Three officers granted immunity in new investigation into Joseph Mensah The Milwaukee County judge who ruled last summer there was probable cause to charge former Wauwatosa police officer Joseph Mensah with a crime in a deadly 2016 shooting, granted immunity Monday, January 3, 2022, to three Wauwatosa officers in the new investigation into the shooting days before the officers were scheduled to meet with the special prosecutor leading the probe. On Monday, Circuit Court Judge Glenn Yamahiro signed the initial order granting immunity to officers Ralph Sayers and Stephen Mills, court records show. The orders indicated the three officers were scheduled to meet with special prosecutors Tim Gruenke and Scott Hansen on January 5, 2022, to discuss the shooting death of Jay Anderson, Jr. In a letter to Yamahiro requesting immunity for the officers, Gruenke, who is also the La Crosse County District Attorney, said the lawyer for the officers asked for a promise of immunity from a judge "out of an abundance of caution." "Although it may be unorthodox because neither of

"Whatever Officers Ralph Salyers, Stephen Mills, and Gary Gabrish are willing to say now should have been said in 2016 after our son was killed," Anderson's family said in a statement through their attorney, Kim Motley.

"If they were covering up evidence they should also be held accountable." Last year, Motley pursued criminal charges against Mensah through an obscure state law that allows judges to directly question witnesses and decide whether probable cause exists to bring a criminal charge. The process is known as a John Doe proceeding. According to the Associated Press, at least six other states have similar statutory provisions, but attorneys say the process is rarely used in

Our Community Voices An open letter to all educators and administrators: A Personal Appeal for Your Support, Williams Works for Wisconsin! Not only is this our minute, it is our moment!

Greetings educators and administrators, my name is Dr. Darrell Williams and I am running for the United States Senate. For more than 25 years, I have served our children as an educator, principal interim superintendent of schools.….and I was humbled to be selected as National Principal of the Year in 2013. In addition to my civilian career, I served for 29 years in the United States Army, which included combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where I was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal. Most recently, I have served all Wisconsinites as the Governor-appointed Administrator of Wisconsin Emergency Management.

the President of the Middle School Principals Collaborative. Additionally, I briefly served as President of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Alliance of Black School Educators (MMABSE), of which I am also a life member.

My friends, as an educator myself, I know there is no greater profession in the world. Education is the only profession that gives birth to all others. But also, I understand the challenges you face everyday in our schools and in our classrooms.

In MPS, I started the Student Leadership Initiative to increase student achievement, decrease violence in schools and to help clog the "school-to-prison pipeline." In addition, I established the Twilight Program and other alternative programs to suspension to increase student achievement within our schools. I proudly served the children of MPS for 22 years, before ultimately becoming the Interim Superintendent of the School District of Beloit, .where I served for 4 years.

Educators, I need your help. You are looking at As Interim Superintensomeone who truly values dent, I helped implement education, ‘not only in words, the National High School but in deeds.’ of Business program to help students in their business As a teacher in Milwaukee and entrepreneurial endeavPublic Schools (MPS), I was ors. and have been in the struggle to promote teachers’ rights and give voice to their issues and concerns. Additionally, I established the Knight of Distinction Recognition Program which is one of the largest student and teacher honors events in the state.

Being Frank It’s 2022. It is a new year and new day. I often talk to people and listen to the subjects they discuss or complain about. In the last few weeks I have been hearing a similar spiel from some African American men. These individuals have traveled abroad and experienced how other countries operate. The resounding theme I have gathered from these African American males is one of exodus. These men are planning to exit the USA in the near future. Some would leave tomorrow if they could. These African American males are tired of the effects of racism in the US and are ready to burn rubber. Sadly, what these African American males do not understand is there is nowhere to run. “Man I am tired of the hate and disrespect I get from the whites and the African American female.” This statement is a summary of the main two factors the men www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

I have talked to expressed as their frustration. Everyone knows how the US is founded on the exploitation of minorities and myth building of white people. It has also been said that the US is run by white men through unconscious African American females. Can these African American men be correct in the concept of leaving the US for greener pastures in Canada or South America? More importantly, are there greener pastures for African American men anywhere? There is no way anyone can argue about the level of racism African American males face in the USA. There is no one on the planet more hated, despised and under deathwatch than an African American male. The constant pressure and burden that an African American male faces is unheard of in the annals of history. Yet, has the African American female somehow been manip-

As your United States Senator: 1. I will use my experience and knowledge to connect theory with practice to improve the quality of life for all Wisconsinites. I will work to provide equitable access to educational opportunities for our children, parents, and communities. 2. I will fight for better working conditions in our schools. Schools need air conditioning and appropriate heat so teachers and students are not baking in the summer and freezing in the winter. 3. I will work to expand broadband services throughout the state. 4. I will advocate for greater school funding, increased teacher pay and better healthcare benefits. 5. I will work with our high schools, colleges, and universities to develop and expand entrepreneurship opportunities for students. (Continued on pg. 4)

Nowhere to run ulated to be the ultimate tool of African American male destruction? This has to be asked. Outside of the racism factor, the interactions between African American males and females was the second issue for exodus. This is not a finger pointing dissertation. We want to look at what may drive a man to leave the only place he knows to go to either another white country or one where he can’t speak the language. In slavery the African American female was always the prize. If you conquer the females you will control the males. Have African American females been maneuvered by white society so that they subconsciously destroy African American males? Many African American men complain that African American females do not know how to treat a man. One complaint is that many African American females seem to cater to incompe-

tent men. An older African American female said, “Women who cater or get these subpar men want to control the man.” If this kind of thought has been planted in the African American female's mind, then there is an issue. No one should want to control their love interest. The white system of oppression has always wanted to control, dominate and demean the African American male. Is this acceptance of subpar men from many African American females a product of white racist programming? Will leaving the US solve this dilemma for the African American male? The African American male has some serious issues to face in 2022. Racism is everywhere in the world. Canada has a milder form of racism, but any place is milder than the US. Money has become the measuring stick for manhood. Most major economies in the world are based

on some form of white measurement. With that being said, there is no place for African American males to run. With this fact in mind, here is a quote by Morpheus from of The Matrix, “We’ve survived by hiding from them, by running from them. But they are the gatekeepers. They are guarding all the doors, they are holding all the keys. Which means that sooner or later, someone is going to have to fight them.” All fighting is not done via violence or physically. Think. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

A New Year – A New Perspective Happy New Year! While many make a list of resolutions to adopt in the New Year; often 2-3 weeks into the New Year, those resolutions fall by the wayside. Instead of making a list of resolutions that may be hard to keep, let’s focus on what God has planned for you. Jeremiah says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to get you an expected end.” – Jeremiah 29:11 You may be one of those who have this verse memorized. These words are words of hope and comfort. Jeremiah spoke these words of comfort to the Israelites who were experiencing suffering and hardship under the domination of the Babylonians. Jeremiah told them despite their current situation, believe that God has a plan for them. You can believe God has a plan for your life also!

God desires for us to know His will for our lives, so pray for God’s will to be done in our life. To know God’s will for your life, you must spend consistent time with God. This week, we will begin the New Year with a few spiritual disciplines to assist you to experience a deeper level of knowing God and discovering God’s will in your life. Quiet Time – Psalm 46:10 says: “Be still, and know that I am God…” There are some that enjoy the mornings to

have quiet time with the Lord; others may find that time of stillness before the Lord in the evenings. Build time in your daily schedule for regular and consistent time with God. Read God’s Word Regularly - Carve out time in your day regularly to read God’s Word. The reading can be from a particular book, chapter or verse of the Bible, or a daily devotional. When you place reading God’s Word a priority in your life, you will

grow in your walk with the Lord. Scriptural Meditation Scriptural meditation differs from Bible study in that you meditate on God’s Word by reading fewer verses. Thus, you can close your eyes and invite God to speak to you personally from those verses for a personal application. Remember Psalm 1:2 says blessed is the one: “whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law, day and night.” Prayer - Communicate with God in prayer. While driving, pray. At work, pray. During private devotions, pray. Paul says, “we ought to pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition.” (See Ephesians 6:18.) In other words, pray with perseverance and faithfulness in the heart as this keeps one’s heart connecting with God. Beloved, these are just a few spiritual disciplines. Others include fasting, giving, serving, worship, fellowship,

being obedient to God, etc. Incorporate spiritual disciplines in your daily life and allow God to show you His will, plan and purpose for your life! Happy New Year! An open letter to all educators (Continued from pg. 3) 6. I will work with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and our Historically Hispanic Serving Institutions to build bridges and recruit and hire more minority teachers that reflect the diversity of our state, the students we serve, and the communities we live in. 7. I will work with our local colleges and universities to develop teacher education pipelines from high school back to the classroom. This will allow us to GROW OUR OWN teachers and keep them here in Wisconsin. 8. I will work to creatively address violence in our schools and the community in order to improve school safety. 9. I will work with our stakeholders to address issues related to the schoolto-prison pipeline, by getting and keeping students in school, not prison. 10. I will work to collaboratively and consultatively ensure that the educational issues, concerns, and needs of our tribal nations are addressed. 11. If we truly believe diversity is our strength, we must be bold in our recruitment and retention of minorities, especially educators and administrators within our schools.

Healthy Eating Active Living Collaborative

Serving Older and Younger Adults By: Sandra Millon Underwood RN, PhD, FAAN, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Valeria Carter Salinas MD, Community Health Specialist Sophia Najwa Hamdan, Project Assistant Heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer are responsible for approximately two-thirds of all deaths in Wisconsin. Research reveals that these diseases are often associated with poor nutrition, physical inactivity, excess weight, and other high-risk lifestyle behaviors. Likewise, research suggests that most of these diseases could be avoided and managed if programs that emphasize health promotion, healthy eating, active living, and weight management were targeted to populations in the local community. There is little debate – there is a need for more carefully crafted healthy eating and active living programs for older adults in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Collaborative team is committed to doing just that!

The HEAL Collaborative was formalized in 2019 as a community-based initiative to promote healthy eating, active living, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The project is one of several initiatives supported by the American Cancer Society and the Kohl’s Healthy Family Program to improve nutrition and increase physical activity among residents of local communities in Southeastern Wisconsin.

The HEAL Collaborative is facilitated in keeping with Wisconsin’s COVID-19 EMERGENCY ORDER. The weekly presentations, food demonstrations, and active living support are provided virtually using Facebook, ZOOM and teleconference.

Cooking demonstrations and presentations offer suggestions on how to prepare nutritious meals using fresh produce, canned vegetables, fruit, dried beans, meats/fish, and shelf-stable food products provided in stock boxes distributed at the senior centers, local food banks and emergency food programs.
