Welcome I am inspired by the love of music, art and theatre that this community demonstrates through support of our organization and so many other cultural institutions. We at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera aim to inspire and connect our community through engaging performances of great, live music such as today’s opera by Classical master Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Featured in today’s opera are two of our Utah Opera Resident Artists, Amy Owens and Tyson Miller. Our Resident Artist program is designed to offer training that helps young opera professionals further their careers and to provide music outreach performances throughout the state of Utah. These professional artists have been touring the state since September, inspiring the people of Utah with age-appropriate educational programming in our schools and community concerts in rural areas. Melia Tourangeau President & CEO

Utah is blessed with many great local musicians including the amazing soprano Celena Shafer, starring as Konstanze in today’s performance and seen many times before on stage with Utah Opera and at Abravanel Hall. This summer, Celena will join Utah Symphony | Utah Opera as we collaborate with Utah’s National Parks and the state’s Mighty 5™ tourism initiative to jointly celebrate the natural and artistic treasures of Utah. The Utah Symphony, smaller chamber ensembles, and Celena will present a series of unforgettable free outdoor concerts August 11–17 under the baton of Utah Symphony Music Director Thierry Fischer against the backdrop of Utah’s iconic national parks to create one epic experience. This tour is the kick-off to many other special events we have planned as part of our Campaign for Perpetual Motion (see pages 46–48). All of these events are possible thanks to the support of many local community leaders, none more dedicated than Pat Richards, who has served as the USUO Board Chair for the past nine years. I am grateful for her advocacy of these activities which not only draw focus to the high-quality artistry we provide in every performance, but demonstrate how we inspire our community in meaningful and relevant ways. To all of you who support Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, a huge “Thank You” from us. It is through your help that we are able to connect the community through great live music! Sincerely,

Artistic Director’s Message Dear Utah Opera Friends and Family,

After fourteen seasons with Utah Opera, I often arrive at our May production in a slight state of incredulity…where DID the time go? It has been a fulfilling season of opera as we performed in three different venues while introducing several new and exciting artists – singers, directors and designers – and presented everything from the over-the-top grand spectacle (Turandot) to a more intimate experience (Fatal Song). Thank you for joining us on this operatic journey.

Christopher McBeth Artistic Director

With Mozart’s delightful singspiel, The Abduction from the Seraglio, we close the season with something uplifting and certainly less heavy in nature. Yes…not one single person loses a head or coughs to death! Under the musical guidance of Maestro Wedow, noted Mozart specialist, and the keen understanding of director Chas Rader-Schieber (who both make their Utah Opera debuts with this production) we follow the protagonist, Belmonte, on a classic hero’s journey wrapped inside that perfect cocoon of Mozart’s meticulous musical style. I’m thrilled to have audience favorites Celena Shafer return in the role of Konstanze and Gustav Andreassen as Osmin, as well as Metropolitan Opera tenor Andrew Stenson debuting with Utah Opera in the role of Belmonte. Beside these seasoned artists I am happy to showcase Utah Opera Resident Artists Amy Owens and Tyson Miller. For me personally, I find it fascinating that The Abduction from the Seraglio can be overshadowed by some of Mozart’s other operas. The story contains classic ‘East meets West’ elements that are as prominent today as ever and the characters are as understandable (and borderline modern) as any in Mozart’s works. The music is exquisitely written and the vocal writing is deceivingly difficult demanding more virtuosic singing than most of the other more popular Mozart titles. I’ve mentioned in previous letters a concept to which I was introduced in music school: art concealing art. Take a closer listen to this music and a closer look at the drama and this concept becomes immediately evident. Enjoy the performance and thank you for your support of Utah Opera. Appreciatively, Christopher

Board Chair‘s Message

photo: Pat Richards receiving the 2013 Opera America National Opera Trustee Recognition Award (L-R Pat Richards, Carol Henry, Frayda Lindemann, Susan Morris)

This season I complete nine years as Chair of the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera Board of Trustees. It has been a challenging and exciting time and I have never had a more rewarding experience. I deeply appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve this great organization. No one can be successful as a leader without the dedication of others. I am so grateful to our Board of Trustees for their steadfastness, vision and courage in the face of a challenging economy, and to our management, musicians and staff for joining together and working positively toward a stronger, more vibrant organization. Most of all, to you, our audience and donors, thank you for your presence and support as we share with you the greatest music ever written. Utah Opera has long enjoyed a reputation for outstanding productions. Our highly acclaimed March production of Turandot demonstrated yet a new level of artistic excellence for the company. Building on our reputation as a valued collaborator and on our state-of-the-art production facility for sets and costumes, our future vision includes partnering with other opera companies to build new productions for the enjoyment of our audiences and others around the country. We invite you to help us further these goals as we reach out to each of you through our Campaign for Perpetual Motion. Our future has never been brighter. With your continued support, Utah Opera will shine as a beacon of excellence and a vital contributor to the quality of life in Utah.

The Abduction from the Seraglio

synopsis

ACT I. Turkey, 1700s. Pasha Selim has

purchased three Europeans from pirates— Konstanze, a Spanish woman of good family; Blonde, her English maid; and Pedrillo, servant of Konstanze’s fiancé, Belmonte. Belmonte has traced them to a seaside palace, where Konstanze has become the Pasha’s favorite and Pedrillo has become the gardener. Blonde has been given as a gift by the Pasha to his overseer, Osmin. Belmonte’s first encounter is with Osmin, who is polite until Belmonte mentions Pedrillo, the custodian’s rival for Blonde. He drives Belmonte away and then rails at Pedrillo, who has come in hopes of making peace with him. Belmonte returns to find his former servant, who tells him the Pasha loves Konstanze but will not force himself on her. Pedrillo will try to arrange a meeting between Konstanze and Belmonte and an escape by boat with Blonde, if they can get past Osmin. In hiding, Belmonte yearns for Konstanze, who soon appears with Pasha Selim. When the Pasha asks her why she is always depressed by his courtship of her, Konstanze replies she cannot forget her love for her fiancé from whom she was separated. After she leaves, Pedrillo introduces Belmonte to the Pasha as a promising young architect. Selim welcomes him and, upon departing, arranges a conference for the next day. Osmin bars the way when Belmonte and Pedrillo try to enter the palace, but he is confused easily, and the two foreigners march him around in circles. Dizzy, Osmin does not notice they have gained access.

ACT II. In a garden, Blonde confounds Osmin

with her cleverness and faces him down when he threatens her. Konstanze finds Blonde and complains of her sad state, which does not improve when the Pasha again asks her to love him. She proudly refuses, preferring torture, even death. When they have gone, Blonde and Pedrillo dance into the garden, discussing their plan for escape: they will get Osmin drunk and all four lovers will leave on Belmonte’s ship. Later, Pedrillo goes about his business, finding Osmin cooperative, though drinking wine is against his religion. Thoroughly inebriated, Osmin weaves away with the bottle, leaving the coast clear for Belmonte to meet Konstanze. Their reunion is shared by Blonde and Pedrillo. ACT III. Just before midnight, Pedrillo places

a ladder against the ladies’ window and sings a serenade, the signal for escape. But he wakes Osmin, who is not so hung over that he doesn’t realize what is going on. He takes them all to the Pasha, who becomes angry. Belmonte suggests the Pasha collect a handsome ransom from his wealthy family, the Lostados. At this, the Pasha realizes that Belmonte is the son of an old enemy, the man who exiled him from his own country. But eventually he decides that rather than take blood for blood he will repay evil with good, freeing Konstanze and Belmonte, even Blonde and Pedrillo. This does not sit well with Osmin, who will lose Blonde, but he is promised other rewards. The grateful lovers praise their benefactor as they prepare to set sail.

The Abduction from the Seraglio

composer and librettists

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was born into a family

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

of musicians. He began composing at age five, and played before the Bavarian Elector and Austrian Empress at age six. A child prodigy, Mozart had composed two operas and several symphonies and string quartets before he turned twenty. Although a gifted composer and performer, Mozart’s adult life was spent in constant pursuit of financial stability. At age 17 he was engaged as court composer in Salzburg, but continued to compose abundantly. He became restless in this position, and relocated to Vienna in 1781. His Vienna residency began brilliantly when Mozart was able to lobby a commission from the Nationalsingspieltheater for The Abduction from the Seraglio, which premiered in July of 1782. Later that same year, Mozart married Konstanze Weber, and this union produced six children, only two of whom survived infancy. Mozart’s Vienna years were marked by great fame, while riches remained elusive. He worked freelance, performed on the piano, taught, published his music, played at patrons’ houses and composed by commission in order to support himself. The operas of Mozart are staples of the repertoire, led by Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Mozart’s final opera, The Magic Flute. Christoph Friedrich Bretzner (1748–1807) published a book in

1781, Belmont und Konstanze, or The Abduction from the Seraglio, containing the story on which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio. In Bretzner’s story, the hero Belmonte, assisted by his servant Pedrillo, attempt to rescue his beloved Konstanze from the seraglio of the Pasha Selim. Bretzner himself had rewritten his drama as a Singspiel, which had been set to music by the composer Johann André. When Bretzner found that Mozart had used his libretto, he expressed his displeasure. “A certain person from Vienna by the name of Mozart has had the audacity to misuse my drama Belmonte und Konstanze as a libretto for an opera. I hereby most solemnly protest at this infringement of my rights and reserve the right to undertake further steps in this matter.” Ironically, Bretzner is now most famous for his role in history as one of Mozart’s librettists. Johann Gottlieb Stephanie, Austrian dramatist and actor, became

director of the National-Singspiel in Vienna in 1779 and wrote both plays and libretti. His libretti include Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio (1782) and Der Schauspieldirektor (1786). Stephanie was the person who gave Mozart the idea to use Christoph Friedrich Bretzner’s text for his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio. With Stephanie’s help, Mozart altered the text for his libretto, changing the end of the story to reflect the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment with the Pasha’s release of the two couples, Pedrillo and Blonde, and Belmonte and Konstanze. 34

Ladders

Various Escapes, Variously Accomplished By Jeff Counts It is a simple plan. Two ladders, one each for Konstanze and Blonde, to be placed under their windows at the appointed hour. The Pasha’s overseer Osmin has already been drugged with spiked wine, so once the women hurry down said ladders and into the arms of their rescuers, it’s off to the waiting ship and then on to freedom. But, no. This is opera, after all, so of course the plan ends up being more of the “best laid” sort. The life the two women seek to flee is rather operatic too, in that it presents itself in only the broadest of strokes, leaving the gritty details to the imagination of the observer. As observers, thankfully, we are perfectly capable of filling in those blanks because, much like Mozart and his late-18th century contemporaries in the ideological West, we have cultivated lifelong fascinations with the exotic cultures of the world. So it goes without saying that Turkish harems, in all their depraved glory, are something we have no trouble imagining.

1/2

story to music but he had ceased work on Zaide in 1780 to take up Idomeneo and never returned to his original Turkish-themed singspiel, at least not in name. The Abduction libretto was remarkably similar to that of Zaide (some call it the first draft of Abduction) and the familiarity it generated did not end there. In crafting the story of Abduction, Gottlieb Stephanie drew upon the previous work of Christoph Friedrich Bretzner, but he could have chosen from any number of harem escape narratives from the previous two decades. Stephanie apparently used Bretzner’s Belmonte und Konstanze without telling him. Bretzner’s reaction was predictably stern but both men’s debt to the wealth of other sources spinning about during that time makes for a decidedly complicated web of provenance. Present in just about every version of the popular seraglio story were echoes of two extremely influential Ottoman historical figures.

The centuries-long reign of the Ottoman Empire was well into its slow, fatal period of decay in 1781 when Mozart chose it as the subject of his new opera. But even as shadows of their former selves, the Ottoman Sultans could still ignite the creative passions of artists throughout Europe. The Viennese, given their relatively close proximity to the Turks and the fact that Ottoman armies had twice banged on their very own gates, were especially susceptible to enchantment by the lore of the exotic East. In fact, The Abduction from the Seraglio was not Mozart’s first attempt to set a harem rescue

Suleiman the Magnificent (or “the Lawmaker,” depending on your perspective) ruled the Empire from 1520–66 and his life coincided with the true zenith of his people’s supremacy. Zeniths being what they are, however, the steady decline of Ottoman hegemony also began with Suleiman. In this, though, he had help. Suleiman was a poet and a conqueror who possessed the entirety of the Balkan peninsula (he nearly took Vienna as well in 1529) and had no less than 300 hundred concubines. Most notable among his collection of enslaved women was one Roxelana, a red-haired beauty of Ukrainian heritage that came to Suleiman by way of capture in Russia (present-day Poland to be exact) and selection in Constantinople. Beyond the more obvious hardships (these are among the things we can surely imagine), the realities of life for someone like Roxelana in 16th-century Turkish bondage involved the negotiation of specific hierarchies within the harem. Four chief concubines maintained order

over the lower ranks and vied for the right (if indeed it could be called such) to bear the Sultan’s heir. Roxelana started at the bottom but rose quickly once she caught Suleiman’s eye. She was savvy enough to keep his eye and soon became his favorite and then his only consort. Roxelana appears to have been a quick study in her new culture and before long, her capacity for intrigue and manipulation led to the death of the two most likely challengers to her future son’s ascension. Marriage to Suleiman and freedom from the harem soon followed, making this once-modest daughter of an Orthodox priest the most powerful woman in the Empire. Rather than run, Roxelana had escaped her fate by rewriting it.

the others who attempted to modernize her. In the dramatic arts of 18th-century Europe, the lighthearted “rescue” plot was still king and the story of an ambitious woman who didn’t require a liberator to “re-abduct” her just wouldn’t do.

Mozart’s Pasha Selim was clearly drawn from the legacy of Suleiman (the analogous character in Zaide was in fact called “Soliman”) and the “victim” aspects of Roxelana’s persona seem to have been split equally into Konstanze and Blonde for dramatic purposes. The 16thcentury setting of Abduction also points to the royal couple’s story, even if the Mozart/ Stephanie account takes a very different path to conclusion. This difference is emblematic of the aforementioned “fascination” with Turkish exoticism and the desire of many western artists to read a recognizable measure of nobility into the characters they created in homage. In The Abduction from the Seraglio, Selim is a hotblooded but thoughtful monarch, one capable of mercy even against great pressure from his inner circle. In this way, he is not so far from Suleiman. The real Sultan certainly followed his heart with Roxelana, to the shame of his entire court, and in all ways he was the last remotely salutary leader of the Ottomans. After he died, the fish truly began to rot from the head with a succession of spectacularly terrible Sultans, each more inept and morally corrupt than the last. Roxelana’s truth was more problematic for Mozart and

Mozart was interested in escape himself in 1781. His jailor was his boss, the Archbishop of Salzburg Hieronymus Colloredo, a man Mozart “hated to the point of madness.” Employment as a musician by an Archbishop or any other provincial aristocratic ruler in Mozart’s day meant knowing one’s place. This meant waiting to be called before entering a room, taking one’s meals in the kitchen with the hired help and generally performing on command like a pet. It probably felt like indentured servitude to Mozart, and though it is an uneven parallel to be sure, he must have harbored a bit of kindred frustration with the Turkish slaves he embodied in music. Mozart’s letters to his father from the period show how deeply he longed for the welcoming arms of Vienna, where he knew musicians of his caliber were treated with commensurate respect. The Archbishop had just included Mozart in his retinue on a trip to the capital city and, in that heady atmosphere, the composer could not help but misbehave. He did so often and even caused a scandal by walking straight up to the Russian Ambassador at a soirée and striking up a conversation, which was unheard of even in liberal Vienna. His impertinent behavior eventually earned Mozart a dismissal from Colloredo’s court and also a (quite literal) kick in the pants on the way out the door. It was worth it. He left Salzburg for good, settled in Vienna as planned, and found his fame almost right away. His first major success there and the symbol of his own personal rescue plot was, fittingly, The Abduction from the Seraglio. Clearly, there are many ways to become free in this world, whether you choose to climb up or down.

Company Spotlight Biography

Carol Anderson Principal Coach

I was born in Huntsville, Alabama, but we moved around a bit before settling in Seabrook, Texas, a suburb of Houston. My parents were both Texas natives, and I was young when we moved there, so I consider myself a Texan through and through. My mom was a church pianist, and both parents were lovers of music, so I grew up with music in the house. People ask when I started piano lessons, and I can’t really say. I was an independent child, so it appears I taught myself the basics, before starting formal lessons. I went to Baylor University (Sic’em Bears!) as a double major in piano and voice, but it became pretty apparent I wasn’t going to be an opera singer. My voice teacher, Dr. Karen Peeler, encouraged me to take the collaborative path, reminding me singers always need a good pianist in their corner. Three degrees and several moves later, I joined the Houston Grand Opera Studio as an apprentice coach. There I became great friends with Christopher and Julie McBeth, also just beginning their professional operatic journeys. And that’s how I ended up moving to Utah Opera 18 years later, through those early connections! Hobbies, Skills

I’m a pianist first and foremost, but as principal coach I wear a multitude of hats. A favorite part of my job is presenting Prelude talks where I get to talk about my favorite subject, opera. I’ve studied Italian, French, German and a wee bit of Russian, and use these language skills as I work with singers on opera arias and art songs. Over the years I’ve learned a ton of repertoire, classical and music theatre, and really enjoy creating programs for our Resident Artist singers that are interesting to the performers as well as appealing to our audiences. When not in the office, I love to be outdoors. Hiking and skiing are my main outdoor passions. Zion is my favorite place for restoration of my soul after a busy rehearsal period. I love to travel, and often go on great trips with my mom. I just bought a 1920s bungalow last January, so I’m learning a lot about home ownership. And I have an embarrassing addiction to reality TV shows and post-apocalyptic drama, so my TV viewing ranges from The Walking Dead to The Bachelor. Musical Notes

Opera is an amazing art form, combining theatrical and musical elements in a way that no other art form does. I consider myself privileged to be an opera ambassador to our patrons and to the Utah public. We’re so fortunate to live in a state where arts and education are valued by the community, and I look forward to being a part of Utah’s musical life for as long as you’ll have me!

UTAH SYMPHONY | UTAH OPERA IN PERPETUAL MOTION

In November we announced The Campaign for Perpetual Motion, a $20 million public campaign to celebrate Utah Symphony’s 75th Anniversary in 2015–16. We have exciting plans leading up to this anniversary—including recording, broadcasting, and touring at the state and national levels, and even internationally. We look forward to sharing these plans with you in the coming months. We launched the Campaign with a remarkable $5 million lead gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, whose tradition of support totaling more than $32 million spans three decades. This lead gift was made in addition to a $1 million gift from the Foundation to our Leadership Campaign, which during 2011 and 2012 prepared a solid foundation for the public fundraising effort. More than 35 individuals, corporations, and foundations contributed to the Leadership Campaign, including an extraordinary $4.6 million capstone gift from O.C. Tanner Company. Stay tuned—we know you will be proud of our plans to build and showcase your world-class symphony and opera throughout Utah and beyond. Find out more at usuo.org/support.
