On Saturday, December 25, 2021, Christmas Day, the Salvation Army hosted its annual Christmas Family Feast at the Wisconsin Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. Normally the Salvation Army would be serving a sit-down meal, with singers, gifts and Santa. However, due to the pandemic, dinner was curbside pick-up only. Everyone that arrived received a to-go Styrofoam box filled with turkey, ham, yams, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, green beans and dessert. All volunteers and staff were wearing masks and all CDC guidelines were observed. “Christmas Family Feast is a Milwaukee tradition bringing together those in need and those of means for a day of food, fun and fellowship. While we can’t dine-in together this year, we still wanted to provide a meal for those who may need one,” said Major Steve Woodard, Coordinator for The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County. Christmas Family Feast is sponsored by Sysco, All Saints Cathedral, AT&T, Brewers Community Foundation, Cedar Crest Ice Cream, Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, Hunger Task Force, Jammin' 98.3, Milwaukee Courier, Milwaukee County Transit System, Molina Healthcare, Pick ‘n Save, Cream City (WI) Chapter: The Links Incorporated, The Milwaukee Times, WE Energies Foundation, Wisconsin Center District, and WNOV. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Sidney Poitier, first Black actor to win best actor Academy Award, dies at 94 Sidney Poitier, who broke through racial barriers as the first Black winner of the best actor Oscar for his role in "Lilies of the Field," and inspired a generation during the civil rights movement, has died at age 94, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis said on Friday, January 7, 2022. "It is with great sadness that I learned this morning of the passing of Sir Sidney Poitier," Davis said in a speech broadcast on Facebook. "But even as we mourn, we celebrate the life of a great Bahamian: a cultural icon, an actor and film director, an entrepreneur, civil and human rights activist and, latterly, a diplomat." Poitier created a distinguished film legacy in a single year with three 1967 films at a time when segregation prevailed in much of the United States. In "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" he played a Black man with a white fiancee and "In the Heat of the Night" he was Virgil Tibbs, a Black police officer confronting racism during a murder investigation. He also played a teacher in a tough London school that year in "To Sir, With Love." Poitier had won his history-making best actor Oscar for "Lilies of the Field" in 1963, playing a handyman who helps German nuns build a chapel in the desert.

Five years before that Poitier had been the first Black man nominated for a lead actor Oscar for his role in "The Defiant Ones." His Tibbs character from "In the Heat of the Night" was immortalized in two sequels "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!" in 1970 and "The Organization" in 1971 - and became the basis of the television series "In the Heat of the Night" starring Carroll O'Connor and Howard Rollins. His other classic films of that era included "A Patch of Blue" in 1965 in which his character was befriended by a blind white girl, "The Blackboard Jungle" and "A Raisin in the Sun," which Poitier also performed on Broadway. "If you wanted the sky i would write across the sky in letters that would soar a thousand feet high.. To Sir… with Love Sir Sidney Poitier R.I.P. He showed us how to reach for the stars," Whoopi Goldberg, Oscar winning actress and TV host, wrote on Twitter. "The dignity, normalcy, strength, excellence and sheer electricity you brought to your roles showed us that we, as Black folks, mattered!!!," Oscar winner Viola Davis tweeted. Poitier was born in Miami on Feb. 20, 1927, and raised on a tomato farm in the Bahamas, and had just one year of formal schooling. He struggled against poverty, il-

literacy and prejudice to become one of the first Black actors to be known and accepted in major roles by mainstream audiences. Poitier picked his roles with care, burying the old Hollywood idea that Black actors could appear only in demeaning contexts as shoeshine boys, train conductors and maids. "I love you, I respect you, I imitate you," Denzel Washington, another Oscar winner, once told Poitier at a public ceremony. As a director, Poitier worked with his friend Harry Belafonte and Bill Cosby in "Uptown Saturday Night" in 1974 and Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in 1980's "Stir Crazy." Poitier was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in 1974 and served as the Bahamian ambassador to Japan and to UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency. He also sat

on Walt Disney Co's board of directors from 1994 to 2003. Poitier grew up in the small Bahamian village of Cat Island and in Nassau before he moved to New York at 16, lying about his age to sign up for a short stint in the Army and then working at odd jobs, including dishwasher, while taking acting lessons. The young actor got his first break when he met the casting director of the American Negro Theater. He was an understudy in "Days of Our Youth" and took over when the star, Belafonte, who also would become a pioneering Black actor, fell ill. Poitier went on to success on Broadway in "Anna Lucasta" in 1948 and, two years later, got his first movie role in "No Way Out" with Richard Widmark. In all, he acted in more than 50 films and directed nine, starting in 1972 with "Buck and the Preacher" in which he co-starred with Belafonte. In 1992, Poitier was given the Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute, the most prestigious honor after the Oscar, joining recipients such as Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, Fred Astaire, James Cagney and Orson Welles. "I must also pay thanks to an elderly Jewish waiter who took time to help a young Black dishwasher learn to read," Poitier told the audi-

ence. "I cannot tell you his name. I never knew it. But I read pretty good now." In 2002, an honorary Oscar recognized "his remarkable accomplishments as an artist and as a human being." Poitier married actress Joanna Shimkus, his second wife, in the mid-1970s. He had six daughters with his two wives and wrote three books - "This Life" (1980), "The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography" (2000) and "Life Beyond Measure: Letters to My Great-Granddaughter" (2008). "If you apply reason and logic to this career of mine, you're not going to get very far," he told the Washington Post. "The journey has been incredible from its beginning. So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness." Poitier wrote three autobiographical books and in 2013 published "Montaro Caine," a novel that was described as part mystery, part science fiction. In 2009, Poitier was awarded the highest U.S. civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Barack Obama. The 2014 Academy Awards ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of Poitier's historic Oscar and he was there to present the award for best director.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

A New Year: Spiritual Journaling (part 2) Journaling is a spiritual discipline where one writes down their prayer requests, answered prayers, thankfulness, joy, thoughts, notes, insights, daily struggles, spiritual victories, encounters with God, etc., whether during or after Bible Study or during personal devotional time. Many also journal when they are listening to a sermon and they experience a powerful “Aha” moment. Journaling for some is a brief few sentences while others journal several pages as the thoughts flow. Some journal privately by writing down things in a notebook or shared privately with friends on one of their social media platforms. Journaling also preserves a written record of one’s spiritual journey.

Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them saying, take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.

may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come ‘what do these stones mean to you?’, then you shall tell them the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord…. So, these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever. (See Joshua 4:1-7.)

In the Book of Joshua, God told Joshua to record the spiritual journey of the Israelites after they crossed the Jordan River as a memorial to show God’s faithfulness:

Pass on before the Ark of the Lord into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that this

Likewise, in Joshua 8, after the battle at Ai, Joshua renewed the covenant by reading the words of the Law. Joshua was instructed to build an altar of uncut stone on which no iron tool

has been used. And on it they offered burnt offering to the Lord, and they sacrificed peace offerings. And there in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua inscribed on the stone a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written God instructed Joshua to write upon the stones a copy of the Law of Moses (not the whole law of Moses, but perhaps the 10 Commandments). As instructed, Joshua wrote on the stones in the presence of the Israelites. This activity and the inscription would serve as a memorial and also a reminder for the people of the constancy of God. Beloved, you are encouraged to implement this spiritual discipline in your life by writing your thoughts in a dedicated notebook, or if it is easier, in a document created on your computer. You will discover as you write down your thoughts and your special God-moments in your life; you will develop not only a life of worship but you will

experience a deeper relationship with God! Don’t forget to pray before and after you journal and then spend some time after journaling to sit quiet in God’s presence and allow God to speak to you. A new US quarter featuring the late Maya Angelou went into circulation Monday, January 10, 2022, the US Mint announced, making the legendary poet and activist the first Black woman ever to appear on the coin. The Maya Angelou quarter is the first in the American Women Quarters Program, which will include coins featuring prominent women in American history. Other quarters in the series will begin rolling out later this year and through 2025, the Mint said in a release on Monday. "Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country -- what we value, and how we've progressed as a society," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a separate statement. "I'm very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America's most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou." The new coin still features George Washington's visage on the "heads" side, while the "tails" side honors Angelou by evoking one of her most famous works, the autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Lawmakers cheered the release of the new coin on Monday and credited Rep. Barbara Lee, a California Democrat, with the achievement. Lee introduced the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which passed in January 2021 and ultimately paved the way for the creation of these new coins. "The phenomenal women who shaped American history have gone unrecognized for too long -- especially women of color," Lee said in a tweet. "Proud to have led this bill to honor their legacies." The US Mint invited the public to submit names of women they view as American icons. The bureau welcomed entries of women known for their work in civil rights, science and the arts, among other areas, with an emphasis on women from

"ethnically, racially and geographically diverse backgrounds." The only requirement was that the women who appear on the coins must be deceased. The agency will issue four other quarters this year, with the others honoring Sally Ride, an astronaut who was the first American woman in space; Asian American actress Anna May Wong; Cherokee Nation leader Wilma Mankiller and suffragette and politician Nina Otero-Warren.

A true advocate for education and the future of our children! *Darrell Williams, Ph.D.* Your choice for the U.S. Senate!

In MPS, I started the Student Leadership Initiative to increase student achievement, decrease violence in schools and to help clog the "school-to-prison pipeline." In addition, I established the Twilight Program and other alternative programs to suspension to increase student achievement within our schools. I will work with our stakeholders to address issues related to the schoolto-prison pipeline, by getting and keeping students in school, not prison. 10. I will work to collaboratively and consultatively ensure that the educational issues, concerns, and needs of our tribal nations are addressed. 11. If we truly believe diversity is our strength, we must be bold in our recruitment and retention of minorities, especially educators and administrators within our schools.

Greetings educators and administrators, my name is Dr. Darrell Williams and I am running for the United States Senate. For more than 25 years, I have served our children as an educator, principal interim superintendent of schools.….and I was humbled to be selected as National Principal of the Year in 2013.

I will work with our high schools, colleges, and universities to develop and expand entrepreneurship opportunities for students. 6. I will work with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and our Historically Hispanic Serving Institutions to build bridges and recruit and hire more minority teachers that reflect the diversity of our state, the students we serve, and the communities we live in. 7. But also, I understand the challenges you face everyday in our schools and in our classrooms. As your United States Senator: 1. I will use my experience and knowledge to connect theory with practice to improve the quality of life for all Wisconsinites. I will work to provide equitable access to educational opportunities for our children, parents, and communities. 2. I will fight for better working conditions in our schools. Schools need air conditioning and appropriate heat so teachers and students are not baking in the summer and freezing in the winter.

Educators, I once heard someone say that, “The growth of a nation starts in the homes of its people.” But for almost 8 hours a day, the most important and the most influential place in America is in our schools and most impactful, in our classrooms. Colleagues, for too long, politics has been chosen over the people. This is our time and this is our moment to choose the right candidate over politics. If you want someone with the knowledge, skills, and ability to work for our educators at the national level and get results at the state and local level, I am he. Let’s not play politics with our children. Vote for someone who understands you and will fight for you. The reason is simple: To lead me is to know me. Not only do I know you; I am one of you. Hence, I humbly ask for your support and ultimately, your vote.

ALL ABOUT SCIENCE & RESEARCH WITH ALL OF US

Sponsored by:

Lingering pandemic not stopping All of Us

Our lingering pandemic continues to bring into immediate focus our individual and collective health, tasking us to find answers to an essential question: how do we more effectively care for ourselves and each other in this rapidly changing public health landscape? And how do we positively transform medical care for the longterm? This is precisely why our friends and the All of Us Research Program are continuing their quest to enroll at least one million people into the nation’s largest and most diverse health database. Bashir Easter, Ph.D., assistant director of UW All of Us Milwaukee joins us with an update.

Dr. Bashir Easter, Ph.D. to study health and illness so that ways of diagnosing, preventing, and treating health conditions can lead to improved health for generations to come. At the local level, this national program is community-informed, relying on guidance from and collaborations with local leaders, organizations, and community members. These relationships ensure that the program is responsive, builds trust, and treats all involved as partners.
