Tina Turner, the American-born singer who left a hardscrabble farming community and abusive relationship to become one of the top recording artists of all time, died on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the age of 83.

She died peacefully after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, her representative said.

Turner began her career in the 1950s during the early years of rock 'n' roll and evolved into an MTV phenomenon.

In the video for her chart-topping song "What's Love Got to Do with It," in which she called love a "second-hand emotion," Turner

epitomized 1980s style as she strutted through New York City streets with her spiky blond hair, wearing a cropped jean jacket, mini skirt and stiletto heels.

With her taste for musical experimentation and bluntly worded ballads, Turner gelled perfectly with a 1980s pop landscape in which music fans valued electronically produced sounds and scorned hippie-era idealism.

Sometimes nicknamed the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," Turner won six of her eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s. In that decade she landed a dozen songs in the Top 40, including "Typical Male," "The Best," "Private Dancer" and "Better Be Good

to Me." Her 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro drew 180,000 people, which remains one of the largest concert audiences for any single performer. By then, Turner had been free from her marriage to guitarist Ike Turner for a decade.

The superstar was forthcoming about the abuse she suffered from her former husband during their marital and musical partnership in the 1960s and 1970s. She described bruised eyes, busted lips, a broken jaw and other injuries that repeatedly sent

her to the emergency room.

"Tina's story is not one of victimhood but one of incredible triumph," singer Janet Jackson wrote about Turner, in a Rolling Stone issue that placed Turner at No. 63 on a list of the top 100 artists of all time.

"She's transformed herself into an international sensation - an elegant powerhouse," Jackson said.

In 1985, Turner gave a fictional turn to her reputation as a survivor. She played the ruthless leader of an outpost in a nuclear wasteland, acting opposite Mel Gibson in the third installment in the Mad Max franchise, "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."

Northcott Neighborhood House kicks off 52nd Annual Juneteenth with “I Am Juneteenth” press conference

On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, Northcott Neighborhood House (NNH) Executive Director Tony Kearney and the Juneteenth Planning Committee hosted the "I Am Juneteenth" celebration kickoff press conference at Northcott, 2460 N 6th St. NNH Executive Director Tony A. Kearney, Sr. announced all of the Juneteenth festivities.

Kearney said, “This year our theme is 'I AM JUNETEENTH,' Juneteenth is for

Most of Turner's hit songs were written by others, but she enlivened them with a voice that New York Times music critic Jon Pareles called "one of the more peculiar instruments in pop."

"It's three-tiered, with a nasal low register, a yowling, cutting middle range and a high register so startlingly clear it sounds like a falsetto," Pareles wrote in a 1987 concert review.

Actor Angela Bassett, who was nominated for an Academy Award for playing Turner in the 1993 film "What's Love Got to Do with It," said she was "humbled to have helped show her to the world.

"She gave us her whole self," Bassett said in a statement."Tina Turner is a gift that will always be 'simply the best'."

Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones said he was saddened by Turner's death, calling her "inspiring, warm, funny and generous.

"She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her," Jagger said.

Canadian singer Bryan Adams, who paired with Turner on the 1985 single "It's Only Love," said "the world just lost one hell of a powerhouse of a woman."

U.S. President Joe Biden described Turner as a "once-in-a-generation talent" and said her "personal strength was remarkable."

"Overcoming adversity, and even abuse, she built a career for the ages and a life and legacy that were entirely hers," Biden said in a statement.

'One-horse town'

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939, in the rural Tennessee community of Nutbush, which she described in her 1973 song "Nutbush City Limits" as a "quiet little old community, a one-horse town."

Her father worked as an overseer on a farm and her mother left the family when the singer was 11 years old, according to the singer's

everyone, it is American history and today we will be announcing new venues to celebrate during the Juneteenth festivities."

Juneteenth Day commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The worldwide event, dating back to June 19, 1865, began when the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, TX with the news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. The Juneteenth Day Celebration in Milwaukee is among the oldest and longest running such parades in the

nation and this year marks the 52nd anniversary.

We want all of Milwaukee to learn the history of Juneteenth and that is why we are one of the largest and longest running Juneteenth celebrations in the country, Kerney explained.

This year TMJ4 will be televising live and streanming the Juneteenth Jubilee Parade starting at 9 a.m. on Juneteenth Day and there

will be four zones during the street festaval during the festival this year: Kid's Zone, Senior Zone, Teen Zone and Veteran's Zone.

citizen of Switzerland.

She battled a number of health problems after retiring and in 2018 she faced a family tragedy, when her oldest son, Craig, took his life at age 59 in Los Angeles. Her younger son Ronnie died in December 2022.

Her name continued to draw audiences years after her retirement. Musical stage show "TINA: The Tina Turner Musical," with Adrienne Warren initially acting and singing the star's life story, was a hit first in London's West End in 2018, and later on Broadway, and is still running. And in 2021 HBO released a documentary about her life, "Tina."

2018 memoir "My Love Story." As a teenager, she moved to St. Louis to rejoin her mom.

Ike Turner discovered her when she was 17 when she grabbed the mic to sing at his club show in St. Louis in 1957.

The band leader later recorded a hit song, "A Fool In Love," with his protégé and gave her the stage name Tina Turner, before the two married in Tijuana, Mexico.

Tina employed her strong voice and strenuously rehearsed dance routines as lead vocalist in an ensemble called the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. She collaborated with members of rock royalty, including The Who and Phil Spector, in the 1960s and 1970s and appeared on the cover of issue two of Rolling Stone magazine in 1967.

Ike and Tina Turner bounced between record labels, owing much of their commercial success to a relentless touring schedule. Their biggest hit was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."

Turner left her husband one night in 1976 on a tour stop in Dallas, after he pummeled her during a car ride and she struck back, according to her memoir. Their divorce was finalized in 1978.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Ike and Tina Turner in 1991, calling them "one of the most formidable live acts in history." Ike Turner died in 2007.

Europe bound

After leaving her husband, Turner spent years struggling to regain the limelight, releasing solo albums and singles that flopped and gigging at corporate conferences.

In 1980, she met new manager Roger Davies, an Australian music executive who went on to manage her for three decades. That led to a solo No. 1 - "What's Love Got to Do With It" - and then in 1984 her album "Private Dancer" landed her at the top of the charts.

"Private Dancer" went on to become Turner's biggest album, the capstone of a career in which she sold more than 200 million records in total.

In 1985 Turner met German music executive Erwin Bach, who became her longterm partner, and in 1988 she moved to London, beginning a decades-long residency in Europe. She released two studio albums in the 1990s that sold well, especially in Europe, recorded the theme song for 1995 Bond movie "GoldenEye," and staged a successful world tour in 2008 and 2009.

After that, she retired from show business. She married Bach, relinquishing her U.S. citizenship and becoming a

Being Frank

There have been several cases of teens overdosing in the USA over the past few years. The various derivatives of opium-based drugs has permeated US society on all levels. Poor African American junkies are not the only people overdosing on drugs. There are white middle- and upper- class teens consuming various drugs and overdosing. The last few years the US began stating there is an opioid problem in the country. White people are beginning to understand how it feels to have their community bombarded with drugs. Welcome to the world African Americans have lived in since the 1940’s.

I was recently talking to a Caucasian female about an incident that involved some teens overdosing at a school. This woman was asking how could this happen? I told her, “Welcome to the world Black people have lived in for decades.” The woman was puzzled. I asked her, “How could all these illegal drugs get into the African American community?” The

Hope you enjoy your stay

woman just looked at me. I nodded at her look and continued, “The majority of black people did/do not have access to jets to fly to South America for the cocaine or to Central Asia for opium. Yet, for decades there has been an influx of illegal addictive drugs in African American communities. How is this possible?” By this time the woman was staring at me which led to a smile from me. This woman reaffirmed what I already knew. White people do not get it or refuse to accept the atrocities that white society has perpetrated on African Americans.

Some people will say white ignorance comes from the banning of Critical Race Theory. This may be true in the future. This woman was at least in her fifties. The concept that became Critical Race Theory was created in the 1980’s. This woman had probably graduated from high school before the concept was formed. She simply represents the majority of white people in the USA. The issues that faced African

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

Americans did not concern her. So what if African Americans were dying over crack cocaine in the ghetto, that had nothing to do with her. Heroin junkies overdosing in poor neighborhoods meant nothing to her. To her, like to many white Americans, this was a snippet on the TV news that showed the savageness of African Americans. What did this crack/drug epidemic have to do with her white life? Nothing.

Fast forward to the 2020’s. Fentanyl is on the scene. Fentanyl seems to have no boundaries and has found

a path to the suburbs. In all truth, there have always been drugs in white suburbs. There has never been one like Fentanyl. Fentanyl used mixed cocaine or heroin can cause the average person to overdose very quickly. White people are dying from these overdoses. The number of overdoses has skyrocketed in the USA. Many of this increased number are white people. Now the US has a problem; white people are dying. Now people like this sheltered white woman have to pay attention because it may be their relative who overdoses. Welcome to the world white society has created for African Americans.

In all honesty, you can’t blame the average white person for not understanding the fact that the drug problem they face is one they created. The average white

person lives in a world created via TV and media which forms a protective bubble around them. The school system re-enforces this protective bubble via exaggerations about how great white people are. The average white person will never understand that you can’t keep pumping drugs in one area and not have them spread to another. White people will never understand the fact that the reason their lives can be whatever they dream is because their people have created a nightmare for others.

African Americans, do not lose compassion. Also, do not waste time explaining to whites the issues African Americans face. The average white person has been duped and needs their illusion. White people will never understand the issues, but they are reaping the consequences of their actions.

Ruth Bradley-McNeely-Wells celebrates 104th birthday

On Sunday, May 14, 2023, Ruth Bradley-McNeely-Wells celebrated her 104th birthday with family, friends and church family at St. Matthew CME. Church, 7500 N 76th St. Born on May 16, 1919 in St. Joseph, LA to Louise Winn-Bradley and Alfred Bradley, Sr., on a 60-acre farm owned by her father, the first African American to own his farm outright in the parish.

Ruth would cook for her parents, siblings and the farm workers. She could not work the fields as her doctor said she was allergic to the hot sun. While in high school, Ruth would be put in charge of cooking when dignitaries would visit. She was also a popular guard while playing basketball, as her team lost only 1 game in 3 years. After graduation, Ruth moved north, following her siblings. She would marry the late Charles Thomas McNeely, Sr. This union was blessed with two children, R.L. and Tracey Louise. She would also lovingly raised a step-son, the late Charles Louis, Jr.

For 17 years, Ruth taught the course Cooking for Fun, which was sponsored by the Mott Foundation

of Flint, MI and offed at many Flint public schools and the youth home of Genessee County, MI. After retirement, she and her good friend, Dorothy Cheatom, operated a cake and pie business. Ruth would also author a cook book inspired by her son R.L., Ruth's E-Z Cooking Recipes: An Autobiographical Cookbook, sold nationwide and in Europe. Ruth also catered many events for family and friends.

Ruth would find love again with the late Emmett Wells on September 7, 2007. After the loss of Emmett, Ruth moved to Menominee Falls to live with son R.L. and later to Milwaukee to live with her daughter, Tracey Louise. While living in Milwaukee, she become a member of St. Matthew CME Church where the pastor is Rev. Dr. Richard D. Shaw and First Lady is Dr. Toni Shaw.

Pictured at Ruth's birthday celebration are (back row, from left) Rev. Dr. Richard D. Shaw; granddaughter Ava Shaw, First Lady Dr. Toni Shaw; (bottom row, from left) Ruth's daughter missionary Tracey L. McNeely and the birthday girl herself, Ruth Bradley-McNeely-Wells.

More than 100 MPS students earn NAFTrack Certification

Milwaukee Public Schools

(MPS) is celebrating more than 100 students who have earned national NAFTrack Certification! Students were honored at an event on April 25, 2023, at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) to recognize their hard work and commitment.

Through the NAF (National Academy Foundation) program, students select an academy offered at their school and take part in a pathway that allows students to gain hands-on, in-depth experience. Career areas vary by school and include audio/ video technology, education, engineering, finance, health sciences, hospitality and tourism, or information technology.

To earn certification, students must complete four courses in a specified career track and take part in 80 hours or more of work-based learning, such as an internship or apprenticeship.

NAF is currently available at only eight schools across Wisconsin, all of which are Milwaukee Public Schools — Audubon, Bay View, James Madison, Milwaukee Marshall, North Division, South Division, Ronald Reagan, and Washington high schools.

The NAF program has expanded in recent years, with 2023 showing the largest group of students to earn certification to date. Students generally begin taking NAF courses in their sophomore year. Interested students should talk to their school counselor for more information or ask for the NAF director at one of the eight schools offering the program.

Many thanks to MATC and staff for sponsoring this event for our students and to the M-Cubed partnership for support with work-based learning.

Five questions you should be asking if you have prostate cancer

The healthcare system has failed the black community. It doesn’t give African Americans the right tools or advice to deal with chronic diseases. When it comes to fatal illnesses, like prostate cancer, black men are more than likely to die from it due to a lack of resources from the healthcare system.

According to research, “One in six black men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime.” Even worse, African American men are forced to wait too long to get tested.

Unfortunately, these racial disparities exist because of a lack of access to specialists, poor doctor-patient relationships that can cause distrust, delays in their treatment plans, and living in a community that’s exposed to harmful environmental toxins.

Fortunately, there are several ways to change the end result.

The best way for male patients with prostate cancer to advocate for themselves is by asking questions. Getting clarity on your disease and the form of treatment can go a long way in saving someone’s life.

There are five important questions that black men who have prostate cancer should be asking at the doctor’s office. They include everything from early-screening options to whether or not you should consider laparoscopic radical prostatectomy surgery for your treatment plan.

1. Familiarize yourself with your family history

Studying your family tree can be one of the first steps in helping patients manage their prostate cancer better. In some cases, it can help them get rid of the disease altogether.

If the illness runs in your family, it’ll better prepare you to deal with the disease. Asking your family members questions about what medications helped them manage their prostate cancer could

mean the difference between being sick every day and improving your condition.

Even learning about their diet can be helpful as well. Research states that black men are at a higher risk of developing the disease if they’re obese.

It can be a difficult discussion to have with a family member but in the end, learning about your family history can help you better manage the disease.

2. Early-screening

Additionally, getting tested early yields more and better treatment options for patients with prostate cancer. If you’ve noticed common signs like painful urination or any type of pain in your belly and hip, get tested immediately.

According to Afro.com, “Prostate cancer has a higher chance of being diagnosed in stage 1 of the illness.” However, that percentage drops if the cancer is detected at a later stage. Even worse, treatment options become scarce as the condition worsens.

3. How far along is my prostate cancer?

Not only can early screening lead to better treatment options but it’ll also tell you what stage of cancer you’re in. Knowing how far along your prostate cancer has progressed can be scary. However, understanding what type of prostate cancer you have can help you and your doctor better treat the disease.

4. Consider your treatment options

After receiving early screening testing, patients should ask about what treatment options would best suit their needs. Typically, treatment options are determined based on what stage of cancer you have. A common treatment plan involves active surveillance, which is usually used in cases of slow-growing cancer.

Other options may include radiation therapy, where doctors make use of highdose X-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Research reports that “Radiation comes from a machine outside the body or from the placement of thin plastic tubes containing radiation into the area where the cancer cells are found.” In other words, these treatments are effective in stopping or eliminating the disease altogether before it can even progress.

5. Do I need surgery?

Your treatment plans may also lead to having surgery done in order to remove cancerous tissue. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a less invasive surgery that involves the removal of a patient’s cancerous prostate. Not only does this surgery lead to less abdominal trauma and blood loss but also a faster recovery process.

Dealing with any chronic illness can be a daunting experience. However, living with prostate cancer doesn’t mean we have to stop living our life. Asking questions and advocating for yourself can help you manage the disease. It can even stop the progression of prostate cancer as well, leading to remission. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask your doctor pressing questions about your condition. It could save your life in the end.

What is the best time of day to exercise with type 2 diabetes?

If you’re one of the millions of folks living with type 2 diabetes, you know that regular exercise can help you keep your blood sugar in check.

Now, new research suggests that working out in the afternoon may help maximize these benefits.

The new study wasn’t designed to say how, or even if, exercising in the afternoon is better for blood sugar control, but researchers have some theories.

“If we exercise after a meal, it may be more beneficial than after fasting, and if you exercise in the afternoon, it is likely after a meal,” said study author Jingyi Qian. She is an associate physiologist and associate director of the medical chronobiology program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

By contrast, folks who work out in the morning may not eat breakfast until after they are finished.

This doesn’t mean that you should skip your workout if you can’t find time in the afternoon, Qian cautioned. “The best time to exercise is whenever you can and wherever you can.”

For the study, more than 2,400 people with type 2 diabetes wore a device on their waist that tracked physical activity for a week when the study began and four years later. They were grouped based on the time of day that they exercised at one year and four years.

Afternoon exercisers, those who worked out between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., showed a greater improvement in blood sugar control at one year, which was maintained after four years. What’s more, the folks who exercised in the afternoon were more likely to no longer need glucose-low-

ering diabetes medications.

The study didn’t look at specific types of exercise. “This is an emerging area, and we will know more with more studies,” Qian shared.

It’s too early to make any sweeping recommendations about the best time of day to exercise for people with type 2 diabetes, said Tanya Halliday, an assistant professor in the department of health and kinesiology at the University of Utah Health.

“We don’t yet know if the timing of exercise itself influenced these outcomes or if

there are differences between people who self-select to exercise at different times of day,” according to Halliday, who wasn’t involved in the new study.

For example, timing of exercise may result in changes to diet or sleep patterns that drive the improvements in blood sugar and reduced use of glucose-lowering medications, she noted.

“It will be important to see if this observation is replicated in other analyses,” Halliday added.

Halliday’s advice? “I would encourage people to exercise when they are most likely to consistently do it, whether that is first thing in the morning or the afternoon,” she suggested.

“Personal preference, work schedule, and when workout buddies may be available all influence when anyone chooses to exercise, which is perfectly fine,” Halliday added.

Aim to meet the current physical activity guidelines from the American Diabetes Association, which call for 150 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous in-

tensity aerobic activity each week and two or three weekly sessions of resistance or strength training exercise.

“I would strongly encourage people with type 2 diabetes to discuss their exercise plans with their medical care team so that appropriate follow-up and changes to medications can be made as the exercise program progresses,” Halliday said.

Dr. Ruchi Mathur agrees. She is an endocrinologist at the Cedars-Sinai Diabetes Outpatient Treatment and Education Center in Los Angeles.

She points out that everyone who exercised saw a reduction in blood sugar, regardless of timing. “It was more pronounced in those with afternoon activity,” said Mathur, who has no ties to the new research.

“Movement is the key, as is consistency,” she noted. “Do something you enjoy, and do it with someone you enjoy, and perhaps, make some time in the afternoon to accomplish those goals.”
