About

THE CROSSROADS PROJECT is a unique collaboration of Science and The Arts in pursuit of more effective communication of the challenges human civilization faces in the coming decades, intended to move us toward meaningful response. Crossroads is live performance, grounded in science, elevated by art, Where science informs us, it is the arts that infuses our knowledge with the experience of our humanity. Over the course of 75 minutes, we explore the wonder and the structure of the natural systems from which humans and human civilization have arisen — and upon which we are utterly dependent — and contrast this structure with those of humanity’s modern, global civilization. Compelling information is transformed from intellectual to visceral through compelling imagery and powerful music. RISING TIDE is an original composition by New York composer Laura Kaminsky, commissioned specifically for THE CROSSROADS PROJECT by the FRY STREET QUARTET.

THE CROSSROADS PROJECT HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE BY SUPPORT FROM UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY’S CAINE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS • COLLEGE OF SCIENCE QUINNEY COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES EMMA ECCLES JONES COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC • DEPARTMENT OF ART + DESIGN Please visit us at: www.thecrossroadsproject.org

About the Artists THE FRY STREET QUARTET

- Hailed as “a triumph of ensemble playing” by the New York Times, the FSQ is a multifaceted ensemble taking chamber music in new directions. Since securing the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the quartet has reached audiences from across the globe exploring the medium of the string quartet and its life-affirming essence. Appointed in 2002, the Fry Street Quartet currently holds the Endowed String Quartet Residency at the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The FSQ considers one of its primary objectives to cultivate an energetic and lasting bond with its community. The early years as a quartet were defined by a “Rural Residency” in Hickory, North Carolina, sponsored by Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts. It was during this period that the quartet cut its teeth building a local audience and embracing the challenge of creating artistic connections with the community through music making. Though the dramatic landscape of northern Utah is now the quartet’s environment, the legacy of the Hickory years remains intact. In this fast-paced age where many people (musicians, politicians, athletes) are travelling more than they are at home, the FSQ has continued to prioritize creating a ‘sense of place’ through their artistic endeavors and activities. The Crossroads Project is a clear expression of this mission. Integrating the synergistic power of art and science, The Crossroads Project seeks to build a broad understanding of, and response to, the enormous challenges of global sustainability with the hopes of inspiring a healthier relationship to our collective home.

ROBERT WATERS, violin - A violinist of remarkable

versatility, Robert Waters studied a the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Yale School of Music, and the Juilliard School. His range of experience includes positions such as Concertmaster of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, founding member of the Jupiter Trio and the Callisto Ensemble, Associate Concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Associate Professor of Violin at the DePaul

About the Artists University School of Music. In his current position with the Fry Street Quartet, Robert is on the faculty at USU’s Caine College of the Arts. Robert grew up in the small college town of Kent, Ohio, relishing the combination of gently rolling hills, warm summers, and backyard-grown veggies. Traveling and exploring new and different landscapes, too, has been a favorite activity since his earliest memories…. When I was nine years old, my family made its first trip to Alaska, where my mother grew up. The experience of this fascinating place at that age was awe-inspiring — almost overwhelming. The scale of landscape and the intense, unique beauty of that country seared itself into my memory and into my very being. I’ve always found great inspiration reaching into the community as an educator, teaching violin, chamber music, and orchestral skills to students of all ages. I’m particularly excited to expand that connection between people to the subject of global sustainability.

About the Artists As the realities of our current direction become clearer, and as my understanding of these myriad issues deepens, the more passionate I become as an advocate for positive change.

REBECCA MCFAUL, violin - Violinist Rebecca McFaul

is a founding member of the Fry Street Quartet, and teaches on the faculty of Utah State University’s Caine College of the Arts. She is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and Northwestern University. As a teenager, Rebecca spent an inspiring summer at the Tanglewood Institute in the presence of great artists such as Leonard Bernstein and Yo Yo Ma, after which the pursuit of a life in music became imperative. It was the medium of the string quartet, with its fantastic literature, range of expression, and ability to connect with an audience that called; the Fry Street Quartet has been and continues to be the realization of that pursuit. T he Crossroads Project merges the two areas of interest I’m most passionate about: music and humanity’s relationship to the natural world. It’s no surprise that I find myself aligned with these interests. A childhood of barefoot summers at “the lake” in Wisconsin’s north woods combined seamlessly with a house full of classical music. Appreciation and wonder at the workings of “Mother Nature” were normal, as was artistic pursuit. Looking back, this is where I first learned to pay attention to natural systems, and since then I’ve never been able to look away. With eyes wide open, the message from the scientific community is clear: we’re in trouble. It is my hope that the Crossroads Project will encourage our audiences to be participants rather than observers. That in this endeavor we might help to create a more connected and engaged society that more courageously seeks to build a society in harmony with the natural systems that support all life on this planet.

ANNE FRANCIS BAYLESS, cello - Anne Francis began

playing the cello at age four, and her love for chamber music developed just a few years later, when she played in her first string quartet. She received her Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland

About the Artists Institute of Music and her Master of Music from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. A member of the Fry Street Quartet since 2000, Anne has traveled the world to perform and teach with the quartet. She teaches on the faculty of The Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University, and divides her time between Salt Lake City and Logan, where she lives with cats Lily and Chaussettes, husband Brant, principal violist of the Utah Symphony, and her son Harrison. After moving to Utah in 2002, I soon fell in love with the incredible landscape around me, and became a ”regular” in the mountains, hiking and trail running at every opportunity. Being in the mountains has at turns been clarifying, meditative, inspiring, and calming – and often all of these things at once. This deeper connection to my surroundings has profoundly impacted my music making, and I feel fortunate indeed to have access to this kind of wonder on a neardaily basis. But as I have enjoyed the luxury of living in such an amazing region, in recent years I have also seen the brutal evidence of the sustainability crisis come right to our doorstep; record-

About the Artists breaking heat, ever-increasing levels of air pollution, and drought are just a few of the indicators that signal an increasingly distressed environment. As a new mother I find myself more and more troubled with the environmental inheritance we are leaving for future generations. We need to come together to face these challenges, and we are quickly running out of time. As musicians, I feel that one of our most important responsibilities is to connect to and engage our audiences. My hope is that the Crossroads Project will allow us to affect a deeper and more personal understanding of the issues facing all of us at this pivotal moment in the life of our planet as we know it.

BRADLEY OTTESEN, viola - Bradley Ottesen is the violist of the Fry Street Quartet, and teaches in the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. He holds a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory and a bachelor’s from Northwestern University. The different phases of his early career have been rich and varied, and he has been based in Boston, UtahPresents Thanks NANCY PEERY MARRIOTT

About the Artists Massachusetts and Calgary, Alberta. He has taught at every level — from public school to university, and values his experience of performing alongside doctors and lawyers equally with being the tenured member of a symphony orchestra. I grew up in Iowa, and through my own family history was always aware to some extent that we were immediately descended from a local agrarian community. Through proximity and exposure, nature got into my bones from an early age – the same way that music did. Study and appreciation of the arts promotes empathy, communication, creativity, and an innate understanding of how you relate to the world around you. Perhaps this is why we have so many music-lovers amongst scientists and doctors, as well as musicians who are environmentalists and passionate citizens. Regarding both the arts and the environment, we constantly face decisions relating to sustainability. It seems to me that finding real solutions will require us

About the Artists to look within ourselves and decide – what do we value the most? How can we be the most human? Are we truly doing the best we can with our collective time on earth? In this way these seemingly separate topics are bound together.

ROBERT DAVIES, Physicist and Educator, Utah

State University - A physicist and educator, Rob has served as an officer and meteorologist in the U.S. Air Force, worked for NASA on the International Space Station project, and taught on the faculty of three universities. His scientific work has included research into interactions of spacecraft with the space environment, the fundamental nature of light and information, and Earth’s changing climate. For the past decade, Rob’s work has focused on communicating the critical science of climate change and sustainable systems. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My fascination with science, I think, was born of the landscape around me — mountains, caves, and canyons; Badlands and dinosaur bones; granite spires and dark midnight skies. Summers were spent hiking Lookout Mountain and Spearfish Canyon, winters were spent skiing nearby mountain peaks. I gazed skyward through grandfather’s telescope, watched in awe the fearsome power of high plains thunderstorms, and poured over the World Book Encyclopedia that occupied two shelves of the living room bookcase. It was a childhood filled with theater, literature and music; chemistry sets, microscopes and math competitions. Newton blended seamlessly with Shakespeare, Einstein with Seneca, Darwin with Vonnegut. I’m not sure I distinguished, at the time, between scientific endeavor and artistic endeavor; it was all just human endeavor. And I still feel that way today.

About the Artists As a principal author of this performance, along with the Fry Street Quartet, Rob seeks to effect a deep-seated, visceral, and factual communication of our challenges and opportunities‌ Our purpose, I think, is not the wrangling of those who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge our challenges, but rather to speed the journey of those who do understand the existence of these challenges, though perhaps not the scale, and who have not yet begun to live that understanding.
