding. The Countess, alone, ponders the loss of her happiness. Meanwhile, Antonio informs the Count that Cherubino is not in Seville, but in fact at his house. Susanna updates her mistress regarding the plan to trap the Count. The Countess dictates a love letter for Susanna to send to the Count, which suggests that he meet her (Susanna) that night, “under the pines.” The letter instructs the Count to return the pin that fastens the letter. A chorus of women, including Cherubino disguised as a girl, arrives to serenade the Countess. The Count bursts in with Antonio and, unmasking Cherubino, is enraged. His anger is quickly dispelled by Barbarina, who publicly recalls that he had once offered to give her anything she wants in exchange for certain favors. Barbarina asks for Cherubino. Thoroughly embarrassed, the Count allows Cherubino to stay. The act closes with the double wedding, during the course of which Susanna delivers her letter to the Count. Figaro watches the Count prick his finger on the pin and laughs, unaware that the lovenote is an invitation for the Count to tryst with Figaro’s own Susanna. As the curtain drops, the two newlywed couples rejoice.

ACT IV In the garden, Figaro meets the gardener’s daughter, Barbarina who is looking for a lost pin - the pin Almaviva had entrusted her to return to Susanna. Figaro recognizes the pin to be the one that fastened the letter to the Count. Thinking Susanna is meeting the Count behind his back, Figaro complains to his mother and swears to be avenged. Marcellina urges caution, but Figaro rushes off and Marcellina resolves to inform Susanna of Figaro’s intentions. Marcellina laments that male and female wild beasts get along with each other, but rational humans can’t. Figaro returns and muses on the inconstancy of women. Susanna and the Countess arrive, each dressed in the other’s clothes. Marcellina is with them, having informed Susanna of Figaro’s suspicions and plans. After they discuss their plan, Marcellina and the Countess leave, and Susanna, realizing that Figaro is hidden nearby, teases Figaro by singing a love song to her beloved. Figaro, thinking the song is for the Count, becomes increasingly jealous. The Count appears, declares his love for Susanna, who is really the disguised Countess, while Figaro tells the Countess, who is really Susanna, about the tryst. Susanna forgets to disguise her voice, and Figaro figures out it is she under the Countess’s cloak. Their embrace is noticed by the Count, who is about to expose them when his wife takes off her own disguise. Almaviva is shamed and apologizes to his wife for both his jealousy and his infidelity. All is forgiven and everyone is content.

SYNOPSIS Christmas Eve, 1920 in Enrico Caruso’s dressing room at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Caruso’s faithful valet, Mario, is bustling about the dressing room in preparation for the evening’s performance and anxiously awaiting Caruso’s arrival from his most recent visit to the doctor. Caruso is tackling his latest (and, the audience knows, his final) role. This role is of a Jewish rabbi in the French opera, La Juive. The evening is less about the music and more about the man, his art and his relationships. The audience members become reporters conducting a private interview in the dressing room of the greatest tenor in history. Through this process, we learn a great deal about the man behind the legend Caruso’s strengths and foibles are on display, interspersed with an endless stream of amusing anecdotes and clownish antics. Despite Caruso’s occasional quirks and tantrums, Mario, Caruso’s valet, is the model of efficiency, diplomacy and loyalty. We see the relationship between a man and his devoted servant on display throughout the evening. The audience is invited into Caruso’s past, present and looming future. At this point in Caruso’s career, he is profoundly drawn to his past, specifically feeling a pull to Naples, Mount Vesuvius and his childhood experiences. We can almost envision him as a small boy playing in this bucolic village. Caruso, ever the entertainer, also reveals the glamorous, wacky world of grand opera through his anecdotes. And, though Caruso shares the intimacy of backstage confidences and diverting repartee with the audience, the unseen tragedy of Caruso becomes clear. Caruso, like Pagliaggio, must perform in the midst of anguish. The people have paid, and they want to laugh. Ultimately, the play begs the question, “What is one willing to sacrifice for their art?” “I suffer so much in this life. That is what they [the audience] are feeling when I sing, that is why they cry. People who felt nothing in this life cannot sing.” – Enrico Caruso

oh BEHAVE Utah Festival Etiquette and Policies We want every guest to have the best time ever. To make sure we’re one big happy family, please obey these golden rules: 1. No crinkling. We know those hidden Bluebird chocolates are calling your name, but please don’t open the bag during the performance. If you might possibly need a lozenge, breath mint, or whatever, please unwrap it before the show begins. 2. Cell phones. Please turn them off. Even on silent, they will interfere with the sound system. 3. Texting. Your phone does not possess secret powers that make the screen invisible to everyone but you. Please don’t annoy or distract your neighbors. Feel free to tweet the universe about your amazing Utah Festival experience, but please do it during intermission or after the show. 4. Talking. This theatre has amazing acoustics and 1,106 other people can hear every word you say. The performance begins when the music starts, not when the curtain goes up. Show the orchestra some love—the overture is their time to shine. 5. Kids. We love them, but babes-in-arms and children under 5 are not allowed. This stuff is just too cool for them. Also, take your other youngsters (or spouse, etc.) out if they disturb the peace. 6. Tardiness. We’d love to hold the curtain for you, but if you’re late, we will seat you at intermission or at the first appropriate interval. In the meantime, relax and watch the show on the TV in the lobby, which is better than missing the whole thing. Policies: Boring but Necessary Backstage. Don’t go backstage, on stage or in the theatre annex. Blankets. You might want to dress in layers in case you are seated under a vent. Light blankets

are available free of charge on a first-come basis in the theatre lobby. Cameras and Recorders. Both are strictly prohibited without written permission. Exchange Policy. Tickets may be exchanged at least 48 hours in advance for another performance of the same production. No exchanges for a different production or if the performance date has passed. Exchanges are free for series subscribers; non-subscribers pay $2 per ticket. Free Parking is available at Logan High School (on 100 South between 100 and 200 West) and on the corner of Center Street and 100 West. Greet the Artists. Meet our company members after each performance outside at the Café des Artistes, on the south side of the theatre (when you’re facing the stage, head out the left door). Hearing Devices. Borrow a sound enhancement headset free of charge on a first-come basis in the theatre lobby. Informances. Informal discussions take place in the theatre one hour before every performance. Learn plot and background details about each production. Refreshments. No refreshments are allowed in the theatre except bottled water, which you should be careful not to drop, slurp or slosh. Refund Policy. There are no refunds. Smoking. No smoking. Wheelchair Seating is available. When ordering tickets, please advise the box office that you have a wheelchair. Arrive 30 minutes before curtain time to obtain assistance from the House Manager. Easy access is on the south side of the theatre (out the left door if you’re inside facing the stage). Drop off by the Café des Artistes and head to your left between the mansion and the theatre. An usher will be waiting at the door to help you.
