Mayor Tom Barrett signs 2014 City Budget

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett signed the City’s 2014 Budget at an unusual location Thursday, November 7, 2013, a city-owned taxforeclosed house. The location highlights one of the most important initiatives in next year’s fiscal plan, the Mayor’s Strong Neighborhoods Investment Plan. This $11.7-million effort uses a set of strategies to prevent and mitigate the negative effects of foreclosures as well as revitalize and renew affected properties and neighborhoods. Wisconsin Jobs Now volunteers organize and educate residents on health insurance information By: Raina J. Johnson Special to The Milwaukee Times Wisconsin Jobs Now is a non-profit organization whose mission is to fight income inequality from the bottom up and building stronger communities throughout Wisconsin. On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, Wisconsin Jobs Now held a health information fair at their offices located at 1862 W. Fond du Lac Avenue in Milwaukee. The fair was planned by Wisconsin Jobs Now block captains - all of whom are volunteer leaders. The event was co-sponsored by the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin and the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Executive Director of Wisconsin Jobs Now Jennifer Epps-Addison praised the block captains. “Our block captains view access

to healthcare as a fundamental right and want to make sure everybody in their community has the opportunity to take their children to the doctor when they are sick, to take care of medical conditions before they turn into emergencies, to just have the peace of mind that having health insurance provides to someone. So we know the block captains are going to remain committed to ensuring that as many people as they can possibly educate get educated about the Affordable Care Act. But at the end of the day, they also believe it is the responsibility of our elected officials and of our governor to provide folks with the information they need to protect themselves and to cover their families. That has not been happening, and while, we’re happy to step up and play a role in that, we still fundamentally believe that our elected officials and

our governor should be ensuring the welfare of citizens in Wisconsin,” she said. According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation website, in Wisconsin, Governor Walker did not accept the $37.7 million in federal money to help develop a state-based health insurance exchange, so that residents could access subsidized and non-subsidized health care and other state-based programs. So the onus now has fallen on the federal government to run a health insurance exchange in Wisconsin, which began October 1, 2013. At the fair, participants were given the opportunity to get information from various organizations including Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, City of Milwaukee Health Department, Children’s Hospital, Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative, and others. Partici-

pants were able to enroll in an insurance plan through the HealthCare.gov website, which has been plagued with issues since the rollout began on October 1. Epps-Addison commented, “We have folks who are using HealthCare.gov right now and it seems to be working fine. But in the event that there are problems, there are paper applications and we’re prepared to fill those out and mail those in. In addition, Wisconsin Jobs Now has a certified application counselor on staff and that person is available to any member of the community who wants to come in and find out what their options are under the affordable care act, they can come in at any time to get enrolled.” Open enrollment in the Affordable Care Act ends on March 31, 2014. Coverage can begin as soon as January 1, 2014.

“Christian Women with the Courage to Stand” (II Timothy 1:7) was the anniversary theme of Bethesda Baptist Church, 2909 N. 20th Street, Annual Women’s Day celebration held on Sunday, November 10, 2013. The Devotional Message speaker was Sister Gertrude Rembert. To a large crowd, Sister Rembert told a story about her co-worker who asked: ‘Who are we in the church, who are we?’ And she replied, “We are the pretenders, we get up in the morning, we wash our face, we brush our teeth, we comb our hair, we prepare ourselves for church. And then we think and grab this mask, and we put this mask on, so you can’t see my pain, you can’t see my hurt, you can't see my tears when I come in here, because I’m the great pretender. I don’t want you to see who I am, God wants us to take off this mask. He wants us to take off this mask. He wants to see the real us. He wants to fix us.” Worship in dance was performed by RLS & Lambs Praise Dancers and the Message of the gospel was delivered by Bethesda’s First Lady Sister Etharine Melton-Sims. The Rev. Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church celebrates 61st Church Anniversary

“A Church Built on a Solid Foundation” (Matthew 7:25) was the Sixty-First Annual Church Anniversary Celebration theme for Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 1717 W. Meinecke Ave., on Sunday, November 10, 2013. Mt. Carmel was organized in July 1952 by Rev. Odell McGlothian, along with his wife, Sister Gloria McGlothian, Sister Annie Ruffin and one other individual who met at 1436 North Third Street and formed a mission. Witnessing an increase in membership, Mt. Carmel was licensed by the National Baptist State Congress. The congregation later moved to its present location in 1955. After Rev. McGlothian was called to a church in East Chicago, IN, Rev. John H. Brent, who was a

member of the Pastoral Board at Metropolitan Baptist Church, was chosen to shepherd Mt. Carmel and he served for 35 years. Rev. Brent announced his retirement in 1989, and for the second time in the church’s history, Mt. Carmel was searching for a pastor. The Lord sent Rev. Dr. Hugh Davis, Jr. This year’s Church Anniversary Speaker was Pastor Phillip D. Simpson of Cathedral of Praise Church. Pictured (from left) are: Sister Marine Durham, Mt. The Missionary Society of St. Mark AME Church, 1616 W. Atkinson Ave., held its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, December 9, 2013. This year’s bazaar attracted 18 vendors who showcased a variety of hand made products produced by local merchants. “The vendors come from the community and the bazaar offers them an opportunity to display and sell their products,” said Helen Harris. She went on to say their attempt is to keep “more dollars in our community and help the vendors prosper and grow.” Vendors paid $20.00 each to have a booth. And while the vendor aspect of the bazaar continues to evolve, Harris said, more people are willing to participate. Proceeds from this not-for-profit event aids outreach programs for the needy, elderly and poor. Honoring our veterans and military personnel (week 3) Items that range from scarves to writing our military heroes are sent to troops through various national organizations to show gratitude and appreciation for their tireless service. There are many local organizations that strive to make an impact on a soldier’s life, one of which is Honor Our Military, Inc., through their Support Our Troops Division. This organization has been in operation since March 2013. According to Jeff Bukowski, President of the Troops Division of Honor Our Military, Inc., they have sent much needed items to our troops which to date approximate 255,000 lbs. of care packages, totaling 13,882 boxes. Over 1000 soldiers each have received a box a month for as long as they were oversees. Do-

nations of items are always appreciated, some of which include: • Metal canned food items – soups, pastas, fruit, salsas, chip dips, beef stew, cheese spreads, tuna and chicken snack kits, nuts. • Plastic container foods – peanut butter, raisins, microwaveable foods, individual serving fruit cups. • Snack foods – pretzels, peanuts, beef jerky, sausage sticks, Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos, snack crackers, trail mix. • Other food items – powdered drink mix, hard candies, cookies, chewing gum. • Hygiene products – razors, shampoo, liquid shower soap, small size baby powder, small size foot powder, sunscreen, artificial tears, nasal spray. • Games/recreation – DVDs, CDs, hand held electronic games, AA and AAA

batteries, travel sized board games, current magazines. • Miscellaneous – socks and postage. Volunteers are always needed to: • Assist in the set up and take down of collections and fundraising events • Assist in the transportation of donations • Pack boxes to send to our troops • Assist with shipping of boxes The Support Our Troops

Open Door Christian Worship Center hosts Pastor's 5th Year Anniversary Celebration

The parishioners of The Open Door Christian Worship Center Church hosted their Fifth Year Pastor's Celebration Services honoring Senior Pastor Apostle Kenneth Lock, Sr. and Prophetess Michele Lock on Sunday, November 10, 2013. The celebration services theme was: “Examples of Character and True Leadership” (Hebrews 6:12). Minister Nicky Knight was the Mistress of Ceremony. Remarks were made by Minister Tiara Rogers, Shawntiara McDade and Deacon Trevon Lennix. Also on program were the Open Door Adult Choir and the Praise of Excellence Praise Dancers. Bishop J. Time Warner Cable connects a million minds with annual STEMfest On Saturday, November 9, 2013 over 4,000 children and adults attended Time Warner Cable’s 5th Annual STEMfest at Discovery World, including more than 1,000 Girl Scout troop members and leaders from Southeast Wisconsin. All those attending received free admission to Discovery World, which included all the special STEMfest exhibits set up for this event. Time Warner Cable’s STEMfest was created as part of its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative to engage youth in hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Time Warner Cable invited 20 STEM partners from the local community to be a part of the event to showcase ways that their organization engages kids in STEM learning opportunities. The children actively participated in discovery learning activities with each of the STEM partners. Research conducted in Milwaukee found that the majority of Milwaukee adults agree that STEM education is important for today’s youth to be successful in the future. However, most are also concerned that youth are falling behind in obtaining adequate math and science skills, and that the U.S. is losing its global competitive advantage related to these areas.

The Milwaukee Fire Department delivered coats to nearly 4,000 students in nine MPS schools this week. This morning, MFD Assistant Chief Gerald Washington and MFD union president Dave Seager joined MPS Board of School Directors Larry Miller and Mark Sain to kick off the “Week of Warmth” with a delivery of coats to students at Pierce Elementary School. Milwaukee

Bucks mascot Bango was also there to hand out pairs of tickets to a Milwaukee Bucks game. Last year, MFD donated 1,000 new coats to MPS students as part of the “Coats for Kids” campaign. Help make sure all of our students have a winter coat this year by making a donation to Coats for Kids.

Two high-profile venues are playing host to stunning artwork created by the students at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School, one of six International Baccalaureate schools in the MPS family. Visitors to the rotunda at Milwaukee City Hall, 200 E. Wells Street, have the chance to see Reagan students’ moving, honest, self-reflective photo collages and emotional essays that reflect the joy, pain and resilience of Milwaukee youth. The work is the result of a creative arts alliance between awardwinning photographer Paul Calhoun and KnowThyself, a character development and creative expression program for middle and high school students in 10 MPS schools. The “Voices of the Young Showcase” is on display at City Hall from November 4 through November 16. City Hall is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Coenzyme Q10: Breakthrough with CoQ (part 2) Supplemental CoQ10 not only improves the quality of life, it also saves lives

Coenzyme Q10 has been called the miracle nutrient of the 21st century. It has been shown to energize the body, strengthen the heart, revitalize the immune system, control periodontal disease, normalize blood pressure, overcome infertility, reverse the effects of aging, and more. A wealth of heart health Thousands of studies have shown that CoQ10 is an indisputable heart remedy. It has been used successfully to treat a wide variety of cardiovascular disorders from angina and arrhythmia to congestive heart failure and high blood pressure (a leading risk factor for heart disease). Since more CoQ10 is found in heart tissue than in any other muscle of the body, it is not surprising to learn that deficiencies are commonly found in heart patients. The late Dr. Karl Folkers is recognized as the father of CoQ10 research in the U.S. Working with a Japanese colleague, Folkers found CoQ10

to deficiencies in the heart tissue of about 75 percent of all heart patients. The two researchers found that heart patients had 25 percent lower CoQ10 levels than healthy people. Ailing hearts always show deficiencies of CoQ10. From this, Dr. Follkers concluded that lack of CoQ10 results in heart disease. The good news is that using CoQ10 supplements has healing effects in these patients. In 1986, Physician, scientist, and author Emile G. Bliznakov, MD, wrote, "Patients who were hardly able to move because of congestive heart failure ... are able once more to look to a new, active future through CoQ10." Ten years later, in a landmark study published by the well-known cardiologist Stephen T. Sinatra, American Journal of Cardiology (1985), confirmed these observations researchers reported the effects of CoQ10 from his experience of treating

thousands of heart patients. Here are some examples of the benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in establishing heart health: • 80 patients took CoQ10 daily for 12 weeks. For 71 of them, blood pumped more efficiently, shortness of breath was reduced, and and muscle strength was increased. • Twelve patients with advanced congestive heart failure and a poor response to conventional treatment were given CoQ10 daily for seven months. They reported feeling less tired, having an increase tolerance for activity, no longer experiencing

shortness of breath at rest. • Thirty-four patients with severe congestive cardiomyopathy received CoQ10 daily. After two years, 62 percent had survived compared to only 25 percent of similar patients receiving conventional treatment. • The last condition can be so severe that the afflicted must remain sedentary. In this situation, supplementary CoQ10 can improve the heart's performance and strength without exercise. It follows that CoQ10 supplements would be a good idea for any sedentary person. In a landmark study published by the American Journal of Cardiology (1985), researchers reported the effects of CoQ10 in the treatment of angina pectoris. In this disease, constricted arteries are not able to deliver enough oxygen to the heart during emotional excitement or exercise. When given CoQ10 supplementation for only four weeks, the number of their attacks was cut in

half. Blood pressure has been lowered without the use of medication by simply supplementing with CoQ10. One typical study shows the subject average as 141/97 being lowered to an average of 126/90 after only two months of supplementation. This wonderful nutrient is not only useful for treating heart disease and high blood pressure, it can also be utilized to protect the heart from further damage, defend the heart from potentially toxic drugs, and improve heart function. Of course, it is also useful in maintaining heart health. Unfortunately, after many years of availability and ample scientific verification, coenzyme Q10 is still not widely used medically. Heart disease remains the number one killer of Americans. Continued next week

Study links walking to lower breast cancer risk By Stacy Simon Researchers from the American Cancer Society have found that walking at least 7 hours per week is associated with a 14 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. This finding is consistent with many other studies that show regular exercise can help women lower their risk of breast cancer. New information in this study

found the exercise helped women whether or not they were overweight, and helped them even if they gained weight during the study. It was published early online October 4, 2013 in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, and Prevention. The researchers looked at breast cancer status and exercise levels in 73,615 postmenopausal women taking part in the CPS-II Nutritional Cohort, a study begun by

the American Cancer Society in 1992. During the 17-year study, 4,760 of the women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Among the women who reported walking as their only activity, those who walked at least 7 hours per week had a 14 percent lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who walked 3 or fewer hours per week. The women walked at a “moderate” pace – about 3 miles per

hour. The most active women – those who walked and did more vigorous exercise – had a 25 percent lower risk of breast cancer compared to the least active. “Our results clearly support an association between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer, with more vigorous activity having a stronger effect,” said Alpa Patel, PhD, leader of the study and American Cancer Society strategic director of Cancer Prevention Study-3. “Our findings are particularly relevant, as people struggle with conflicting information about how much activity they need to stay healthy. Without any other recreational physical activities, walking on average of at least one hour per day was associated with a modestly lower risk of breast cancer. More strenuous and longer activities lowered the risk even more.” Women in the study benefited from physical activity whether they were at a healthy weight, overweight,

or obese, and even if they gained weight during the study. They also benefited whether or not they were taking menopausal hormone therapy. Exercise reduced the risk of both estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative cancers. (In estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, the female hormone estrogen promotes the growth of the cancer. Hormone therapy for breast cancer works by blocking the effects of estrogen or lowering estrogen levels. Estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer is often harder to treat because it is not likely to respond to hormone therapy.) The American Cancer Society recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, preferably spread throughout the week. Moderate-intensity activities are those at the level of a brisk walk. Vigorousintensity activities increase your heart rate and breathing, and make you sweat. Examples include running, aerobic dance, and soccer. How exercising lowers breast cancer risk is not fully understood. It’s thought that physical activity regulates hormones including estrogen and insulin, which can fuel breast cancer growth.

GI Bill eases college costs for military families As Veteran's Day approaches, this is a good time to remind our active duty service members and veterans about the many education assistance benefits available to them through the G.I. Bill and other government programs. Here's a rundown of a few of the more commonly used programs: • The Post 9/11 GI Bill is more flexible and generally offers more generous benefits than earlier GI Bills. It provides up to 36 months of support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of active duty after September 11, 2001, or those with a serviceconnected disability after 30

days. An honorable discharge is required. • Approved training includes undergraduate and graduate degrees, and vocational/technical/on-the-job training, among others. You will be eligible for benefits for 15 years from your last period of active duty of at least 90 consecutive days. • This program covers 100 percent of tuition and fees for in-state students at public institutions, paid directly to the school. For those attending private or foreign schools, it will pay up to $19,198.31 per academic year (sometimes more in certain states). • If you attend a costlier private school – or a pub-

lic school as a non-resident – you also may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program, where schools voluntarily fund tuition expenses exceeding the highest public in-state undergraduate rate. The institution can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses and the Veteran's Administration will match

the amount. • The 9/11 GI Bill also will pay a books and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year, and a monthly housing allowance generally comparable to the military Basic Allowance for Housing for a military pay grade E-5 with dependents, based on the ZIP code for your school. Another advantage of this newer GI Bill: Armed Forces members with at least six years' service can transfer some or all of their benefits to their spouse and/or children. Here are the basic rules: You must agree to four additional years of service. (Special rules apply if standard policy precludes you from serving four more years

or you're eligible for retirement). Because the clock starts ticking from the date you elect to participate – and you can't enroll additional beneficiaries after leaving the military – it's best to sign up all family members right away. You can always go back and change allocation percentages or remove beneficiaries at any time until the benefits are used. Spouses may begin using transferred benefits right away; however children must wait until you've served the full 10 years. You and your spouse must use the benefits within 15 years of your leaving the military; children must use them by age 26. Montgomery GI Bill. This older version of the GI Bill may still be available if you didn't already opt for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. You're eligible if you started active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, served continuously for three years, are honorably discharged and had your pay reduced by $100 a month for the first 12 months. (There's a separate plan for reservists.) For most people, this program is less generous than the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Benefits typically expire 10 years after military separation and are not transferrable to family members; plus, you pay tuition and fees upfront and are later reimbursed. Or maybe the bluesy tones made you sway, or the sitar, the drums, the listen-to-me voice. You were so young, and so were the performers who brought you to that point. Was it coincidence that they all died so early, or was it something more sinister? Read “27: A History of the 27 Club Through the Lives of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse” by Howard Sounes, and find out… Call it tragic, call it a shock, but it was probably no surprise to most: Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Jones, Cobain and Winehouse – each, arguably, a genius in the musical industry and each dead at age 27. What is it about rock & roll and that age? Is there something mysterious afoot? No, says Sounes. The 27 Club is a coincidence - a major one, true, and terribly sad, but a coincidence nonetheless. Statistics show that dying at age 27 is not uncommon, especially when it comes to hard-living, drugtaking rock stars. Still, in addition to commonality of age, Jones, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, and Winehouse experienced other parallels. All, says Sounes, seemed to be “weary of life by the end.” As children, they were intelligent, and five of them naturally gravitated toward music. All had rocky (or nonexistent) relationships with their parents. All six suffered from mental illness or depression and were substance abusers. Jones had been “living dangerously for years” be-

fore drowning in his swimming pool. Hendrix died under mysterious circumstances and ever-conflicting stories. Joplin signed a new will three days before her death, perhaps contemplating suicide. Morrison, fearing a jail sentence in Miami, flew to Paris, where he eventually overdosed on heroin. Before he committed suicide, Cobain expressed hope that his toddler-daughter wouldn’t follow in his footsteps. And Winehouse literally “drank herself to death.” And though Sounes indicates that most of these six musicians “had a horror” of being alone, alone is how

they died. The first time you heard "Light My Fire" or "Me & Bobby McGee," it was probably from a scratchy record and cheap speakers. “27” brings those memories back

– with a lot less static. This is, in fact, almost a read-in-one-sitting kind of book, so thoroughly fascinating is author Howard Sounes in his method of storytelling. We start with the death

of the most recent inductee into the “club,” then travel around and back. Along the way, Sounes explains what led each to the (often bitter) end, then he gives readers a shock: the 27 Club is a megacoincidence, but the six here are the tip of the tragic iceberg… I very much enjoyed this book, not just for its musical history but for the sounds it put inside my head. I think that if you’re a fan of classic rock or blues, or if you just want a good look at stardom gone wrong, “27” gets five stars.

The Rev. Dr. Archie L. and First Lady Jeanette Ivy were honored by the congregation of New Hope Baptist Church, 2433 W. Roosevelt Drive, with a Pastoral Appreciation service held on Sunday, November 10, 2013. “Our Shepherd: Equipping God’s People for Kingdom Building” (Ephesians 4:11-12 NKJV) was the Appreciation Service theme. Rev. Terry J. West, Sr., was the presiding clergy and Brother Garrett Newsom gave a tribute and described Pastor Ivy as a “Reflection.” He defined “reflection” as a return of light or sound waves off a surface, an image given back by a reflecting surface, a thought, an idea or opinion formed or a remark made as a result of careful thinking. He summed up saying: “Pastor Ivy reflects the image of a Godly man at all times, which must be difficult dealing with so many personalities of saved and unsaved people he encounters gracefully, but with a smile.” Pastor Dr. Russell B. Williamson of Zion Hill Baptist Church was the Pastoral Appreciation speaker. Members of the Pastoral Appreciation team were: Ministry Team Leader Sister Cheryl A. Cook, Sister Geraldine Britton, Sister Marion Ellis, Sister Hattie Hamdlin, Sister Monica McKenzie, Sister Kimberlye Quinn and Sister Mary Williamson.

Celebrating National Hospice Month

Making Memories that Last AseraCare® provides hospice services to those facing life-limiting illness. Patients and their families are able to use their remaining time together to make memories that last. Calling hospice early may be a difficult choice, but the benefits of receiving this supportive care early are immeasurable. In the below excerpt from The Journey Home: Stories of Compassion and Inspiration from AseraCare Hospice, Lisa experiences the comfort that hospice offers during her mother’s last year of life.

Getting to Know Mirna Choosing hospice early can actually add wonderful memories and change the lives of survivors. Lisa’s 89-year-old mother, Mirna, was diagnosed with cancer. What makes this story exceptional is the care given by and relationship developed between Mirna’s family and the AseraCare team led by Lori, a certified hospice and palliative care registered nurse, and Mary, a home health aide and certified nursing assistant, who supported Mirna in her last 51 weeks of life. Lisa knew about hospice care after a close friend experienced the benefits of hospice during the endof-life stage of her mother. Lisa remembered the impact that the hospice philosophy had on her friend and knew it was time to consider hospice care for her own mother when Mirna chose to stop taking treatments. Lisa then went to their physician, who confirmed that Mirna was eligible for hospice care. Lori came to Mirna’s home to determine her needs. At that point, Mirna was reluctant to accept hospice care as she felt she could “get along all right.” And, Lisa said, “She probably could have,” but it was important to Lisa, and to the AseraCare team, that they get to know who Mirna was before the disease progressed further. Mirna’s brief reluctance quickly turned into a desire to see her many hospice friends, including Mary and Lori. In no time, Lisa said, “Mother was asking, ‘When is Mary coming?’ or ‘Where is Lori?’ They became a part of the family.” During most of a year, Mirna received hospice care in four locations: in her home, then in Lisa’s home, in a nursing home and, finally, at an end-of-life residence. Wherever she went, AseraCare followed. “Mother received the full benefit of hospice; it went everywhere with her. We never had to change staff. It was always the same people and continuity of care. Wherever she called home, hospice went,” said Lisa. Even on the weekends, somebody was there. It was clear to Mirna’s family that this wasn’t “just a job” for members of her AseraCare team. The AseraCare team didn’t stop supporting Mirna’s family after her death. Lisa and the hospice team stayed in regular contact with one another. Lori and Mary, as well as others from the hospice team, attended Mirna’s funeral, and they regularly checked with Lisa to see how she was grieving.
