About the Show Credits

CARMEN Inside Out is a new interactive-one-woman show created and performed by Kirstin Chávez, internationally renowned mezzo soprano and Carmen specialist. Tonight, she is joined by esteemed pianist and composer, Professor Jeffrey Price in the first performance of the 2018/2019 season. After a successful UK and US tour in 2017, CARMEN Inside Out is embarking on a World Tour in 2019 with performances in the US, Europe, and Asia and supported in part by a grant from the University of Utah. Born from a desire to share Carmen’s passion and to inspire others with her lust for life, this unique musical and theatrical experience is breaking new ground for communities by providing a new way to experience one of the most intense musical encounters. We first encounter Carmen after her fatal confrontation with her lover, Don Jose: murdered, on the brink of the afterlife. But before her spirit finds rest, she recounts and illuminates the true inner-story of her life with us through spoken monologues, choreographed Flamenco dance, and Bizet’s celebrated opera score. At the heart of this project is audience interaction and connection: an intense face-to-face encounter with Carmen’s smoldering charisma provoking people of all backgrounds to not only listen, but to interact, reflect, respond, and strive to better themselves and their communities. Following each performance, we invite the audience to join the artists and a panel of esteemed selected community leaders in a “Conversation Space” of reflection and commentary about the performance experience. Please stay after and join the thought-provoking conversation to share ideas on women’s rights, the value of strong women in our modern society, and how communities can nurture the spirits of young women around the globe. The “TED Talk of opera,” you will experience Carmen like never before: Inside and OUT! Create art. Inspire change. Open conversation. Videography for this performance is supported in part by Utah Arts & Museums, with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts. Credits: Artistic Direction: Johnathon Pape Orchestration/Piano Score: Jeffrey Price Choreography: Sol Koeraus ‘La Argentinita’ Spanish Text/Coach: Pablo Zinger French Text: Pierre Maurice Barlier Videography: Matthew Lima, www.mattlimafilms.com

Kirstin Chávez began her professional operatic career in 1999

after having completed a Bachelor of Music degree at New Mexico State University, a Master of Music degree and Performer’s Certificate at the Eastman School of Music, and two years of young artist programs with the Brevard Music Center, the Orlando Opera, and the Santa Fe Opera. Since 1999, Kirstin has performed numerous opera roles and countless concerts in countries throughout the world, including Canada, Mexico, the USA, France, Germany, England, Wales, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Australia. Although Kirstin is well known for her interpretations of many modern roles in contemporary operas and also for her delivery of various well-known pants roles such as Orfeo from Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Eurydice and Octavian from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, she is best known the world over as a premier interpreter of the role of Carmen from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen. Over a 20year period Kirstin has prepared and perfected this challenging operatic role, which, in addition to demanding that she achieve the highest levels of vocal and dramatic performance, has also necessitated her becoming fluent in the French language, proficient at playing the castanets, and dancing in the flamenco style. Now, Kirstin is accepted as one of the foremost experts in this role, having performed it around the world in upwards of 35 different productions and hundreds of performances. During her years of preparation and performance, Kirstin has had the opportunity to work with other celebrated experts including: well-known flamenco dancers who have either choreographed Carmen productions or taught Kirstin privately; worldclass conductors and stage directors with expertise in the French Romantic operatic style; and numerous French coaches known for their mastery of French diction and the French singing style. After two decades of working to master this iconic character with the help of some of the foremost experts in the business, Kirstin is sought after, not only to continue to bring her Carmen to productions around the world, but also to teach her Carmen to a new generation of opera singers.

Jeffrey Price is a professor of piano and opera at the University of Utah. He

began competing and performing at a young age. He has appeared as a soloist with the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony, the Utah Youth Symphony, the Paradigm Orchestra, and the Utah Philharmonia. During a versatile and multifaceted career, he has been extremely active as a pianist, coach, accompanist, soloist, chamber musician, conductor and musical director, (for opera, musical theater, and dance), as well as composing. As a pianist he has performed in solo and chamber recitals, as well as in collaboration with many top opera singers, in performances in many parts of the United States and Europe. He had spent thirteen summers in Italy teaching and musically directing operas with American students. He recently passed the eighty percent mark in his unreasonably ambitious project: to learn, and then record, the entire cycle of Scriabin sonatas. UTAHPRESENTS.ORG

MONICA BILL BARNES: “HAPPY HOUR” September 27 • 7:00PM (all ages) September 28 • 6:00PM (all ages) September 28 • 8:00PM (21+)

Kingsbury Hall From its sold-out run in New York, Happy Hour comes to Salt Lake in this fun and subversive show that “breaks all the rules of theater” (DC Metro). Dressed in a pair of everyday men’s suits, Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass crash an after-work office party playing two instantly familiar guys. With microwave popcorn flying through the air and dollar store décor, our Happy Hour has two options – a karaoke version that is all ages, and a more traditional Happy Hour with beverages for a 21 and older crowd. No matter which you choose, Happy Hour is challenging, hilarious, relevant, and mostly a whole lot of fun.

JULIE FOWLIS• October 16

Libby Gardner Concert Hall With a career spanning ten years and four studio albums, Julie Fowlis has enchanted audiences around the world. It is little wonder that Disney Pixar tapped her to sing the theme songs for the award-winning animated film, “Brave,” set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. In an evening of traditional Gaelic stories and songs, Julie’s “crystalline” and “intoxicating” voice will take you on a journey through the rich traditions of her homeland.
