a message from Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for our 22nd season! This year, Utah Festival is presenting my four favorite works in the genres of American Opera, Operetta and Musical Theatre. You are about to see some of the most extraordinary performers we have ever presented. We are fast approaching the completion of the Utah Theatre, which should be ready to present shows in next year’s line-up. It has been a lengthy project through which we have exercised careful planning and prudent fiscal responsibility. Built in 1924 as an opera house, it was converted to a movie house in 1945. Now she will be both! We are grateful to an extensive list of devoted friends who have enabled the rebirth of the Utah through their generosity. I have enjoyed being on the stage for the past eight years, but it is a blessing to focus on the big picture of the Festival this year. I have needed all my concentration to focus on the wonderful projects coming to fruition. I’ll be back on the stage next year in one of my favorite roles: Don Quixote in The Man of La Mancha. This season has proven to be our most exhilarating yet! Thank you for supporting us to this point. We hope you will continue to do so by inviting your friends to our productions and through donations of any amount. Our plans for the future are so thrilling. As Jolson used to say, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!”

A Legacy Remembered, a legacy remembered, a future envisioned

A Future Envisioned

C

ache Valley has a long tradition of opera and musical theatre. In the late 1800s there were opera houses in every town. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, there were four functioning opera houses in downtown Logan within a block of what is now the Ellen Eccles Theatre. In the 1920s, Cache Valley opera houses offered an eclectic repertoire of Verdi, Gilbert and Sullivan, Rossini and others. The Thatcher family of Logan built their third and most lavish grand opera house called the Capitol Theatre and its stage showcased performances of operatic masterworks. As part of the Pantages Vaudeville Circuit it hosted such musical luminaries as the Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen, Glenn Miller and John Philip Sousa. Michael Ballam first fell in love with the theatre’s ability to inspire and transform lives when he took the stage of the Capitol Theatre at five years of age. By the 1950s, the theatre had fallen into decline and he was saddened by its run-down condition. By mid-1960, the glorious gold leaf had been painted over, the paintings covered with burlap, and a wall was built behind the proscenium to seal off the stage and support a movie screen. The grand opera house had become a movie theatre. Michael promised himself that someday he would assist in restoring the theatre to its former role and glory. After completing his schooling at USU, Michael completed a Ph.D. program at Indiana University. During the following two decades, he fulfilled many of his boyhood dreams as he performed at great opera houses in the United States and abroad. He sang at the White House, the Kennedy Center and the Vatican. He sang with Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Birgit Nilsson and Joan Sutherland. In 1987, a life-threatening illness brought him back to Logan where he joined the faculty of the Music Department at Utah State University. Fortunately, his life was prolonged and he again thought about his desire to help restore the Capitol Theatre. He met with Eugene Needham, who had recently purchased the theatre and surrounding buildings. Eugene shared Michael’s vision for restoring the Capitol Theatre and agreed to donate it for the arts. On a close vote, the city agreed to accept the theatre. The restoration project needed a lot of money and countless hours of volunteer labor. A board of directors was formed to provide oversight and legal structure. Donations flowed in and volunteers by the hundreds scrubbed floors, peeled paint and made repairs. Like the mythological Phoenix that dies and rises again from its own ashes, the theatre was restored to life again. Appropriately, paintings of Phoenix birds grace the upper walls of the theatre today. At long last, Cache Valley had a prized jewel at its center again, the newly named Ellen Eccles Theatre. Michael formed the Utah Festival Opera Company in 1993 with a staff of five part-time employees and volunteers. Setting a high standard from the beginning, he obtained gratis services of nationally renowned orchestra conductors and performing artists. Over the years, the company grew and expanded its offerings. True to the vision of its founders, the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre (Utah Festival) has been named by Money Magazine as one of the Top 20 summer opera festivals in the world.

summer 2014

Michael believes that life lessons that can be learned from the fine arts must be passed from generation to generation or be lost. Dreams and enduring values planted in young hearts have far-reaching positive outcomes. Utah Festival’s Opera by Children program has enabled more than 70,000 school children to experience the joy of creating and producing their own operas. During the summer festival, our Academy offers classes on many topics taught by experts. The Dansante building, home of Utah Festival and its Youth Conservatory, buzzes with children and youth during the school year where they learn singing, acting, dancing and technical production. In 2011, Utah Festival instituted the Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards. After weeks of judging and evaluation by theatre professionals, cast members from the top 10 high school musicals in Utah come to Logan for an electric evening where they perform scenes from their musicals and receive awards. Utah Festival sends the top male and female performers to New York City where they contend in a national competition and participate in intensive workshops and training. Our summer festival has become a treasured tradition for many who live in and visit Cache Valley. Looking forward, we will soon be expanding our cultural offerings through the Utah Theatre, which is nearing completion of its extensive renovation. The grand opening is slated for later this year. A perfect complement to the nearby Ellen Eccles Theatre and the Caine Lyric Theatre, the Utah Theatre’s 350-seat format makes it an ideal venue for classic movies, chamber operas, musicals, concerts, recitals and even business and community events year-round. We are committed to helping the rising generation gain the values, discipline and growth that come by participating in the musical and performing arts. Thank you for your support as we work together to provide ennobling artistic experiences. With our thanks and best wishes—from the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre

Vanessa vanessa

Synopsis

This is the story of two women, Vanessa and Erika, caught in the central dilemma that faces every human being: whether to fight for one’s ideals to the point of shutting oneself off from reality, or compromise with what life has to offer, even lying to oneself for the mere sake of living. Like a sullen Greek chorus, a third woman (the old Grandmother) condemns by her very silence the refusal first of Vanessa, then of Erika, to accept the bitter truth that life offers no solution except its own inherent struggle. When Vanessa, in her final eagerness to embrace life, realizes this truth, it is perhaps too late. -Gian Garlo Menotti (Vanessa librettist)

Act I Vanessa, Erika, and the Baroness await the arrival of Anatol, who was Vanessa’s lover 20 years earlier. After his departure, she covered up all the mirrors of the house until his expected return, unwilling to face looking at her aging self. A man named Anatol arrives and she thinks he is her former lover. Vanessa refuses to reveal her face to him until he says he still loves her. He declares his love, but she does not recognize him. However, it is the young Anatol who has come and his father is dead. Vanessa is upset and leaves the room, and Erika and Anatol enjoy the meal and wine meant for Vanessa and his father. Erika tells the Baroness that the young Anatol seduced her on his first night in the house and the Baroness scolds her. Erika has fallen in love with Anatol, but resists his marriage proposal because she doubts his sincerity. Not knowing Erika loves the young man and in her delusionary state of mind, Vanessa tells her niece that she still loves Anatol, despite Erika’s warning that he is not her former lover. The Baroness tells Erika to fight for Anatol. She is unsure if he is worthy of her efforts. He proposes again and again she declines. There will be a 20-minute intermission.

Act II The doctor is drunk at a New Year’s Eve ball. The Baroness and Erika refuse to come to the party to hear his announcement of Anatol and Vanessa’s engagement. The doctor goes to fetch them, while Vanessa tells Anatol her fears. Finally Erika, who, unbeknownst to everyone else, is pregnant, comes downstairs and faints, clutching her stomach, while the doctor is making the announcement. She recovers and flees into the freezing weather in order to abort her child. There will be a 15-minute intermission.

Act III Vanessa is happy when Erika is found alive. She asks Anatol why Erika is acting so strangely and whether he thinks she loves him. He explains that she does not. Continuing in her delusionary state, Vanessa begs Anatol to take her away. Meanwhile, Erika confesses to the Baroness that she had been pregnant, but is no longer. As Vanessa and Anatol finalize their preparations to move to Paris, Vanessa asks Erika why she ran away. Erika replies that she was just being foolish, and Vanessa tells her she may never come back to the house where she has been living. After the couple leaves, Erika covers the mirrors and closes up the house, just as Vanessa had done before her. She says it is now her turn to wait.

Oklahoma! oklahoma!

Synopsis

It is 1906 near the town of Claremore in the Indian Territories, a tumultuous mix of culturally and economically divided cattlemen and farmers. The community is alive with hope and anticipation that they will soon become a state, while the rivalry between the farmers and cowboys over fences and water rights creates an environment rife with confrontation.

ACT I Oklahoma!, based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs, tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams in these pre-statehood days of The Territories. The only thing stronger than their affection for each other is their stubborn refusal to admit it. Eller, Laurey’s aunt, witnesses the unspoken romance with amusement. While Curly musters the nerve to ask Laurey to accompany him to the box social that evening, Laurey’s hired hand, Jud Fry, asks her instead. She accepts out of fear of Jud’s brooding, surly nature and the defeated Curly asks Aunt Eller to accompany him. Meawhile, Will Parker returns from Kansas City to claim his girl, Ado Annie, with the $50 dollars he earned in a rodeo. But in his absence, Ado Annie has fallen under the spell of the Persian peddler man, Ali Hakim, and Will has obtusely spent all his winnings on presents for Ado and therefore doesn’t have the $50 cash that Ado’s father, Andrew Carnes, requires for his daughter’s hand. Although Ali Hakim has no desire to marry Ado Annie, Andrew’s shotgun may prove to be the incentive necessary to make it happen. There will be a 20-minute intermission.

ACT II Following a barn-raising on the Skidmore Ranch, bidding has begun for lunch hampers at the box social. Ali Hakim, anxious to be free of Ado Annie, purchases the presents Will bought in Kansas City and stops him from bidding it away, putting $50 back in Will’s pocket to win back Ado. Andrew Carnes reluctantly agrees that Ado can marry Will, and they are engaged after establishing a few rules for each other and the Persian peddler leaves for the open road. As bidding begins for Laurey’s hamper, Curly and Jud are equally intent on winning the lunch as well as the right to escort Laurey. Curly comes out victorious after selling his saddle, his horse, and his gun to outbid the farm hand. However, Jud is not dissuaded by the defeat and continues to torment Laurey for her affections. Jud flees as Curly finds Laurey distraught and the two confess their love for each other. Three weeks later, the town has gathered to celebrate Laurey and Curly’s wedding. Unexpectedly, Ali Hakim has returned as the husband of Gertie Cummings, a boisterous flirt, having finally been forced to the altar by a shotgun. The wedding party is soon interrupted as Jud Fry returns. Jud continues to harass Laurey and a fight breaks out between him and Curly. The drunken Jud falls on his own knife and dies. A trial his held on the spot to keep Curly from spending his wedding night in jail, and he is found not guilty. The guests serenade Curly and Laurey as they ride off on their honeymoon.

The Student Prince the student prince

Synopsis PROLOGUE

In the Court of Karlsberg, Prince Karl Franz has been living a mundane, sheltered, and altogether unexciting life. His one true friend and tutor, Dr. Engel, has just been named a member of the Privy Council and unwillingly instructed to accompany Karl Franz to the University in Heidelberg for the sole purpose of keeping a watchful eye on the Prince. The court fears that any indiscretions will imperil the arranged marriage between Karl Franz and the Princess Margaret, whom he has never seen. However, as a graduate of the University of Heidelberg, Dr. Engel wishes for Karl to experience life outside the castle and, at the Prince’s orders, gladly agrees to fail miserably in his assignment as spy.

ACT I Karl Franz arrives at the Inn of the Three Golden Apples with Lutz, the Prince’s pretentious valet; Hubert, Lutz’s own assistant; and Dr. Engel. The inn is run by Ruder and his beautiful daughter, Kathie, who serves the raucous university students who frequent the inn’s beer garden. Karl and Kathie are instantly captivated by each other despite their disparate stations. The Prince takes up residence at the inn in spite of Lutz’s protests, and soon becomes good friends with and joins the student corps of three fellow students: Detlef, Lucas, and von Asterberg. There will be a 20-minute intermission.

ACT II Four months have passed during which the Prince and Kathie’s affections have grown. Prince Karl and his entourage return uproariously to the inn after a night of drinking as a new day is dawning. A loving moment between Kathie and Karl is interrupted by the arrival of Princess Margaret and her mother, the Duchess. The Prince learns from them that the King has fallen ill and has ordered Karl’s immediate return to the castle for his betrothal to Princess Margaret. The Prince and Kathie make plans to run away to Paris together, but as she packs he is reminded of his royal duties as Prince. He leaves for Karlsberg promising Kathie his quick return and that he will write her every day until they are together again.

ACT III Some months later, a grand ball is being held in the Court of Karlsberg, which is alive with gossip. Karl Franz, who has since become King, is absent from the proceedings, saddened by a lack of correspondence from Kathie, and mourning the loss of his friend and tutor, Dr. Engel. The Princess is accompanied instead by Captain Tarnitz who loves her and in an effort to win her hand, tells her of Karl Franz’s love for Kathie. The Princess Margaret is not dissuaded from her fidelity to the King. Meanwhile, Karl learns that he has not heard from Kathie because his letters have been gone undelivered. He leaves in the middle of the night for Heidelberg.

ACT IV Princess Margaret has arrived at the Inn of the Three Golden Apples in advance of the King. After meeting Kathie, the two women console each other and share their grief over loving the same man. Karl Franz arrives shortly after, greeted heartily by his friends. He and Kathie share a loving goodbye, promising to remember each other and their love forever, before the King and Princess Margaret depart together.

Les Misérables les misérables

Synopsis Act I

1815, Toulon, France. Jean Valjean is released on parole from working on the chain gang, after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his hungry nephew. Valjean is shunned by society because he is an ex-convict, but is shown a great kindness by the Bishop that provides Valjean with a fresh start. 1823, Montreuil-sur-Mer. The Bishop’s kindness has allowed Valjean to establish himself as a wealthy factory owner and Mayor. Fantine, a factory worker, has been secretly sending money to the caretakers of her illegitimate daughter, Cosette. When another factory worker discovers her secret a fight ensues and Fantine is dismissed. A penniless Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and eventually her body to support Cosette. Police, headed by the now-Inspector Javert are summoned to an altercation between Fantine and an unruly customer. Valjean intercedes, and convinces the Inspector to release Fantine into his care. When Valjean displays his unnatural strength to save another man, Javert is convinced of Valjean’s true identity as the prisoner 24601 who broke parole, and falsely accuses another man of being the escaped convict. Valjean reveals himself to the court at the trial to save the man’s life. He visits Fantine at the hospital and promises the dying woman to find Cosette and care for her. Javert arrives to take Valjean back to prison. Valjean flees again. Valjean finds Cosette in Montfermeil. She is mistreated by her guardians, the Thénardiers, who run a sordid inn with their doted-upon daughter, Éponine. Valjean bargains with the caretakers for Cosette’s freedom and takes her away to Paris. 1832, Paris. In the midst of impending revolution, Valjean keeps a watchful eye in raising Cosette as he promised the dying Fantine. The Thénardiers now run a street gang in Paris and attempt to con a charitable Valjean, unaware of his identity. They are thwarted by the arrival of Javert, who also unaware of their identity, helps Valjean and Cosette escape. Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, agrees to help him find Cosette, whom he has fallen for after a chance meeting. In a small café a group of revolutionary students makes plans for their uprising. Marius enters, torn between his new-found love of Cosette and his conviction for the students’ cause. At Valjean’s home, Éponine has reunited Marius and Cosette who confess their love for each other.

Les Misérables les misérables

Éponine, although heartbroken, protects the pair and Valjean by thwarting a robbery attempt. Valjean, convinced that the obsessed Javert has discovered them, makes plans to flee once again. On the eve of the revolution, Marius has chosen to join the fight as does a disguised Éponine, the Thénardiers plan to exploit the coming battle, Valjean makes preparations to retreat into exile with Cosette, and the dogmatic Javert swears to bring prisoner 24601 to justice and thwart the student-led revolution as they all contemplate what tomorrow will bring. There will be a 20-minute intermission.

ACT II While the students assemble a barricade to make a stand, Javert infiltrates their ranks as a spy. Marius, having discovered Éponine among the rebels, sends her to deliver a letter declaring his love to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine returns to the barricade where she becomes the first casualty of the battle. Valjean arrives disguised as a soldier, looking for Marius and finds Javert being held prisoner by the rebels after being been exposed as an infiltrator. Valjean is given the chance to kill Javert, but instead assists his escape. Valjean has escaped to the sewers, carrying a wounded Marius to safety when he is discovered by Javert. Valjeans pleads for only one hour’s time to deliver Marius to a hospital, after which he will surrender himself to Javert. The Inspector reluctantly agrees, but his obstinate views of justice have been shattered by Valjean’s mercy and he kills himself. Marius is revived under Cosette’s care, unaware that Valjean was his rescuer following the battle. Valjean resigns himself to exile after revealing himself as an escaped convict to Marius, a truth he makes Marius promise to never reveal to Cosette. A few months later, Marius and Cosette marry. The reception is attended by the Thénardiers, who attempt to blackmail Marius when he sees through their transparent disguise. They finger his wife’s father as a murderer, claiming to have seen Valjean carrying a body through the sewers following the battle. They produce a ring they purloined from the body as evidence, but Marius recognizes the ring as his own and realizes that Valjean was his savior that day. Valjean is near death when he is visited by Fantine’s spirit who thanks him for caring for her daughter and promises him forgiveness in the eyes of God. Cosette and Marius arrive as Valjean is fading.
