Hope Community Church hosts mortgage burning service
On Sunday, April 16, 2023, Hope Community Church commemorated the milestone of paying off the church mortgage during their morning service at the church, 5040 Northwestern Ave., Racine, WI. This was the vision of founding Pastor Sam Jackson. Some of the founding members were in attendance to join in the festivities.
The congregation watched and clapped loudly in excitement as Elders Lonnie Tolson and Yuniwo Nfor put the fire to the mortgage document while current Pastor Donald Bennett looked on.
Food and fellowship followed the mortgage-burning service. It was a day that the church celebrated the goodness and provision of God as He blessed this congregation. Pictured are (from left) Elder Lonnie Tolson, Pastor Donald Bennett, and Elder Yuniwo Nfor.
and North Division High School
On Saturday, April 15, 2023, friends, family, community members and North Division High School alumni gathered at Buckatabon Tavern & Supper Club in downtown Wauwatosa for a memorial to pay tribute to the tireless efforts and contributions George Gerharz made to the community, charities, school and non-profit institutions.
Gerharz was instrumental in helping launch a newsletter called the “Blue Devil Times;” and many other programs at North Division High School. His financial contributions, along with other sponsors, formed an Advisory Committee and gathered additional sponsorship for producing a quality newsletter for the duration of the three years, which was run by the tireless help and dedication of founder and president Martinez Milton, Jr.; former head teacher of the English deptment and chief editor Marchelle Odom, and the original committee members.
The family of George Gerharz was presented with a memorial plaque and dedication plaque (which will be hung in the North Division Dental Lab) and a check for $500.00 (on behalf of the Blue Devil Times) which will be sent to the Innocence Project:
4th Episcopal District of the AME Church and AKAs host community outreach at Repairers of the Breach
On Saturday, April 8, 2023, the 4th Episcopal District of the AME Church, the Sons of Allen (SOA) of St. Mark AME Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), members of St. Mark AME Milwaukee's Evangelism Ministry, and the Honey Dos (husbands of the AKAs) joined together to serve a meal at the Repairers of the Breach (RotB), 1335 W. The coordinator of the 4th Episcopal District level SOA is Rev. Jerry Davis, III, who is also the Pastor at Crossroads AME Church in Indianapolis, and was appointed by Bishop John F. White, Sr., to be the coordinator.
Rev. Davis wanted to leverage his district position to do an event and paired it with the AKA regional meeting in Milwaukee April 7-9. As it happens, his wife is the Regional President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Remembering the life and legacy of local entrepreneur Robert Joseph Thomas
On Friday, April 21, 2023, family, friends, colleagues and community leaders gathered at Reid's Golden Gate Funeral Home and Cremation, 5665 N. Teutonia Ave. to honor the legacy of Robert Joseph Thomas, entrepreneur and Milwaukee Community Journal co-founder and associate publisher. Thomas passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, he was 86. Thomas was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee and came to Milwaukee as a pre-schooler as part of the ‘Great Migration.’ He was raised in Calvary Baptist Church, and attended Milwaukee Public Schools, graduating from North Division High School.
While at North, Thomas became a track star and would receive a track scholarship to Marquette University and had trained to be an Olympic hurdler.
Because funds weren’t available, Thomas set aside his dream of becoming a lawyer, leading to a varied business career of many firsts.
The businesses he created—some with his father, J.C. Thomas, one of the first black Milwaukee County bus drivers— were: 'Robby’s,’ the first franchised fast food hamburger establishment in Milwaukee’s central city. It was the prototype for the entry of McDonald’s, located on North Avenue; Rich Man Poor Man, Ebony Cue Billiards, ‘The Fox Trap,’ the first member-owned Black nightclub; the first video game center on Fond du Lac and Capitol Drive, a location that broke traditional black business norms; and the first black-owned bowling center located in a former A&P food store on Teutonia Avenue. In 1980 Thomas was named Milwaukee’s Black Businessman of the Year.
He was the father of two sons: Dr. Terence Nolan Thomas, who preceded him in death, and Todd ‘Speech’ Thomas, a Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist and creative griot of the African American experience.
Thomas leaves to treasure his life and legacy: son Todd and his devoted wife Yolanda; grandchildren Jahi Terence and Zoe Renee; treasured friend and caregiver Robin Davis; cousins, nieces and nephews; his MCJ family; Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brothers and many friends and associates. Pictured are State Senator Lena Taylor (left) who presented Robert's son, Todd ‘Speech’ Thomas (right), with a proclamation.
A new plaza honoring a Milwaukee trailblazer is coming to downtown
Vel R. Phillips Plaza will soon take over a parking lot along Wisconsin Avenue between 5th Street and Vel R. Phillips Avenue (formaly 4th Streer).
The mayor made it official by signing a resolution for the $15 million project Monday, April 24, 2023.
“I’m also excited to witness this project become a reality. It’s no secret that I’m a supporter of gathering spaces in the plaza,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said.
Renderings show the new space will include a building for food and drink vendors, open space for possible farmers markets and food trucks and kiosks honoring the life
and legacy of Phillips.
The late trailblazing activist broke countless barriers. She was Milwaukee's first black Common Council member and the city's first alderwoman.
"She'd be absolutely overjoyed about the whole thing," her son Mike Phillips said Monday. "People relaxing, people enjoying hopefully a nice sunny day, that'll be perfect."
The plaza will take over the parking lot located across the street from the Wisconsin Center, which will be host to the 2024 Republican National Convention.
The city said construction on the plaza will begin this summer and is expected to wrap up next summer.
"The idea is to have this done before the RNC," the mayor told WISN 12 News
The announcement comes as Milwaukee Tool is finalizing its new downtown head-
quarters. Fiserv is also moving its headquarters nearby to the same building that will house a new Kohl's store.
"It's making it clear that our downtown is not just what happens east of the river and that there is so much that's happening right here throughout all of downtown and connected to other parts of the city, as well," said Lafayette Crump, Milwaukee's City Development Commissioner.

Harry Belafonte, activist and entertainer with a ‘rebel heart,’ dies at 96
Harry Belafonte, the dashing singer, actor and activist who became an indispensable supporter of the civil rights movement, has died, his publicist Ken Sunshine told CNN He was 96.
Belafonte died Tuesday, April 25, 2023, of congestive heart failure, Sunshine said.
Belafonte was dubbed the “King of Calypso” after the groundbreaking success of his 1956 hit, “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O).” He also became a movie star after acting in the film adaption of the Broadway musical, “Carmen Jones.”
But Belafonte’s biggest contributions took place offstage. He was a key strategist, fundraiser and mediator for the civil rights movement. He continually risked his entertainment career – and at least once his life – for his activism. He became a close friend of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who often retired to Belafonte’s palatial New York apartment to talk strategy or escape the pressures of leading the civil rights movement.
A voracious reader with a burning disdain for injustice, Belafonte’s political consciousness was shaped by the experience of growing up as the impoverished son of a
poor Jamaican mother who worked as a domestic servant.
“I’ve often responded to queries that ask, ‘When as an artist did you decide to become an activist?’ ” he once said. “My response to the question is that I was an activist long before I became an artist. They both service each other, but the activism is first.”
The scope of Belafonte’s activism was astonishing. He saw the civil rights movement as a global struggle. He led a campaign against apartheid in South Africa, and befriended Nelson Mandela. He mobilized support for the fight against HIV/AIDS and
Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®
became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He also came up with the idea for recording the 1985 hit song, “We Are the World,” which assembled a constellation of pop and rock stars, including Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen, to raise money for famine relief in Africa.
Belafonte didn’t mellow as his wealth and fame grew. He drew criticism after calling President George W. Bush “the greatest terrorist in the world” for leading an invasion of Iraq, and assailed black celebrities such as Jay Z and Beyonce for not taking bolder stands on social
justice. He criticized Barack Obama so much during the then-Senator’s first presidential run in 2008 that Obama asked him, “When are you going to cut me some slack?”
“What makes you think that’s not what I’ve been doing?” Belafonte responded.
Belafonte’s hero and mentor
Harold George Belafonte, Jr., was born March 1, 1927 in New York City to poor Caribbean immigrants. His father worked as a cook on merchant ships and abandoned the family when Belafonte was young. Belafonte also spent some of his boyhood in Jamaica, the former British colony and his mother’s native country, where he witnessed white English authorities mistreating black Jamaicans. He returned to New York City’s Harlem neighborhood by 1940 to live with his mother, Melvine, who struggled to hold her family together amid grinding poverty.
“She was the one who taught him that you shouldn’t let the sun go down without fighting against injustice,” Judith E. Smith, author of “Becoming Belafonte: Black Artist, Public Radical,” said about Belafonte’s mother.
Belafonte had a tumultuous childhood and often had to fend for himself.
“The most difficult time in my life was when I was a kid,” he told a magazine interviewer. “My mother gave me affection, but, because I was left on my own, also a lot of anguish.”
Belafonte dropped out of high school and enlisted in the US Navy in 1944. He was relegated to manual labor on the ship and didn’t see combat, but the experience proved to be profound. He met college-educated black men who gave him a wider exposure to the world, talking to him about big issues such as segregation and colonialism. The experience of fighting against facism abroad while coming back to segregation at home angered Belafonte, much like many black veterans from World War II.
He drifted into the enter-
tainment field almost by accident. Belafonte was working as a janitor in New York when he attended a play at the American Negro Theater. He was so swept up by the performance that he decided to become an actor.
He eventually studied acting at a workshop attended by classmates such as Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis and Bea Arthur. He also fell into singing in nightclubs – once in a band that included jazz greats Charlie Parker and Max Roach – and landed a recording contract in 1949.
Belafonte had natural charisma, on stage and behind the microphone. He won a Tony Award for his acting on Broadway and was the first African American to win an Emmy award for his 1959 variety show.
Belafonte also looked for a way to merge his activism with his career and found a mentor and friend in Paul Robeson. The black stage and film actor was a renaissance man, a star athlete and Ivy League-educated intellectual who became an outspoken civil rights activist and a critic of US foreign policy. Robeson was eventually blacklisted for his activism during the McCarthy era. Belafonte called Robeson part of his “moral compass.”
“For me, Mr. Robeson was the sparrow. He was an artist who made those of us in the arts understand the depth of that calling, when he said, “Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. We are civilization’s radical voice.”
His friendship with MLK Belafonte also built a friendship with King, another a powerful black leader. King often flew to New York City to raise money for the movement and to meet key advisors. During one trip, he called Belafonte, greeting him with, “We’ve never met, so you may not know who I am.”
The two men met at a New York church where King was speaking and retired after the event to a basement room to talk.
“It was just us at a card table with straight-back chairs,” Belafonte recalled. “What was supposed to be a few minutes led to almost four hours. I liked his courage, his thoughts, his ideas and his mission. I committed to him after that.”
Belafonte’s relationship with King would prove to be crucial. Belafonte had star power, connections, and more importantly, a willingness to risk all to help the civil rights movement. He raised money for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization that King co-founded and led. Belafonte also helped bail out activists who had

Spring training: Seven ways to get fit for summer
In case you haven’t noticed, summer will be here any minute and right about now, you’re probably panicking because those last pesky 10 or 20 pounds still haven’t melted off yet and are interfering with your summer body.
Not to worry, we’ve compiled a list of seven helpful tips to whip you into shape just in time for summer.
1. Switch it up.
So, you work out every day for at least a half-hour right before you go to bed.
That’s all fine and dandy, but if you really want to start seeing results, set your alarm so that it goes off 30 minutes earlier than usual and go for a quick run or power walk before you go about your day.
Working out early in the morning causes your body to burn more fat. If you can’t work out in the morning, afternoon workouts can still give you a performance boost since you are more likely to have eaten a meal or two.
2. Stop skipping breakfast. You may think you’re doing yourself a favor by dashing out the front door on an empty stomach, but that’s where you’re wrong.
When you skip out on meals, especially breakfast, your metabolism slows down, which makes the weight-loss process that much more difficult.
3. Cut back on alcohol. I really hate to break it to you, but alcohol is loaded with empty calories and to make things worse, it slows down the fat-burning process. Who wants that when you’re trying to drop the lbs?
4. Eat before you hit the gym
Eating a little something before you work out helps you retain and build muscle.
5. Do not ignore hunger. When you start to feel those midday hunger pangs, go ahead and reach for a snack! And it doesn’t have to be a full meal – fruit, yogurt or a handful of almonds should do it.
Actually, eating small meals throughout the day helps speed up your metabolism.
6. Go raw. You can’t go wrong if your diet consists of mainly fruits, vegetables and complex carbs (beans, legumes, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and quinoa).
These foods are lower in calories but still fill you up for hours.
7. Get some sleep. Eight hours is ideal, but at the very least, you should be getting six hours every night.
Anything less than that can sabotage your waistline because get this: Lack of sleep causes you to eat more and when you eat more, you tend to gain weight, right? The last time I checked, that would totally be defeating the purpose.

Summer Playgrounds Program
Milwaukee Recreation will provide enrichment activities, play opportunities, and free meals at playground sites across the city beginning June 12, 2023 (for kids ages 6-17). Due to federal regulations, all provided meals are served seated and must be consumed by youth at the playground.
All playgrounds are oper-
ated as a “free drop-in” program. Though locations are staffed and provide many enriching games and activities for youth, general supervision is only provided for youth who choose to stay on site. The playgrounds program is not a substitute for child care or similar attendance/registration-driven programs.
Please click here for playground locations and hours, as well as additional program opportunities that will be available at each site. We look forward to seeing you
this summer!
Inclusion Services Policy
Milwaukee Recreation is committed to creating and promoting inclusion within all facilities and programs that the department manages. Through the Inclusion Services Policy and supporting practices, we aim to ensure that everyone has access to the benefits of quality parks and recreation.
If a reasonable accommodation is needed for a participant to fully enjoy a recreation class, submit an ADA
Accommodation Request by clicking this link: ADA Accommodation Request / Inclusion Complaint Form. If registering in person, please indicate that an accommodation is needed to the Milwaukee Recreation team member processing your registration.
Once your request is received, you will be contacted by a member of the Recreation team to discuss the specific accommodation needs prior to the start of the class.
Milwaukee Recreation needs two weeks to process accommodation requests.
MPS congratulates 2023 Spelling Bee winners in grades 3–5
Milwaukee Public Schools students in grades 3–5 faced off on Saturday, April 15, 2023, to find the best spellers in the district. Winners were crowned for each grade level.
Each of 28 participating schools held preliminary spelling bees to determine winners at the school level, and those winners advanced to the district finals. Students studied a word bank of more than 400 words to prepare for this exciting event.
Spelling bees offer academic competition that requires focused studying, poise, listening, public speaking ability, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Each year, students look forward to the spelling bee to demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of the English language. The skills gained through participation last a lifetime.
Congratulations to our top spellers!

Keith P. Posley, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
He risked more than his career at times. In 1964, Belafonte and his friend and fellow actor Sidney Poitier traveled to Mississippi to deliver a doctor’s bag filled with $70,000 to support voter registration efforts. Belafonte said the pair were chased and shot at by the Ku Klux Klan but eventually succeeded in hand-delivering their money. Belafonte delivered crucial help to King’s family as well. He paid for housekeepers and babysitters while King traveled the country. And he took out a life insurance policy for the civil rights leader that became one of the family’s primary sources of financial support after King’s assassination.
“Whenever we got into trouble or when tragedy struck, Harry has always come to our aid, his generous heart wide open,” Coretta Scott King later said in her memoir.
Belafonte also became one of King’s most trusted
him for advice and strategy, said Smith, author of “Becoming Belafonte.”
“He (Belafonte) was already a radical and already thinking about how Black liberation should unfold,” Smith said. “He had already been in these groups where everybody was talking about, what should you to do to organize? How do you make change?”
Belafonte in his later years
Being a radical was essential to how Belafonte defined himself. As he got older, his silky singing voice lowered to a gravely whisper and he walked with a cane. But he never lost his movie-star looks or his hunger for radical change. In 2013, he was awarded the NAACP’s highest honor, the Spingarn Medal. He said during his acceptance speech that what was missing from the contemporary struggle for freedom is “radical thought.”
“America has never been moved to perfect our desire for greater democracy without radical thinking and radical voices being at the helm of any such quest,” he said.
Belafonte also was a recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor in 1989, the National Medal of Arts in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. He also became a mentor to other artists, just as Robeson had inspired him years before.
A group of black students approached Belafonte in Harlem in 2016 and asked if there was anything he was still looking for, despite his advanced age.
friends. King often stayed in Belafonte’s Upper West Side apartment, and he wrote the outline to one of his most famous speeches – his 1967 address denouncing the Vietnam War – in Belafonte’s home.
King was a self-contained man in public who rarely let his guard down. But in rare photos that capture King breaking into a huge, uninhibited grin, Belafonte is often at his side, hugging him and sharing some private joke. There is a marvelous YouTube clip showing King telling a joke to Belafonte when the entertainer filled in as a host on “The Tonight Show.”
Belafonte provided more than emotional support to King, though. King relied on
“What I’ve always been looking for: Where resides the rebel heart?” Belafonte replied. “Without the rebellious heart, without people who understand that there’s no sacrifice we can make that is too great to retrieve that which we’ve lost, we will forever be distracted with possessions and trinkets and title.”
Belafonte never lost his rebellious heart. Blessed with looks, wealth and fame, he could have been content with being the King of Calypso. But he made another choice. He made his biggest contributions offstage.
He is survived by his wife Pamela, his children Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer, Shari Belafonte, Gina Belafonte, David Belafonte, two stepchildren Sarah Frank and Lindsey Frank and eight grandchildren.
