The Magic FLUTE Act I

Synopsis

A mythical land between the sun and the moon. Three ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night save Prince Tamino from a terrible serpent. When the ladies leave to tell the Queen, the bird catcher Papageno appears. He boasts to Tamino that it was he who killed the creature. The ladies return to reprimand Papageno and to give Tamino a portrait of the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, who they claim has been enslaved by the evil Sarastro. Tamino immediately falls in love with Pamina’s image. The Queen of the Night appears, mourns the loss of her daughter to Tamino and commands him to rescue her. The ladies return to give a magic flute to Tamino and enchanted silver bells to Papageno and appoint three spirits to guide them in their quest. Sarastro’s slave Monostatos pursues Pamina but is frightened away by Papageno. Papageno tells Pamina that Tamino loves her and is on his way to save her. Meanwhile, Tamino arrives at Sarastro’s temple and meets the speaker who reveals that perhaps it is the Queen, not Sarastro, who is malicious. Hearing that Pamina is safe, Tamino charms wild animals with his flute and rushes off to follow the sound of Papageno’s pipes. Monostatos and his guards chase Papageno and Pamina but are left helpless when Papageno plays his enchanted bells. Papageno and Pamina arrive at Sarastro’s temple where Sarastro punishes Monostatos and promises Pamina that he will eventually set her free. Sarastro tells his priests that Tamino and Papageno will undergo initiation rites and they are led off to begin their first trial. Act II Inside the temple Sarastro and his priests prepare the initiation rites for Tamino and Papageno. Tamino and Papageno are told by the priests that they must remain silent and are not allowed to eat. The three ladies appear and assert their power to make Tamino and Papageno break their vows. Tamino holds steadfast, however Papageno almost immediately breaks both vows when he cannot remain silent and he takes some water from a mysterious old lady. When he asks her name, the old lady vanishes. The three spirits reappear to guide Tamino through the rest of his journey and to warn Papageno to be quiet. Tamino remains silent even when Pamina appears to confess her love. Misunderstanding his silence for coldness, Pamina leaves devastated. Monostatos, who has escaped, tries once again to seduce Pamina but is thwarted when the Queen of the Night appears. The Queen gives her daughter Pamina her dagger and orders her to murder Sarastro. Sarastro finds the desperate Pamina and consoles her, explaining that he is not interested in vengeance. The priests inform Tamino that he has only two more trials to complete his initiation. Papageno, who has given up on entering the brotherhood, longs for a wife instead. After a psychedelic dream sequence instigated by mystical wine, Papageno eventually settles

The Magic FLUTE for the mysterious old lady. When he promises to be faithful, the old woman transforms into a beautiful young Papagena but once again immediately disappears. A heartbroken Pamina contemplates ending her life but the three spirits intervene and save her. Pamina and Tamino are reunited and face the ordeals of water and fire together, protected by the magic flute. Without his beloved Papagena, Papageno threatens to hang himself on a “tree” but is saved by the three spirits, who remind him that if he uses his enchanted bells he will find true happiness. When he plays the bells, Papagena appears and the two start making family plans. The Queen of the Night, her three ladies, and Monostatos arrive at the temple and plot their attack but are defeated and banished. Sarastro blesses Pamina and Tamino as all join in hailing enlightenment and the triumph of courage, virtue and wisdom.

Joseph and THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR dreamcoat Synopsis Act I A Narrator introduces Joseph, a dreamer who is favored by his father Jacob over his brothers. Jacob gives Joseph a multi-colored coat to show his affection, which causes a stir among the brothers. Joseph dreams he is destined to rule over them, so they’ve had just about enough of that. They decide to sell him as a slave into Egypt. The Narrator comments on how powerless Joseph is. The brothers hide what they’ve done by ripping Joseph’s coat and covering it in goat’s blood implying Joseph has been killed. Jacob is devasted . Joseph arrives in Egypt and is sold to the wealthy Potipher. Because of his excellent work ethic, he is soon promoted. He has caught the eye of Potipher’s wife, and even though he rebukes her advances, Potipher is angered and throws Joseph in jail. While in jail, Joseph interprets the strange dreams of his cell mates, a Butler and a Baker, who in turn encourage Joseph to follow his own dreams. Continued on next page

Joseph and THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR dreamcoat Act II The Pharoah is having crazy dreams of his own and nobody can interpret them. His Butler, fresh out of jail, tells the Pharoah of Joseph’s dream-interpreting skills. The Pharoah brings Joseph to his palace and learns that his dreams portend seven plentiful years followed by seven years of famine. The Pharoah puts Joseph in charge of preparing for the famine. Back home, Joseph’s father and brothers have fallen on tough times. Hearing that Egypt has food aplenty, they travel there to beg for supplies. They meet Joseph but don’t recognize him. Joseph gives them sacks of food but plants a valuable object in his brother Benjamin’s sack and then accuses him of theft. His brothers plead with him to let Benjamin go and to imprison them instead. Seeing that his brothers have changed, Joseph reveals who he is and sends for his father Jacob. They rejoice in a musical medley of family reunion.

CARMEN Synopsis

Act 1 In Seville, Spain by a cigarette factory, soldiers comment on the townspeople. Among them is Micaëla who asks for a corporal named Don José. Moralès, another corporal, tells her he will return with the changing of the guard. The relief guard, headed by Lieutenant Zuniga, soon arrives, and José learns from Moralès that Micaëla has been looking for him. When the factory bell rings, the men of Seville gather to watch the female workers—especially their favorite, Carmen. She tells her admirers that love is free and obeys no rules. Don José pays no attention to her. Carmen throws a flower at him and the girls go back to work. José picks up the flower and hides it when Micaëla returns. She brings a letter from José’s mother. José is about to throw away the flower when a fight erupts inside the factory between Carmen and another girl. Zuniga sends José to retrieve the gypsy. Carmen refuses to answer Zuniga’s questions, and José is ordered to take her to prison. Left alone with him, she entices José with suggestions of a rendezvous at Lillas Pastia’s tavern. Mesmerized, he agrees to let her get away. As they leave for prison, Carmen escapes. Don José is arrested. Continued on next page

CARMEN

Act II Carmen and her friends Frasquita and Mercédès entertain the guests at the tavern. Zuniga tells Carmen that José has just been released. The bullfighter Escamillo enters and flirts with Carmen, who tells him she is involved with someone else. After the tavern guests have left with Escamillo, the smugglers Dancaïre and Remendado explain their latest scheme to the women. Frasquita and Mercédès are willing to help, but Carmen refuses because she is in love. The smugglers withdraw as José approaches. Carmen arouses his jealousy by telling him how she danced for Zuniga. She dances for him now, but when a bugle call is heard he says he must return to the barracks. Carmen mocks him. To prove his love, José shows her the flower she threw at him and confesses how its scent gave him hope during the weeks in prison. She is unimpressed: If he really loved her, he would desert the army and join her in a life of freedom in the mountains. José refuses, and Carmen tells him to leave. Zuniga bursts in, and in a jealous rage José fights him. The smugglers return and disarm Zuniga. José now has no choice but to join them. Act III Carmen and José quarrel in the smugglers’ mountain hideaway. She admits that her love is fading and advises him to return to live with his mother. When Frasquita and Mercédès turn the cards to tell their fortunes, they foresee love and riches for themselves, but Carmen’s cards spell death—for her and for José. Micaëla appears, frightened by the mountains and afraid to meet the woman who has turned José into a criminal. She hides when a shot rings out. José has fired at an intruder, who turns out to be Escamillo. He tells José that he has come to find Carmen, and the two men fight. The smugglers separate them and Escamillo invites everyone, Carmen in particular, to his next bullfight. When he has left, Micaëla emerges and begs José to return home. He agrees when he learns that his mother is dying, but before he leaves he warns Carmen that they will meet again. Act IV Back in Seville, the crowd cheers the bullfighters on their way to the arena. Carmen arrives on Escamillo’s arm, and Frasquita and Mercédès warn her that José is nearby. Unafraid, she waits outside the entrance as the crowds enter the arena. José appears and begs Carmen to forget the past and start a new life with him. She calmly tells him their affair is over: She was born free and she will die free. The crowd is heard cheering Escamillo. José keeps trying to win Carmen back. She takes off his ring and throws it at his feet before heading for the arena. José stabs her to death.

The TENDER LAND Synopsis Act I Ma Moss and young daughter Beth prepare for older sister Laurie’s graduation party. The postman, Mr. Splinters, delivers a package containing Laurie’s graduation dress, along with the news that two strangers attacked a neighbor’s daughter. Mr. Splinters leaves, and a dreamy Laurie arrives home. Two drifters, Top and Martin, arrive at the Moss farm and meet Laurie. She is captivated by their stories of travel. After initial suspicion, Grandpa Moss agrees to hire the two to help with the harvest. Act 2 The graduation party is in full swing. As the dancing begins, Ma Moss confides in Mr. Splinters her suspicions that Top and Martin are the two strangers he’d mentioned. Mr. Splinters agrees to get the sheriff. As Laurie and Martin dance, they quickly fall in love and share a kiss. Seeing this, Grandpa Moss in enraged. Mr. Splinters returns with the news that the two strangers have already been caught. Top and Martin are innocent. Even so, Grandpa Moss insists the two leave in the morning. Act 3 Later that night, Laurie and Martin make plans to elope just before dawn. Top reminds Martin that their life won’t suit Laurie and Martin reluctantly concedes. Top and Martin sneak way. As planned, Laurie leaves to meet Martin, but discovers he is already gone. Devasted, Laurie realizes that though alone, it is time for her to leave. With difficulty Ma Moss accepts Laurie’s decision to leave. As Laurie walks away, Ma’s focus turns to Beth and the future of her remaining daughter.

Oh BEHAVE Utah Festival Etiquette and Policies We want every guest to have the best time ever. To make sure we’re one big happy family, please obey these golden rules: 1. No crinkling. We know those hidden Bluebird chocolates are calling your name, but please don’t open the bag during the performance. If you might possibly need a lozenge, breath mint, or whatever, please unwrap it before the show begins. 2. Cell phones. Please turn them off. Even on silent, they will interfere with the sound system. 3. Texting. Your phone does not possess secret powers that make the screen invisible to everyone but you. Please don’t annoy or distract your neighbors. Feel free to tweet the universe about your amazing Utah Festival experience, but please do it during intermission or after the show. 4. Talking. This theatre has amazing acoustics and 316 other people can hear every word you say. The performance begins when the music starts, not when the curtain goes up. Show the orchestra some love—the overture is their time to shine. 5. Kids. We love them, but babes-in-arms and children under 5 are not allowed. This stuff is just too cool for them. Also, take your other youngsters (or spouse, etc.) out if they disturb the peace. 6. Tardiness. We’d love to hold the curtain for you, but if you’re late, we will seat you at intermission or at the first appropriate interval. In the meantime, relax and watch the show on the TV in the lobby, which is better than missing the whole thing.
