About Sacred Earth ABOUT SACRED EARTH Sacred Earth explores the interconnectedness between human emotions and the environment that shapes them. Inspired by the philosophies behind the ephemeral arts of kolam and Warli painting and the Tamil Sangam literature of India, Sacred Earth brings both internal and external landscapes to life. Each morning, women in southeastern India perform the silent ritual of kolam, making rice flour designs on the ground as conscious offerings to Mother Earth. This daily ritual creates a sacred space and becomes a link between the intimate home and the vastness of the outside world. The indigenous Warli people of western India revere the land and live in perfect coexistence with nature. Using their everyday lives as inspiration, their dynamic wall paintings find the spiritual in the everyday. For the Tamil Sangam poets of South India, the Earth was sacred. Recognizing that human activities are interwoven with all of creation, they drew parallels between inner and outer landscape and used the natural world as a metaphor to examine the intricacies of human emotion. As Sacred Earth builds from silent, meditative beginnings, the performers create a sacred space to honor the divinity in the natural world and the sustenance we derive from it. We surrender to the beauty of this sacred earth that has been given to us to safeguard, cherish, and pass on to our future generations.

THE POETRY OF SACRED EARTH The Tamil Sangam poets (300 B.C.E. – 300 C.E.) saw divinity in the physical world, which they divided into five tinais (landscapes): kurinji (mountainous region), mullai (forest), neythal (seaside), marutham (farmland), and paalai (desert). Recognizing that human activities are interwoven with all of creation, they drew parallels between inner landscape and outer landscape and used the natural world as a metaphor to examine the intricacies of human emotion. The tinais thus become more than geographical realms. Each region’s particular qualities—flora and fauna, climate and seasons, music and culture, people and daily life—are interwoven with the area’s emotional tones to create a distinct portrait of mood and setting. Characters in Sangam literature are never named, rather they represent ideals—paradigms of the human condition.

The Poetry of Sacred Earth Lakshmi Stuthi Soloist: Aparna Ramaswamy An invocation in praise of the Goddess Lakshmi Excerpts from the Paripattal: Soloist: Aparna Ramaswamy Endure forever, O beauteous Land! May the Clouds never fail but ever pour In plenty, so that the River great May never be dry but ever full. Kurinji: Soloist: Aparna Ramaswamy Bigger than the earth, certainly, Higher than the sky. More unfathomable than the waters Is this love for this man Of the mountain slopes Where bees make rich honey From the flowers of the kurinji That has such black stalks –Tevakulattar, Kurunthokai 3 Mullai: Soloist: Ranee Ramaswamy On his hills The manai creeper that usually sprawls On large round stones Sometimes takes to a sleeping elephant At parting, His arms twine with mine He gave me guarantees That he would live in my heart Forever Friend, why do you think That is any reason for grieving? –Paranar, Kurunthokai 36 Neythal: Soloist: Aparna Ramaswamy I am here: My loveliness Eaten away by pallor Is lost in the woods by the sea. My lover is comfortable in his hometown.

All the guarded secrets of our love Are all over the village square –Venputhi, Kurunthokai 97 Marutham: Soloist: Tamara Nadel There was a time when My friend gave you Bitter neem fruit and You called it Sweet lump of sugar. But now she gives you Sweet water From the ice-cool springs Of Pari’s hill And you call it hot and brackish. Is this the way Your love has gone? –Milai Kanthan, Kurunthokai 196 Kurinji: Soloist: Ashwini Ramaswamy What could my mother be To yours? What kin is my father To yours anyway? About the Artists RANEE RAMASWAMY and APARNA RAMASWAMY are Artistic Directors, Choreographers, and Principal Dancers of Ragamala Dance Company, founded by Ranee in 1992. As dancemakers and performers, they explore the dynamic tension between the ancestral and the contemporary, making dance landscapes that dwell in opposition—secular and spiritual life, inner and outer worlds, the human and the natural, rhythm and stillness—to find the transcendence that lies in between. As mother and daughter, each brings her generational experience to the work—the rich traditions, deep philosophical roots, and ancestral wisdom of India meeting and merging with their hybridic perspectives as Indian-American artists. As protégés and senior disciples of legendary dancer and choreographer Alarmél Valli, known as one of India’s greatest living masters, Ranee and Aparna’s training in the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam is the bedrock of their creative aesthetic. Ranee and Aparna’s work is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, National Dance Project, MAP Fund, The McKnight Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, New Music/USA, USArtists International, and the Japan Foundation, and has been commissioned by the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Lincoln Center Out of Doors (New York), the Krannert Center (University of Illinois), the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (University of Maryland), Opening Nights Performing Arts (Florida State University), the Arts Center at NYU-Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), and the American Composers Forum. Ranee and Aparna were jointly named “2011 Artist of the Year” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. They have developed work in residence at the MANCC (the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography), at NYU Abu Dhabi, and during an NPN residency at The Yard. Ranee currently serves on the National Council on the Arts, appointed by President Barack Obama. She is recipient of a 2014 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a 2012 United States Artists Fellowship, a 2011 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award, a Bush Fellowship for Choreography, and 14 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Choreography and Interdisciplinary Art. Aparna is recipient of a 2016 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award and a 2016 Joyce Award. Described by The New York Times as “thrillingly three-dimensional… rapturous and profound,” she has received three McKnight Artist Fellowships for Dance and Choreography and a Bush Fellowship for Choreography, and was selected as one of Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch for 2010. Her solo work, presented with live music, has toured the U.S. and India with support from the National Dance Project and USArtists International, most recently at Narada Gana Sabha (Chennai), the National Centre for Performing Arts (Mumbai, India), and The Joyce Theater (New York). Aparna is an empaneled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and serves on the Board of Trustees of Dance/USA.

Opening Performers NITYA NRITYA DANCE COMPANY Nitya Nritya Dance company is a young SLC based Bharatanatyam performance and training company. An important goal of the company is to generate and nurture an interest in the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam and to present its versatility and sophistication to the audiences in the Salt Lake Valley.

performs a traditional repertoire and also collaborates to create new and interesting dance items that can be relevant, accessible and add to the rich tapestry of Dance in the Salt Lake Valley. Pushpanjali and Khandam Alaripu Choreography: Jyothsna Sainath Dancers: Jyothsna Sainath, Moumita Bhattacharya, Maya Jammulapati, and Arundhati Oommen

The Hidden Choreography: Erica Womack, Elizabeth Stitch, Raksha Karpoor, Srilatha Singh Dancers: Erica Womack, Elizabeth Stitch, Raksha Karpoor, Srilatha Singh

The Pushpanjali is a traditional floral offering to the stage. It is typically performed as an opening piece that sets the mood for the artistic experience that follows. Nitya Nritya Dance company presents a Pushpanjali in a melody called Andolika, that is set to a beat cycle of 8. This piece is a composition of percussionist G. Gurumurthy. It will be immediately followed by an Alaripu in a beat cycle of 5 which is choreographed to celebrate the majestic beauty of the mountains that surround the Salt Lake Valley.

A collaborative effort between Modern dance and Bharatanatyam, this is a crossover piece set to music that also crosses over between traditional South Indian Carnatic music and Jazz. The theme of the sung verses is the illumination of the self, that finds what it seeks “Hidden” within itself. Like flame inherent in wood, like gold inherent in rock, like oil inherent in the sesame seed, the Godhood one seeks is hidden within oneself.

Maha Deva Shiva Choreography: Guru Bhanumathi, with modifications by Jyothsna Sainath Dancers: Jyothsna Sainath The second piece is an ode to Lord Shiva, the dancing deity of the Hindu Pantheon. The piece juxtaposes the vigorous dancing and the meditative serenity of Lord Shiva. It is in a melody called Revathi and set to a beat cycle of 8. CHITRAKAAVYA DANCE ChitraKaavya Dance was founded by Srilatha Singh, to explore her abiding interest in Bharatanatyam. The company

Legacy Choreography: Srilatha Singh Dancers: Raksha Karpoor, Srilatha Singh, Chandana Palukuri, Shrivatsav Pattabhiraman, Trevor Wilde In this item we are exploring contemporary English poetry “For the Courageous” by Alixa, through the vocabulary of Bharatanatyam, to illustrate the universality and versatility of this traditional art form. Three verses of English poetry are recited and each is followed by a dance vignette set to varying music. The dominant narrative of the poem refers to the legacy inherited by those whose ancestors have been courageous, resilient, and generous in spirit, enough to overcome, prevail and forgive.
