A Message from Michael Ballam
Not since 1958, when the curtain fell on a production of CARMEN, had Capitol Theatre stage welcomed any live performances. A mighty wall sealed off the stage, dressing rooms, greenroom and orchestra pit altering the destiny of the opera house built by G.W. Thatcher relegating it to a run-down movie house.
While the heated and rancorous debate determining whether Logan City would stay her execution by demolition drug on from March until May, GIANNI SCHICCHI was being rehearsed. At 5:00 PM on Thursday, 5 May 1988 the Logan City Council narrowly passed a resolution to accept the Capitol Theatre as a gift from Eugene Needham III and tasked me with renovating her to become the Ellen Eccles Theatre in 1993.
At 8:00 PM on 16 June 1988, the sleeping beauty awakened after a 30-year slumber. A full-house of expectant patrons were breathless to witness her rebirth. The tattered silver-blue grand drape rose to reveal the magnificent vista of Florence during the Renaissance, with Puccini’s only comedy GIANNI SCHICCHI
GIANNI SCHICCHI is a reminder of the glory of Florence, the Renaissance, the flourishing of art, the theatre and music made possible by the patronage of the Medici family and the populace of the golden city of Florence. The correlation was pointed, that if the theatre and the age of grand opera were to return to Logan, the inhabitants would need to become “Modern Medicis”.
GIANNI SCHICCHI held a very special spot in my heart having played the role of Betto di Signa at the age of 16 marking my debut into the realm of opera. Since that launching of my deep love for opera, and in particular Puccini, I have played Rinuccio a number of times and Schicchi frequently.
As a commission from the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, it premiered there in December as part of an evening of three one-act operas, IL TRITTICO, all dealing with death: IL TABARRO, SUOR ANGELICA and GIANNI SCHICCHI. Though it was Puccini’s wish that all three be performed together, it is seldom presented in that fashion. We produced the entire IL TRITTICO in 2016. Previously we presented GIANNI SCHICCHI on a double-bill with Leoncavallo’s I PAGLIACCI as it is often performed. This beloved opera has lived in my mind, throat and heart for 56 years and I am pleased to bring him back to life this season. It is paired with Michael Ching’s 1996 sequel BUOSO’S GHOST.
After 18 years on Broadway and 7,397, performances made CATS the longest running musical of all time to that point in history. It has been on our wish list for many seasons and finally we have been granted the difficult to obtain rights. It requires a large company of extraordinary dances. Many in our cast have played in it on Broadway and national tours. To maximize the talent pool of phenomenal dancers, we have chosen two more block-buster dance musicals: GUYS AND DOLLS and ANYTHING GOES.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is the highest-grossing Off-Broadway production in history. Reprising their roles of Audrey and Seymour are real-life spouses Vanessa Ballam and Stefan Espinosa. The intimate humor of this hallmark work is ideal for our jewel, the Utah Theatre.
We hope our 2024 season will be enjoyable and long-remembered!

Anything Goes
SYNOPSIS
Nothing is quite as pleasing as the age old tale of boy meets girl and the inevitable complications that are bound to ensue. This wonderful piece tells that very story, wrapped up in the beautiful music of Cole Porter. Our hero and heroine, Billy Crocker and Hope Harcourt meet one night and at party in New York City. Afterwards they spend the rest evening together and watch sunrise discussing what their future might be, only to never see each other again.
This is the background for the excitement that starts at the New York sailing of the “SS America” bound for England. To ensure an exciting voyage for all the passengers on the ship, Reno Sweeney, famed evangelist, is on board with her four delightful “Angels” who will be “saving sinners twice a night in the ships lounge”.
Our hero, Billy, arrives on board the ship before it sets sail to deliver a passport to his boss, Eli Whitney, when he discovers that Hope Harcourt, the young lady he met at the party, is also on board. Much to Billy’s dismay he learns that Hope is engaged to be married to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. With the help of two questionable characters, Moonface Martin “Public Enemy number 13” and his cohort in crime Erma, Billy decides to stow away on the ship to pursue his true love, Hope.
Billy’s plan to stay in hiding is somewhat thwarted when reunited with his friend, and former romantic interest, Reno Sweeney. Love is certainly in the air aboard the “SS America” as Billy continues to search out Hope using clever disguises, while Hopes mother, Evangeline Harcourt, is reacquainted with her old fling and Billy’s boss, Eli Whitney, and Erma, Moonface Martin’s sidekick, chases every sailor aboard. Even Reno herself finds a soft spot in her heart for Hopes fiancé, Lord Evelyn Oakliegh.
Add to the mix a frantic ships captain, a persistent Purser, four tap dancing sailors, and rumors that Snake Eyes Johnson, “Public Enemy number 1” is on board, chaos and hilarity are bound to ensue. It’s a wonder that all the romances are sorted out and disaster is averted. Indeed, they are aboard a magical ship where ANYTHING GOES!

GIANNI SCHICCHI SYNOPSIS
Florence, 1299.
Wealthy Buoso Donati has died. At his bedside are his cousins Zita and Simone, Zita’s nephew Rinuccio, Buoso’s nephew Gherardo and his wife Nella and son Gherardino, Simone’s son Marco and his wife La Chiesca, and Buoso’s brotherIn-Law Betto. Although they appear grief-stricken, they are more interested in learning the contents of Buoso’s will.
Betto repeats a rumor that Buoso left everything to a monastery. Highly concerned, the family members franticly search for the will. Rinuccio finds the document but withholds it until he receives assurance he’ll be allowed to marry Lauretta, daughter of the peasant Gianni Schicchi. A happy Rinuccio sends Gherardino to fetch Schicchi and Lauretta.
The will confirms the relatives’ worst fears. Buoso has indeed bequeathed his fortune to the monastery. Rinuccio suggests that Gianni Schicchi can advise them, but the idea is scorned. Schicchi and Lauretta arrive. Schicchi quickly grasps the situation but refuses to help the greedy family. Lauretta begs her father, and he finally agrees to look at the will. Scrutinizing it, Schicchi arrives at a plan.
Spinelloccio, Buoso’s doctor, arrives. Concealed behind the bed curtains, Schicchi mimics Buoso’s voice and declares that he is feeling better. Once the satisfied doctor departs, Schicchi unveils his plan to the family; he will disguise himself as Buoso and dictate a new will. All are delighted with the scheme.
The lawyer arrives, and Schicchi begins dictating the new will. To general satisfaction, he allocates the minor bequests, but when it comes to the coveted mule, house, and the sawmills at Signa, he orders that these be left to “my devoted friend Gianni Schicchi”. Incredulous, the family can do nothing while the lawyer is present. Once the lawyer leaves, their outrage is accompanied by a frenzy of looting as Schicchi chases them out of what is now his house.
Meanwhile, Lauretta and Rinuccio rejoice that they can finally be married. Schicchi returns and is moved the sight of the lovers.
Gianni Schicchi / Buoso’s Ghost
BUOSO’S GHOST - A SEQUEL TO GIANNI SCHICCHI
Florence, 1299, later that same day.
Schicchi sends Lauretta and Rinuccio to the Porta Rossa to purchase a wedding ring.
Alone, he contemplates his new world, and decides to enjoy the food left for Buoso by the relatives. Schicchi discovers that the food has been poisoned.
Two friars interrupt him, asking for their inheritance from Buoso. Schicchi shows them the revised will, gives them their inheritance and they leave.
Alone once again, Schicchi imagines the relatives making their plans to poison Buoso.
His reverie is interrupted by a crack of thunder. A storm is brewing. Schicchi hears the relatives arriving, and hastily writes a note which he stuffs into Buoso’s nightshirt.
The angry relatives arrive, ready to beat Schicchi but they are interrupted by the arrival of the Magistrate and his guards. The relatives immediately assume airs of mourning and accuse Schicchi of murdering Buoso. While beseeching each of them for mercy, Schicchi secretly reveals that he knows about the poison. Stunned, the relatives switch gears. Each now promise Schicchi their inheritance if Schicchi will blame someone else.
The Magistrate asks Simone to make the official accusation, expecting to name Schicchi the murderer. Simone withdraws his accusation. The Magistrate himself makes the accusation. Schicchi declares his innocence, and while recounting his version of the events ‘discovers’ the note he’d planted on Buoso. It is Buoso’s suicide note. Cleared of the murder charge, Schicchi sees the Magistrate and his guards out.
The family, incensed that they have been tricked again, plot to kill Schicchi.
Schicchi, having snuck back into the room, uses the storm’s ferocity to finally rid himself of the greedy family.

Utah Festival Etiquette and Policies
We want every guest to have the best time ever. To make sure we’re one big happy family, please obey these golden rules:
1. No crinkling. We know those hidden Bluebird chocolates are calling your name, but please don’t open the bag during the performance. If you might possibly need a lozenge, breath mint, or whatever, please unwrap it before the show begins.
2. Cell phones. Please turn them off. Even on silent, they will interfere with the sound system.
3. Texting. Your phone does not possess secret powers that make the screen invisible to everyone but you. Please don’t annoy or distract your neighbors. Feel free to tweet the universe about your amazing Utah Festival experience, but please do it during intermission or after the show.
4. Talking. This theatre has amazing acoustics and 316 other people can hear every word you say. The performance begins when the music starts, not when the curtain goes up. Show the orchestra some love—the overture is their time to shine.
5. Kids. We love them, but babes-in-arms and children under 5 are not allowed. This stuff is just too cool for them. Also, take your other youngsters (or spouse, etc.) out if they disturb the peace.
6. Tardiness. We’d love to hold the curtain for you, but if you’re late, we will seat you at intermission or at the first appropriate interval. In the meantime, relax and watch the show on the TV in the lobby, which is better than missing the whole thing.
Policies: Boring but Necessary
Backstage. Don’t go backstage, or on stage. Cameras and Recorders. Both are strictly prohibited without written permission.
Exchange Policy. Tickets may be exchanged at least 48 hours in advance for another performance of the same production. No exchanges for a different production or if the performance date has passed.
Free Parking is available at Logan High School (on 100 South between 100 and 200 West) and on the corner of Center Street and 100 West.
Greet the Artists. Meet our company members after each performance outside at the Café des Artistes, on the south side of the theatre (when you’re facing the stage, head out the left door).
Hearing Devices. Borrow a sound enhancement headset free of charge on a firstcome basis in the theatre lobby.
Informances. Informal discussions take place in the theatre one hour before every performance. Learn plot and background details about each production.
Refund Policy. There are no refunds.
Smoking. No smoking.
Wheelchair Seating is available. When ordering tickets, please advise the box office that you have a wheelchair. Arrive 30 minutes before curtain time to obtain assistance from the House Manager.
