A MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL BALLAM Dear Friends, Everything about this season is bigger than life: epic tales, profound messages, long-awaited celebrations. Three of our works deal with the timely subject of prejudice. Our nation was founded on Jefferson’s words that “all men are created equal,” yet it continues to be a painfully slow process to demonstrate that in practice. At Gettysburg, Lincoln called for a “new birth of freedom.” Imparting that freedom has continued to be a work in progress. May we rejoice that the bigotry and mistreatment of our own has lessened over time, and live in hope that it can soon be banished entirely from this great nation. Show Boat enlightens us about the post-Civil War rebuilding of a divided nation from 1887 to 1927. In 1927, this musical launched the new, totally American art form of Musical Theatre. Set during the Great Depression, Porgy and Bess compares suffocating oppression with the life-saving breath of hope to move forward. As most of us are the posterity of immigrants coming to this country, Ragtime illuminates the timely challenge and opportunity of immigration in the tapestry of turn-of-the-century America. I am excited about the Utah premiere of Puccini’s last completed work, Il Trittico. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, Puccini chose to set three one-act works as a trilogy concerning death: a passionate murder, an act of redemption and a comic view of managing the will of a character who dies as the curtain rises. Enduring a terminal disease that would take his life six years later brings a poignancy to a work that, because of its heroic resources is seldom performed in its entirety. The third work in which I play the title role has great personal meaning to me. I made my operatic debut half a century ago in the role of Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi. Some of my fondest performance memories are playing Luigi and Michele in Il Tabarro and Betto, Rinuccio and Schicchi, the notorious historical scoundrel in Gianni Schicci. In addition to these four masterworks we pay homage to two American icons, Cole Porter and John Philip Sousa, (who played on the Eccles Stage and rehearsed in the Dansante Building in 1927). The long-anticipated opening of the renovated Utah Theatre takes flight with the magic of Peter Pan as he whisks us off to Neverland. No musical could better convey the essence of this historic building being reborn in a new and expanded life. This monumental effort was made possible by the unbounded generosity of our friends Larry H. and Gail Miller, George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Utah State Legislature, Theodore and Elizabeth Schmidt, Roy and Carol Christensen and Zions Bank. The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ living in the Utah was a gift of John and Nancy Schellkopf and Mike and Shari Ohman. The magic of this season is unsurpassed in our 24-year history as we launch into our Silver Anniversary next year. Enjoy!

Peter Pan Synopsis Act I The nursery of the Darling home, circa 1900 The Darling household is bustling—Nana, the family dog, patiently tries to get the three children (Michael, John, and Wendy) to bed as Mr. and Mrs. Darling prepare to go out for the evening. Mr. Darling sentences Nana to spend the night downstairs despite protests from Mrs. Darling and the children, who go to sleep as their parents depart. Soon after, Tinker Bell, a fairy, and Peter Pan return to the Darling home in search of his lost shadow. Wendy awakens to find the boy, and is soon fascinated by tales of Neverland, Peter Pan’s island home. Peter, longing for a “mother” to sew him pockets and tell him stories, convinces Wendy to fly away with him after agreeing to take Michael and John along. 15-minute intermission Act II Neverland The magical home of Peter Pan is also home to magical creatures, his gang of Lost Boys, a rival tribe of natives led by the brave Tiger Lily, and a crew of Pirates captained by the nefarious Hook. Hook’s one ambition in life is to capture and kill Peter Pan, who cut off and fed his hand to a Crocodile who has haunted Hook ever since. The Lost Boys welcome their new members, electing Wendy “mother” and Pan “father” as Hook discovers their underground lair and

Peter Pan contrives a plan to get his revenge. His designs on the Lost Boys are unsuccessful, but they briefly capture Tiger Lily until Peter Pan, along with the native warriors, free her, initiating an accord between the two groups. Hook and his crew take advantage of a moment of weakness and successfully capture all the Lost Boys. Tinker Bell saves Pan’s life by drinking his medicine, which Hook has poisoned. 15-minute intermission Act III Hook’s Ship With all the Lost Boys about to walk the plank and Peter Pan considered dead, Hook and his crew revel in their triumph aboard the Jolly Roger. Cleverly, Peter Pan, the Natives, and the mystical creatures get the drop on Hook and end his reign once and for all. The nursery of the Darling home The Darling children return home, convincing their parents to adopt the Lost Boys who have returned from Neverland with them. Many years later Peter Pan returns to the nursery hoping to take Wendy back to Neverland for spring cleaning, unaware that time in Neverland moves much slower than in our world. Pan learns that Wendy has grown up and now has a daughter, Jane, who takes her mother’s place and flies off to her own adventures in Neverland.

Puccini’s Trilogy Synopsis Act I – Il Tabarro A barge on the Seine in Paris As a troupe of dock workers unload the vessel’s cargo, Michele gazes at the sunset and his wife, Giorgetta, works at the laundry. After a cold interaction with Giorgetta, Michele retires into the cabin as she offers wine to Tinca, Talpa, and Luigi for their hard work. A passing organ grinder provides music as Giorgetta shares a dance with Tinca, who can’t keep up and is replaced by Luigi. When Michele reemerges, the merriment ends and Giorgetta questions Michele about his somber mood. Frugola, wife of Talpa, arrives carrying a bag of objects she has salvaged through the day. Frugola displays her day’s finds to Giorgetta and shares her dreams of a new life in the country as Giorgetta and Luigi express their desire to return to their lives in the city of their childhood. As Frugola and Talpa depart, Giorgetta and Luigi share a romantic moment, confessing their love for each other. The two lovers make plans to meet later that evening when Michele has retired. Giorgetta will light a match from aboard the barge as a signal to Luigi. Michele attempts to regain Giorgetta’s love by reminiscing of days past before the death of their child. Unswayed, Giorgetta retires and Michele is left alone on the deck with his jealous thoughts. When he lights his pipe, Luigi mistakes it for Giorgetta’s signal and returns to the barge. Michele pounces upon Luigi, forcing him to confess his love for Giorgetta and sealing his fate. 15-minute intermission Act II – Suor Angelica A convent in the latter part of the 17th Century The Monitor reprimands two lay sisters who were late to chapel for not doing penance as Sister Angelica has done. Released to work at their chores, some of the sisters admit their lingering desires for worldly pleasures. When asked, Sister Angelica denies she has any such wants, but the other sisters know she has wished to receive word from her family for the past seven years. They heard Sister Angelica is a princess who made her vows as punishment. The Nursing Sister interrupts the inquiries, searching for Sister Angelica, whose knowledge of medicinal plants is needed to aid a sister who has been stung by wasps. Two porters return bringing alms they have gathered, asking the sisters about a resplendent coach outside of the convent gates. The visitor is the Princess, Sister Angelica’s aunt who took guardianship of Sister Angelica and her sister, Anna Viola, after the death of their parents. The Princess has come to announce that Anna Viola has become engaged and to force Sister Angelica to sign over her portion of the inheritance for having disgraced the family name. Sister Angelica pleads for information about her son, and learns that he died two years earlier. Broken, she agrees to sign the documents and is left alone to grieve. From her herbs and flowers, she creates and drinks a poison, intending to be reunited with her child in heaven. Too late, she realizes the sin she has committed in taking her own life and prays for her salvation with her final words. 15-minute intermission Act III – Gianni Schicchi Buoso Donati’s bedchamber, Florence, 1299 Family of the wealthy Buoso gather to mourn his death. Their exaggerated sobs dissolve as rumors are passed around the room that Buoso has left all his possessions to a convent of friars. Eager to prove the rumors wrong, the relatives tear apart Buoso’s bedchamber in search of the will. Rinuccio, Buoso’s nephew, find and holds the will ransom, pleading that if they all become rich through inheritance he will be allowed to marry Lauretta, the daughter of Gianni Schicchi—a union the family despises due to Schicchi’s low social standing. To the family’s dismay, the rumors are true and now they lament their own misfortune. Schicchi and Lauretta arrive, upsetting the family further as they want nothing to do with a commoner, but Rinuccio pleads for the family to trust in the cunning Schicchi. Disgusted with the intentions of the family, Schicchi first refuses to help, only agreeing to Lauretta’s pleas. Schicchi ingeniously climbs into bed, impersonating Buoso to successfully send away Doctor Spinelloccio who has arrived to check on his patient. Schicchi will impersonate Buoso and having called a lawyer will draw up a new will dividing Buoso’s fortune evenly amongst the family. They fight over most valuable of the assets: a house in Florence, a mule, and mills in Signa until they agree to leave the decision up to Schicchi. But Schicchi has designs to make sure everyone gets exactly what they deserve in the end.

Show Boat Synopsis Act I 1887 in Natchez, Mississippi Cap’n Andy Hawkes plies his showboat, the Cotton Blossom, up and down the Mississippi providing entertainment at each stop. He is accompanied by his wife, Parthy Ann, and his daughter, Magnolia. His troupe consists of a married dramatic duo, Steve Baker and Julie Laverne, and a comedic song and dance pair, Ellie May Chipley and Frank Schultz. During a rehearsal aboard the Cotton Blossom, it is discovered that Julie’s mother was black – making her marriage to a white man an illegal act in this part of the country at that time. The show in Natchez is doomed to close as Julie and Steve are forced to leave the boat. Gaylord Ravenal arrives, inadvertently answering Cap’n Andy’s prayers for a leading man, hoping to escape his dark past in Natchez by begging passage on the Cotton Blossom. Ravenal and Magnolia fall deeply in love as she takes Julie’s place as leading lady. 20-minute intermission Act II 1889 in Natchez, Mississippi Ravenal and Magnolia, now married and still starring on the Cotton Blossom, give birth to their daughter Kim. Ravenal, anxious to be independent from Magnolia’s parents and encouraged by his gambling successes, takes his wife and daughter to Chicago. 1899 in Chicago, Illinois Frank and Ellie, now a successful vaudeville act, happen upon Magnolia in a second-rate rooming house where she is now living with Ravenal. Kim, now 10 years old, is away at convent school. Ravenal has heavy gambling losses and leaves his wife and daughter in hopes their lives will be better without him. Frank and Ellie encourage Magnolia to audition at the Trocadero where they will soon open a new act. Magnolia’s audition isn’t going well, until a kind gesture by a friend from the past gets her hired and she opens on New Year’s Eve to rave reviews. 1927 in Natchez, Mississippi Magnolia’s career has thrived for the past 25 years and her daughter Kim has also chosen the family business, becoming a Broadway star. As mother and daughter return to visit the Cotton Blossom, Cap’n Andy has a surprise planned for them that leaves heartache and regret in the past.

Ragtime Synopsis Act I America at the turn of the 20th Century Ragtime revolves around three groups, White middle-class residents of New Rochelle, African Americans from Harlem, and European immigrants as they navigate the tense social, cultural, and political climate of the time. In New Rochelle, Father is leaving for a year on an expedition, leaving Mother in charge of their home and family. Younger Brother, searching for purpose in life, has become enthralled by a vaudevillian performer, Evelyn Nesbit, who coldly denies his advances, leaving him even more lost than before. Mother discovers a newborn African-American child buried in the garden, who was abandoned by a woman named Sarah. Mother opens her home to Sarah and the child. Tateh and his daughter, Little Girl, are two of many immigrants pouring into the country through Ellis Island. Inspired by the successful immigrant Harry Houdini, Tateh sets out to make a better life by selling silhouettes on the Lower East Side. His business failing, and outraged when a man tries to buy Little Girl, Tateh reaffirms that he will attain success. In Harlem, the popular musician Coalhouse Walker, Jr., tells the tale of a woman named Sarah who he has loved and lost, but having found out where she lives is determined to win her back. Coalhouse buys a Model T Ford and sets out for New Rochelle, meeting a group of hostile volunteer firemen along the way. Arriving at Mother’s home, Coalhouse is rejected by Sarah, but he returns each week wooing her with his songs and winning over the family’s affections. Father returns home from his expedition, troubled by the changes that have come to his house. Sarah returns to Coalhouse and together they dream of a beautiful future. Tateh is now working unfair hours in unfair conditions at a loom in a Lawrence, Mass., mill. Emma Goldman, a radical anarchist, speaks at a rally in Union Square attempting to raise a strike against the mill owners when Younger Brother happens by and is certain this cause is what he has been searching for. Tateh and the Little Girl flee as the resulting strike turns violent. Coalhouse encounters the volunteer firemen again, who destroy his car. Seeking justice, Coalhouse finds none through legal channels and postpones his marriage until justice is reached. Sarah pleads Coalhouse’s case to a visiting Vice Presidential candidate, but suspected of having a gun, is clubbed to death by police. Her funeral procession brings Whites, African Americans, and Immigrants together in mourning. 20-minute intermission Act II Outraged by Sarah’s death, Coalhouse seeks revenge. He is joined by several followers and sets fire to the firehouse, killing three men involved with vandalizing his car, and demands that the chief, Willie Conklin, be delivered to him for justice. Mother still cares for Sarah and Coalhouse’s baby, a burden Father resents. Meanwhile, Coalhouse and his men are ravaging the city. The New Rochelle family is incessantly harangued by the press and decides to escape to Atlantic City. Tateh is now a famous film director living in Atlantic City, and is working under the name Baron Ashkenazy. Back in Harlem, Younger Brother is moved by the plight of Coalhouse and seeks him out, offering his knowledge of explosives to assist in his cause. Coalhouse, his men, and Younger Brother take over J.P. Morgan’s Library and threaten to blow it up. Father is called back from Atlantic City to act as negotiator. Negotiations are heated as Coalhouse and his men have barricaded themselves inside the library. Booker T. Washington successfully urges Coalhouse to reconsider the repercussions of his actions, and Coalhouse negotiates safe passage for his men in exchange for Father as his hostage. Now alone with Father, Coalhouse asks about his son. Father assures Coalhouse that all will end well and Coalhouse surrenders for their reunited family.

Mass in B Minor (1749) Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) August 2, 7:30 p.m. Craig Jessop, Conductor American Festival Chorus Craig Jessop, Music Director Utah Festival Orchestra and Soloists

Soprano I Soprano II Alto Tenor Bass

Jasmine Habersham Sarai Cole Sarah-Nicole Ruddy Timothy Stoddard Earl Wellington Hazell

A pinnacle of western classical music, Bach’s Mass in B Minor is considered by many to be J.S. Bach’s greatest and most complex work. Described by music scholars and critics as “remarkable,” “profound,” and “the Greatest Musical Work of All Times and All People,” the Baroque Era masterwork consists of more than two dozen choral and solo numbers—choruses, arias, and duets. Some of the movements feature violin and other instruments in solo roles. Italian musicologist Alberto Basso characterizes the Mass as “the most astounding spiritual encounter between the worlds of Catholic glorification and the Lutheran cult of the cross.” Bach wrote the component parts of his Mass in B Minor between 1724 and 1749, but did not live to hear the complete work prior to his death in 1750.
