Obituary

Order of Service

GREGORIE “GP” MCKAY was born on June 10, 1957, the seventh of ten children born to Lewis Sr. (Bubba) and Pauline McKay in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from North Division High School in 1975, where he also served as class president. Always a civic-minded family, the McKays were one of the first to join the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee on 15th and Center Street in the 1960s.

Musical Prelude..............................Gregorie’s Favorite Songs

Gregorie was united in holy matrimony with Debbie Lewis on June 30, 1979. Their union was blessed with five children. GP (nickname given to him by his family) was a devoted husband to Debbie. Together, they raised five remarkable and principled sons that carry on the commitment their parents exemplified to them in their own families today. His happiest days were spent with his grandchildren. Whether it was going to a movie, kissing them endlessly or calling them when they were away—his grandkids were the light of his life. In the 1980s, Gregorie worked second shift at Briggs and Stratton for seventeen years and never missed a day of work. He had the foresight to recognize that his job would not exist for long due to the decline in America’s manufacturing sector and he decided to join the Milwaukee Police Department. As an officer, he thrived in all roles he held. In 2015, the State of Wisconsin recognized Gregorie for developing a physical fitness regimen for officers that is now modeled throughout the entire State. In addition, he received several awards and recognitions. In 1999, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for exhibiting extraordinary courage without regard to his own personal safety. At the time, U.S. Senator and now the United States Vice President, Joe Biden, recognized him as a 1999 Top Cop Honorable Mention. A lifelong goal was to complete college; in 2011, he returned to Springfield College and graduated Summa Cum Laude as the Valedictorian of his class in 2013. After raising their five sons, Debbie and Greg spent their later years going on their weekly date to the latest movies, traveling to see their children, and entertaining his brothers for poker games and Packer parties. Gregorie and Debbie were the perfect match for each other. He provided the perfectly manicured lawn, structure and discipline, and Debbie provided the love and support. Action movies with his favorite actors, Steven Segal and Chuck Norris, will somehow never be the same without Gregorie’s jokes and comments. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline McKay and siblings, Ronald and Naomi McKay. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of thirty-seven years, Debbie McKay; five sons, Jerrod (Tiffany), Marvin (Jazzmin), Montrel (Jessica), Mychael (Rada) and Myles (Ashley); and twelve grandchildren that he loved dearly; his father, Lewis McKay, Sr. (Bubba); Mother and Fatherin-law, Herman Sr. and Idell Lewis; five brothers, Lewis Jr. (Virginia), Bobbie (Ouida), Kevin (Gwen), Marvin (Stacey) and Dwayne (Lisa); sisters, Betty Mattox McKay and Susan McKay; three brothers-in-law, Herman Jr. (Tanya) Lewis, Jeffrey (Yvette) Lewis and Frederick (Kelly) Lewis; two sisters-in-law, Kathie (Carlton) Richardson and Keisha (Clifton) Johnson; many nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved dearly, as well as many special and dearly appreciated friends.
