Real talk about the REAL ID (Week 2) ______________

GET YOUR REAL ID DEADLINE: OCTOBER 1, 2020 On October 1, 2020, persons who plan to travel domestically as well as enter government buildings, will need a REAL ID. Several questions were asked and answered by the Department of Homeland Security regarding the new compliant ID. This week in continuation of our series on Real Talk About the REAL ID, a few of those questions posed to Homeland Security along with the answers will be presented here.

Question: Will the applicant who wears a head covering for religious reasons seeking to comply with the REAL ID Act be required to alter or remove the head covering so that the driver’s license or identification card show their hair or ears? Answer: No. The REAL ID regulatory standards for the digital photograph recognize that some individuals may wear head coverings for religious or other reasons. However, such coverings should not obscure an applicant’s facial features or generate a shadow. For purposes of the photograph, the face should be visible from the hairline to the chin and forward to the ears, and be free of shadows. The REAL ID regulation does not require the exposure of the hair line or the ears.

A new chapter in city hall It’s time for us to turn the page in Milwaukee’s City Hall. For too long, we’ve seen our communities struggle and the success that’s felt downtown isn’t seen in communities of color. I’m running for City Attorney because it’s time we have someone who, for the first time, will be a voice for our needs and push the city to make the changes we deserve. I’ve spent a career fighting for justice and making sure people are safe. I’ve overcome personal adversity, achieving through hard work what doctors said wouldn’t be possible. Now I’m ready to stand up and fight for us. I’m a Milwaukee native. I was born here, and I’ve built my career here. Before becoming the attorney I am today, I was an award-winning safety engineer, focusing on transportation infrastructure including dams, bridges, tunnels, airports, and rail systems, working all over the country. I ensured maintenance on refineries was done safely and oversaw safety professionals on the cleanup efforts of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. But nothing comes easy, and we all have to overcome adversity at some point in our lives. In the middle of my career, I was diagnosed

dealt with the status quo, being voiceless in a time when others are loud, and we’ve seen our leadership remain stale when we’ve needed them the most. I’m going to be a proactive City Attorney. I’m going to be a visible part of our communities. And I’m going  to 

fight for you the way I always have throughout my life and career. It’s time for a new chapter in City Hall. I look forward to earning your support and your vote on February 18 and April 7, 2020. This op-ed is by paid for by Spencer for Milwaukee.   

Tearmean Spencer for Milwaukee City Attorney with a degenerative condition that confined me to a wheelchair. But that didn’t stop me. While I was striving to recover, I earned a Masters in Business Administration from Golden Gate University. And through it all, I never stopped. I went on to earn my Juris Doctor (law degree) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I’ve had a successful law practice here in Milwaukee, handling real estate and business cases, and protecting individuals against big banks. More recently, I’ve focused on defending the rights of consumers, and winning millions of dollars in settlements and verdicts for my clients.

I’ve always been committed to community leadership, including serving on the board of Community Brainstorming Conference and as a member of the Felmers Chaney Advisory Board. And I completed the FBI Citizens Academy and am active in the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association. And guess what? I defied expectations and learned to walk again. With more than 30 years of leadership experience, I’m ready to run the City Attorney’s office, a broad operation that oversees civil, criminal, and municipal law on behalf of the people of Milwaukee. It’s time we have a real voice who speaks for us in City Hall. For too long we’ve 

Four ways to combat burnout at work

By: Maya Harris Burnout is something anyone can fall victim to. We all have bad days at work, but when it happens consistently it’s time to make a change. Hello, Loves! I’m not sure about you all, but I have experienced some serious burnout at work. What is burnout? The World Health

Organization now classifies burnout as a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” So, if you’re consistently feeling overwhelmed by work you may be experiencing burnout. It can cause you to dread going to work every day and feel as if you’re drowning in your to-do list.

M&S CLINICAL SERVICES, INC Northside Access Point 2821 N 4th Street, Suite 210 Milwaukee, WI 53212 414-263-6000 fax 414-263-2270 www.msclinicalservices.com

Other indicators of burnout include exhaustion, lack of interest in work and suffering work performance. If you’re experiencing burnout there are a few things you can do. 1. Recognize when there’s too much on your plate No one likes to be bogged down with work. If you can’t complete anything you’re working on, that’s a sign that you’re trying to do too much. You should be able to finish at least a few core tasks or projects a day. If you can’t, it’s time to ask for help. Let your manager or someone on your team know that you need support working on something so they can lean in. You’ll feel much better when you can focus on one thing and not have to worry that other work will suffer. 2. Keep strict business hours I can’t stress enough how important it is to unplug once the workday is done. Of course there will be times where you have to work on something at home, but don’t make it a habit. Try your best not to respond to emails or work requests when the day is over. If you continue to make yourself available at all hours of the day, work can start to bleed into your personal time. This can cause you to resent your job and experience burnout at work. You’ll feel as though you always have to be in work mode. Set boundaries and understand that just about any issue can wait until you’re back in the office to address. Only make exceptions for true work emergencies. 3. Take time away from work You deserve a break. Even if you don’t plan an extravagant vacation, getting out of

the office for a few days can help you recharge. I try to take a vacation once a quarter to give my mind and body a break. If you’re reading this and you’ve yet to take a vacation, please do. You owe it to yourself to take a break and chase away the looming feeling of burnout. Set that out-of-office message and let the office run without you for a few days. Use the time away to reassess your goals or simply relax your mind and not think about work at all for a while. 4. Prioritize your health and wellness Now, I’m no self-care or health guru but I do know how positive of an impact this can have on morale. When I was experiencing burnout at work I started taking fitness classes as a release. Working out and doing yoga helps me release some of the day’s frustration and relaxed me from head to toe. I also started drinking more water and eating a little better. Staying hydrated and eating to fuel my body helps give me the energy I need to get through my day. Picking up a hobby you enjoy will help restore some balance to your life. Try a short morning cardio routine to get your blood flowing or see if your job partners with a fitness center for a discount. Plenty of people work out during the day to break away from their desk and stay active. I hope you all found these tips helpful. Experiencing burnout at work is never fun, and often takes a while for us to recognize. Try to be hyper-aware of what you’re feeling regularly so that you’re able to combat burnout if it happens to you.

Gallery Night and Day to feature two local artists Gallery Night and Day at the King Drive Commons Gallery and Studio will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, January 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gallery is located at 2767 North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. This art exhibit is called, “Points of View," recognizing the visual artwork of Willie Lamar and Greg Cox. Artist Willie Lamar became interested in art and photography while in third grade when his teacher brought in pictures from the Grand Canyon. This inspired him to start taking pictures of his neighborhood, friends and adventures. While in college he took photography and film classes and worked in the dark room developing his photos. Willie became fascinated with panoramic landscape photography, combining several images to create

Willie Lamar one seamless picture. This inspired him to develop fine art photography and to find new ways to view an object or place. Artist Greg Cox recalls painting at the age of five. However, in tenth grade his commercial art teacher discouraged him from drawing. Many years later in 2010 while viewing artwork on

Greg Cox

the internet he decided to go back to sketching. Other than spending time with family and work, a great deal of his time was then spent in the art supply stores acquiring materials and going home to paint and sketch. Devoting many hours to his artwork he rediscovered and developed his gift in painting and in drawing with charcoal,

pencil and graphite. He acquired the skill that just by looking at a picture and using various kinds pencils and a paintbrush technique he can draw it the same but in his own version. Friday’s night entertainment will include live rhythm and blues musical selections by MAK’E and Soul Trio, performing cherished tunes

by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Al Green. Also featured will be an educational presentation recognizing the poetic lyrics of Curtis Mayfield. A panel discussion is also featured on lyrics heard in popular Rap to those of earlier music. This is one of a series of “Art of Health” programs developed by Marquita F. Edwards. This program is an innovative kaleidoscope of connecting forms of cultural arts and areas of health, to engage communities in promoting healthier lifestyles for the mind, body and spirit. With culinary delights by Pas Da Peas Catering, the event is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation and the Bader Philanthropies Inc.
