Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity launches Harambee Neighborhood Revitalization Project with $1 million grant from Bader Philanthropies Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity (Milwaukee Habitat); a nonprofit helping families in need of safe, affordable housing; announced on December 19, 2019, it is launching a neighborhood revitalization project in Harambee. With an initial grant of $1 million from Bader Philanthropies, Inc., Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity will be establishing 40 new homes and ensuring current homeowners can avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes by completing 20 critical repair projects in Harambee over the next four years, which

is anticipated to serve more than 200 of the community’s residents. Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity hopes to break ground on the project in Harambee during the spring of 2020. The $1 million grant kicks off a larger neighborhood revitalization project to serve

250 families in need of safe, affordable homes between 2020 and 2023. Together with Bader Philanthropies and all of its crucial supporters, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity will invest more than $18 million to build 100 new affordable homes in Harambee and Midtown and

repair 150 homes throughout Milwaukee’s Harambee and northwest neighborhoods. Milwaukee Habitat will be working on the Harambee project as it continues to build, rehab and repair 100 homes in the Midtown neighborhood, which it started in 2018, as well as

One big time resolution can be the act of using your mind by thinking outside the box. Most people already claim they do this all the time. Really? I’m saying make the resolution to look at your mind and analyze your thoughts. It is hard to think out of the box when you don’t understand what or who is creating the box. Try to analyze your mind and thoughts while asking the question, “ Am I the thought or the persona listening to the thoughts?” You may discover more about yourself and the reality you reside in. Take time to create periods of quiet during the day so you can listen to your thoughts unhindered. Silence is golden, especially when you want to understand thought and the box you may be in. Another resolution can be to only focus on what information is pertinent to your existence. This prob-

2020 power resolutions

The year 2020 is upon us. 2019 has exited stage left, or will soon be. Of course many people will be taking up resolutions that they want to enact in the New Year. 2020 also marks the start of a new decade. With this in mind resolutions should be a bit more intense or serious. What should a modern day US citizen's resolution possibly be? What is something a US citizen's would like to change in their behavior? Let’s throw out of the old resolutions. For the next few paragraphs let's put away the old stand-by resolutions. This should be easy because most of these old stand-bys never flourish. I’m talking about the simple ones, like giving up chocolate. Another old resolution is not using profanity. Come now people, these traits are easy to break and no one cares. How will the world benefit by you not eating a Snicker bar or using the profane word for feces? Exactly. For the next few hundred words let's play big, as they say in sports.

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors unanimously passed a resolution to seek a referendum that will increase revenue limits for Milwaukee Public Schools. Voting took place at the regular board meeting on December 19, 2019. The referendum question will appear on the spring ballot scheduled for April 7, 2020. Board members passed a resolution to ask voters for a four-year phase-in revenue limit increase for a total of $87 million. A recent poll showed 60 percent of the respondents supported a referendum request for $107 million; however, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors

If passed, the additional funding will help MPS attract and retain high-quality, certified teachers; offer more career and technical education programs; and expand art, music, physical education, and language programs. Health & Fitness

Keeping New Year's Resolution: Here’s how to get more done in the gym in less time Getting into a fitness routine is hard enough on its own. Your hectic schedule with work, kids, and maybe even a social life can tempt you to put your fitness on a back burner for good. It’s no wonder why skipping your gym session is so tempting, when making it to the gym can take up so much time out of your day. You have to get dressed, hop in the car, sit in traffic, lock your stuff up, and then find the machines and equipment you need to complete your workout. When all is said and done, the whole thing can take several hours of your very valuable time. Fortunately, we’re sharing tips to shorten your next gym session to make it easi-er to stick to a regular work-out routine. Keep reading to find out how you can get in a great workout, and save some time in the process. Don’t come without a plan: When you make a plan to hit the gym, you probably don’t have a detailed plan for your workout. You might decide that you want to get in some cardio, and then maybe do a little strength on a couple of weight machines or with free weights. While there’s nothing wrong with free-styling your workout, you can be in and out of the gym much faster if you come

up with a plan before you head out. Think about these things when planning your workout: What do I want to focus on at the gym? Strength? Cardio? A mix of both? If you plan to focus on cardio, jot down in your phone how much time you want to spend on your favorite cardio machine. You can take it a step further by giving yourself cardio intervals. For example, walk or jog for 3 minutes then sprint for 1 minute. The more detailed your plan, the less time you’ll spend thinking when you get to the gym. Next, figure out what equipment you need to finish your workout: Barbells, treadmill, leg press machine, steps, etc.? Pick a few pieces of equipment that you need and use that to map out your workout and cut out the time you would normally spend

wandering around. Put your phone on airplane mode: You can cut out a lot of wasted time at the gym by eliminating distractions from your workout. Your workout might be impossible without your phone and your music, but your phone can also be a huge distraction and time-waster at the gym. Don’t be that guy who takes up the leg press machine scrolling through Instagram and taking selfies without actually breaking a sweat. Instead, download your favorite playlist and turn your phone on airplane mode. This will keep you from falling into the cellphone trap and make sure that you can get in and out of the gym in less time. Limit breaks between exercises: Regardless of whether you circulate between machines

or spend all your time in the weight room, you can get the most out of our your gym session and save time by moving quickly from exercise to exercise. For one, you can keep your heart rate high, which ultimately leads to more calorie burn and some cardiovascular benefits. What’s more, rather than pausing to chat with a friend or check your email, you can get your complete workout done and get back to your life outside the gym faster. The best way to stick to a fast-paced workout is to set a timer on your phone and allow yourself 1-2 minutes between exercises. That’s enough time to towel off, sip your water and set up for your next move. Arrive dressed and ready: One of the common time wasters at the gym is getting in and out of the locker room. However, if you can minimize the time you need to find a locker, change clothes, fix your hair, you can knock off precious minutes in the gym. Before you leave for the gym, get dressed and pack everything you need in a small bag you can carry around the gym so that you might skip the locker room altogether before you jump

into your workout. Simplify your workout: Big box gyms make it ohso-tempting to try out every piece of equipment and shiny new machine in the building. But when you’re pressed for time, it’s best to keep your gym session as simple as possible. If your focus is strength training, then head to the free weights, grab a bench and few sets of weights, and get your workout done. You can get all the same work in less time if you stick to just a few pieces of equipment. An example of a simple leg strength workout can be done in just 5 moves with a heavy set of dumbbells: (1) Du Goblet Squats; (2) Deadlifts; (3) Lateral Right Lunge; (4) Lateral Left Lunge (5) Hip Thrusters. Repeat each move in a pyramid set, starting with 20 repetitions each, then 15, then, 10, then 5, then back up incrementally to 20 repetitions. By working on making all of these changes to your gym routine, you’ll have fewer reasons to skip your next workout and more time to spend living your life.

You got a new phone for Christmas: What to do with your old phone? If Santa left a new iPhone or Android smartphone under the tree, what do you do with your old smartphone? It’s a perennial question each holiday season, but the answer doesn’t have to be “sell it” or “dump it in a drawer”. Instead, there are plenty of useful things a smartphone can be turned into, even if it doesn’t have an active phone line connected. Read on for some of our favorites. 1. Turn a phone into a universal remote Rather than a stack of individual remote controls on the coffee table in the living room, how about a single, touchscreen interface for all your AV kit? You could pick up a fancy off-the-shelf one, such as Logitech’s Harmony, but an old smartphone can be reborn as a universal remote fairly easily. Up until recently, many Android phones had a built-in IR blaster: the HTC One M9, for instance, was a popular choice for this, and HTC even preloaded it with a remote app, while the Samsung Galaxy S6 had an IR blaster, too. AnyMote Universal Remote will work with those phones and control various TVs, stereo systems, and more from one interface. The downside to free apps is that usually they’re ad-supported, and you might not want that cluttering up your display (or confusing other family members) when you just want to start a movie. On Android, Smart IR Remote is paid but ad-free, and very well reviewed. We’ve got a full guide of which phones have IR blasters natively here. If your phone doesn’t have an IR blaster – if you’re an iPhone user, for example – then you’ll need to add some hardware. Yes, that’ll cost you, but it’s usually cheaper than buying a whole new dedicated universal remote. Logitech’s Harmony Hub is a well-reviewed $99.99 example, compatible with iOS and Android phones and tablets, while the Pronto Smart is

even cheaper at under forty dollars and works with the Peel remote app. 2. Turn a phone into a security camera Connected video cameras are one of the first upgrades many turn to when getting started with their smart home, but you don’t need to cough up for a Nest Cam if you have a spare smartphone lying around. An Android device can be turned into a surprisingly capable security camera with popular app Perch. It’s still in beta but offers a variety of features like motion alerts, the ability to switch between front and rear cameras, custom trigger zones, and IoT integration so a motion alert could automatically turn on your connected lights. On iOS, Manythings offers a similar feature-set, with IFTTT integration and optional cloud recording. You can also use Facebook Live to broadcast video automatically. It’s free for live video and motion alerts from a single camera, with paid plans for cloud recording and multiple camera support. 3. Turn a phone into a baby monitor If you’ve ever been responsible for looking after a child, then you’ll probably know the stomach-knotting fear involved in walking out of the room and hoping that they sleep. Baby monitors tap into that parental paranoia, but you don’t need to cough up for dedicated hardware. An old smartphone can eas-

ily be repurposed as a baby monitor. While you could just call it and keep the line open, it’s much easier to use one of the various apps out there which offer a much more streamlined job. There are free and paid options, but all offer the same core functionality. The paid apps merely throw some nice-to-have but hardly essential glitter on top. At the very least, you can expect noise-triggered notifications, pinging you remotely if the baby cries, and the ability to listen live to what’s going on in the room. Video calls, using the phone’s camera, are also popular features.

but $3.99 Cloud Baby Monitor gets strong reviews and works across iPhone, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. 4. The obvious ones: sell it, trade it, give it away… If the DIY life isn’t for you, then there’s always the option to make some cash – or make somebody’s day. Selling an old phone on eBay or Craigslist is, if you can avoid the scam buyers, the typical way to do it, but there are a variety of other services that promise convenience Most – though not all – apps even if they don’t offer the will allow you to do it all over very best price.
